Don’t Miss Evening of Unpredictable Music For those who do not know Saskia and Darrel yet, come on down to meet them, they are very friendly. They are certainly no strangers to Chase and are happy to be coming back this fall. Enjoy a heart-warming show filled with music, merriment, and mayhem as Saskia and Darrel deliver a fun blend of music, an unpredictable series of songs that change every time you see them. They delight their audience with tales about Grain Elevator, War brides, Patchwork quilts, and history makers such as Louis Riel and David Thompson. They will share tender songs about their spiritual journey or break into Swiss yodeling, sing in Gaelic, Dutch, German or French.
Great Plains are a veteran touring act; with an easy, crowd-friendly style that instantly endears them to any audience. This is true Canadiana; real songs, drenched in our culture and heritage delivered in comfortable h i g h l y skilled sets with oodles of self-poking humor. A taste of Celtic, a dab of bluegrass, a touch of Old Tyme Country all wrapped around extremely beautiful melodies.

RECOGNIZING THE submitted FALLEN
The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) commends the Minister of Public Safety and the Federal Government for the official proclamation of National Firefighters Memorial Day to be observed nationally the second Sunday of each September. While the sector holds recognition ceremonies, the Federal Government’s official proclamation is more than a symbolic gesture. “Recognizing the fallen is both for those who have lost their lives and left families bereft in service of community and a statement of the Government’s recognition and support for those firefighters and their families who provide essential services to our communities despite the risks of death and occupational illnesses resulting either from injury or repeated exposure”. Says Chief Ken Block, President of the CAFC and Fire Chief for the Edmonton Fire Service. “Seeing flags at half-mast on federal buildings this year and in the future, will remind all Canadian policy makers and the public of the steps we all have to take to keep our communities, and those who serve them, safe”, he adds. This program was planned to coincide with the major Spring Food Drive held by the 5 Kamloops Rotary Clubs and the Kamloops Food Bank. Our goal is to raise 2,500 pounds of food in Chase, or one pounds for every Chase resident. The Chase Hamper Society has provided food hampers at Christmas, as well as support during the year for families in need, as well as support to breakfast and lunch programs at Haldane Elementary and Chase Secondary schools. In 2016, there were over 150 hampers given out at Christmas. The need for more support for the Chase Hamper Society is very evident, and that is why the Chase Rotary Club became involved. The Fall Food Drive is planned to coincide with the Kamloops Food Drive on September 9, and all food donated in Chase will stay in Chase! We will be distributing yellow Rotary Food bags with the September 1 edition of the Shuswap
Market News, and will conduct a door to door pick up on the main residential area of Chase from 9 AM to 12 Noon on September 9. Just place your bag of food on your front steps, and a Rotarian will pick it up! For those living out of the downtown area, you can drop your donation off at the Community Hall office of the Chase Hamper Society between 9 AM and Noon, and a Rotarian will be there to accept your donation, or in the drop boxes provided at Safety Mart Foods, or PharmaChoice Food and Drugs. All donations will then be turned over to the Chase Hamper Society, to be used for the benefit of needy families in Chase. Chase Rotary would like to thank the Chase Hamper Society, the Chase Chamber of Commerce, Shuswap Market News, the Kamloops Rotary Clubs, the Kamloops Food Bank, NL Radio, Village of Chase, Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, Little Shuswap Indian Band, Safety Mart Foods, PharmaChoice Food and Drugs, and the citizens of Chase, for all the support shown in helping to organize this event.

Yoga with the Donkeys submitted
Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge and Sweet Freedom Yoga in partnership with Kristal Burgess Photography present a unique event to feel good and do good: yoga with the donkeys. On September 17 at 9:30 am the Refuge invites you to support your health and well-being while supporting animal welfare by joining us for our very first yoga with the donkeys. Enjoy the quiet country atmosphere of the Turtle Valley while you practice gentle stretches that are appropriate for any age and skill level. Commemorate this special occasion with a short photo session with photographer Kristal Burgess, who will capture you with the donkeys in any pose you are comfortable with. The yoga session is $20 with an additional $15 for the photo session. Both yoga instructor and photographer are donating their time for this special event, so all proceeds will go directly to the Donkeys and their care. Refuge
founder Shirley Mainprize is excited to offer this special event: “Yoga offers so many people the opportunity to relax and we couldn’t be more excited to offer it here at the Refuge so all participants can take in the relaxing atmosphere of the Turtle Valley and peaceful energy of the Donkeys. Many thanks to Sweet Freedom Yoga, Kristal Burgess, and event organizer Shannon Garrison for putting together this unique experience.” Animal welfare and human welfare are inextricably connected and the Donkey Refuge hopes that anyone who participates in this program will come out with a renewed sense connection with the earth, animals, and themselves. Sign up is available in the Donkey Refuge’s Online Store – www. turtlevalleydonkeyrefuge.com (class size is limited). FMI Please Contact: Shirley Mainprize 250.679.2778 / donkeyrefuge@gmail.com

An older woman looked over her fence and saw the little girl next door digging in her back yard. “What are you doing sweetheart?” the woman asked. “I’m burying my canary,” sobbed the little girl. “That’s an awfully big hole to be burying a little canary,” said the woman. “That’s because it’s inside your beeping cat,” sobbed the little girl.

COYOTES MIGRATING NORTH
SEPTEMBER 20TH
submitted by Scott Koch
Opening Night in KIJHL Regular Season action sees the talented Osoyoos COYOTES travelling to Art Holding Memorial Arena to face the host Chase HEAT. The date is Friday, September 8th,and curtain call is 7:00 pm. The last time the desert dogs appeared in Chase found the HEAT tieing the game with 3/10’s of a second left and then winning in over time. The sly YOTES have long memories and will be armed to the teeth with vengeance on their minds. HEAT fans won’t want to miss this barn burner! Opening Night is also Banner Night where the trio of championships will hang gracefully from the rafters at AHMA. Regular Season Division Champs, Playoff
Division Champs and KIJHL Playoff Okanagan Conference Champions 2016-17. So, this past Saturday the 2nd the HEAT hosted the Princeton POSSE in the locals only pre-season match. Angst riddled the staff of the hottest product on cool ice, as the unknown of what the roster would perform like was the question mark of the day. While it was only one game, the performance in front of over 200 fans brought a level of relief and momentary calm. Chase scored 3 in the 1st to take a 3-0 lead, Kolten Moore, Ryan Okino and Cody Turner finding the twine. The locals added 1 in the 2nd but so did the POSSE making it 4-1, with Gavin Mattey putting the disk in the net. In the 3rd the HEAT
popped, blasted and tipped 4 more tallys to bring the night to a 8-1 conclusion. Jayce Schweitzer, Mattey with his 2nd, Okino with number 2 of 2 and Brayden Haskell with the exclamation marker. Kayden Virgo played the first half of the game in net and Matthew Ens the last half and both performed well, as memories of Saint Nic still remain in the air. Thirteen rookies got their first look at 2017-18 KIJHL action, including local lads Garrett Jules, Cody Turner and Gavin Mattey. Season Tickets are still available and are a very hot product. Contact Sue at 250-320-5060 to join the fun and save a few dollars, you just might meet some new friends!

NEWS FROM THE BOWLING ALLEY by Calyn Buresh
Hello Again Everyone! Well, we have officially started our 2017/2018 league season! And we are so thrilled to have a ton of bowlers joining us again this season! We are very happy to announce that we are the fullest we have ever been at the beginning of the season! Having said that – we still have a few spots to fill! Our goal this season is to have completely full, jam packed leagues! If you are looking something to do this Winter, come and see us! Perfect for Ladies or Guys Nights Out, Date Night, Family Night, or even join a
league with some co-workers! Help us to make this our best season yet! We have all sorts of new things happening this season at Village Lanes – including Paint Nights, DJ Nights, a revamped Youth Program, and more! We have done some calculations, and you might be surprised to know that over 60% of our league bowlers are from OUTSIDE of Chase! So, let’s correct that! We want to get a chance to meet all the locals who currently aren’t bowling in a league! Stop by, and introduce yourselves! Who knows? You might find
that hobby that you’ve been looking for all along! Will be letting you know who lit up the lanes this week in next weeks column! But mark it on your calendars that on Saturday, September 16th we will be hosting our first DJ Night of the season at Village Lanes! Come out, dance, bowl, and party from 10:00pm-1:00am! Be on the look out for posters around town, and as always if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give us a call! Cheers, and all the best to a new season!
