Ways to Flow with the Salmon Parade

250-679-3261 Chase, BC

by Michelle Tsutsumi

Momentum is building for the Wild Salmon Caravan, calling salmon to their home and spawning grounds in the Adams River, Secwepemculew. The Caravan, which will be travelling from Vancouver to Chase, will be celebrating the spirit of the salmon through ceremony, art and music. Several art workshops have taken place to create ribbon skirts, as well as painted salmon to carry through the parade that will be flowing down Shuswap Avenue on October 12. Join in the parade by mustering at the Chase Curling Club at 10 AM, with the parade flowing down Shuswap Avenue to Chase Street and then winding its way down to Memorial Park. A free feast, open to the community, will take place with drumming, storytelling, and music performances to follow. There is still time to get involved with two art workshops to prepare for the parade! On September 17, a few spaces in the 1:30 to 3:30 PM session are open to create

fabric salmon and water wind puppets. Salmon Arm artist, Rebecca Shepherd, will be facilitating this workshop – bringing a vision to life of people as the riverbed with salmon and water flowing above. This is a free workshop and all materials are provided. Pre-register by emailing goldenearsfarm@gmail.com or calling 250-679-8421. Following this, on September 24, Sunflower Bicycle Repair and the Chase Sunflower will host a bike float art workshop. Stop in and paint salmon cutouts that will be interwoven through the spokes. If time allows, salmon heads and tails will be created to attach to the front and back of the bikes, or bring your own ideas! These will look phenomenal in the parade! The workshop will run from 1:30 to 4:00 and is free. Feeling inspired to be in the parade? Contact Michelle at goldenearsfarm@ gmail.com to sign up.

PROCLAIMING OCTOBER AS MONTH OF THE RETURNING SALMON submitted by Adams Rivers Salmon Society

At the request of the The Adams River Salmon Society, Mayor Rick Berrigan on behalf of the has proclaimed October as the month of the Returning Salmon. We believe that this extra attention will help remind us humans that our salmon populations are in dire need of help. Public education, information sharing and personal examples are very good positive ways to help bring public issues to the forefront. Over 35,000 salmon enhancement volunteers now help BC watersheds salmon species, but we need help. We

need to share the financial impacts to our areas through tourism dollars and the community celebration that salmon seem to engender, bringing together and experiencing other cultures, learning about traditional fishing, the Heritage of the Salmon and the human connection. The Adams River Salmon Society Gala Fundraiser Event, Friday September 22, 2017 at the Quaaout Lodge. The evening will be a traditional Shuswap Secwepemc Food + Cultural experience, with Secwepemc Storyteller Kenthen Thomas, Making of “Uninterrupted” - Wild Pacific Salmon / Adams River Salmon story, Silent Auction items, Salmon Safe Ales + Wines and much more fun. A evening of support for our BC Wild Salmon Stocks.

Chase Country X-mas Meeting by Kelsey Snelgrove

A well loved event, Chase Country Christmas, comes together every December through the hard work of a group of volunteers. There are a plethora of activities and events that make up the Country Christmas festivities. They organize a streetful of vendors, a parade, and the Children’s Christmas Store. The Store accepts donations from the community and sells them at very low prices, raising money for local non-profit groups. The Chase Country Christmas Committee will be meeting to begin planning on Wed. Sept. 27th, 5:00 pm @ Craig’s Bakery. They are always looking for volunteers, so come join them.

OPINION

Canadian, Eh?

by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Freelance Writer I’m a born and bred Canadian who has lived abroad and travelled extensively. The thing that strikes me when I return home is how polite most Canadian’s are. I mean, we seem to apologize even when someone bumps into us. Not that citizens of other countries are rude—although occasionally I have found them curt or somewhat indifferent—but Canadians seem to be sincere in their courtesy, for the most part. When I was living and travelling elsewhere in the past, my husband and I journeyed with Maple Leaf pins on our jackets or bags. I found that being Canadian meant being accepted, indeed, welcomed to the social order of the country where we were residing or visiting. People wanted to know much about Canada, had questions, especially about the distances we travel in this vast land. And many of them had visited here and wanted to talk about their trips. Beyond its people and their way of living, the geography and amazing countryside of Canada is what I especially missed and one of the things that I enjoy most about my homeland. From the magnificent Rocky Mountains of British Columbia to the unique topography of the Maritimes and the Arctic, Canada offers some of the most distinct and stunning scenery in the world. Yes, we endure tough winter weather in many parts of our country, but doesn’t that build character? And yes, we are a small number of people mostly strung along the 49th parallel in a very large country. But doesn’t that help us stick together, lend a hand to our neighbours? And yes, we are a nation founded by varied and differing peoples, including among others, First Nations, Inuit, Metis, French, and English, and one that welcomes others from many countries. Does that not engender tolerance and acceptance? I hope so. Having resided overseas—where I lived by the law and societal norms of that country—I am conscious of wanting Canadian-ism to be preserved. There

has been much talk about ‘values’ and tests of these recently. Well, there are parameters, laws, and regulations that govern who becomes a Canadian citizen, who remains within our borders. And just what are Canadian values anyhow? Certainly, the traits that come to mind are fairness, justice, inclusivity, and liberty. And the next thing that comes to mind is how these principles have not been applied to Canada’s indigenous peoples. This untenable and unfair situation is starting to change, and must change! Natives of this country and early settlers could never have imagined what would eventually ensue, what atrocities would occur, how subjugated the land’s first peoples would become, how colonization would spread like a plague across the land, nor how racism would eventually prevail. Definitely not the Canadian way I value. Canada is considered a land of freedom: freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom to choose. And these liberties must be extended to all. Guarding against dilution of our identity, individually and as a country, is important. Extending comprehensive rights to every resident is imperative. Canadianism could suffer death by a thousand cuts, if we are not vigilant and pro-active within our borders and globally. Summoning the courage to defend what is right, without being racist or narrowminded, is paramount. And it’s Canadian, eh?

I said to the gym instructor, “Can you teach me to do a split?” He said, “How flexible are you?” A clown held a door open for me today. I said, “I can’t make Tuesdays.” I told my doctor that I broke my arm in two places. He told me to stop going to those places. I thought it was a nice jester.

RHONDA KENORAS TRIBUTE NIGHT submitted by Scott Koch

Saturday Night the 16th of September the Chase HEAT are recognizing a fabulous volunteer and fan who passed away in the off season. Rhonda Kenoras was a member of the close knit HEAT family and the Organization wants to take a moment to celebrate all that she was to so many people. “Momma Bear” was always there and scheduled her life around “her” hockey team. The score clock operator at Art Holding Memorial Arena for all levels of hockey, a fan who followed the team to away games, and a dedicated Mom to a ton of kids. Please come out and join family and friends for this event for a very special person. This past weekend the regular season of the KIJHL commenced, and the HEAT can only consider it a lost weekend. Friday night the 8th, the Osoyoos COYOTES came to town and they left with a hard won victory. In the 1st Osoyoos popped in a pair prior to big veteran Zachary Fournier

getting the 1st of the year from Cory Loring and Ryan Okino. In the 2nd the Chase boys took a one goal lead on a pair of tallys. Brett Alexander from Kaden Black and Colten Nikiforuk, and then Loring from Kolten Moore and Fournier. However desert dog Cameron Welch picked up his squad and scored the tie goal, before popping in a shorthanded unassisted biscuit in the basket. Alexander from Brayden Haskell tied things up again before the Coyotes restored the lead from Carter Shannon. In the 3rd Hunter Johnson sealed the deal for a 6-4 win for the road crew. Saturday night the 9th Chase hit the Highway to meet up with the GRIZZLIES in Revelstoke. The wheels on the bus didn’t fall off but the wheels on the ice sure did. A frustrating night of inconsistent calls discombobulated the new version of the HEAT, resulting in a parade to the sin bin all night long for both teams. The locals received 93

We still have space available on Seniors Leagues, Night Leagues and Youth Leagues if you are interested! Don’t hesitate to pop in and see myself or Kelly, and we will be more than happy to get you all signed up! A few mentions for the first week of bowling! Our Club 55+ Men really had an outstanding first week back on the lanes! Jim Dunn set the bar high for the first week, and is averaging almost a 250! Keep it up Jim! Dale Seaman from our Tuesday Club 55 league conquered a 200 average, and Doug Brown from our Wednesday Club 55 group finished the first week at a 209 average! Great bowling guys! The ladies weren’t far behind, but a big shout out to Glenna Berry from our Wednesday league, who is giving

Doug a run for his money, averaging well over 200! In Night league news, Gene Popadynetz started the week off right on Monday averaging a whopping 260+. Great start Popa D! Our mens and ladies high average holders for the centre this week go to Bill Pacholok with a 277 average, and Ali Maki with a massive 265! Well done guys, like I said! A great big thank you to all of our sponsors this year! If you or your business might be interested in sponsoring a category at Village Lanes, give us a call and we can let you know what is involved! minutes in jail for a variety of reasons, none that helped them to a chance at victory. In the 1st the Stoke Bears scored a pair before Black from Jayce Schweizer and Fournier gave the lads hope. In the 2nd Revelstoke got two more. Then in the 3rd they fired in another pair prior to Loring from Cam Watson making it 6-2 in a losing effort. While it wasn’t what the good doctor ordered, there are glimpses of a very young and exciting team forming. Seven of the lads are 17 and two are 16, while the defence currently has only 3 veterans back, the fourth Pat Brady is under contract till month’s end as a forest fire fighter. This weekend the HEAT head to Kamloops and Memorial Arena on Friday the 15th to face the STORM at 7:35 pm. On Rhonda Kenoras Tribute Night, Saturday the 16th at 7:00 pm, the Revelstoke GRIZZLIES pay a return visit and the fans will play a big role in supporting the 2017-18 HEAT. See you there!
