Be smart: be visible: BE SAFE Safety Reminders for Pedestrians, Cyclists and Motorists submitted by CHASE CITIZENS ON PATROL
This summer we have noted a considerable increase in the number of cyclists on the roads in Chase. We were really pleased to see that an increased percentage of these individuals and families were following safe cycling practices by wearing approved bike helmets and adhering to traffic laws. Sadly, though, the majority of cyclists we encounter are still not taking the measures necessary to keep them safe on the roads. Our data shows that of the vast majority of cyclists, young children, teens and adults alike, are riding after dark without helmets, wearing dark, non-reflective clothing and without the legally required lights and reflectors on their bikes. Too often, we see these dark figures flying around corners, zipping out of driveways and running stop signs without checking for oncoming traffic. Not only are they endangering their own well-being but also that of the motorists who are unable to see them until it is too late. Parents, please be sure that you and your children have adequate reflectors on your clothing and that your bicycles and helmets are properly equipped for night riding when going out after dusk. Please remember that in BC, after dark, all cyclists are required by law to have a front white headlight visible for a minimum of 150 metres, a rear red light which should be visible for a minimum of 100 metres, and a rear reflector visible for 100 metres when directly illuminated by a car headlight. These devices should be mounted on the bicycle not attached to the rider. As well, all cyclists are required to wear an approved bike helmet. For
complete information about riding safely and legally after dark please refer to the information found at www.bikesense.bc.ca, or www.icbc.com (bike safety) or go directly to the government of BC website, www.gov.bc.ca (Cycling Regulations, Restrictions & Rules of the Road: Section 183). Pedestrians also need to remember that even if they are wearing reflective clothing and carrying flashlights, it is still harder for motorists to see them at night. Whether walking or riding bikes, we need to be sure to cross only at corners or marked crossings and to take greater care to watch for vehicles turning right or left. Remember too, that we cannot expect to hear vehicles approaching especially as there are more very quiet electric and hybrid vehicles on our roads. Where sidewalks are not available, please be sure to walk facing the traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles. Remove headphones and take a break from your cell phones when crossing streets or walking on the road. Motorists also have an important role to play in pedestrian and cyclist safety, especially during the hours of darkness. Please slow down and yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing at intersections or marked crossings and pass cyclists with caution. Focus on the road. Put the cellphone away and pay particular attention for pedestrians and cyclists when turning at intersections or into driveways. Let’s all do our part to keep us all safe on our roads. Remember, even one preventable injury is too many.

Marion Edith Behn (nee Rose) Dec 20, 1933-Sep 4, 2020
Marion was born in Clarenceville, PQ, and brought up Chateauguay and Stanstead. After secondary school in Westmount and Stanstead, Marion earned a BSc(Hc) at Macdonald College of McGill University and during summers worked as a telephone switchboard operator. It was at Macdonald that she met her future husband, Roger, and they enjoyed 65 years of marriage. After Macdonald, she taught home economics at Smith’s Fall (Ont) Secondary for a year. Marriage and a move to the Lower Mainland of BC led to a job as a laboratory technician in the Red Cross blood lab, eventually becoming chief technician. A further move to Chase and the adoption of two children made Marion a mother. A spell as a bank teller, followed by partnership in Cloud 9 Fabrics led to custom dressmaking and the sewing of many quilts filled her days. Later years were enlivened by weekly Bridge games and a small circle of friends. Always friendly, Marion was a good mother and a great partner, who will be forever missed. 40 years ago Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope for cancer research on Canada’s east coast by dipping his prosthetic leg in the Atlantic Ocean. Terry would run for 143 days until he was forced to end his country-wide marathon in Thunder Bay, Ontario because the cancer had spread to his lungs—a disease that would take him from us a few months later. On September 20th, you’ll have the chance to honour this amazing young athlete and continue his quest to raise money for research into a modern-day plague. Choose the route to safely walk,
run, bike, hike, skate or wheel within your precautionary COVID bubble, and with sponsorships to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation. Support for this special event last year made an enormous difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. And ‘Terry Foxers’ like you helped to fund 437 researchers and 47 research projects in 2019. Do it your way and do a very good thing! Chase Rotary Show Support to 'Cops for Kids'
Cops for Kids" are arriving on Friday September 18th! Usually, they ride through Chase and arrive at Haldane for lunch sponsored by Chase Rotary, Subway and Safety Mart. However, due to Covid-19 they are unable to visit the kids at Haldane Elementary so, this year, Chase Rotary and others will provide lunch to the riders in a private setting. Chase Rotary, Sorrento Subway and the Village Grocer in Blind
Bay are the major sponsors this year and hopefully, next year "Cops for Kids" will return to visit Chase and Haldane. Chase Rotary will make a considerable financial donation to their cause because Chase Rotary know of families who have been recipients of such financial assistance for their children's medical recovery.
20th Anniversary Cops for Kids Ride passes through Salmon Arm
Sick kids can’t quit, and these devoted mounties won’t quit either. The 20th Anniversary Cops for Kids Ride isn’t the celebration they were originally planning, but careful planning has ensured that the event will move forward under a different format. Cops for Kids will have a small group of cyclists pedalling through Salmon Arm on Friday September 18th on their way to Kamloops as a part of the 10 day fundraiser. Presented by the Impact Tomorrow Foundation, the group would normally have a team of riders team pedaling together across the region stopping in each community to raise funds and awareness for local children, but they’ve had to modify their plans for this year. This year, 29 RCMP cyclists will each pedal 1,000km over 10 days, but they’ll do so individually or in small groups from their own homes while a small support crew travels the designated route picking up a small group of 6 local riders each day to cover the leg on behalf of the team. This allows the organization to fulfill their commitment to the local kids facing illness, disability or traumatic crisis who require financial assistance throughout the year. Careful groundwork has created a plan that will not only
abide by public health guidelines to keep the communities and the riders safe, but one that also doesn’t burden the struggling hospitality industry who normally host the team each year. A key component of the safety includes no stops in each community to meet with the general public. Instead, people are asked to line the streets to cheer and wave for the team at a safe distance as they pass through. These waves and cheers will remind the riders of the children who are relying on them this year more than ever, and will serve as the reminder that quitting simply isn’t an option. The pandemic cancelled spring fundraisers, but the small regional foundation has a need that hasn’t taken a break. “Parents with a sick child need our help more than ever,” says Cops for Kids President Grant Fletcher “We’re seeing an increase in a need for our funding, and this is our signature fundraiser each year. Those parents aren’t going to stop, and neither will we.” To catch a glimpse of the designate riders passing through Salmon Arm, supporters are asked to stand safely at a distance on10 Avenue SW from 10th Street SW to 17th Street SW at 9:15am on Friday September 18th.

Aulin House History
With Alex’s retirement in 1945, the Aulins purchased and moved into the Löfmark home and property on Okanagan Avenue, which by that time included the two lots, sans butcher shop, stretching to Coburn Street. By the 1960’s, their next-door neighbours and friends at 829 Okanagan Avenue were Bob and Adelaide Clack. As an addition to the Aulin real estate, widow Adelaide Clack eventually deeded that house and property to Lil, which the Aulins rented to tenants until it too had to be demolished in 2007. The next generation of Aulins at ‘833’ were Alex and Kitty’s son, John Welhelm, who had married Lily (Lil) Dubitz from Alberta. The couple had met in 1949 at a family wedding in Chase, at which Lil was the Bridesmaid and Johnny was the Best Man. It was love at first sight for them, and after two years of correspondence and a second visit, they tied the knot in Edmonton in 1951. They moved in with the senior Aulins in 1951, and eventually acquired ‘833’ when Alex and Kitty relocated to a smaller residence on Hendry Street in Chase. Lil and John maintained the multipurposed home as their residence and rooming house—they lived on the main floor and their tenants had the many bedrooms on the second floor. With the arrival of their growing family of six children, Lil and John would eventually cease to operate the rooming/boarding business from the home. Following their work in sawmilling and logging, in the 1950’s, John and his brother George founded G&J Logging, a company that employed as many as 75 people. John has been described as a great boss, a storyteller, wise, fearless, and honest— someone who lived his life by the Golden Rule. Having served in the Canadian Armed Forces, he was a member of Chase’s Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 107, for 60 years. Lil devoted countless volunteer hours within the community, wrote for the Chase paper, worked in the Village office, was an education advocate, and
was elected as a Trustee with the school district. Their 55-year marriage was a forever love match between to likeminded individuals who thoroughly enjoyed their family and each other. The Aulin children particularly recall happy holiday gatherings at their family home, especially Christmas—a time that was always such fun with many relatives visiting. A skating rink in the front yard, trying to throw balls over the tall roof of the house, climbing fruit trees on the property, and games of kick the can are all fond reminiscences. More on page 11...

Don't Let Summer Go Yet!
Home Remembered
Grandma Kitty had brought beautiful ball gowns with her from Ireland and let her granddaughters dress up in them, much to their delight. Moving upstairs to their own bedrooms (and privacy), once the rooming operation ceased, was such a treat for the Aulin offspring—even though it was chilly up there sleeping under large woolen quilts, with no central heating. The smell of Mom Lil’s bread baking and family members keeping warm during winter around the oil heater in the living room in pre-furnace times are affectionately remembered to this day. And Lil’s famous home-made candied apples prepared for Trick or Treaters at Hallowe’en are still talked about in town. As John and Lil’s lives slowed down
in their retirement years, they thoroughly enjoyed world travel – although one of John’s additional favourite past-times was sitting outdoors on their property, watching folk go by, and chit chatting with them. Needless to say, it was a sad day when Aulin relatives gathered across the street a short time ago to watch the demolition of their family home. However, much as when lives end, but the love does not, residences may have to be torn down, but the memories, the love, the laughter, the tears, and the good times live on with those who shared them all, in that special space. Postscript: Although their vintage home is gone, recognition of this community-minded family remains in the village Avenue named ‘Aulin.’
