Poems & Prose Writer’s Corner Ah, Such Bliss!

© Randi Done, August 27, 2017 Ah, such bliss, this bliss; How can I wield my way thru such bliss ... A child has come. Such sweetness, I cannot bare. This bliss, I do not care to wipe the smile that I wear, for a child has come. Floating on clouds, of quiet joy, jealous distractions pass unseen before this bliss. . Ah, such bliss. All sins that passed before, like floating targets of endless war; Now forgiven, now ignored. For bliss, yes, such bliss heals schisms when love is shared. Suffering, yes, before this bliss; Yet, rolling waves of wisdom shaped, and washed the way for shores to wake to bliss. Ah, such bliss. Once before, this bliss was known. With fallow ground , ripped anew, t`was the day my daughter was born. Now, again, life has its way shorn from pain and hope renewed, this bliss returned, my grand daughter born. Ah, such bliss!

Doctor’s submitted Group Ultra-thankful by Sarah Turgeon-O’Brien The doctor’s group in Chase would like to express our gratitude to the Chase and District Health foundation. Theyrecently purchased an ultrasound machine designed to be used at the bedside. This is a very useful tool to have in an Emergency department. It is typically used in Trauma to evaluate for free fluid in the Abdomen in a timely fashion. It could also be used to find fluid around the heart. Other uses in a small emergency room would include insertion of Intra venous lines when otherwise difficult, finding small abscesses and foreign bodies as

well as air pockets around the lung (pneumothorax) and fluid around the lung. With more experienced users, it could assist in finding blood clots and fractures and it could also point in the direction of gallstones. This very expensive piece of equipment was generously gifted by the Chase and District Health foundation. Upkeep/ maintenance will be done by the Health Authority. Extra training will be done by the Physicians at different courses around the continent.

OPINION

A Pastoral Perspective

U-Thi Sushi and Grill at

718 Shuswap Ave.

By Tyler Harper

The Community of Fires

This has and continues to be a hard season for many in our region and province, from floods in the spring to fires this summer. We are all aware of far reaching effects of the wild fires; from the smoke affecting vulnerable individuals and tourism, to those who have been laboring on the fire lines, or those enduring the unsettling of evacuation orders, to the heartbreak of those who have lost animals, property, or homes. 2017 is a year many of us will not soon forget. Life amongst creation brings its challenges. However, there is an upside to these incredibly hard times. Growing up in Winnipeg, I experienced nature's fury from time to time, from the routine blizzard in the winter, to the near bi-annual inundation of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, we had to keep our eye on the world around us. But as strange as it might sound, as a young person, I came to almost revel in these times of indescribable work. Every time that snowfall became measured in feet, our neighborhood changed, shaking off the isolation, cold and dark, to the warmth of people putting their backs into helping shovel one another's driveways and push out stuck drivers. People who had spent September in petty arguments about who's tree was dropping all the leaves suddenly spent hours helping each other.

Scooter’s Dog Grooming will be closed from Sept. 12th to Sept 21

But nothing brought people together, like facing the threat of erasure of our city by the murky waters creeping towards us from the south in 1997. Rough and tumble inner-city youth and seniors from the suburbs formed sandbag lines, gang members and off duty cops, welfare recipients and those residing in mansions worked side by side to move heaven and earth, or at least a lot of earth. All to stop the mighty waters. This time was hard, but it had a hidden value. We were forced to look our neighbor in the eye, our neighbor down the street and our neighbor across town. Suddenly, it didn't matter what part of the city you were from, all that mattered was a shared humanity and a shared goal. And so it is with the fires, as we collect toothbrushes and clean socks for evacuees, open our houses and barns, think of and pray for communities like Williams Lake and Cash Creek, Chasm and Lake Country, Anahim Lake and Clinton, we are reminded that these are not just dots on a map, but represent homes and communities-- people -and we share so much with. But first of all we share our humanity. Long after houses are rebuilt and life beings to grow through the ash and rubble, may this be the enduring mark of 2017. Tyler (TylerJRHarper@gmail.com) is the Pastor of Chase Evangelical Free Church, 295 Shuswap Ave, Chase, B.C.

Set the balsamic reduction aside to cool. Arrange alternate slices of tomato and mozzarella cheese decoratively on a serving platter. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper, spread fresh basil leaves over the salad, and drizzle with olive oil and the balsamic reduction.

CAMPING SEASON COMING TO AN END submitted by Scott Koch

The long smoky summer days are fading away and the Chase HEAT Junior Hockey Team have just completed their 2017-18 Main Camp. Thirty plus young hockey players spent three days chasing their dream of landing a spot on the 2016-17 Okanagan Division Champions. The next test for the successful 23 athletes are two a day boot camp like practices to get into season ready shape. Part of the trials and errors, is an exhibition game Saturday the 2nd of September versus the Princeton Posse at Art Holding Memorial Arena. Game time is 7:00 pm. The season opens up at home on the 8th versus the perennially proficient Osoyoos Coyotes. For the HEAT and the COYOTES this is their first get together after the local boys took a 3-2 game series to win the Okanagan. To understate the obvious the

desert dogs will arrive in town with their A game in hand and seeking revenge. The local hot product will have their hands full in proving they were worthy of the brief result they worked so very hard to achieve. It will be a season opening buckle up, hair straight back tussle of muscle, skill and daring do… so don’t wait for the next home game to get your hockey fix! Thanks to so many welcoming families and their homes the local franchise has just about enough beds and good homes to house this year’s edition of your HEAT. That being said temporary beds and food may be required in the early days, so don’t hesitate if interested to contact Lana at 250-574-3681. Guaranteed it will be the experience of a lifetime! The players are looking forward to displaying their crash and bash and dipsy doodling in front of the best fans in the KIJHL!
