Interesting harvest!
A tomato ended up growing within the metal arms of a little froggy ornament in Gary and Sharon Greenlees garden in Chase. Before extracting the tomato, they brought the quirky arrangement in for a quick photo.

Chase Creek Falls Rest Area Revitalization Project Submitted by the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce
As the host of the Chase Visitor Centre and the main organization responsible for tourism marketing in the community, the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce is continually working to increase visitor services and enhance guests' experiences of Chase & District. One main area that the Chamber has identified as needing significant attention is the Chase Creek Falls Rest Area. As one of Chase’s most popular destinations, the falls see a consistent flow of visitors throughout the year, many of whom create their first experience of Chase at this site, since the majority of guests are highway travelers looking for a quick break to stretch their legs and enjoy the natural beauty. Unfortunately, before visitors step into the wooded serenity, they pass under the graffitied h i g h w a y bridge, through a neglected picnic area overrun with weeds and splinteri n d u c i n g benches, and past scattered trash and other unpleasantries due to the lack of garbage cans and locked washrooms. So, on September 19th, the Chamber commenced Phase One of its Rest Area Revitalization Project to help clean up the site and begin creating an area that the community can be proud of. With the help from the Chase Lions Club and business members of the Chamber, volunteers spent the morning picking up waste, pruning bushes, removing weeds, and cleaning the picnic tables. “As dedicated members of the community, the Chase Lions Club works
to do at least one environmental focused project each year, and we identified this as an important one to help with” stated the club’s treasurer, Karen Bassett. “It is incredible what 10 people can accomplish in just a couple hours,” added Sandra Welton, one of the directors from the Chamber, “we removed over two full truckloads of waste from around the picnic area this morning!”. A one day clean up of the site is not enough to bring it to its full potential and reflect the beauty of the falls and the community, but the Chamber sees it as an improvement and the first step of what will likely be a year-long project. A formal plan for the final vision is still under development, though there has been significant discussion on the need for improved signage, placement of waste and recycling bins, access to the washrooms, painting & staining features, and trail & accessibility improvements. Recognizing that the site is also a favourite for many locals, the Chamber is encouraging any interested individuals and organizations who would like to help with the planning and implementation of future work to please get in touch by emailing admin@ chasechamber.com, sending a message on Facebook, or stopping by the Visitor Centre and speaking with the VC Manager, Debby Mould.

Chase Rec Society announces Learn to Skate Programs
Learn to Skate programs will be starting on Oct 19 and will run 8 sessions until Dec 7. As with everything else, things will be a bit different this year. Unfortunately there will be no Preschool class this session. We will revisit this decision for the January session. This decision was made because of the obvious need for a "hands on" approach with the youngest skaters. Sessions will be as follows: Eager Beavers (Ages 5 +) Mondays 3:15-4:00 ($64.00) For this group skaters MUST be able to get up and down on their skates on their own and have some skating experience. Skaters can arrive no earlier than 15 mins before the session and must be ready to go on the ice. Preferably with skates (skate guards) on, helmets and dressed warmly and with gloves. Masks must be worn in the arena, unless they are wearing hockey helmets. Jr. Rec Hockey (Ages 7 +) Mondays from 4:00-5:00 (64.00) This session will strictly be hockey skills at this time as no contact or games are allowed. For this group players MUST be able to skate, as well as get up and down on their own. They must arrive no more than 15 mins before the session and be in full gear ready to go on the ice. Masks must be worn until helmets are put on. Here are some other things to expect when registering; • Limited people are allowed in the arena so only one parent/ guardian per skater or player. • Parents may not be able to enter the building with their child depending on the arena's capacity at the time • They will allowed in as soon as possible. • No siblings allowed. • Players must be on time for sessions as doors are locked during practice in order to monitor how many and in the building at one time. • Covid pre-screening will be done before EACH practice, for parent and skaters and players will be as they enter the building. Forms are available by email from Jane Herman jherman@cablelan.net Payment by e-transfer will be noted on the registration form.

Volunteer Extraordinaire
Jane Herman
by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer To say Jane (Beck) Herman has become a fan of Chase is an understatement. Since moving here as a teen-ager, “kicking and screaming” about being dragged to such a small community, she has taken the village to heart—as the town has Jane. The 1973 move with her pharmacist Father and her Mother, which started out as a personal negative, has proven to be a very good thing. “We moved in the summer,” says Jane, “and it didn’t take long before I found Chase to be an interesting and happening place. I was hooked. Loved the town and loved the high school. Got involved with school sports— basketball, softball, tennis and skiing, to name a few—and the student council too.” “Growing up here, there were many local social events as well, for kids and parents—dances, the fire department’s Christmas ball, the Lion’s Club casinos, athletic awards ceremonies, and carnival nights. It was never dull,” she adds with a smile. “I enjoyed the kids that lived here, the ones who camped here, the lake, boating, water skiing—it all kept us busy. Everyone knew everyone and respected each other.” Asked what have been significant events since her move here, Jane cites having the arena built 20 years ago, and the 2003 massive forest fire that burned for nearly two months, August/ September, up a mountain just outside town, threatening the community. “We couldn’t have ice in the arena because the fire Control Centre had taken over that space. And the military personnel helping control the blaze were camped in tents on the school grounds.” Jane would eventually marry Merv
Herman, of the long-time resident Reid family of Chase. “Merv is named after his great Grandfather Merv of M.J. Reid & Company, a pole manufacturer,” she adds. Their three children, Megan, John and Reid, would lead to Jane’s connection to what became her chosen sport, one that involves ice and skates. “Before we had an arena here, son John and daughter Megan both wanted to play hockey,” Jane reports, “which meant years of driving to Kamloops. Fortunately, by the time Reid wanted to get into hockey, the arena was up and running. I almost cried when he got to actually walk to practice, after all our years on the road for that sport.” “And yes, today hockey is my favourite sport,” she adds, “regardless of the figure skating lessons and practice I put in because that’s what girls did years ago.” Jane plays ladies hockey, coaches the under-seven hockey group, and is involved with the Learn to Skate programme—all of which take her to the ice four times a week. Her other volunteer work with what is arguably Canada’s favourite sport, both for spectators and participants, involves the Chase Heat Jr. B hockey organization. “I so enjoy the people volunteering for the team,” she states emphatically. “We’re a close group, all wanting the team and its club to succeed. I’m involved with running the concession at the arena, but everyone pitches in, doing whatever is needed.” “And kudos to Coach Brad Fox and his staff,” she goes on enthusiastically. Extraordinaire Jane Herman
“Team members are encouraged to be an integral part of the community and to contribute. They learn all about being part of a team, on the ice and off the ice, as ambassadors for The Heat, and that area residents support them.” This busy gal also finds time to help out with the Chase Hamper Society’s food bank programme. When asked about advice for those considering volunteering, Jane states, “Take that first step. Don’t be afraid to jump in. Present fresh ideas. Organizations welcome new people. Getting involved with something that’s important to you or something that you enjoy is a win-win.” “If I’m asked why I volunteer so much, I have to say that it’s about what I get out of it. It’s a two-way street. Connections are made, and you meet new folks. Makes you feel good to help with something that goes well. And volunteering even adds to your social life.” In addition to her volunteer contributions, Jane has been employed as a Certified Education Assistant at Chase schools for the last 30 years, currently with the Secondary School.

“It’s a wonderful job,” she says. “I love it. And teachers are so innovative in their approach to education. Students have options in their learning methods.” As a people person, Jane particularly enjoys her interaction with both adults and children, whether through her work or her volunteering. It’s been said that we only truly own what we give away. Jane Herman is a stellar example of this. And as singer/songwriter Murray McLauchlan says in The Farmer’s Song: These days when everyone’s takin’ so much, there’s somebody givin’ back in.” Indeed!

Emergency Support Service teams provide a crucial service in assisting people who have been forced to leave their home in an emergency. This is typically due to fires, floods, landslides, or other events. Residents are provided accommodation, food, and other essentials to help recover after disaster. Chase is currently the only community in the TNRD without an ESS team. We hope you’ll come hear about the valuable work that ESS teams do throughout the province, and how you can help build a team here in Chase.

Thompson Valley residents help the Alzheimer Society of B.C. mark World Alzheimer’s Month Submitted
September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a time to push the global conversation about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias to the forefront.
