he first annual Harvest Fall Fair Dinner and Dance was hosted by community members on Saturday September 21st at Neskonlith Hall. . The all day event invited community members to display and celebrate the abundance of this year's harvest and Secwepemc traditional foods, crafts and medicines. The open invitation was enthusiastically taken up and local growers set up tables featuring the fruits of their summer and spring labours. veggies, everything home grown and home made. A tasting table with traditional foods and a busy kitchen kept the warm atmosphere all day until live music played dinner into the hall and the loonie auction too. The Hall full of hay bails and sunflowers, the harvest grown organically and shared with love, food all day and music to bring the night in was a fantastic celebration indeed that cost nothing more than this season of hard work and joy. BEACONS OF LIGHT TRIBUTE

National British Home Child Day - September 28th 2019 submitted by Sherry Flinn

Canada is lighting up from Newfoundland to Victoria From Castles to Waterfalls. Porch lights or lights in the windows as international tribute to our British Home Children. Many people are not aware that, from 1869 to 1948 over 100,000 children from 4 to 14 were sent right across Canada from the United Kingdom as indentured farm labourers and domestics until the age of 18 years. Some were fortunate to have good homes, however, many were “NOT”. All Suffered from Loneliness and were often not accepted by the communities they were sent to. My Dad at 12 years old was part of this movement and although he was one of the fortunate ones to have a good home the loneliness was still there... belonging...! Angels Among Us There are no words, that can cover what our hearts are feeling. But we would like to thank that staff on 7N RIH, you were all so amazing, as well as the doctors in Chase. To all the homecare staff, you have no idea what you all meant to us, and still do, as well as Judy & Jessica - without all of you helping our father (grandfather) through this journey with MS, we would not have been able to keep him home all those years. To his coffee partner Greg, who came almost every morning, thank you for being such a good friend, not to mention his Tuesday card ladies. Chase Fire Department - you are an amazing dedicated group of people who never failed to help when asked. Thank you. Our father Wayne Amies passed away with family by his side on September 10, 2019. A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE:

You are more than you eat by Tyler Harper

I am sure that we’ve all heard it before - you are what you eat. People in medieval Europe certainly thought this was true. 700 years ago it was assumed that what you ate became part of you — the matter that made up your food became part of the matter that made up you, not just bodily, but holistically: body, mind, and soul. Now, very few —if any— of us are this sort of materialists. But what makes you, you? The Eastern Othodox theologians John Zizioulas (no, my Z key didn’t stick), describes our identity, who each of are like this: “The person is the identity born of a relationship, and exists only in communion with other persons.” Who we are is formed by our relationships. At the core of who we are is the relationships that we have fostered and the relationships we have brushed off. Our relationships shape us, they mold us. Recently I spent time with a widow who had lost her husband of close to 50 years, the way she spoke of the loss wasn’t just like she had lost something or someone around her, it was as if, in the loss of her husband, she had lost part of herself. Relationships are at the heart of Christianity. First between God as

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, then between God and humanity, and finally between our fellow humanity—our neighbors near and far. This is a reality that has permeated our western society and is why we have community spaces, and community halls, and community parks, because we value places that help to develop relationships with others. So often when we realize we need a change in our lives we change a ‘thing’: a new hobby, a new diet, a new car, a new job. These things all affect us and change us, but how attentive are we to our relationships? To something that forms the basis of who we are? Who we invest our lives in and how we invest reverberates in our own lives. We are molded by those who we open ourselves to in relationship and we are formed by how we relate to these persons. We are forged by those persons we chose to forget. What do your relationships say about you? If John Zizioulas is right, then you can tell a lot about a person by who they surround themselves with. Are you investing in relationships that will turn you into the sort of person you want to be? Tyler Harper (tyler@chasechurch.com) is the Pastor at Chase Evangelical Free Church

News from the Bowling Alley submitted by Calyn Buresh, Village Lanes

Happy Weekend, Bowlers! Hope you are all enjoying those first few days of Fall! We are all geared up and ready for another big week ahead! It is almost Tournament Time at Village Lanes, so we are encouraging all of our public bowlers to get in as often as you can before our availability becomes a bit limited! Today I’d like to touch on our big event coming up; The Invitational Open Championships. This is a tournament that Kelly and I created to due a lack of competitive tournaments within British Columbia. This is now our 4th Annual Open Championship and it is being held right here in Chase on October 5th and October 6th.

We strongly recommend that if you are curious to see what “Good bowling” looks like, to pop in and watch some of British Columbia’s best bowlers duke it out for bragging right, and for $4000.00 cash! This year we have teams from Chase, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Williams Lake, Kelowna, Castlegar, and Fruitvale. Village Lanes will host a total of 64 bowlers this weekend, so if you are wondering why our little Village is busier than the norm, that could be why! We would also like to wish the best of luck to the following Chase bowlers: Derek Vigue, Lyle Coates, Darcy Munday, Matthew Griffin, Sam Steil, Shelley Munday, and Amy Frech. Let’s take the gold at home!

years of serving book lovers, is Western Canada’s largest celebration of literacy and reading. The five day event strives to promote this by bringing the literature of Canadian, and particularly British Columbian, artists to as broad an audience as possible. Its purpose and mandate are to: • Foster an awareness and appreciation of the printed word in Canadian culture • Involve the residents of Vancouver in a celebration of writing and reading • Promote the importance of literacy in the lives of all Canadians • Attract a line-up of internationally celebrated and recognized Canadian literary talents to the annual festival. “It will be an enlightening and thought-provoking event,” says Parks Mintz, “and I’m excited to be participating in it.” This enthusiastic and talented author will also be part of the Grand Forks Library Writers’ Series on October 5th and has upcoming book signings in Surrey, Trail, and Quesnel.

Her book “Resolve—The Story of the Chelsea Family and a First Nation Community’s Will to Heal” was published in May of this year and has been very well received. “Most importantly,” she adds, “it will be a great opportunity to highlight the story of an amazing Indigenous couple, Andy and Phyllis Chelsea, of the Alkali Lake First Nations community, near Williams Lake. What was accomplished there in the 1970’s and 80’s resonates to this day. The Chelseas have been called upon to take their message of sobriety and recovery across Canada as well as internationally.” Word Vancouver, marking 25

SOME UNANSWERED QUESTIONS submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat

After 4 games in the KIJHL Regular Season the local Chase HEAT are head scratching as they look for what is missing in a 5000 piece puzzle. Of course it is early and the players are working on chemistry with teammates, so maybe we all need to be a little patient. The expected didn’t happen this past weekend, working extra hard in practice hasn’t yet translated into success in games. The weekend recap follows. Friday night the 20th of September the 52 passenger land cruiser sailed south to Kelowna for a face to face clash with the CHIEFS. The “Little Apple” crew get off to a quick start getting a pair of man advantage markers in the first 6 minutes of the contest. Rookie Corson Nordick gets his first KIJHL goal assisted by Colton Nikiforuk and Tyson Lampreau, at the end of 20 it is 2-0 home team. In the 2nd Brandon Gremaud from Breckin Erichuk and Trevor Kennedy ties the game up. However Kelowna fires in a counter before Evan Hughes on the powerplay ties it up from Gremaud and Nikiforuk. In the 3rd the two teams exchange goals, Hughes getting his 2nd goal from Kennedy and Gremaud. After 60 minutes its 4-4 and sudden death overtime is on the evening agenda. No scoring in the first 4 on 4 five minute extra stanza, but in the 2nd 3 on 3 overtime the CHIEFS pop in the winner. A single point for the HEAT for the long ride home. Saturday night at the Art Holding Memorial Arena finds the Golden ROCKETS in town for the first time in four years. Once again the hot hand Hughes gets the HEAT on the board from the “twins” Corson and Haden Nordick. Unfortunately that is all the scoring for the night even though 41 shots are fired at the Golden tender. The visitors get a pair in the 2nd and a trio in the 3rd period to skate back home with a 5-1 victory. Ouch! Next on the calendar are two home games, Friday the 27th versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS, and Saturday the 28th versus the Kamloops STORM. Both games commence at our “Chaos Castle” at 7:00 pm. 4 important points on the line versus Divisional rivals. Heat Beat: In Kelowna’s home opener on Friday the game was delayed 30 minutes as an excellent tribute was paid to Grant Sheridan. Our friend Grant ( CHIEFS owner/governor/general manager) was stricken with bacterial meningitis in March during KIJHL playoffs. His passing at 47 years of age impacted the hockey world as Grant was a visionary and strong voice for Junior B Hockey in British Columbia. He will be missed by his family, team, community and the entire KIJHL. All players this season are wearing GS stickers on their helmets in commemoration. The CHIEFS and HEAT have always had a special bond and we were proud to be a part of a very special evening with our friends in Kelowna.
