D.O.A. Returns to play at Crannog Ales 20 years before Canada’s first organic, on-farm brewery was founded, its head brewer’s punk band played with D.O.A. in Vancouver. This September's gig is proof that old punks still carry on being radical and playing great music. On Sunday, September 26 one of Canada’s seminal punk bands returns to play at Crannóg Ales. They are joined by one of the newest skate punk bands, Lets Go from Kamloops. D.O.A. will be playing all the songs from their first album, released in 1981, as well as their latest 18th album, Treason. Their songs remain raw, topical and totally political. After all, as their tagline says, “Talk - Action = 0”. D.O.A. lead singer Joey “Shithead” Keithley has been called a cultural politician, trying to change the world from outside the system. Joe got elected in 2018 as city councillor in Burnaby, and is now changing the system on the inside. He has worked hard to
provide affordable housing and much needed help for the disadvantaged. Many have compared Joe to a modern day Woodie Guthrie, and he is always looking for a way to push grassroots democracy. Like his idols Woody and Pete Seeger, he and the band won’t give up. “Tenacity, idealism, hardcore politics and hard work keep both the brewery and the band going - but punk rock makes it all fun,” says Brian MacIsaac, head brewer and founder of Crannóg Ales. “We are stoked to have a punk gig at the brewery again, they’ll out-shout the rooster." Since both beer farmers and livestock have to get up early, this is an afternoon gig. Doors at 3:00, bands start at 4:00 - 8:00. Bannock and beer on site, camping is available close by in Sorrento. G i v e n the current environment, tickets for the gig are refundable if it has to be cancelled “due to fire or plague” as the organizers say.

What do you see on the sandy beaches? What do you see when you really start to look? Help identify what is living in the lakes and rivers and win SUP or Kayak rental for two for a day! The Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society is seeking your help to identify shellfish living in our lakes and rivers. Searching for shells on the beach is a great way to learn about what lives in an environment. By entering this competition and sharing what you see, you can help us to detect any potential invasive species like Zebra and Quagga mussels or invasive freshwater clams – and be in to win a day’s SUP (stand up paddleboard) or kayak rental for two from Shuswap Marina on the Shuswap lake! To be in to win 1. Take a clear, close up photo of any shell you find on the shores of any lake or river in the Columbia Shuswap Region (turn on the location services on your phone so it records the GPS location). 2. Please do not disturb or collect the shell (it may contain a live animal!) 3. Make a photo post of the shell on Facebook or Instagram, tag @ columbiashuswapinvasives and use hashtags #Whatisthatshell #ShellsoftheShuswap 4. To enter the competition, visit our social media channels: Facebook and Instagram. 5. One shell photo post per entry, you may enter as many shell photos as you like! 6. Share your post with friends to receive a bonus entry! 7. Competition closes 15 September 2021. Many thanks to Shuswap Marina for donating the prize for this competition! This competition is not affiliated with Instagram or Facebook What are invasive shellfish? Zebra and Quagga mussels are two
species of small, freshwater shellfish that have an incredible destructive potential. Originating from Europe, the mussels now occur in parts of eastern and central Canada, but fortunately they are not yet known to have invaded British Columbia. Mitigating the impacts of invasive mussels costs billions of dollars every year in eastern Canada and the US. Freshwater invasive clams are small bivalve shellfish, originating in Asia. An individual can produce up to 70,000 eggs per year. They are filter feeders that can reduce biodiversity and food available for fish. Dense populations may have the potential to clog filters on hydro systems and water pipes, imposing costly maintenance. Unfortunately, removal options of these invasive species are limited once they are established in a waterbody. The best option is to prevent the spread of these organisms. Help prevent the spread by always Cleaning, Draining, and Drying your watercraft, fishing gear, and water toys if you move them from one lake or river to another. If you are bringing a watercraft to BC, you must stop at any watercraft inspection stations that are open. Any suspected transport or possession of zebra and quagga mussels should be reported to the Provincial RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277. For more information about bringing a boat into BC, visit the provincial website https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/ invasive-mussels/bringing-your-boat-to-bc. The Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention, management and reduction of invasive species in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. CSISS is thankful for the generous support of the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Shuswap Watershed Council, Columbia Basin Trust, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, and the Province of BC. Chase Heat
If anyone has inadvertently been missed, please contact The Chase Sunflower with your name. Acknowledging everyone is the goal. Rick Iglesias (or “Julio” as the team affectionately calls him) has contributed his assistance to The Heat since its inception in 2011-12. Taping sore wrists, ankles or knees, having ice packs at the ready, packing for road trips, and ensuring everything is in place for game-day are all part of his job. “I’m a sports-oriented type,” says Rick, “and being part of a team works for me—not to mention, taking me back to my youth and the sports I enjoyed. It also enriches my life, and I so admire my fellow volunteers and the loyal fans.” Game announcer (and radio commentator) Fred Bott couldn’t agree more. “And you know, I just enjoy covering the games—and hope the fans enjoy my banter,” he says with a smile. Having been with the team since the Heat ‘hit the ice,’ Fred attests to the fact that anything that’s given through volunteering comes back tenfold.
on/off-site, remote service & sales
Another vital aspect of team operations centres around the billet homes generously provided by local citizens for players from elsewhere. Opening their doors and their arms to lads who are away from family undoubtedly makes the absence of their home turf a little easier. While there is some compensation to offset the grocery bill, the warm welcome and guidance these ‘second families’ extend are priceless. Chase has a talented team on the ice and a great team off-ice who keep everything humming along in the background. The boys love the game and fans love the boys—as well as their supporters. Those who freely give so much are entirely appreciated for all they do—as are the arena staff. They’ve all scored with the hometown squad’s followers! The Heat’s first exhibition home game is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, and their regular season home opener will be on Friday evening, October 1st — chances to cheer on the team and chat with their highly valued volunteers.

September is Literacy Month Community-based literacy programs cover a wide range of program types. They include small group or one-toone tutoring for children or adults, programs for families or seniors, workshops, seminars, and one-time events that provide information and raise awareness about the importance of literacy. Programs may be specifically for children, youth, adults, seniors, families, or community wide. “Community literacy involves the development of literacy and learning skills
(shared from Decoda) for any individual or group of individuals outside of the formal education system. It is learning that happens in the context of home and c o m m u n i t y, and it happens as a collective approach.” Literacy and essential skills are defined as the skills needed for work, learning and life. They provide the foundation for learning other skills and help people evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. We help employers learn how literacy and essential skills can improve their
business productivity and safety record. We work with employers to embed literacy and essential skills thinking into everyday practice, as well as to improve the skills of employees. When literacy and essential skills are part of workplace thinking and practice: • workplaces are safer and more productive • turnover rates are lower • retention is increased • employees have improved selfconfidence and show more initiative Fostering Literacy supports schoolage children who struggle with reading. Children practice and grow their reading skills with a trained tutor in a one-onone setting, with the emphasis on making reading fun.
