Couple Appreciates Support After House Fire
C
hase residents Toria and Shane Setka-McMahon are expressing appreciation for the support they have received from the community after they lost everything in a house fire early on the morning of August 30th, 2020. Shane and "I just want to say thank you McMahon to this amazing community of Chase!! The support and donations and all the love we have seen and felt in the last few days after what we have been through has been amazing! I wish I could hug everyone right now," Shane said in a
Facebook post to the community. A friend created a GoFundMe to help the couple out, and the fundraising goal of $8000 was quickly surpassed. The Setka-McMahons have lived in Chase for almost three years, and Toria Setka- the outpouring of support has only reinforced their decision to move here. "Our hearts are forever in this place and want to give back as much as we have been given! We are not done here," said Shane.

Annual Raise a Reader Campaign Has Some Changes submitted by Barbara Maher, Literacy Outreach Coordinator
Raise a Reader 2020’s campaign is coming up but due to COVID- it’s a different format this year. Instead of seeing us in bright orange t-shirts hawking papers, we are asking you to donate online at raiseareader.ca This year we are running an online campaign from September 21st to 25th, 2020. Kamloops This Week will feature a special insert on Wednesday, September 23rd celebrating literacy work in our community. Literacy Matters! Please continue to support this important work. All the money donated will help support local literacy programs for all ages. So, from Sept 21st to September 25th, please keep these programs going by donating here. www.raiseareader.ca Your donation will help us to continue with programs such as One to One reading, Mother Goose, Red bookshelves, adult computer classes, Family skate day, K’Fair, Reading with Santa, Books for Christmas Hampers and more. We also have new programs that are on hold due to health directives. There are other options available to show support for the Raise a Reader
campaign: 1. Shop Local! - Safety Mart Food. On Wednesday September 23rd Safety Mart customers will be asked if they would like to add a donation to their purchase. Customers will then write their name on a card and they will be posted on the wall for everyone to see and know they support literacy programs in their community
around town

Joan Alberta McMillan
It is with sorrow we announce Joan Alberta McMillan nee Fleet passed away in Kamloops on Friday Aug 28, peacefully at age 94. Joan was born in Calgary March 3, 1926 to Mary & Arthur Fleet and is the last of her generation. During world war 2 her parents billeted conscripted military persons from all over the world, Australia, Holland, UK being just some of them. Her friendships and correspondence have lasted more than a lifetime as the daughters and sons of these billeted people have continued to write and visit over the course of 70 years. She started her 37 year career with CP Rail as young woman, retired in June of 1979 when she married Gordon Daniel McMillan who she met as he was researching the McMillan family tree. He identified Joanie as a cousin and immediately put her to work tracking down other McMillans. It was a wonderful loving partnership and a life changer for Joanie as they spent spring and fall in Mobuck, Alberta, summers in Scotch Creek then Chase BC and winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona with Bill and Vi McMIllan. She was a wonderful, supportive step mum to Kate & Ann McMillan, who will greatly miss her as will her cousin Lil Wray, her other many relatives in Kamloops and her friends at Chartwell. Joanie loved her Bill’s – Bill MacKenzie & Bill Green along with her Scottie dogs Max & Geordie She will be in our hearts forever There will be a small private service in the Schoening Funeral Chapel, Kamloops on Wednesday, September 9th ,with the hope of a celebration the summer of 2021 where she will be intered at Pleasant Street Cemetery, Kamloops between her husband Gordon, and John McMillan, the first McMillan from Scotland who died in July 1910 Should friends desire, donations to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home who were so kind would be appreciated in her memory. Condolences may be expressed at www.schoeningfuneralservice.com.
Thank You
I would like to thank my family and friends from Chase, Kamloops & Blind Bay. Thank you for all the support you've given me since my dear Paul Relland passed away. A special thank you to the town of Chase for allowing me to have Paul's service in the community hall. To Ivan Hawley for setting up the date with Billie of Creekside and Chris who helped. To Vern for setting up the chairs and tables and much more to LaMont Schmidt for doing the wonderful service and Dodd my son for doing the eulogy, it was all heartfelt. - Sharron Relland

Strides for Diabetes: Awareness Campaign Currently, one in three Canadians has diabetes or prediabetes. These numbers are a lot more staggering than the Covid pandemic we are facing right now. Diabetes has been a pandemic for many years, but does not receive the attention that it deserves. Previous research shows that those 20 years of age today face a 50 % chance of developing diabetes in their lifetime. Recent studies have shown that less than 50 per cent of all Canadians can identify the early warning signs of diabetes Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 to 95 per cent of diabetes cases, and increasingly in children. Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes, can often be stopped or lessened with lifestyle changes including weight loss, diet, and exercise. Complications related to diabetes are serious and can be life-threatening. Annually,
people living with diabetes account for: • 30 per cent of strokes, • 40 per cent of heart attacks, • 50 per cent of kidney failure requiring dialysis and • 70 per cent of nontraumatic amputations in Canada each year. The Chase Lions Club will be opening their concession at the Chase Lions RV Park, located at 625 Mill Road, on Saturday Sept 5, from 11 am to 7 pm. We will be serving up Strides Burgers, hotdogs, fries, poutine, and popcorn. On site we will have literature available from the Canadian Diabetes Foundation for more information and self checklists. Come support the Chase Lions Club, and the Canadian Diabetes Foundation will receive all the proceeds from this event.
