Board to Decide on Outdoor School in December

T

he hard work of the parent group advocating for an outdoor school in Chase has resulted in the education board officially considering the idea! The Kamloops/Thompson Board of Education has approved a feasibility study on opening an Outdoor School as a School within a School at Haldane Elementary. The study, which will commence

immediately, will outline the costs, HR considerations, facility needs, curriculum, revenue and implementation timeline. The feasibility study will take place over the next 4 months with a recommendation about whether to proceed with the Outdoor School concept going to the Board in December for a final decision.

Physican Coverage at Chase Clinic

CINDY DERKAZ NORTH OKANAGAN-SHUSWAP

submitted by the staff at the Chase Medical Clinic

We hope everyone has enjoyed the summer season. As fall approaches we just wanted to provide an update about physician coverage at the clinic. We are looking forward to welcoming back Dr. Anita Redel and Nurse Practitioner Keltie Everett from maternity leave in October. We also wanted to reassure patients of Dr. Ian and Cynthia Lau’s practice that locum coverage is available, and you do not need to find a new physician. We wish Dr. Ian and Cynthia Lau much luck in their new endeavors. Although we are sad to see them leave, we are working to find a suitable replacement physician for Dr. Lau’s practice. We recognize that it can be frustrating not to see your regular provider, but we want to assure you that we have locums to cover the practice. If

you have any medical needs or concerns, you are welcome to book an appointment and we will ensure you are looked after. The Chase Medical Clinic does have a wait-list for patients who do not have a primary care provider, if you have questions about this, you can call and speak to our medical office assistants, or contact HealthLink at 8-1-1. As flu season is right around the corner, we do recommend a yearly flu vaccine for most people, especially those with chronic medical conditions or young children. Keep your eyes open for public health clinics and feel free to ask your health care provider or pharmacist in the coming months about getting your flu shot.

Obituary Valery Reid 1943 - 2019 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Valery Reid (Carate, Spafford), beloved mother, Nana, cousin and friend. She passed peacefully in her sleep on August 3rd with her daughters by her side. She was 76. Val was born on May 11, 1943, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She left Winnipeg very young with her foster parents, Mildred and Bruce Spafford, settling in Prince Rupert.. On March 28, 1962, she married Terrence Morley Reid. They raised three daughters, Marjorie, Robin, and Teresa. Val was an avid gardener her whole life. She loved animals, and always had a cat or two (or three) around. She was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for most of her adult life. A Celebration of Life will be held for Val on Saturday, September 6th at 4pm in the Chase Legion, downstairs. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate your support of Pawprints Animal Rescue Foundation of Chase - a memorial fundraiser was created in Val’s name after this generous pet rescue took in her longtime feline friend, Tabitha, after her passing.

Another Successful Lakeside Music Series! submitted by Chase and District Festival Society

As kids return to school and the evenings get cooler, the memories of live music, good company, and community spirit still echo through Chase. This summer’s Village of Chase Lakeside Music Series featured ten days of live music and activities for everyone to enjoy. The fun kicked off with the annual Canada Day parade along Shuswap Avenue and followed by games, food, drinks, music, and fireworks at Chase Memorial Park. The next night, Music on the Lake began with a rocking performance by Shattered Blue, and the incredible acts continued every Tuesday in July and August. On August 13th, Chase celebrated the 10th annual Interior Savings CornStock, which included engaging crafts for kids (and those young at heart), and of course, hot buttered corn provided by Pete Murray’s Corn Farm - who celebrated their 40th year in business. The skies remained smoke free all summer and the crowds kept showing up in support of this great summer event. The Chase and District Festival Society would like to thank all the guests, sponsors, and volunteers for making the 2019 Village of Chase Lakeside Music Series an absolute success: Alison Lauzon, Ali Maki, Amy Clowater, Andy & Billy Phillips, Andy & Cece and the locals, BC Responsible Gambling Program, Ben Klick, Brent Chamberlain, Brent Lubeck, Bev Iglesias, Brock Endean, Chase & District Chamber of Commerce, Chase Citizens On Patrol, Chase Country Inn, Chase Evangelical Free Church, Chase Fire Rescue, Chase Legion 107, Chase Lions Club, Chase Museum & Archives, Chase RCMP, Chase Rotary Club, Chase Sunflower, Chief Cliff Arnouse, Chief Judy Wilson,

Meet the New Museum Curator:

Breanne Malo Brianne Malo has taken the reins as the Curator of the Chase and District Museum and Archives. Let's get to know her! I’m originally from Port Coquitlam, B.C. and when my parents retired to this area, I decided to leave the city as well to enjoy a quieter lifestyle. History has always been an interest of mine and so when it came to choosing a career path it just made sense to me to look into working in a museum somewhere. I knew that meant I would have to attend post-secondary so I enrolled right out of high school. Received my Associate of Arts Degree from Douglas College two years later and then found out that the school had a special exchange program with another institution in Wales! I jumped at the chance to travel overseas, and the added bonus of receiving a degree equal to one earned in Canada, but in half the time. After arriving at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, eight months passed by in a flash of coursework and travel, and at the end of my adventure I had my Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in Anthropology! I did have the opportunity to work for a little while at R. J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum and I absolutely loved it there so when I saw the job posting to come work here in Chase at the museum I didn’t waste any time in applying. Working as a museum curator is my dream job and now that I’ve had some time to investigate the collection here and get a feel for the place, I have some ideas percolating for future displays. I’m definitely looking forward to getting artifacts out of storage and out on display. I do have two new exhibits planned about some local residents, which should be up in the coming weeks. So watch our social media to know when those will be up! Also consider this an open invitation for anyone to come and say hello. As a transplant to the area I don’t know that many people yet and I’m still learning my local history, so I’d love to talk to people! If you still need an icebreaker, I collect postcards, I love to visit cemeteries, I read through the dictionary cover to cover, and I’m learning American Sign Language!
