Chase Minor Hockey joins nationwide hockey initiative

In 2020 a new identification program was introduced to baseball in Montreal to bring awareness to the abuse and harassment new or young umpires faced while trying to umpire the sport they love. It’s no secret the high number of referees and officials who quit due to abuse and harassment they receive at hockey games. So obviously this Green Arm Band Initiative also quickly caught on in hockey in cities such as Ottawa and Montreal, and also moved into Nova

Scotia last year. This upcoming season, CHASE MHA has decided to adopt the Green Arm Band Initiative for our young and new officials to try and bring awareness and support our local officials who experience harassment or abuse. We want to provide an environment in Chase where a child or new official can learn from mistakes rather than feeling the wrath of parents, coaches or spectators.

Village of Chase Message from the Mayor

Being on evacuation alert for almost two weeks now has taken its toll on everyone in Chase. While being on alert can be scary, Chase has fared well so far thanks to the great work of many agencies and individuals.

On behalf of all of Council I would like to thank Chase Fire Rescue, Adams Lake Indian Band fire department as well as CP Rail’s water train for their continued efforts to assist BC Wildfire to reduce the threat of fire to the East of Chase. In addition, a big thanks to the Pritchard Fire department and the Ashcroft Fire Department for helping with structural protection and being available to provide fire protection to Chase while our crews were assisting with the wildfire efforts.

I would also like to thank the Village of Chase staff as well as the TNRD for their support. Additionally, thank you to the RCMP for their continued efforts in managing a most challenging situation. I especially want to thank the community members and groups who have gone above and beyond to help those who have been impacted by the fire. The efforts of everyone just shows what great community spirit we have.

At the time of writing this letter, the Village remains on evacuation Alert. While I am very hopeful we will come out of this okay, until more of the active fire to the East of us is contained, we need to be ready, while staying positive.

As with all other local governments, during an emergency event, the elected officials step back while the staff members do the work that is required under the local government emergency response model, including informing the community of evacuation Alerts.

I as others feel truly sorry for those in other nearby communities that have not fared so well. Our hearts are with you.

Chase & District Recreation Society – Supporting Sports & More!

To say the Chase & District Recreation Society has been a plus for the area is definitely an understatement. What the organization has accomplished has been of value to residents, businesses, and visitors—in accordance with the mandate it was based on over 50 years ago.

The facilities developed by the Society, a registered nonprofit charitable organization, continue to offer recreation, exercise, and fun for locals at the Art Holding Memorial Arena and the Sunshore Golf Club.

The Society’s nine dedicated Directors continue the legacy established decades ago, serving residents and those who visit. The many activities offered by the Village of Chase are a positive draw for those moving here or folk just passing through— its ice arena, golf club, bowling, curling, hiking, x-country skiing, fishing, boating, and water sports on our lovely lake.

With the generous support of the Holding family, Chase and area citizens, and the backing of the Village, fundraising for the arena was accomplished under the theme “Proudly together, we’ll build and enjoy a better future!” And the $2.2 million arena costs came to fruition, with groundbreaking at the site during the summer of 1999.

The Village of Chase is currently the owner of the arena building, with Larry Pittendreigh (grandson of Art Holding) serving as Arena Director. And it should be noted that the arena was built on land donated by the late Henry Grube— together indeed, undeniably a community project.

It was the home ice of the Chase Chiefs hockey team from 2007 to 2010 and is presently home base for the Chase Heat. In addition to that popular on-ice group, many others enjoy activities under the rafters of the Art Holding Arena: minor hockey, men’s/women’s/junior hockey, skating lessons, public drop-in ice skating, roller derby, trade shows—even graduation ceremonies and weddings have been conducted within this vital Chase structure.

The popular Sunshore Golf club and 9-hole course was almost lost years ago. Built in the late 1960’s as part of a development on the site of the former Hysop family farm, further expansion in 2006 threatened the continued existence and operation of the golf course. However, a group of local residents took a stand—834 signed a petition to stop

the destructive plan, rallying together to purchase the club through the Chase Recreation Society. Larry Pittendreigh and current Society President Ron Anderson spearheaded informing citizens of the situation through a door-to-door campaign and the petition.

The golf club deal had a very tight timeline. Hence, 52 individuals made unsecured $10,000 loans to the Recreation Society, knowing such loans may not be repaid. The Society secured a bank mortgage with the Village of Chase as guarantor in order to complete the $900,000 purchase. The mortgage and personal loans produced $1,075,000, allowing for a $175,000 financial cushion, beyond memberships and fees, to cover upcoming expenses. Another example of pulling together A $100,000 contingency fund is maintained by Sunshore to this day.

Another example of the community support for the golf club is clearly indicated by the annual volunteer hours contributed:

Gardening 500 hours

Maintenance 300 hours

Management 1,000 hours

In many ways, community-based recreation serves as the glue that holds a town together—and activities involving children often lead to the future steadfast volunteers needed, when those kids are adults.

And aren’t we glad! Many thanks to all those who assist with facilitating local sports and providing enjoyment— especially the Chase & Area Recreation Society which continues to unerringly support the “move it or lose it” truism.

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR OUR SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY

In the fall of 2020, a group of local farmers got together to form the Chase and Area Farmers’ Institute. Since then we have been busy promoting farmers and farming in our community. We want to celebrate rural life and the collaborative efforts of small scale farms. The Farmers’ Institute emphasizes the practice of regenerative farming while contributing to local food security. Because we wanted to get to know our community better, in the spring of 2022, we conceived of the idea of a local farm tour where you can meet the farmers who grow your food and learn about their farming practices. This September

Please continue to donate! Donations, in Memory of Donations, and Estate planning Bequethments. This is our only form of funding for the purchase of Medical Equipment (Space Lab, portable Ultrasound, most recently “Lucas” Chest compressions and 2 specialized Chairs for the Adult Day Services.

Mail donations to PO Box 1099, Chase BC, V0E 1M0 or check out our website at www.cdhsf.ca to donate online.

Tax deductible donations and receipts provided upon request.

10th we will host the first Chase and Area farm tour, as long as it is safe to do so given the active wildfires around us. The public is invited to begin the tour at Golden Ears Farm at 11:00am. There, farm guests will receive a passport which will be stamped at each farm on the tour. From Golden Ears, carry on to UpHill Farm at noon, then to Ikigai Vegetables at 1:00pm and finally to Notch Hill Community Growers at 2:30pm. At the end of the tour, guests with all 4 stamps will have their name entered in a draw for a hamper of delicious farm goods. We look forward to seeing you on the tour! Pack snacks and lunch and dress for the weather. For the sake and safety of farm animals, please leave your dog in the car or at home. For more info: chasefarmersinstitute@gmail.com

Arm Bands Urge Patience for Refs

As part of this program, Local Referee in Chief, Lee Melvin and other Executive Members will be at the rink supervising the development and providing feedback to these young officials in a positive manner. We do not want our officials being yelled at, it does nothing for their development as an official or a human being. “These new Officials are usually children most of the time, and yelling at or intimidating children, or any volunteer is not acceptable in Chase Minor Hockey” said Melvin.

Melvin continues, “we are a small

association trying to develop officials from within. Please be patient and understanding that you cannot develop a referee overnight.”

CMHA Executive reminds parents and fans that It takes time, instruction, games and coaching to develop officials, same as it takes to grow players. CMHA reminds you that if you see a referee wearing a green arm band, encourage them rather than critique them. Cheer them instead of yelling at them. And remember this is a game, played by children.

A Celebration of Community Support & Spirit

The culmination of the Village of Chase Lakeside Music Series, marked by the final evening of Music on the Lake, was met with resounding success and an overwhelming display of community support. The last-minute Wildfire Relief Fundraiser, not only drew the participation of over 1,000 enthusiastic attendees but also resulted in a remarkable achievement of raising more than $11,500 in generous donations.

The evening’s festivities commenced with a spirited performance by The Liz Blair Project, originally slated for August 22nd. Their high-energy set at 6pm set the tone for an evening of musical excellence. Subsequently, the stage saw the talents of Ben Klick, Tanner Dawson, and their exceptional circle of collaborators, who delivered a dynamic and interactive performance that captivated the audience.

The series concluded with door prize draws, a fitting reward for those who actively engaged throughout the summer by collecting stamps. It is with great pleasure that we extend our congratulations to Patricia Simpson,

Heather Strack, Donna R., Bobby Burke, Erin Marshall, and Penny Hanna, the deserving winners of this year’s door prizes.

As we reflect on the resounding success of Music on the Lake and the broader Village of Chase Lakeside Music Series, we must express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated volunteers of the Chase & District Festival Society. Their unwavering commitment and tireless efforts were instrumental in orchestrating a summer of exceptional events that brought the community together.
