The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove Bigger is Better, right? “Weighing in” at a whopping 20 pages, you are reading the largest issue of the Chase Sunflower ever published! I am wondering if my photocopier will be up for this task, as this is unchartered territory. If you are reading this, then mission accomplished. A huge thank you to everyone who has submitted articles and columns, blurbs of any kind. It really makes my life easier, especially with a large sized issue like this. And I know I am always repeating this but I have to give a huge thank you again to the advertisers. They truly support the whole framework of the Sunflower as well as my life here in this beautiful Village. It’s exciting for me as the editor/publisher to have such a large issue, and it’s also an exciting time for Chase. There is a lot to do and a lot to talk about. The Community Event Bulletin is stuffed with activities and events with more on the horizon. The dominant run of the salmon
and the Salute the Sockeye celebration brings visitors from around the world to our neck of the woods. Chase will be choosing it’s next Mayor and Council in the upcoming municipal election. This will be my first election season while running the Sunflower, so I am sure I will be learning a lot along the way. I hope to bring you some interesting coverage on the candidates up until the election on October 20th. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Oh and speaking of getting bigger, many people missed my first announcement and I am still getting many ponderous “is she, or isn’t she” looks; I am going to be having a baby near the start of December. I should proof-read this but I have to start printing right now, as it’s going to take 25% more time than usual to print. Hopefully you enjoy this especially large edition of the Sunflower.

Tips for Enjoying the Salmon Run
The ‘Salute to the Sockeye Festival,’ will feature Indigenous cultural activities, general entertainment, local FULL COLOUR artisan wares, souvenirs, and local and Indigenous food vendors. The opening ceremony for the festival, as well as the official renaming ceremony of the park, will occur on September 30th at 1:00 pm. Arrangements are being made for a bus service that will run between Kamloops and Salmon Arm to help locals attend the opening ceremony as well as during the Thanksgiving weekend (watch out for more information on this bus service on www.salmonsociety.com). Admission fees to the festival are only $5 a car. This fee goes to supporting the running of the festival (e.g., portable toilets, security, site maintenance, First Aid, etc) and is administered through The Adams River Salmon Society. Please consider volunteering for this event. The festival only happens because of the dedication of volunteers who dedicate hours during the salute to help with parking, admissions, sales and ambassadorial/guiding duties. Consider coming out for a day or more to volunteer and represent your community. Please contact Blair at volunteers@ salmonsociety.com to sign up. Volunteers committing to more than 30 hours of service for the Salute receive a free softshell jacket to keep and are eligible to complete complementary training to
become certified BC Super Hosts. Finally, to make the most out of this amazing natural phenomenon here are 1-COLOUR five tips on how to make the most out of your salmon viewing experience. 1) Polarized glasses – to enhance the viewing experience lenses that are polarized cut through the reflection of the light on the water allowing for the salmon to be more easily viewed! 2) Come early or late – during the Salute the Park can see up to 10,000 visitors in one day! To avoid the crowds come early in the morning (the Park opens at 8 am) or late (the Park closes at 4 pm) 3) Bring binoculars – to get close and personal with the salmon, bring binoculars to see not only the salmon, but also possible eagle and bear sightings across the river! Note it is not possible to climb in the river to view the salmon as this could disturb their spawning grounds and kill their eggs. 4) Take time to talk to the interpretive guides and read the display signs. To really appreciate the power of the 500km+ journey of sockeye salmon as they return to their birthplace to lay their eggs and die, learn about their vital role to our local ecosystem, economy and culture
can make people truly grateful for this spectacular viewing opportunity. 5) Put on Ryour walking shoes and EVER SE remember your water bottle – the park has over 25 km of trails to get away from the main crowds for a more peaceful viewing experience and to enjoy the beauty of fall in the Shuswap. See you at the Salute!

UBCM 2018 Follow-Up
Submitted by the Village of Chase All Council members and the CAO for the Village of Chase attended the 2018 UBCM Convention which was held in Whistler, BC, Monday, September 10 through the 14, 2018. As was noted in the article run in the September 7, 2018 edition of the Sunflower, UBCM holds an annual convention, and is the opportunity for local government elected officials and CAOs to share information, learn about new initiatives, and hear from the leaders at the Provincial Government level regarding matters relating to local governance and any new funding announcements. During this year's convention, various topics were explored including Cannabis Legalization, Renewable Energy opportunities, and the implementation of codes of conduct. The Small Talk Forum, which is attended by communities with populations under 5,000 includes presentations on matters pertinent to small communities, including success stories such as Chase's Neighbourhood Golf Cart Program, Clearwater's Biomass Energy Project and the Robson Valley Learning and Exploration Centre, spearheaded by the Village of McBride. In addition, the convention provides the opportunity for delegates to hear from the Premier, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and from the leaders of the other parties that sit in the legislature. Resolution sessions are also well attended, as this is where delegates can debate resolutions submitted to UBCM from local governments, and if passed, are submitted to the Provincial Government to request changes to local government legislation, to request funding support for local government programs and services, and to promote improvements in local governance.

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE:
Harvest of Life by Tyler Harper
Having had the blessing of calling Chase home for just over a year now, one thing that I have been utterly amazed at is the vigorous way that plants grow in this region. Having lived in two significant agricultural areas— the Red River Valley and the Fraser Valley— I have been surprised to see just how quick and how bountiful tomatoes and peaches grow in this area. This is a thrill to our family, one of the things that my wife and I have always dreamed of having is a garden to feed our family (at least in some way), and so the pace and breadth of growth here in Chase made things that much more exciting this summer. Since setting up house in town we have spent hours planning and discussing and drawing out what things would look like in the dirt. But the thing about areas that produce lots of garlic and zucchini, is that it is also can produce a lot of weeds, something that we learned first-hand. Because of the business of life and preparing for child number two, our garden went a couple of weeks without any real attention— it got water (in full compliance with Village restrictions) and sunlight, but nothing else really— and when we returned to tend to the garden we found tomato plants that had become bushes, garlic that was ready to be harvested, and weeds. Weeds as tall as my knee. Good soil is good for growing vegetables but it can also grow a lot of weeds. Now that we are solidly in September the garden is emptying out; the garlic has long been dried, the lettuce bolted

weeks ago, cucumber production has stalled and by the time this goes to print, the tomatoes will likely be done in by overnight lows. The bounty has certainly lived up to the reputation of the area. Not all things ‘took’. Pepper plants got crowded out, cauliflower didn’t produce anything but leaves, but we have still been overwhelmed by the food that has come out of this small patch of ground. Baskets and baskets of tomatoes, zucchini the size of child #2, and a solid supply of garlic for months. Harvesting food to eat has become a favourite activity of child #1 and we have had a harvest. Our lives are not unlike these plots of ground. Our living and breathing doesn’t produce fruit like a tomato or vegetables like squash or herbs like garlic, but produce a harvest none the less. What we tend to in our lives shapes what will grow in our lives. How we invest our lives and who we allow to tend our lives dictates whether we will have a harvest of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control or whether we will end up with harvests of hostility, jealous, anger, selfish ambition, dissension and division. Our lives are like a garden that will produce a harvest, the question is what seeds are you planting? And Who is doing the tending? Our lives will produce a sort of fruit, what kind of fruit is in your garden? Tyler (tyler@chasechurch.com) is the Pastor of Chase Evangelical Free Church, 295 Shuswap Ave, Chase, B.C.
Thanks for a great season!
Feel free to call or text with questions or we will see you next season! -Paul

Lions Club News: Annual Halloween Dance A Go submitted by, Chase Lions Club
This year saw a few changes for our club. With the completion of the Splash Pad at Memorial Park, followed by the resignation of Bev Iglesias President/ Secretary and Lorna D ou g l a s Tr e a s u r e r, our club under went s o m e executive changes. The Lion’s club as most people saw, never skipped a beat. We did a float for Canada Day and got FIRST place, as new Lions we were thrilled to receive this. The Lions did all nine weeks of Music on the Lake hosted by the Festival Society. The Lions were then asked by LSIB to cook at their Pow Wow this year, we graciously accepted and it was an exciting event. Next we attended the Nimblefingers Bluegrass festival in Sorrento on Aug 25th . This past weekend one of our members attended the 50th Anniversary celebration at Camp Winfield. Camp Winfield is the Lions Club’s Easter Seal camp for disabled children, where we proudly presented a cheque from our club to them for $1000.00. The Chase Lions are now gearing up for the BIG Salmon run, our concession will be at Tsútswecw Provincial Park (formerly Roderick Haig-Brown Park) from Sept 28- October 21. Come see the big four year run of the Salmon and grab a burger while you’re there.

HOCKEY AND HORSESHOES Horseshoes are simply a form of skill and luck, and that is where the similarity to the Nation’s Number 1 entertainment meet. Like the proverbial hockey gods that are spoken of with reverence, without them you can’t win at shinny, with them you can. There are most likely horseshoe gods out there as well. The two games are also somewhat connected as hockey success requires that horseshoes be located in a special place in the anatomy. And so, having played three games todate, without the assistance of horseshoes, the Heat Organization banished the players to Pillar Lake to get aquainted with horseshoes. After a tie versus the Sicamous EAGLES and a 1-0 loss to the visiting Summerland STEAM this past weekend, the players went camping as a team bonding exercise. Horseshoes played their part, so did lawn darts, bocci, cards, a scavenger hunt, fishing, kayaking and camp grub. It was two nights of getting to know your new teammates and a whole lot of indigestion. With six rookies in one rustic cabin, the baked beans on Sunday night kept their domicile toasty warm. Through the rain and cold the lads experienced a new level of being together, and with the challenges thrown at them, learnt what it takes to be a team, specifically the Chase HEAT. So,
submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat the future will tell the story with the boys having enjoyed fun, comraderie and the odd mishap…just like the game itself. To the past weekend, in the Houseboat Capital of Canada on Friday the 14th, elbows were aimed, sticks were swung and a chippy contest ended in a 2-2 tie… the 1st point of the early season in game 2. In the 1st the EAGLES opened scoring, however the locals popped a pair in the 2nd. Captain Cam Watson got his first of the season firing a heat seeking missile from the point on the man advantage. Rookie Marino Bordin and newly acquired veteran Cody Allen helped make it happen. That was followed by rookie 16 year old Kasey Jackson sniping a twine bulging marker assisted by Moose Jaw’s one and only Garrick Ward, another rookie. Chase up 2-1 after 40 minutes. In the 3rd the EAGLES evened things up, and two periods of overtime didn’t change a thing. Dylan Barton in goal was solid stopping 38 of 40 shots he faced. On Saturday the 15th at home at the Art Holding Memorial Arena, the rivalry between the Okanagan and Shuswap was on display. Both the STEAM and the HEAT joined the KIJHL 9 seasons ago, to make it a 20 team circuit. Never friendly, and complete strangers developed a healthy dislike early and often. If you
enjoy mayhem, it came to a boil in the 2nd with all on the ice but the tenders, engaging in a pile of tussling. One goal in this battle of wills, Summerland popping the single digit in the 1st, after that the goaltenders starred. Geoff Drought like his partner in twine Barton excelled, stopping 22 of 23 he faced. New to the HEAT in completing the Jared Breitkreuz trade is 18 year old forward Wyatt Kelly from Kelowna, his addition brings the roster to 22, with one to three more additions being a possibility. The team has been hampered todate with a lack of billet beds and while the story is getting old, without billet homes it is very difficult to field a team, impacted by ongoing injuries. The HEAT trundle off to the East Kootenays this coming weekend to face the KIJHL 2017-18 League champions the Kimberley DYNAMITERS, followed by the Golden ROCKETS. Next home game is Friday the 28th at 7:00 versus the Spokane BRAVES followed by a Sunday the 30th rematch versus the EAGLES from Sicamous at 2:00 pm. Saturday the 29th the 9th annual HEAT Golf Tournament goes at 2:00 pm at Sunshore Golf Course. See you on the links or at the rink.
Lovely Backdrop for Dinner Meeting The Chase and District Chamber of Commerce had a wonderful turnout at it’s Fall Dinner Meeting on Wednesday evening, which was held at Pete Murray’s Corn Farm.
The picturesque farm was beautifully decorated for the occasion and the weather cooperated for an outdoor dinner. Huge thank you to Pete and Ray Murray for hosting and to everyone who attended. Three local businesses, Treetop Flyers, Parkside Community, and Pete Murray’s Corn Farm, kicked off a new “Success Story Series”, sharing short presentations on their successes and business journeys. Pin Chatter: News from the Bowling Alley Submitted by Calyn Collins, Village Lanes Fun Centre
Now that we have a minute to breathe, we figured we would let you know what has been happening around the lanes! We hope everyone had an excellent Summer! Kelly and I would like to start off by thanking all our amazing customers who are so understanding when we take the Summer off to spend time with our family. In case you haven’t heard yet, we have added a new addition to the Collins Clan! Cooper Collins was born on June 28th and was the missing piece to our family’s puzzle! We are officially into the full swing of things at Village Lanes! We are into our third week of Fall/Winter Leagues, and it is SO great to see everyone again. If you have been thinking of joining a league, and have been putting it off, DON’T! We have space available on Club 55, Night Leagues, and Youth Leagues! It’s never too late to join, and we would love to meet you! All our leagues at Village
Lanes are about fun, and nothing more! We are in the business of HAVING FUN! A couple highlights from the first three weeks of the season! We had a lovely group of ladies head to Cranbrook this past weekend for the BC Senior Games! Patsy McKinnon, Helen Dalin, Wendy Puharich, Tina Smith and Cheryl Hendrickson did a great job representing Chase, and Village Lanes. They placed 5th overall! While the team did great, Wendy did exceptionally well, and won a gold medal for most Pins Over Average in the Games! Way to go Wendy! Bill Pacholok has had yet another excellent start to the bowling season, totalling a 902 triple this past Monday night (for those who aren’t bowlers, that is a 300 average per game!!) Great bowling, Bill. And after having a tough day of
bowling at the Invitational Open trials last Sunday, Ronnie Jules redeemed himself on Tuesday night by bowling a whopping 346 game with 6 strikes in a row! Incredible game Ronnie! If you are looking for something to do next weekend, Village Lanes is hosting their Annual Invitational O p e n Championship where some of the best bowlers from across British Columbia come to compete for $4000.00 cash! It’s great bowling and gets pretty exciting! Feel free to come and check it out! We are so happy to be back into the swing of things! Until next week, Cheers!

Cops for Kids Ride submitted by Doug Everertt, Chase Rotary
The Cops for Kids ride is coming through Chase on Friday September 21st at Noon and arriving at Haldane Elementary for lunch hosted by the Chase Rotary Club. The Club would like to thank our sponsors Haldane Elementary, Subway and Safety Mart Foods for their generous donations. The riders will consume Subway sandwiches, veggies and fruit from Safety Mart and soup from the Rotary Club. Unfortunately, this is an Inservice day for students so, if you are in town at Noon, they will be riding down Shuswap Avenue, drop by the school to say ‘hi’ to these RCMP members who are
raising funds for kids and their families who have medical issues to deal with. The riders are coming in from their morning stop in Salmon Arm and after lunch will bike to Kamloops for the night and dinner. This year there are 38 riders and a support team who help with the logistics of meeting contact organizations, schools and RCMP offices. So far the weather has been OK but should improve as they move forward. Wind is a constant nemesis but consider the uphills, downhills and inconsiderate drivers. The Rotary Club will make a substantial donation to their cause so, if you are free, drop by and say ‘hi’!

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
PROPOSED VILLAGE of CHASE ZONING AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 860-2018 The Village of Chase Council will be holding a Public Hearing pursuant to Section 464 of the Local Government Act, to consider amendments to the Village of Chase Zoning Bylaw No. 683 consisting of inserting new definitions regarding recreational cannabis: That Section 2.1, Definitions, be amended with the following: “CANNABIS means a substance included in Schedule II of the Controlled Drug and Substances Act of Canada, 1996 chapter 19, as amended from time to time. CANNABIS RETAIL means business premises where the principal business is the retail sale of cannabis for consumption off site. Cannabis retail premises are licensed under the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act (BC). LIQUOR means a substance containing ethyl alcohol as defined in the Liquor Control and Licensing Act of BC LIQUOR RETAIL means business premises where the principal business is the retail sale of liquor, wine, beer, and other such alcoholic beverages for consumption off site. Liquor retail premises are licensed under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act of BC. That the Village of Chase Zoning Bylaw No. 683-2006 be amended by adding “Cannabis Retail” as a permitted use in “C-2, Downtown Commercial”. The Council will consider amending the zoning bylaw to include these new or amended definitions. What is the Zoning Amendment about? If adopted, Amendment Bylaw No. 860-2018 would amend existing zoning regulations to allow for "Cannabis Retail" sales in the Village’s central business district zoned C-2, Downtown. This amendment establishes zoning (use of land) on all downtown properties to allow standalone cannabis retail stores to locate. The proposed bylaw amendments would also include new or revised definitions and amendments to the general regulations section to reflect the upcoming legalization of cannabis. If you feel your property interests may be affected by the proposed amendment and you wish to address Village Council on any matters pertaining to this bylaw, please attend the Public Hearing at the Village Office on:

New paramedic positions announced for Kamloops and Chase Chase will be getting three full-time paramedics to provide regular staffing seven days a week, the province’s health ministry announced on Tuesday. Kamloops will be adding eighteen full-time paramedic positions. The increased resources are part of an ongoing commitment by the Ministry of Health, the Provincial Health Services Authority and BCEHS to increase the number of permanent paramedic positions and improve ambulance services in urban, rural and remote areas of B.C. “We are committed to improving health care in all regions of BC,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix. “By increasing the fulltime paramedic positions in Kamloops and Chase and adding additional ambulances, we are strengthening the emergency services the community depends on, ensuring paramedics will be there when people need them.” As part of the BCEHS Action Plan, the Kamloops area was identified as being a priority in the ongoing review of where services are most needed to improve patient care. Paramedics and the communities they serve benefit from additional full-time jobs with regularly scheduled hours, consistent pay and benefits. The new paramedic positions will be awarded based on the hiring standards in the CUPE 873 Collective Agreement with BCEHS. Burton Tree Service operates throughout the North Okanagan and Shuswap, offering commercial and residential arborist services. Full liability & WCB insurance.
