Positively Seen in Chase This Week Submitted by Chase and District Chamber of Commerce

As the summer holiday season now draws to a close, we pause to think back on all the things we have enjoyed over the past two months. Our sunny skies and long spells of exceptional heat have provided us with many benefits. We have had the opportunity to make new friends and new discoveries as we spent time together enjoying all the natural beauties of the Shuswap. We also have been able to savour the bounties of our gardens and local farms as produce ripened earlier than usual. Kudos go out to all those hobby gardeners who willingly shared an abundance of cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, beans, corn and a variety of fruits with those less fortunate. Thanks too, to the area farmers who bring their excellent quality, fresh produce to the farmers’ market, produce stands and local grocery stores so that we can all access it easily. We also wish to thank all those local businesses and

local government which have employed students over the summer months. These students will now return to school with the benefit of a wider range of experiences which they can apply to their studies and take with them into their adult lives. Also, the after school and summer jobs offered locally make it possible for more of our youth to pursue higher education and career paths beyond those available here. As students return to school, please remember to observe the speed limits in school zones and be always mindful of the safety of children on foot and on bikes. Parents please remind your children to walk facing traffic when no sidewalks are available, and to cross streets only at corners or at marked crosswalks. We all want to keep everyone safe throughout this school year. Have a safe and enjoyable Labour Day weekend everyone!

BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

A family of characters live in a drafty castle in England, separated from their village neighbours by status and education, but not by money. The castle is more ruins than romantic and lacks the essentials that anyone would expect to find in mid- 20th century England, but narrator Cassandra finds comfort and entertainment in capturing her eccentric family’s existence in her journals.

Her father is a writer facing ‘challenges’ and in a series of hilarious and possibly misguided efforts the family tries to reconnect him with his inspiration to help pull them out of the poverty that has created their circumstances; living with medieval infrastructure in the 1930s. Foreigners come into the story and love and logic get mixed up in what is one of my favorite coming - of - age novels.

Do you know how high the probate fee will be? Should you jointly-own your home to avoid probate? What are the dangers of that strategy? What struggles aggravate executors the most? What simple steps can you take now to avoid them? Will your executor have to deal with capital gains taxes? Is it more difficult for family if the cremation or burial wasn’t preplanned?

Regarding: sewer charges based on water consumption in the summer I too have lived in a town with metered water, and found that my bill increased by only about $7 to $15 per month in the summer months due to irrigation. I checked with that towns utility rates to see how they charged for sewer, and they based it on water consumption averaged out from October to April, which makes more sense. I looked at the comparison bill the Village sent out. For the months of January to April, it is $30 higher than the current way of billing. During the summer months when water usage is higher, having the sewer bill piggyback water consumption will escalate my bill considerably. The Village has stated that the change in billing will not increase overall revenues for water and sewer, just redistribute charges based on useage. I am a very conservative user, so beg to differ. I know they have kinks to work out and your input is very important. Please air your concerns to the Village before Sept. 18th. Sandra Miller

Gratitude for Zumba & Maria I just want to share my gratitude for the amazing Maria, who many will know from her work at People’s Pharmacy. Some will also know that she is a Volunteer Firefighter and fewer still will know that she offers amazing Zumba Classes at the Fire Hall. I have been fortunate to take part in these classes, where we have WAY more fun then you would think possible at 7am. She does a great job, keeping us laughing and wiggling, so that we hardly notice how much we are sweating and all the proceeds from her classes go to support our Volunteer Fire Department. Such generosity should be recognised. Thank-you, Maria. Your kindness and enthusiasm makes our Community a better place! Sincerely, Ms. Joey Nash

TEN questions With....

Kris Doerksen is up this week as we question our way through the members of the Chase Volunteer Fire Department. Q • Where are you from? A • My husband and I moved here from a small northern town Taylor, BC up near Fort St. John after he got a job transfer to Kamloops. Q • How long have you been on the department, and how’d you get involved? A • I’ve been on this department since December of last year but was on another fire department since January of ‘08. I’ve always had an interest in being a firefighter since I was a young girl. I got involved with the fire services because I wanted to help people and make a positive contribution to the community. Q • What do you like about being on the Volunteer Fire Department? A • I love the camaraderie and family aspect, you don’t see that at too many other jobs. I also love getting the kids involved and excited about fire safety. By the way, it’s s Fire Prevention Week October 4-10. This year’s theme is: “Hear the beep where you sleep. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.” Q • Where can you usually be found? A • Working at People’s Food and Drug, at the firehall or outdoors with my hubby and puppy, Pyro. I also volunteer with St. John Ambulance First Aid. Q • Can you share a nice thing somebody

did for you recently? A • Well... Not me really, but my husband went to pay for our groceries the other day and his bank card wasn’t working. By the time he went to the truck to get cash and come back, a nice Chase community member had already paid for the groceries. We’re both thankful to whoever that was and we’ve paid it forward. Q • Have you seen any good movies this summer? A • Trainwreck and Vacation. Both were hilarious! I was literally laughing out loud Q • What do you do for fun? A • Baking and anything outdoorsy. Camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, baseball, soccer, etc. Q • Do you have any pet peeves? A • Inefficiency, dishonesty and gossiping are my pet peeves. Q • What’s on your “bucket list”? A • Travel the world, hike Machu Picchu in Peru, get a pilots license and I want to watch my beloved Boston Red Sox play at Fenway Park before it shuts down. Q • Are you looking forward to winter or could summer keep going for you? A • I would love it if Autumn was all year round. Q • Who should be next? A • Firefighter Kevin Bannister.

Churchill’s Corner by Wally Churchill

It is a privilege and a pleasure to have this column in the Sunflower. I am concerned about the apathy of so many people that don’t seem to know the dangers of big corporations, taking over our country, Some people think ‘I can’t do anything about it.’ The danger is paramount. If something is not done now, it could be too late.

Mining companies are ravaging our watersheds. Everyone knows that we need clean fresh water. The damage that is done cannot be undone. The fish ingest the poisons, the effects take a while. People have been concerned about mercury in fish for years. We depend on the fish. Eagles, all wild animals are affected. When our water

is damaged, every living creature is affected. Many people my age are passing, and all the knowledge is gone with them. I am just one Elder that is trying to help. You will be hearing my music, and my words, I will not be Quelled.
