Funding to benefit health programs in Shuswap
ommunity-based health programs in the Shuswap region have received added support thanks to funding recently provided by Interior Health to local health societies in Sorrento and Scotch Creek. Interior Health has provided $120,000 to the Sorrento and Area Community Health Centre Society and $60,000 to the North Shuswap Health Centre Society to help the societies support the operations of health centres in each community over the next three years. These health centres are operated by the societies and are a place at which residents can access services, including those of nurse practitioners. “The Sorrento and Area Community Health Centre Society is delighted to receive this funding from the Province through Interior Health. This will enable us to continue offering primary health care to

the residents in our region and allow us to concentrate on expanding and improving our services. The Health Centre has become a part of the fabric of the Sorrento region and the entire community will celebrate this news.” said Marilyn Clark, President, Sorrento and Area Community Health Centre Society The Sorrento Community Health Centre is home to a full-time nurse practitioner, who provides primary care services to residents in the region. The nurse practitioner has been serving the community since 2013, after the successful application of Interior Health and the Sorrento and Area Community Health Centre Society under the Province’s Nurse Practitioners for B.C. program. Interior Health also offers home health, public health and mental health and substance use services as outreach from Salmon Arm. ...Continued on page 8

seating area; to Big O Tire for their great looking new building; to Sunshore Golf for its lovely gardens and meticulously maintained course; and to the Chase Lion’s Club for working hard to spruce up their campground for our visitors. Let’s all continue to challenge our neighbouring businesses to join the beautification movement! Our very special thanks go to the gentleman who was picking up garbage along Shuswap Avenue as he enjoyed his morning walk. Special thanks, too, to the many responsible dog owners who faithfully “scoop the poop” leaving our grassy areas free of unwanted surprises. Let’s all try to encourage each other to reduce littering by using the garbage cans which are conveniently located throughout town, and by making the effort to pick up stray bits of garbage as we walk rather than stepping over it. Keep up the good work and watch for more special recognitions each week. Well done everyone!

Naturalist News: Club needs fresh blood
Our last outing in May to the pond in Blind Bay proved to be a nice day. On it we saw only one Painted Turtle, lots of Redwing Blackbirds, one Coot, a Mallard hen with eight chicks and five of those wonderful Ruddy Ducks with the blue beaks. Back here in Chase, there is a family of Great Horned Owls with three fluffy owlets and one older chick who is just about as large as the parents. There are six huge nests and several smaller one, probably in some state of building. We are lucky to have them so close that we can just go outside and see them from our property. Jack was driving on the Turtle Valley Road last month when two yearling Moose came out and ran in
front of the truck for quite a ways before going back into the bush – its good to see that they are still around. Our outing this month will be on Tuesday June 9th at Joanne Groves in Celista at 1:30 PM. It should be interesting as Janice is preparing a surprise outing. I have met so many people who say, ‘Yes, I should join the Naturalists’, but they haven’t shown up and our membership is getting pretty low. Unless we have new blood, we are in danger of not being able to keep the club going – so if you are interested, please, come out! You can call me at 250-679-8148 and I will pick you up if you need a ride. Hope to hear from you! - Claudette Carlsen

The Day the Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchanan
The falls in this story are the Niagara falls, where the Canadian and American borders meet and where, at the turn of the century, industry was booming because of the electricity made available through power corporations. This novel includes historical perspectives on life in Niagara, but the central plot is one of love and family and belonging. Against that main plot there are set conflicts
that arise between the sometimes controversial ‘progress’ of man, and preexisting patterns in nature. There are other conflicts presented to the reader as well, including between industry and the common person. Overall an interesting novel, I found this to be a quick read and a great break from life, not too much to think about, but enough to keep you guessing.

Dinosaur Poop at the Chase Museum It was my first week as the summer student at Chase Museum, and I was thrilled to learn about the history of Chase and other artifacts. Little did I know just how many mind blowing things are donated to us. One sunny day, I came in to the museum and our lovely curator, Diana, put me straight to work. She pointed to a bunch of boxes and told me someone had donated a large collection of rocks. I was to go through them and pick out the most interesting. There were sparkly rocks a plenty, in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and in a variety of different colours. There were even a handful of fossils, which happen to be my favourite. Unfortunately there were no sabretooth tiger bones or an extinct species of fish, but there were leaves and an old seashell. I put them out on their shelf and labelled them. A few days later the rock show came to town, and a few of the rock-hounders came to take a look. One man picked up one peculiar rock I’d come across a few days prior that I’d not really paid much attention to, since it had “Dinosaur Dung” written on it. Above it, the word “Coprolite”. He explained to me about how it was dino-
by Chelsea Zirk saur poop, and how it should be on the shelf with the other fossils. This spiked my curiosity, since I didn’t believe at all that it was actually real dino poop. In the billions of years that the earth has been around, there have been hundreds of different species roaming its surface. If that’s the case, then shouldn’t we be up to our foreheads in old poop? So I did some research. “How long does it take for poop to fossilize?” I googled. I found an article entitled “Coprolites: A Few Words on Prehistoric Turds”. Apparently, coprolites are commonly found throughout the world. The organic matter in fossilized poop has been mineralized, which makes them hard and odorless (Thank you, science). That being said, they can still tell us a lot about the (probably extinct) creature who... Err, made it. Some of the coprolites that had been found had worm markings in them, which told scientists that the animal may have had parasites. Other coprolites, CALL like old mammoth poop, still had chunks of hair left in them.

Yummy. Most of the fossils are exactly as they were left millions of years ago. Sometimes, although rarely, poop can fossilize in just a few hundred years. Which had me wondering still if what was in our box of rocks was actually dinosaur poop. I remained unconvinced. And then I saw it - “...sometimes what looks like a coprolite could just be a [well-deformed] rock”. These are called psuedocoprolites, and the only way to know the difference between a real coprolite and a pseudo is to do scientific chemical tests. A real coprolite fossil will have a higher calcium content, because of the extra bones they’d been ingesting daily. I suppose we will never truly know for sure if what we found in that old box was a true dinosaur poop. However, for the sake of being a historian for the summer, I will choose to believe that the Chase Museum does, in fact, have an old piece of fossilized dinosaur poop. It is on display, I will leave it up to you to come take a look at it and judge for yourself. Another fun fact: Some people polish and sell coprolites in jewelry which can sell for as much as $12,000... I think I’ll like it here. Something tells me this job will never get boring.
Funding for Sorrento

There are nurse practitioner services one day, twice per month, at the North Shuswap Health Centre in Scotch Creek, provided as an outreach service from the nearby Chase Health Centre. Interior Health also offers home health, public health and mental health and substance use services as outreach from Chase and Kamloops to the region’s residents. Nurse practitioners play a key role in the delivery of quality patient care throughout British Columbia. They are registered nurses with master’s degrees whose advanced education, training and skills enable them to assess, diagnose, consult,
order diagnostic tests, prescribe, refer to specialists and assist patients in better managing their chronic health conditions. They work independently and as part of a health care team to help deliver high-quality health care services. “Like many rural communities, we are challenged by the physician shortage. This funding will help us support the nurse practitioner and other health care professionals as we continue with our primary goal of recruiting a full-time physician to the North Shuswap,” said Jay Simpson, CoChair, North Shuswap Health Centre Society.
