Museum News The Chase and District Museum’s exhibit, which is sports themed this summer, is up and ready to enjoy. “We have sought to highlight the strong history of organized sport in the Shuswap. Many of our archived photos shows that both baseball and hockey were the mainstays of the local sports culture. With teams of both First Nations and European decent enjoying teams that were of mixed race,” said Diana Ball, manager and curator of the museum. The museum has a lot of activities on the go. They are offering “Pioneer” photos taken at the museum in front of our very popular historical UNDERWOOD BAR. “We have kept the prices very reasonable at only $25 per 8x10 print. What a fun thing to do with your company and it makes such a fun souvenir for your guests to remember their visit to Chase,” said Ball. They do need to have the photo sessions pre-booked in order to have enough staff on during the session. Guided hiking tours to Bear Creek trail, are available any day that suits but again must be pre booked through the Museum. Enjoy a + 2.5 hour guided hike interpreted by Ted Kay. Ted shares his wealth

of knowledge about the local flora and fauna, geography as well as the history of the Bear Creek flumes. Ted is using archive photos of the Flume when it was in use and will lead you to the exact site that the photo was taken. The hike is intermediate and cost is $15 per person or $40 for a family of 4. ALL PROCEEDS ARE SUPPORTING YOUR MUSEUM. Also on this summer is our offering of 3 creative one day classes. Lead by the talented Ginny Barkman. Introduction to Ukrainian Egg Decorating. This beginners class allows you to give it a try and in one class you will have created your own beautiful decorated egg. No special talents are required. Introduction to Silk Painting using Batik and other methods. During this class you will complete 3 different silk panels exploring different techniques. “I guarantee that you will be pleased with your results and probably surprised at what nice things you can create.” said Ball. And the 3rd class is an introduction into miniature water colours. During this one day class you will complete 8 miniature water colours each using different techniques. Such as wet/dry brush applications and more. No skills or talents are required! C o n t a c t the Museum FMI about these classes. Phone 250-6798847.

Let’s all have a safe summer on the roads in Chase

Serving Pritchard, Chase & surrounding area

Summer is definitely with us once again! As more and more of us are outside enjoying the sun, we need to remember to take extra precautions when driving, riding or walking in Chase now that our streets are extra busy. The Chase COP Speed Watch wishes to thank the many motorists who drive within the posted speed limits and who show courtesy to pedestrians waiting to cross the streets at designated crosswalks. Unfortunately, data gathered during recent Speed Watches indicated a significant increase in the percentage of drivers who are choosing to ignore the reduced speed limits in school and playground zones. Please remember that the 30 km/hr. posted speed in playgrounds is in effect from dawn to dusk daily, and in school zones the 30 km/hr. posted speed is in effect from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on school days. We also wish to recognize all those cyclists who wear approved bicycle helmets and who ride single file on the right hand side of the road. We strongly encourage all cyclists to follow these simple safety precautions and ride in accordance with BC

law. Also, we would like to remind children and adults alike that it is mandatory for bicycles to be equipped with a front mounted white light, a rear reflector and a rear mounted red light when riding during the hours from ½ hour before sunset to ½ hour before sunrise. Let’s make it a priority to encourage all cyclists in Chase to wear helmets, ride with respect for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and to ensure that they are visible when riding at night. Pedestrians are reminded to use the crosswalks provided when crossing streets, especially when walking with children. When no crosswalk is available within a reasonable distance (1 block), please go to the nearest intersection rather than darting out into traffic from between parked cars. Drivers are asked to watch carefully at crosswalks and intersections, and to yield right-of-way to pedestrians. If we all follow these simple suggestions and show respect to all others using our streets we can all enjoy a safer, happier summer season. Approved by Corporal Scott Linklater Chase RCMP

National Aboriginal Day - 20th Anniversary by Iva Jules of each and every piece his late mother Dr. Mary Thomas or his grandmother proudly made mostly by hand. People had the opportunity of experiencing the making of their own flint arrowhead. Elder Sadie Phelps who shared her knowledge of beading and from Salmon Arm, the Early Childhood Development Center on site with books to give away, painting and chalk drawings. There was face painting and ice shave cones very tasty, kids loved it by Jill and Leanne. The young girls from Chief Atham School entertained us with the “Berry picking dance” along with instructor Janice Billy and Charmayne Jules. Bailey Thomas from Neskonlith performed a woman’s traditional and woman’s jingle dance. The kids had fun on the bouncy house for hours on end. Can not forget about the free hamburgers and hot dogs and most importantly the free bannock. To end the wonderful amazing day was live music from the Skinz Band local guys from our area.

Thank you to everyone that came out to Memorial Park on Tuesday June 21, to help celebrate National Aboriginal Day. National Aboriginal Day is a great opportunity for the Secwepemc people to show and tell stories about the Secwepemc traditions. The day started with an opening prayer from Councillor Ronnie Jules then a welcoming speech from Chief Robin Billy followed by the welcoming song by the hand drummers and singers. Sage Hills from Tek’emlups to Secwepemc entertained with drumming and singing and explaining the differences between the types of dancers and their regalia’s from the mens traditional, grass dance, jingle dress, fancy dance, woman’s traditional. These performances were so beautiful to experience as you saw in each of the regalia’s how many hours goes into making a regalia and how different each one is. Gerry Thomas displayed his late mother’s extensive collection, Gerry did an awesome job telling the stories

One year ago, the Chase Lions took on a project to bring a “Splash Park” to Chase for the enjoyment of young and old. The club is now turning to the young families of Chase in support of this project. Several events are being planned, with full proceeds to the Splash Park. We are in need of VOLUNTEERS. Lions Concession will be open each Monday evening from 4:00 - 8:00 pm, through July and August at the Chase Lions RV Park on Mill Road. Canada Pancake Breakfast, Friday, July 1, 2016 Volunteers are needed to help set up, cook, clean and serve the patrons: Hours are from 5:00 am - noon (cleanup) Canada Day - Concession

at Memorial Park from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm Volunteers are needed all day to cook in the concession and cleanup after the event. The Splash Park is a huge endeavour for a small community, but with the help of many hands....we can make it happen. Upon completion of these 3 events, the Lions Club will review the volunteer and financial support and a decision will be made as to carry on with the Splash Park. If you would like to volunteer for any of these three events, please call Beverley Iglesias 250-371-7136 or Lorna Douglas 250-819-9736. A schedule will be available. Thank you Chase.

Kindergarten Fair

Families were able to learn about the importance of vaccinations before school, as well as other useful information. With tables filled both upstairs and down, and ambulance as well as fire trucks parked for tours out back, the little ones were able to wander about and explore until they worked up an appetite. At that time, it was time to eat, with an eating area set up and pizza provided, the event organizers thought of everything. The event ran from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and seen a consistent flow of the future kindergarten-crew throughout that time. As elementary and high school students prepare for their summer vacation, one group of excited Chase kids are already

counting down the days until September.
