HANG UP ON SCAMMERS by Kelsey Snelgrove

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is noting an increase in telephone scams where the caller claims to be from the CRA but is not, and is asking Canadians to beware—these calls are fraudulent and could result in identity and financial theft. Local resident, Laura Gebbinck for one, found herself on the phone last week with someone claiming to be an officer with the CRA. “He said there are multiple charges against me for fraudulent taxes from 2009 - 2014....they say they have an affidavit and that I have warrants for my arrest if I don’t pay my taxes out of court. He said if I didn’t pay now, within 72 hours a police officer will be at my door to arrest me,” said Gebbinck. “They sound very authentic until the end of the call when they told me to buy an I-tunes card, for I knew the CRA would not be asking me to do that,” she said. The CRA has been warning of scams involve threatening taxpayers or using aggressive and forceful language to scare them into paying fictitious debt to the CRA. Victims receive a phone call from a person claiming to work for the CRA and saying that taxes are owed. The caller requests immediate payment by credit

WANTED:

GOOD BILLETS FOR HOMELESS BOYS

The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2016-2017 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2016-March 2017). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours of exciting hockey. Being a billet family is a rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/boys into your home and provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please contact Janice Winfield 250-679-4471 or Lana Adamson 250574-3681

WASHROOM NANAIMO MOUNTIE DONAIR PABLUM

You know you are Canadian when:

You know how to pronounce and spell Saskatchewan without blinking You put on shorts as soon as it hits plus 10, even if there is still snow around You are excited whenever an American television show mentions Canada

You are in grade 12, not the 12th grade. You have Canadian Tire money in your kitchen drawers Pike is a type of fish, not some part of a highway You drive on a highway, not a freeway

ROBERTSON FREEZIES GIVE’R

CANADIAITNI GRAFF

You know what a Robertson screwdriver is You understand the sentence, “Could you please pass me a serviette, I just spilled my poutine.” Someone in a Home Depot offers you assistance... and they don’t work there

You measure distance in hours You eat chocolate bars, not candy bars. You’re not offended by the term “HOMO MILK”. If you’ve had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number

WEEK ONE - SEAL SKULL HAMMER Opening Act – Tanner Dawson

submitted by Music on the Lake Committee Seal Skull Hammer is a Canadian band that was born high in the majestic mountains of the sunny Shuswap in beautiful British Columbia. Sprung from once a week summer jam sessions, these three melodious mountain musicians have joined forces, moving off Alton Gowen’s front porch and onto the stage, as the super jug band Seal Skull Hammer. These three do it yourselves of the doctrinal ditty are named for the idea of using archaic tools to build what t h e y need, t h e n prides itself o n having the lowest-tech gear possible to make their music, giving up doctored sound effects and synthesizers for home-made instruments and hillbilly harmonies. These three chaps in snaps then started playing numerous shows on the coffee house circuit receiving rave reviews. The band moved on the playing the Routes and Blues twice, the Sicamous Mushroom Fest, the Salmon Arm Fall Fair, the busker stage at the Roots and Blues, a complete concert and interview on the local radio station 93.7 Voice Of The

Shuswap, and finally the release of their first album; “Better Together” consisting of ten original songs written by Seal Skull Hammer for their now loyal and growing fan-base. These moonshine merry men, Darrin Herting, Alton Gowen and John Fleming, put on a grand ol show with lots of banter, not just playing mountain music but embodying it with accents, expressions and entertaining antics. These hillbillies of hilarity aim to bring music back to a simpler time; a time when people talked face to face, danced with each other, and valued a sense of community. Yes, it’s back to the basics for these purveyors of the primitive who are fed up with the sounds of much of today’s “over-produced” music with the common belief that what music should produce is a sense of happiness, togetherness, and contentment, not the opposite. They hope to entertain you, laugh with you, and send you home feeling better than when you arrived. So put away your toil, ease our mortal coil, put your woes and worries in the slammer and listen to some Seal Skull Hammer.
