big crowd turned up to the first installment of the Music on the Lake Summer Music Series and were treated to some nice weather to go along with the lovely live music. Over 200 people showed up to the free concert in Memorial Park on Tuesday, to hear the opening act, Chase’s country singer Tanner Dawson, and the main event, Seal Skull Hammer, a jug/folk band from Salmon Arm. “We are very pleased with the community support and we are very excited for the next 8 weeks! We were worried the weather may be a factor but the rain held off and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect!” said Ali Maki, Chair of the Music on the Lake Committee. “I’d like to thank our business sponsors

and volunteers for making this music series possible, without the generosity and support of the community this event could not take place and with the turnout Tuesday night I’m hopeful we’ll be enjoying “Music on the Lake” for many years to come!” said Maki.

Just as the music was starting, two large traditional Secwepemc canoes filled people arrived from a journey on the water starting at the Quaaout Lodge. Quaaout is offering these canoe trips for $25 per person on Tuesdays as a tie in with Music on the Lake. Contact Frank Antoine at Quaaout to book one of the canoe rides this summer! See page 12 for the next musician bio and don’t forget the music will be happening every Tuesday of July and August.

WANTED:

GOOD BILLETS FOR BOYS The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2016-2017 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2016-March 2017). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours of exciting hockey.

Being a billet family is a rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/boys into your home and provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please contact Janice Winfield 250679-4471 or Lana Adamson 250-574-3681

3 Way Stop Irks Drivers and Neighbours by Kelsey Snelgrove

Two weeks ago a three way stop was added at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Pine Street by the Village of Chase, in an effort to deter speeding, but many say the stop signs are causing a bigger problem. “Since the stop sign was put in I have seen shocking displays of dangerous driving,” said Rosemary Derkson, whose house is at the intersection. Derkson had been keeping track of the traffic activity. On June 27th, a few days after the sign was put in, she recorded 60 cars in a 10 minute period. Only 2 vehicles came to a complete stop, 31 made rolling stops and 27 went straight through without slowing down. She noted that many of them even sped up to go through. Other neighbours confirm this has been typical over the last couple weeks, and

Derkson is not alone in her concern and frustration. Norman Massicotte and several other neighbours spoke of their concerns at the last meeting of Council, on June 21st. “I have a 4 year old daughter and when I back out of my driveway into an intersection where 8/10 people blast through, I am extremely worried,” said Massicotte. In addition to the concern of collisions, residents complain of noise pollution from cars stopping and starting at all hours of the night as well as blatant displays of aggression from drivers angry at the stop signs. Derkson presented guidelines suggested by the Province of BC Ministry of Transportation and Highway’s manual of standard traffic signs, which say that stop signs “should not be used as speed control

I have the misfortune of living at the site of one of these unwarranted stop signs. According to every guideline I can find regarding stop signs in Canada, (or North America for that matter), there are requirements or ‘warrants’ for the placing of a stop sign. The Pine St signs meet none of the warrants. There are many reports that indicate, unanimously, that drivers get frustrated by having to stop needlessly. Their reaction is usually to accelerate aggressively and actually attain a higher peak speed once they get away from the sign, (in order to ‘gain’ back the time spent slowing down needlessly). Consequently there is much more noise. Because of the non-compliance of stopping for an unwarranted sign, there is an element of uncertainty as to what other drivers are going to do. Are they going to stop? Are they going to blast through? Glenn Derksen

The Pine Street Speedway problem has not been solved with the installation of a Stop Sign. We live on Hysop Road and in place of the swoosh of cars heading over the Pine Street Bridge we now get to listen to cars screeching to a stop, over reving engines taking off from the Stop Sign, gearing down of commercial trucks and the occasional cursing of impatient drivers. Cars drive through the Stop Sign regularly, driveways are blocked if two or more cars are lined up to go and homeowners are losing sleep. Since when does a Stop Sign slow traffic down? Let’s remove the Stop Sign Village of Chase leaders and go back to the discussion table. Terry and Shareen Braybrook

device or a primary tool for traffic calming measures”. It was not clear whether these regulations apply to municipalities like the Village of Chase, or only Highways, but the Village has no traffic laws of its own to turn to for guidance. At the meeting, Derksen also presented a petition with over 200 signatures requesting to the have the stop signs removed immediately. Acting mayor Ali Maki reiterated that the stop sign was only meant to be temporary until a better solution could be implemented. Village of Chase Administration will be bringing a short report forward about whether or not the Highway rules apply to a municipality at the next meeting of Council on July 12 meeting.

The newly installed stop signs at 5th Avenue and Pine Street are completely unwarranted. We would rather put up with the 20% of people who used to speed, compared to the 70% of people who fail to come to a complete stop. My husband and I have had three near misses from being T-boned in the past 2 days, as we turn right from 5th Avenue while people coming down from the bridge fail to stop. The statistics being noted by the Bylaw Officer are definitely skewed at best. People CAN see you and your running vehicle in front of our house and therefore, attempt to at least do a rolling stop. Come and sit on our neighbors porch or up on our deck for a hour and your results will be far more accurate. Tonight alone we witnessed 7 vehicles within 2 hours go straight through toward town at a speed of 50km or more. Who is going to be liable for an accident at a unwarranted stop sign? These signs need to be removed, temporary or not, they are an accident waiting to happen! Steve & Samantha McMullen

Dreaming big – the Seymour Arm Fruit Lands by Jim Cooperman

Seymour Arm holds the unique distinction of being the only community in the Shuswap and perhaps the entire province that became a ghost town twice. While its gold rush era history, when it went from boom to bust in less than a year, is legendary its reincarnation as a fruit growing centre is less well known. In 1908, Seymour Arm Fruit Lands Limited was established with its head office in Vancouver after purchasing 6,500 acres. The company began a marketing program to sell 5-acre lots to potential settlers primarily coming from England. A 30-page advertising brochure was published in 1910 that glorified the potential of the area for growing fruit without the need for irrigation. Claims from agricultural experts were presented about the quality of the sandy loam soil and mildness of the weather in the valley protected by the surrounding mountains. And perhaps the most outrageous claim in the brochure was that the lake “never freezes over.” Another preposterous claim was the ease of transportation, thanks to the Shuswap Lake steamers that provided a key link to Sicamous and the railway. In addition to the claims of generous profits from growing fruit on small acreages, the brochure explained how

more crops could be cultivated in the spaces between the fruit trees. The list of potential fruits that could be grown included, apples, pears, plums and cherries. Opportunities for sports, including boating, fishing, swimming, climbing and hunting were also touted. The brochure includes numerous photos that show a burnt over landscape, a hotel (still standing), school and homes under construction. Prices varied from $125 an acre for bench land and $100 an acre for bottom land, “suitable for celery.” In addition, the company offered to clear the land for $50 an acre. Prospective buyers were led to believe that the agricultural potential of Seymour Arm was equivalent to Salmon Arm and that it was “even more protected from climatic extremes.” An added bonus for Seymour Arm was the potential for a “mining revival” thanks to the large showing of silver lead ore in the nearby Cottonbelt Range. The promises did not end with just the prospects of financial success from fruit farming. Plans included a large town site, with a water system from the Seymour River. As well, the company had plans to provide electricity using hydroelectric power from a dam at Seymour River Falls. The Fruit Lands Company also advertised employment opportunities, such as building, fencing and land clearing. Continued on page 9...

Old Brochure Sells Seymour Arm

Within one year, Seymour Arm had a population of over 200, making it the largest community on the lake after Salmon Arm. In 1915, the first fall fair was held on the town wharf in front of the hotel. The displays included produce, flowers, fruits, crafts and baking and besides the entrees from Seymour, they also came from Albas, Sorrento and Anglemont. Reality began to strike between 1914 and 1916, when many settlers left to fight in World War I, leaving their families behind to suffer financial ruin. Adding to the calamities, in 1916 a severe frost hit killing most of the fruit trees. As a result, the Fruit Lands Company, which was some $400,000 in debt, declared

bankruptcy. Most of the settlers were forced to leave and most of the land reverted to the crown for lack of tax payments. A few settlers remained and found work in the forest industry. The hotel closed in 1925 and the one family, the Collings, that still managed to operate a small fruit cannery had to quit when the cost of transportation and labour become too expensive. The supply of goods during the winter to the remaining few pioneers ended when icebreaker, the Maude Annis was condemned. By 1940, Seymour Arm was nearly deserted once again. Word Search - Nikola Tesla

SERBIAN AMERICAN INVENTOR EIDETIC ENGINEER FUTURIST POLYGLOT

PHYSICIST ALTERNATING CURRENT ELECTRICITY XRAYS RADIO LIGHT

WIRELESS ROBOTICS LASER MOTOR RIVALRY EDISON FREQUENCY

WARDENCLYFFE FREE ENERGY REMOTE AC RADAR GENIUS I have a phobia of overengineered buildings - its a complex complex complex. I was hanging out with this girl and she said, “I can’t be with you, you’re too pedantic.” And I said, “Define pedantic.”

My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met. Wifi went down during family dinner tonight. One kid started talking and I didn’t know who he was. I’ve been repeating the same mistakes in life for

so long now, I think I’ll start calling them traditions. A clean house is the sign of a broken computer. Did you hear about the ATM that got addicted to money? It suffered from withdrawals.

Did you hear about the smug inmate who climbed down the prison wall? He was a condescending con descending. When my friend told me to stop acting like a flamingo I had to put my foot down. If I had to describe myself in one word, it would be “bad at following directions.”

Nikola Tesla, who would be 160 years old on July 10th, was the fascinating genius who invented the theories of electricity we use today. Tesla worked for Edison for many years until a bitter rivalry formed. Edison believed that DC (Direct Current) was the power of the future. Tesla had been working on the AC (Alternating Current) power we have today. Edison and many others took Tesla’s ideas and exploited them to the things we have today for there own profit and took the credit themselves. We know now know this man was exploited and was not given credit where credit is due. Many Electrical Engineers still study Tesla’s notes in order to find an idea that can be exploited and elaborated today. Tesla, who was born in a small village in Croatia had an eidetic or photographic m e m o r y , and spoke 8 languages. The Tesla story is a fascinating one, worth looking into more! Wardenclyffe Tower (1901–1917), also known as the Tesla Tower, was an early wireless transmission station designed and built by Nikola Tesla in Shoreham, New York in 1901-1902.
