NAAAW Week in Chase & Area by Kelsey Snelgrove

A variety of events and activities happened last week throughout this area (Secwepemculecw) as part of Native Aboriginal Addictions Awareness Week. The week historically was funded with government grants, but the current incarnation of the Addictions Awareness week has been made possible by the cooperation of four separate communities working together: Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band, Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, and the Village of Chase. “The purpose is to bring awareness and education to youth in the area about addictions”, said Jeromy Biron, who works as an Addictions Counsellor in the area.

“I’d like to eventually work myself out of a job,” joked Biron, who helped make NAAAW possible. As part of the week there was a health fair at the high school, a presentation on gang awareness, a rattle making session, special AA meetings, several meals at the Chase Community Hall, storytelling, Lahal games, and a tie in with the Chase Heat game. Biron said the events were well received and well attended by the community. “110 people out to make rattles at the Community Hall, and people had a lot of fun. 84 rattles were made,” said Biron. One of the highlights was a Bear Dance performed at the Closing Ceremony on Saturday.

Pin Chatter: News from the Bowling Alley by Cayln Buresh, Village Lanes

The Village Lanes Youth Bowlers are “On A Roll!” (Sorry for the pun, I couldn’t resist). What an exciting time for the Youth in Chase. As I mentioned in one of my previous articles, we had sent a group of young men down to Kelowna for a Travel Tournament where they placed first. Well, I’m happy to report that we are 2 for 2 in gold medals for youth tournaments this season! This past Sunday, four players from our Youth Leagues had the privilege of competing in the BC Youth Games down in Kelowna. The team was comprised of a junior boy and girl, as well as a senior boy and girl. Donovan McLellan, Natalie MacDonald, Haylee Nakazawa, and Carson Mickelson bowled their hearts out at the regionals and annihilated the competition bowling 300+ pins over their combined team average to clinch the gold medal for Chase! Every single one of them had something to give to that team!

Donovan bowled consistently over his average, Natalie threw a huge last game (including a turkey), Haylee bowled her career high score to date, and Carson was the calming presence on the team, holding them all together! I was fortunate enough to get to coach the winning team, and I’ve said it before and will say it again, our youth bowlers never cease to impress me! They listen, they take criticism, and they are always trying to better their game. Village Lanes has been chosen to host this years very prestigious Youth Bowling Canada Provincials, where teams from across the province will compete to see who earns a spot at the Canadian National Championships. The event takes place in March, and our youth are practicing up to take the title! Signing off as a very proud coach, until next time! Cheers!

MacDonald said the majority of what they have to offer is thanks to Chabela’s Cares for Kids, who make large donations every year thanks to their annual BBQ fundraiser. Donations are always needed for children of any age and can be dropped off with the Chase Hamper Society. All donations must be new and unwrapped. MacDonald said that even items such as gift cards, such as movie gift cards, or retail store cards, are greatly appreciated as these donations are great for older children. Those who would like to register to utilize the toy shop services this year can do so by filling out a Food Hamper application and checking the Toy Shop option. Lady Chatterley’s Lover by DH Lawrence

Published in the early 20th century this novel brought no shortage of attention to its author. Censored in many countries for what was deemed to be obscene authorship, the novel portrays a marriage straying from the acceptable norms. Constance, the wife of a paraplegic war veteran, finds life with only him unendurable. In her search for physical satisfaction and comfort she inadvertently crosses societal lines and alters her own

upper-class destiny. Defining passion and intellect Lady Chatterley’s Lover has scenes that are erotic and edgy for 2015, nearly a century after it was written. One of the few classics that I’ve read in the course of my life as a reader, I would recommend this book for the conversations it starts about passion, pleasure and equality. Sometimes the trade-offs that people make are worth the dire consequences.

Della and friends are showing people how to make wreaths! I took my snowblower out, it’s usually fun, but its getting a little tougher each year. THE STORM ICED BY THE HEAT WAVE Only one on ice contest to report on from the past weekend. On Friday night November 27th the KIJHL 2nd place overall Kamloops Storm came to play at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. It was NAAAW Night at the arena and a larger then normal crowd took in the best home ice tilt this season. The 282 hockey hounds were entertained both on and off the ice on this special occasion, including one lucky fan walking away with $540 from the 50/50! The well fought battles between the STORM and the HEAT are always a great event due to 5 seasons of developing a fierce rivalry. Both teams have their fair share of products from Kamloops Minor Hockey and friendships are locked away for 60 minutes as friends take on friends. This game was no different

by Scott Koch except both teams are skilled, fast and smart. So on with one man’s synopsis. Chase opened scoring in the 1st, Zachary Fournier on the powerplay from Pat Brady and Michael Fidanza. But…21

powerplay marker by Dario Piva, all tied up at 2-2. So it’s off to the 3rd where Kamloops came storming out, trying to take over the game. The HEAT were resilient and waited for an opportunity that arrived just over 5 minutes in, Brady from Fidanza and Braden Hughes. Then a minute and 38 seconds later team leading scorer Logan Mostat gets Chase two up from Spencer Farstad. The action and intensity increases as one team holds on to the lead while the other throws everything possible at Nic Bruyere in net (30 of 32). The icing on the cake comes with 1:19 left as Zachary Fournier fires in an empty netter to “seal the deal”. The end result a huge 5-2 victory for the HEAT who remain 8 points back with 3 games in hand of the Division leading seconds later Kamloops gets one from STORM! Hunter Kero, all notched up at 1-1. In the Hot Ice Chips: The next 2 games are 2nd Kolten Moore pops the biscuit in the versus the Grizzlies from Revelstoke. In basket assisted by Nolan a weird quirk in the schedule they play at Parr and Cole Perison. AHMA on Tuesday the 24th and Friday But…the STORM the 27th, both games at 7:00 pm. They are plunk in the equalizer 6 points back of the HEAT with 2 games 3 ½ minutes later, a in hand, so both games are HUGE in the standings!
