Chase part of Swing Riding
Citizens expressed concern regarding the recently signed Trans Pacific Partnership, which extends patents on medication and will make pharmaceuticals more expensive. There were also questions raised about the treatment of veterans and access to specialized services among seniors. One policy not on the platform of the Conservatives is that of electoral reform, which could transition Canada from its archaic first-past-the-post system to
one that acknowledges the votes of all. Proportional representation is a system that allows voters to rank candidates, ensuring that while their first-choice candidate may not be elected, their second choice will still receive some support. The Voting Day is Monday, October 19 from 7 am to 7 pm at the Chase Community Hall. If you need a ride to the polling station, contact one of the candidates and they should be able to coordinate one for you.
Positively Seen in Chase This Week Submitted by Chase and District Chamber of Commerce
Kudos to the Chase Lions Club for continuing with its long history of service to the community despite its diminishing membership. This Saturday, the Chase Lions will host their annual Seniors World Service Day Dinner which will provide an excellent free dinner for 250 local seniors. The meal is provided by the Chase Lions Club and is prepared by Lions Club members with the additional help of other community volunteers. The dinner was established to provide a Thanksgiving meal for seniors without families with whom to share their holiday. Since then it has grown to include more seniors and to give them all an excellent meal and an opportunity to enjoy an evening out among friends. The Lions World Service Day dinner is just one of many local projects the Chase Lions
are completing this month. They will also provide a Halloween event for children and youth followed by a Halloween Dance in support of the Chase Curling Club. Let’s all be sure to support the Lions in their projects and we will all share in the benefits to the community as a whole. Service clubs such as the Lions and the Rotary do much to support our community, and they need us to support them in return. These organizations need more members to be able to continue with the work they do, so if we value the financial support they give to local groups and community projects perhaps we should consider joining them. Our special thanks go to all those long-serving service club members and to the new members who are stepping up to join their ranks.

BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers Unsettling Canada by Arthur Manuel
The words written by Art Manuel, past chief of the Neskonlith Indian Band, will resonate deeply with all readers, but hopefully more-so with residents of the Chase area. His history of the struggle for recognition of First Nations’ land rights in this country is intricately tied to the environmental protection and resource management so desperately needed here and some chapters depict struggles that are based right here in Chase. Each
Turnip Puff
We had this for Thanksgiving dinner and it was a great addition to the meal. It’s worth a try! Ingredients 3 cups cubed peeled turnips 1 tablespoon butter 1 egg 4-1/2 teaspoons all-purpose flour 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1-1/2 teaspoons brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt Dash pepper Dash ground nutmeg TOPPING: 2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs 2 teaspoons butter, melted Directions 1. Place turnips in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce
chapter provides new insight into the complex and sad attempts of the Canadian government to remove land rights from First Nations. The story is deftly woven in a way that is both personal and intellectual, providing all readers with the facts they need to start important dialogue. The most influential book I’ve read on injustice in Canada, this book comes strongly recommended.

Combine the flour, baking powder, brown sugar, salt, pepper and nutmeg; stir into turnip mixture. 3. Spoon into a 3-cup baking dish coated with cooking spray. Toss bread crumbs and butter; sprinkle over casserole. Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 30-35 minutes or until heated through and a thermometer reads 160°. Yield: 3 servings.
