OBITUARY
Arnold Osborne Dawson
BORN: Jan. 19, 1936 @ Smiths Falls, Ont. DIED: Feb. 10, 2016 @ Kamloops. Age 80.
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Arnold Dawson at Kamloops hospital after a courageous fight with cancer and pneumonia. He leaves to mourn, his wife Pat of 46 years, daughter Jennie Dawson, sons Dale Dawson and Derry (Kyla) Dawson, grandsons Tanner and Bradley and granddaughter Hailey, sisters Joyce Davis and Judy (Bill) Budau of Ontario plus numerous nieces, nephews and family in BC and Ont. He was predeceased by dad John, mom Eva and sister Jean Holland and Gwen Youde. Camping and fishing with family and friends and enjoying the odd “cool one” on a hot day was a precious part of his life. “Bush Creek” and “Humamilt” were just the very “Best”! Working as a mechanic in the East, Port Alberni, Kamloops and Chase, then for himself with Chase Towing and later for Mattey Bros. He had a busy life but a good one with many friends along the way. Also spent a few years driving the school bus in Chase were he enjoyed all the students. Gambling trips were a fun part of his life and even the short day trips to nearby casinos were great. A celebration of Arnold’s life will be held Feb 20th (Saturday) at 11 am at the Chase Community Hall with refreshments to follow. Online condolences can be sent to www.schoeningfuneralservice.com. Should friends desire please donate to the Children’s Hospital In Memorium

Word Search Iinternational motherLlanguage day
International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on February 21 to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Mandarin has the highest number of native speakers with 14.1% of the world population, Spanish is at #2 with 5.85% and English follows that with 5.52%. Chhattisgarhi is a language spoken in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, by 17.5 million people. Secwepemctsín is of course the First Nations language of this area and Gitskan, Cree, Haida, Tahltan are some of the BC First Nations languages.
Language Trivia
The word “robot” came from Czech/ Slovak “robotovat,” which means to work very hard. There are only three words in the English language with the letter combination “uu.” Muumuu, vacuum and continuum. ‘Strengths’ is the longest word in the English language with just one vowel. The language Malayalam, spoken in parts of India, is the only language whose name is a palindrome. The Sanskrit word for “war” means “desire for more cows.” In Chinese, the words for crisis and opportunity are the same.

The story is told by a middle-aged Cal Stephanides, a man who works in the foreign service and has trouble starting and keeping up relationships. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides going through puberty. It was then that they realized Cal’s was a different story. Due to a recessive gene Calliope had been born with the outward appearance of a woman, but without some female hormones. With puberty came changes that made her more definitively him and led to some important questions and discoveries. While this is a fictional novel, the story is one that brings to light how a definition
of ‘self ’ can change dramatically, and how we don’t always grow up to be what we thought. It highlights the challenges that intersex and transgender people face, framing it by a character who is highly relate-able and innocent to the oppression in the world. I found this book a little slow through the middle, but very unique and informative. The authors descriptions are beautiful, poignant and often poetic.

The Chase HEAT have three games remaining in the 52 game regular season, before they suit up for the high flying world of KIJHL Playoffs. As in past seasons, the pecking order from 1 to 3 is anything but certain in their Division, which continues the annual tradition of being the most competitive. 100 Mile House WRANGLERS currently are #1 at 70 points, 1 point up on the Kamloops STORM. Both those teams have 2 games left, one of them against each other. Chase is 6 points back of Kamloops at 63 points, with 3 games to go, but could climb into 2nd spot if the hockey god is willing. This past weekend the HEAT roster proved to themselves that they have the “mustard” to take on all comers as they faced two unruly mobs and came out victorious in both battles. Friday night the 12th found the local squad in the Cheese Capital of Canada taking on the North
Okanagan KNIGHTS. Nic Bruyere faced 25 shots, denying all but 1 to backstop the team to a win. This chippy scrum of a game tested the mettle of the HEAT with the result being a 3-1 victory. Tommy Brown popped one in from Mason Palaga and Michael Van Unen. Later in the 1st Michael Fidanza scored from Rylan Van Unen and Brown. The only scoring in the 2nd came from the Armstrong Armed Forces. In the 3rd Travis Beaubien wrapped things up on the powerplay from Bradley Whitehead and Zachary Fournier. On the 13th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena, “Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting”, as the Kamloops STORM arrived bearing arms. There was no scoring in the 1st, however the fans got some entertainment from a Valentines Day Eve Heavy weight bout between Whitehead and the Storm’s Dallas Otto, no love was displayed on this occasion.
277 fans watched in the 2nd as the dipsydoodling rubber legged Pat Brady lasered one in from Beaubien and Ethan Buck. Three minutes later Rylan Van Unen got his 1st of 2 on the night from Kolten Moore and Fidanza. In the 3rd the assault continued with Fidanza from Michael Van Unen and Josh Bourne, then Fournier from Beaubien and Okino. The icing on the cake came on the powerplay with Rylan Van Unen’s 2nd from Moore and Bourne. Daniel Toews between the red posts, was white hot stopping all 24 to earn 1st Star honours in a 5-0 shutout, his first of the season. Don’t miss the EAGLES from Sicamous, on Thursday the 18th. Playoff Bound: The playoffs commence next week but the schedule is unknown until the dust settles on the Division Standings. What is certain is that there will be 2 games at AHMA versus the STORM or WRANGLERS, and notification will go out on social media sites. Wear something red, bring your favourite noise makers, and buckle up as the thrills and chills will be in great abundance. Let’s fill our Ice Palace and cheer YOUR team on like never before!
