Realtor takes home “Best Chilli” title by Cavelle Layes
The Chase museum held their Historic Chilli Competition last Saturday and was met with an outstanding attendance. The event saw eight competitors all battling it out for the number one place and a year’s worth of bragging rights. The competition had such popularity even before the event date, the competitor slots quickly filled up, with a waitlist of people hoping someone might drop out. With eight pots of chilli, no one was leaving with an empty stomach. The judges, Steve Scott (representing the Village council), James Dyck (representing the Chase Fire Department), and Darlene Trowsse (of Chum N Luba’s

Firehouse Dodgeball by Cavelle Layes
Chase Fire Chief, Brian Lauzon, was able to pair work and fun during a recent fire practice. After a number of very saddening calls that hit close to home for many firefighters, Fire Chief Brian Lauzon decided to organize a very unique form of training, designed to bring a smile back to the faces of his members. While many arrived at the fire hall expecting a grueling ob st a cl e c o u r s e s designed to push firefighters to their limits, and see how much air they use while in working situations, instead the chief pulled out a bag of colourful balls and said “let’s have some fun”. The members were told to gear up, including self-containedbreathing-apparatus (or SCBAs) and to divide into two groups on either side of the hall. The Chief announced the night’s events would consist of some good ol’ fashioned games of dodgeball, and event that would surely lighten the mood within the fire house. It was actually a very clever way of sneaking in a variety of

training aspects. Firefighters were able to establish more trust in their SCBA units by running around on air, and they also learned how long they can breathe on a tank. Firefighters were also able to get familiar with their gear and being able to move around in a more physical nature while wearing it. Of course, the activity worked on teambuilding as well, which is a very important aspect in firefighting as well, and served as some muchneeded bonding time. Vo l u nt e e r firefighting requires hundreds of hours dedicated to training at the hall and in the community, at home self-study, participation in fundraisers and community events, and of course on calls. This is all time spent outside of fulltime jobs, family and home life. The Chase Fire Department is very lucky to have a Chief, Deputy, and Captains who go out of their way to ensure there is a little fun mixed into a job that can sometimes be very difficult. For most members, the fire hall is a second home and in it a second family.

Shuswap Experience Trade Show Submitted by the Chase & District Trade Show Committee
In 2015, shortly after the new Board of Directors were sworn in, the Chase & District Chamber of Commerce got right to work connecting with the growing needs in our business community. A survey went out to the business membership and wide spread results showed that there was a greatly desired need for marketing opportunities and venues in our area. The Chamber of Commerce assembled a committee of Board of Directors and Business Members to meet these needs and came up with the idea to host a trade show. The trade show will provide businesses a platform to reach new customers, connect with existing clients, network with other businesses, and further establish their presence in Chase and the Shuswap region. “A trade show offers businesses an opportunity to promote their product or service to a diverse audience that may have little or no knowledge of their product or services. Depending on their business, there is a great opportunity for viable feedback through product testing and demonstration. A trade show also gives you face to face interaction in an ever growing social media marketing world.” says Ali Maki, Business Member - Trade Show Committee. The Shuswap Experience Trade Show will be on Saturday May 7, 2016 at the Art Holding Arena in Chase, BC from 10am to 4pm. There is a 10% discount on tables to Chase & District Chamber of Commerce business membership, as well we are honoring the same discount to both North Shuswap Chamber of Commerce and South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce business membership. Please note, Non-Members are welcome to participate as exhibitors!!! This is not exclusive to Chamber members. What is exclusive however, is the Shuswap Experience Open House being held on Friday May 6, 2016 from 6pm to 9pm for EXHIBITORS ONLY!! The open house will give exhibitors an opportunity to
network with other businesses and visit exhibitor booths prior to the trade show. Also exclusive to exhibitors is the product tasting that will be provided by Monte Creek Ranch Winery and Terroir Cheese of Enderby that evening. We are very excited to have these businesses take part in our event! The Chase & District Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the following businesses who have signed up as sponsors of the event. Platinum Sponsor – Village of Chase. Gold Sponsor – Safety Mart Foods, Chase. Silver Sponsor – Findlay’s Vacuum & Sewing Machine World, Kamloops; Nationwide Appliances, Chase. Bronze Sponsor – Chase Wellness Centre; Donna Smith Bradley, Century 21 Lakeside Realty Ltd., Scotch Creek; Chum N Luba, Chase; The UNcookery Food Truck, Chase; Teri Young Investors Group, Salmon Arm and RTR Performance Inc., Kamloops. The Sponsorship deadline is fast approaching, if you’d like your business to benefit from the many advertising opportunities the packages offer, please do not hesitate as our first print run is March 15th!! Please visit www.chasechamber.com for additional information. Save the date! The first 300 attendees will receive a tote bag with brochures, postcards, coupons etc. from participating exhibitors. There will be many great businesses from around Chase & area showcasing their products or services, scheduled exhibitor demonstrations on the Trade Show Stage, food vendors and more! Admission is FREE to all attendees. We have LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE for exhibitors and space is filling up quickly. For your convenience, you can purchase your exhibitor space on our website at www.chasechamber.com or call the office at 250.679.8432. Skmana History:
Small club with a big heart
By Estelle Noakes and members of Skmana Cross Country Ski Club
Skmana Lakes lie just north of LoakinBear Creek Rd., 14 km from the village of Chase or 8 km off the Adams Lake Rd. The two lakes and surrounding area offer a delightful multipurpose recreational area with skiing, snowshoeing and sledding in winter: camping, fishing, hiking, biking and horseback riding in summer. In early logging days, Adams River Lumber Co. diverted the creek, damming the lake for a flume that transported logs down to the Adams River. Later the area was used as a Japanese work camp during WW11 (the old buildings have just recently been bulldozed) and a biathlon training area was set up (although there is no evidence of its actual use) in the 1970’s. The origins of Skmana Lakes as a winter recreational area began in the early 1980’s when a group from Chase and Pritchard (including the Spencer, Crema, Clark, Lovlin, McLellan, Hopland, Grube, Hutchings and Boscher families) were searching for a winter recreational area for

cross country skiing and a tobogganing hill. The first area they tried was the Niskonlith meadows and they skied and tobogganed there for a few years. Jean Jenks along with sons, Hamish and Ian provided ski lessons for children. The area proved not satisfactory due to the early disappearing and sometimes absent snow. Roger Behn, a teacher from Chase High School, who had been instrumental in the planning for the Biathlon at Skmana Lakes, had some good maps and it was soon discovered that Skmana Lakes lay in a snow belt. An informal recreational area was set up at Skmana Lakes. To enable the club to track the ski trails, Don and Eileen Boscher supplied a snowmobile. The home fashioned tracking equipment was such that someone had to sit on it to weigh it down, a very precarious perch. When the snowmobile turned out to be inadequate, the Boshers lent the club $5000 for the purchase of a Yamaha snowmobile.

Chilli Contest
The Sun Valley chilli once again featured a collaborated effort, with this year’s team consisting of Fran Roach, Linda Locher, Mary Favrin, Leona Froese and Cecilia Callaghan. Third place prize was awarded to Peter Stuhlmann, and his entry named Wild Thing. The awards didn’t stop there however, with the Peoples Choice award being presented to Simone Stella, a Chemistry teacher from Chase Secondary, with his entry called Stella’s Saddleback Chili. It was a very close contest and the chili judges really had a very difficult job to contend with. The evening was topped off with the most excellent local entertainment provided by Guy Spencer (of Chase Mini

The museum staff would like to send thanks to the other contestants for rounding out the field and making such
