BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers Truth and Bright Water by Thomas King A beautiful book by Thomas King, Tecumseh, the young narrator leads us through the hardship of his land and of his life in a small divided town on the AlbertaMontana border. Among the difficult journeys Tecumseh faces his friendship with his first cousin, Lum stands out. Lum is two years older and walks a tougher path than Tecumseh, who has a mother who loves him and makes sure there is enough to eat in the house. By nature the narrator is a careful person, observant and aware of his
surroundings, but despite these good qualities people he cares about can still get the better of him and at 14 years old his journey has just begun. The deft storytelling of Thomas King weaves together a harsh Canadian reality of oppressed indigenous culture, with the strong passionate community that persists and sustains itself. An eccentric artist returns home to Truth and shows, in a rather magical way, how things can be creatively changed for the better.

Chase and District Curling Club enjoys the added component of stick curling in all league play. The “stick” is used as an extension of the arm and the curler walks behind the rock (as seen in the photo). All aspects of the game are be essentially the same when used in 4 person curling. The league also follows Curl Canada Stick Rules when playing 2 person stick league. Some tips when curling with the “stick”: • Wear a non-slip gripper on each foot. • Position yourself in the hack is the same as regular delivery but standing. • For the in-turn, delivery position is at 11:00 o’clock. (Not the normal 10) • For the out-turn, delivery position is at 1:00 o’clock. (Not the normal 2) • Place the stone on a line from the CENTRE of your body to the brush. • Place the curling stick on the handle of the stone. Remember that the curling stick is simply an extension
of your arm. • Keep your delivery arm reasonably straight as you move forward. • Walk forward at an appropriate speed to deliver the stone with the speed or weight that the skip has requested - always on the line to the brush. • The stone must leave the curling stick before the stone touches the hog line • Continue walking forward as a follow through, after the stone has left the curling stick. • For an InTurn, keep the handle of the stone at 11:00 o’clock until you get four feet from the point where you want to release the stone. Then slowly turn the handle of the stone to 12:00 o’clock over the last four feet. For an Out-Turn, keep the handle of the stone at 1:00 o’clock until you get four feet from the point where you want to release the stone. Then slowly turn the handle of the stone to 12:00 o’clock over the last four feet.

Helen Jackson celebrated 100th Birthday by Cavelle Layes Helen Jackson has built a lifetime of experience to take pride in, and celebrating her 100th birthday is just one more milestone to add to the list. Helen spent her 100th birthday, on February 8th, surrounded by family and friends, sharing in some fun and laughs. Last week she sat proudly at her chair, a gift bag by her side filled with birthday cards she proudly reviewed, some sent from friends outside the country. A number of birthday gifts sprinkle some colour around the room, and a few of them even offering the gift of music. While the number on her cards may boldly showcase her 100th year of age, to look at Helen herself you would never have guessed. The lively woman shared stories of her youth, including the tale of her birth in 1916. “It was snowing so hard out,” Helen said. “My mother was on the way to the hospital, but the snow was so thick she had to stop at a neighbors, my mother couldn’t go any farther.” She explained that the doctor had to travel on horseback to see her mother and was barely able to make it. Kidney Month Continues
Last Saturday, the BC Branch of the Canadian Kidney Foundation’s display booth, set up at Safety Mart, collected over $190 for the charity and signed up 4 people to become organ donors. Many others took home forms to sign up via email. The folks running the display, Edna Humphreys of the Kidney Foundation, and Bruce Nelson, a volunteer and grateful kidney recipient, learned that most people in Chase are already signed up as organ donors! A correction from last week’s article about kidneys: It should have stated that a person may have 80% kidney malfunction without any any symptoms!

Water Consumption Clarity
RE: Village of Chase – Billing of Metered Water and Sewer Consumption I would like to have every connected property (homes and businesses) metered separately per household and business & pay for our own consumption. I do not want to pay for what other people use or miss use. Many households don’t even know how the metering and billing will be done. We will all pay a basic and system flat rate charge, as per the sample Village letter. Mayor & councilors may be thinking of using the entire community billing (not the individual properties average). Mobile home people will be billed by the landlord, did not receive sample Village letter. Please take the time and let Mr. Leif Pedersen explain sample bill you received. I found out that I use less than half than the connected community properties average. The Village of Chase does want input regarding the new billing process or by attending meetings. Blessings, Zilly Palamar
A long winded
Thank You
I would like to say thank you to Brooke, Linda and the Safety Mart staff, both past and present. Safety Mart has been a great place to work. Over the decades (wow! yes... not years but decades) at Safety Mart, I have gotten to know a lot of nice people. Once while on holidays a customer phoned me at home to tell me her mother had passed away, so I was able to go the service, which was the next day. A young lady, while in town visiting her family, stopped in the store to introduce me to her newborn baby. I will miss our talks Doreen. You are always
Hire Local?
I have to say that I am surprised to read that this Council agreed to support the new Buy Local! Buy Fresh! program. I say this because I personally have been to the Village office about the constant work being done in this Village by outsiders. By “outsiders” I mean businesses that do NOT pay taxes or owned and operated by our fine people in Chase. Anyone in this Village can have access to the list of contractors and labourers that do work right under our noses from outside the Village. Mostly from Kamloops and usually all hired by our Foreman (who also lives in Kamloops) other wise the work would be tendered out for local tax paying citizens of this Village to do work here. It is unacceptable!!! If you are tired of your tax dollars going to support business outside the Village as I am I urge you to write, call a councillor or attend a meeting to voice your concerns. The businesses in Chase are all struggling to keep doors open for us and to provide services here for us. It is insulting when our own jobs go outside the area for fulfillment. The business owners in Chase are our neighbours and friends. These fine folks pay taxes, pay license fees, try to scratch out a living here to have a nice quality of life and our “so called leaders, the Council and staff ” that we pay send work out. In addition these very Councillors just gave themselves a raise not only a per month salary increase but a substantial expense/travel account raise as well. I don’t think they deserve it! Do you??? To you, thank you and stay young. Wow!! What a last day. All the kind words. Wow! To be sung to by a beautiful woman, with 39 year old eyes. Wow! To the little girl with the big eyes, who watched in awe as a group of us staff stood around eating our Friday ice cream bars: I was happy to see you got a bar. Thanks Brooke! Ice cream and hugs from beautiful women, now that’s a fun Friday!!! I’m going to miss hearing from so many of you, how your children are doing, how your championship bowling went, the number of lambs and calves were born this spring or the birth of your grandchild. In large bowl; mix starter and tomato juice. Add yeast mixture, salt, sugar and stir well. Add 1 cup of flour at a time and beat well. DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE LINE After dispatching the Kamloops STORM in the first round best of 7 in 5 games, the Chase HEAT face an annual foe in round 2. The 100 Mile House WRANGLERS finished first in the regular season and earned home ice advantage as a result. In the first game in the South Cariboo Capital the home team caught the HEAT sleeping at the wheel to claim a 6-1 victory. The play was not as bad as the score indicates, but Chase only scored once off the twig of Zach Fournier from Rylan Van Unen and Josh Bourne. Nic Bruyere and Daniel Toews shared time in the twine facing 33 shots. Game 2 was the next night, Saturday March 5th, and a marathon of epic proportions resulted. 100 Mile got on the board first, but Braden Hughes on the powerplay from Kolten Moore and Trevor Okino evened things up in the 2nd. The WRANGLERS got another one in the 2nd, before Moore in the 3rd from Tommy Brown and Hughes notched it at 2-2. The 1st overtime period
by Scott Koch
passed, the 2nd overtime flew by, and in the 3rd overtime after 102 minutes of play the WRANGLERS scored to claim win number 2. Bruyere went the distance stopping 41 of 44, unfortunately he
suffered a serious upper body injury on a collision after the winning tally. Game 3 was teed up on a non traditional Monday night the 7th where 371 anxious fans took in the contest. At the Art Holding Memorial Arena a page was taken from Game 2. 100 Mile stormed out in the 1st scoring once. Chase came back hard in the 2nd, evening things up, Hughes from Moore and Michael Fidanza.
Chase Community
In the nail biting 3rd the WRANGLERS scored , but with 2:11 left Michael Howlett on a beauty one timer evened things from Travis Beaubien and Brown. Off to overtime , back and forth action through the 1st with opportunities for both teams. In the 2nd overtime some furious action in the goal mouth saw Beaubien be the game hero as he slid in the winner from Bourne and Hughes. Toews went the distance in net denying 48 of 50 pucks fired at him for the huge victory. The series after 3 games in the best of 7 is 2-1 in favour of the WRANGLERS. Game 4 was after press time and was played on Tuesday the 8th, with game 5 in 100 Mile House on Thursday the 10th. OVERTIME: Solid defender Braden Hughes at this point leads all KIJHL playoff scoring with 5 goals and 5 assists for 10 points. Boom Boom Beaubien is 3rd with 4 goals and 5 assists. Aches and pains are rampant with both squads, as the crash, bash and slash of playoff hockey night after night takes it’s toil. Watch social media sites for the latest updates on when games are, don’t miss any of the action as the HEAT represent the Shuswap versus the Cariboo!
