While the decision was announced on March 8th, it had actually been made during an incamera session on February 8th, a practice Heinrich explains is normal. “The Council is permitted under legislation to make those decisions in closed meetings before they become known to the public,” Heinrich said. Doctor Recruitment

Interior Health Authority (IHA) has determined that Chase should have a compliment of 4.0 positions for Doctors. The Chase Medical Clinic is under the care of Dr. C. Barnard, Dr. C. Ferguson and Dr. A. Redel. All 3 doctors have full practices. There is more demand for medical services than can be met by our 3 physicians and currently there is a wait list. The Chase Clinic has formed a task force designed specifically to recruit a fourth doctor for the practice. Our Doctor Recruitment Team consists of 6 people with degree of knowledge of our past medical and community history, plus a member of Village Council. We believe it is possible to successfully recruit a suitable Doctor within 2016. In our efforts to do so, we have joined with IHA to post this vacancy to reach as broad a spectrum of candidates as possible. The issue of a Doctor shortage affects everyone in our area. If you know of a physician who might be interested in this type of General Practice, or if you have some specific information you feel would assist with our search, we welcome your input. Reach us by email at sarah.chaseclinic@gmail.com or by leaving a message for Sarah Turgeon-O’Brien at 679-1420

Letter to the Editor Trash Talk

This letter is directed to anyone who drives down VLA Road, especially those heading west. This morning while walking the section from the sharp turn to the train tracks, I picked up numerous pieces of litter on the river side of the road. Most articles were from fast food outlets, beer cans, and other miscellaneous items. I'm assuming that those who throw out this stuff do it to keep their vehicles clean and tidy--do they think that because

The early spring weather means many of us are spending more time outside. We aren’t the only ones enjoying the unseasonable warmth - the change in weather also brings out ticks – small bugs that feed on the blood of humans and animals and can sometimes transmit disease. Ticks are most often found in tall grass and wooded areas, so covering up before you head outdoors and checking for ticks on yourself, your children, and your pets after being outdoors, are simple things that go a long way to prevent tick bites.

there are no homes in this stretch of the road, no one sees this litter or cares about it? There are many walkers, joggers, and cyclists who use VLA Road; I am sure that part of their enjoyment comes from the beautiful surroundings. Please think twice before opening your window and chucking out unwanted items--take them home for recycling or put them in your own garbage can so that we can continue to enjoy our local road. “The most common tick species in the Interior Health region is the Wood Tick (Dermacentor andersoni), which is not known to carry the Lyme disease bacteria, said Dr. Silvina Mema, Medical Health Officer with Interior Health. “The Wood Tick can carry other diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, although it is very rare. Some ticks also have toxins that can cause temporary muscle weakness and paralysis but the symptoms fade once the tick is removed.”

Needed: Healthy Kidneys By Kelsey Snelgrove

What can you do in two minutes? Perhaps scroll through some photos on Facebook or scan through news headlines. Or you could take the time to register to become an organ donor at www.transplant.bc.ca. 95% of British Columbians support organ donation, but only 20% of people in BC have actually registered their decision. 75% of 4500 Canadians on the organ waiting list are in need of kidneys. Kidney Foundation volunteers

in Chase took donations throughout March, which was Kidney Month. The volunteers would like to express gratitude to the community: “Thank you everyone who has donated to the Kidney Foundation campaign this month, held at Safety Mart, the Post Office, and at your door. The winners of the little draw at the post office were P. Parton, J. Walker and E. Folland. Anyone wishing to donate online may do so at kidney.ca/bc”.

Crime rate high: RCMP encourages reporting of ALL incidents Chase thefts are at a peak and the Chase RCMP are taking the matter seriously. While A/SGT. Gord Sauer has not analyzed the statistics in reporting, he has noted that the areas theft and break-in rate generally tends to follow peaks and valleys, high points and low points. “Chase, right now, has above average reports of thefts and break-ins being reported,” Sauer stated. “That said, we do not believe all incidents are being reported, and we do greatly encourage they all are, no matter how mundane it may seem.” Sauer noted that reporting anything that might seem strange or suspicious can possibly help aid their case. “A break-in to residence on March 16th was reported right away, around

621 1st Ave, Chase BC 250-679-8811

by Cavelle Layes midnight,” Sauer said. “In which case, the Chase police were able to attend in prompt fashion and located a male who was identified as the suspect in the breakin, and was then arrested.” “He was taken before a judge in the Kamloops court and subsequently released,” Sauer said. “The police have current monitoring conditions on him to ensure that he is complying, allowing police to keep close tabs on him and we are doing that.” Sauer noted that one of the harder aspects of cases such as these is obtaining enough evidence to hold up in court. He again stressed the importance of community members coming forward with their reports. “We encourage the public to report anything and everything that is suspicious to the police,” Sauer said. “At this current time it seems Dodge vehicles are being primarily targeted,” he said, adding the trucks are mostly late 90’s and 2000 model trucks. Sauer was not able to speculate what the stolen trucks are being used for, but explained that in many cases such as this, it is simply a means to get from point A to point B. While police are trying to follow up all the information reported to them, they ask that the community tries to help as well. “Take extra measures to keep your property in a state less likely to be stolen,” Sauer said, noting that if it is harder to be stolen, the thief might pass them up. “Some people are removing their vehicle batteries overnight,” Sauer said, “or parking their other vehicles in behind their Dodge trucks to make it harder.” Sauer acknowledge the fear some Chase residents are experiencing at night as a result of the

local break-ins. He again stressed the importance of calling in any signs that something might be off, as soon as it is happening. There are also a number of ways residents can help make themselves feel more secure. “The first thing people need to do to protect themselves is ensure doors and windows are locked and secured,” Sauer said, noting that most cases of break-ins have been a result of easy access. “Simply locking a door can prevent a crime. Further steps such as installing alarms and lighting things up at night is a definite deterrent as well.” Sauer confirmed they are putting every effort out to catch the source(s) of the crime hike. However, a shortage of staffing has made their job difficult, and has prevented them from approaching the situation the way they would ideally like to. “The Chase detachment has not been able to provide any increase in patrols,” Sauer said. “It has remained the same over winter season, do to unfortunate circumstances, including shortage in staffing.” “That is increasing the difficulty in targeting the criminals more active at night.” Sauer said. If community members are concerned about the staffing shortage within the Chase detachment, Sauer explained reaching out to the local government would be the best option. “Essentially our police services are a matter of what comes down to public interest,” he explained. “That public interest can be voiced through local parliament, including MLAs. That would most likely be a proper venue to voice concerns about that.” Sauer said Chase RCMP are keeping tabs on the new Chase Neighborhood Watch Facebook page. Overall, the department believes the efforts made there to be positive ones. “Essentially there is always a positive in having open communication lines,” Sauer said. “The Chase RCMP do not necessarily have a position whether [the Facebook page] is good or bad, but the sharing of info is always positive. ”

Curling Arena Village’s Now

“If the municipality needs to borrow money to acquire the property, they need to go out to the tax payers,” she said. “If they do not need to get a loan, they don’t need to and can make the decision in a closed meeting.” While this purchase wasn’t originally in the budget, Heinrich said they were able to shuffle some things around to make it fit. “This item was one of the reasons the budget has been delayed,” Heinrich said. The Village staff were able to move some things off of the five-year-plan and place them on the six and seven-year-plan, Heinrich said. Capital items deferred to the 2021 budget to free up funds to purchase the curling rink outright were: New Rescue Truck ($80,000), Communications Equipment Upgrade for Fire Department ($68,000), Memorial Park Beach Volleyball Court ($30,000), Mountain Sheep Park/Rock Wall ($30,000). The curling club has been struggling for a number of years as membership numbers have been declining. “They lost some members to other clubs because they weren’t sure if there would even be a club in the future,” Heinrich said. “I do not think that curling has become any more or less popular,” Heinrich said. “People are still interested and with school kids involved it is great because they will talk about it with their friends

and parents and in the community, creating even more buzz.” The Council hopes that a number of other factors might help with the success of the curling club in the future as well. “There is a subdivision plan coming in for the old ball field on Aylmer road,” Heinrich said. “The subdivision will generate more interest in all recreation activities over the next few years, including the curling club.” There will be some changes coming in the future in regards to the curling rink, now that the Village will own it. However, for the most part, things will remain the same. The Village will now be in charge of the cost of maintenance and upkeep for the curling rink building and land, however, Village staff will be working with the association to put a proper fund in place and help them to generate money for this purpose. The curling club had applied for a grant this year but are still waiting to hear if they will receive it. Heinrich said, now that the club will be owned by the Village, they will be eligible to access many grants, which will also hopefully generate some more money. “Memberships are about the same as last year,” Heinrich said, “but there have been additional people participating and using the club than last year, for different types of programs.”

John Norman Cunningham October 9, 1935 ~ March 17, 2016

John Cunningham peacefully passed away at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice after a short illness. Loved ones were by his side, as well as the wonderful support staff at hospice. John leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Jeannie; sons, Fred (Lynda), Brian (Michele) and Jeannie’s son Kelly (Dev); and daughter, Tracey (Mike). He is survived by six grandchildren, two great grandsons, five siblings and extended step family. Special thanks to John’s brother, Bob, for all his support over the past weeks. John touched many lives in his lifetime as a heavy equipment operator, window cleaner, city transit driver and trucker. He retired in Turtle Valley 20 years ago where he enjoyed life on the farm. Many fun times were spent camping, travelling and enjoying hot dog nights around a campfire at the farm. John, who was predeceased by two daughters, Wendy and Denise, and stepson, Rusty; will be very sadly missed by all who knew him. A hard working man, he leaves a large hole in all our hearts! We’ll miss his stories, humour and loving ways! Thanks to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice staff, Dr. Heunis and Dr. Sze. A celebration of life was held at Chase Creekside Senior Centre on Sunday, March 20. If so desired, contributions in memory of John may be made to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice, 72 Whiteshield Crescent South, Kamloops, BC, V2E 2S9. Online condolences may be sent through John’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com. Arrangements are in the care of Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium, Salmon Arm.
