Mark ‘Food Drive’ on your calender
The need for more support for the Chase Hamper Society is clear, and with the experience of the Kamloops Rotary Clubs and the Kamloops Food Bank every year as they have conducted a fall and spring food drive for the past 10 years, it became very evident that the Chase Rotary Club could lend a hand. We will be distributing yellow Rotary Food bags with the April 22 edition of the Shuswap Market News, and will conduct a door to door pick up on the main residential area of Chase from 9 AM to 12 Noon on April 30. Just place your bag of food on your front steps, and a Rotarian will pick it up! For those living out of the downtown area, you can drop your donation off at the Community Hall office of the Chase Hamper Society
between 9 AM and Noon, and a Rotarian will be there to accept your donation, or in the drop boxes provided at Safety Mart Foods, or People’s Food and Drugs. All donations will then be turned over to the Chase Hamper Society, to be used for the benefit of needy families in Chase. Chase Rotary would like to thank the Chase Hamper Society, the Chase Chamber of Commerce, Shuswap Market News, the Kamloops Rotary Clubs, the Kamloops Food Bank, NL Radio, Village of Chase, Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band, Little Shuswap Indian Band, Safety Mart Foods, People’s Food and Drugs, and the citizens of Chase, for all the support shown in helping to organize this event.

S. Arm event benefits 2 charities Submitted by Kathryn Vennard
It’s time for the 5th Annual She Shoe Swaps and the ladies are excited. This is a unique charity event that gives women a chance to shop up a storm and all the proceeds go to two local causes - the Shuswap Area Family Emergency Society (SAFE) and Rosemarie’s Fund held by the Shuswap Community Foundation. The unique part is that there are no deductions for expenses, when we say all proceeds, we mean ALL proceeds. Each year the sale gets bigger and better. This year, the sale has gotten so big, it’s moved to a new location. On Saturday May 7, 2016 the sale doors open at 9:30 a.m. at the Okanagan College and with the additional space, we are sure there will be more to see and more to buy. The Mall at Piccadilly in Salmon Arm has been very kind to host us for the last 4 years, but we wanted to arrange a location that would be certain for the next several years. This event gives women the opportunity to donate their new or gently used shoes, boots and handbags. The names of the donors are entered into draws for great prizes like gift certificates, movie tickets, and other great things. When have you ever been rewarded for cleaning out your closet? This is your chance. The shoes and bags are sorted, and
the sale is a one day blitz where ladies can purchase most items for $10 a pair or purse. Some really wonderful items are priced a little higher but the result is two charities benefit, ladies are thrilled with their purchases and everyone feels really good about it. Donation boxes will be in place as of April 1st at the RBC in Salmon Arm on Alexander Street, InView Optical at the Mall at Piccadilly and for those ladies in Chase, Sorrento and Blind Bay, a box will be at the SASCU in Sorrento. If the donations are from further away, we can arrange for pick-up. In previous years we have had donations from Kelowna, Kamloops, Vi c t o r i a , Edmonton, Calgary and even Yellowknife! Two years ago the organizers received some really great donations of purses and the Ooh la la Purse Raffle was started. This year is the third year for the raffle and we have again some beautiful bags. Tickets are just $2 each and can be purchased at several businesses in Salmon Arm. For information about how this happy event got started, or if you would like to make a donation, please see our website, www.sheshoeswaps.com or Facebook page.

Walter Montgomery – Chase’s logging photographer Business Listings by Jim Cooperman
In addition to the hundreds of forestry workers who flocked to Chase when the Adams River Lumber Company set up its massive sawmill, there was a young, very skilled photographer who came to stay for the rest of his life. After working as an itinerant photographer throughout southern Alberta, the Okanagan and the Kootenays, Walter Forrest Montgomery moved to the town in the spring of 1909 and soon became a very respected and much appreciated member of the community. Years later, his magnificent images became legendary. Montgomery, who became known as Monty, was born near Guelph, Ontario in 1879 and after taking a photography course he toured around the countryside on a bicycle taking photos of farms and farming families. In 1901, he moved to Fernie, B.C., where he became a partner with another photographer.

Ingredients ⅓ cup melted coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil ½ honey 2 eggs 1 cup packed mashed ripe bananas (about 3 bananas) ¼ cup milk 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling on top 1¾ cups whole wheat flour ⅓ cup old-fashioned oats Instructions Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (165 Celsius). Grease 11 cups of your muffin tin with butter. In a large bowl, beat the oil and together with a whisk. Add eggs and beat well. Mix in
From this studio he traveled extensively taking photos of cattle roundups, rodeos and logging. He later tried working in a Calgary studio, but soon decided that indoor photography was not for him. Once settled in Chase, Monty soon joined other townsfolk to enjoy Saturday evenings at the Whitfield Chase ranch house, where musicians gathered to play alongside the family organ. It was at one of these gatherings that he met Whitfield’s 18-yearold granddaughter, Becky. They soon were off together on nature hikes in the hills around Chase. Two years later, their romance ended tragically when Becky died from typhoid fever, after nursing her brother who had contracted the disease. Monty remained a bachelor for the rest of his life, and when he was home he visited her gravesite every Sunday. Continued on page 6...
the mashed bananas and milk, followed by the baking soda, vanilla extract, salt and cinnamon. Add the flour and oats to the bowl and mix with a large spoon, just until combined. If you’d like to add any additional mix-ins, like nuts, chocolate or dried fruit, fold them in now. Divide the batter evenly between the 11 muffin cups, filling each cup about twothirds full. Sprinkle the tops of the muffins with a small amount of oats (about 1 tablespoon), followed by a light sprinkling of sugar (about 1 teaspoon). Bake muffins for 23 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a muffin comes out clean. Place the muffin tin on a cooling rack.

He was a rare friend to all, without walls to prevent him from showing his feelings and caring for those he loved. He was a teacher of life and morals and he led by example. He was a truly happy man who felt so blessed to have the people and comforts of his home, and the ability to do the things he grew up loving. There will be a celebration of life at the Adams Lake Recreation and Conference Center in Chase, BC on Saturday April 9th at 2pm. The family welcomes all in celebrating Brian’s life.

Can a kangaroo jump higher than a house? Of course, a house doesn’t jump at all. My dog used to chase people on a bike a lot. It got so bad, finally I had to take his bike away.

Long-form census jobs available by Kelsey Snelgrove Statistics Canada is looking for people to gather information in the TNRD for this year’s Census. Statistics Canada’s Regional Assistant Director, Mr. Kwong Wong said the Census is the primary basis for the government to plan for services, especially in smaller communities. “Our goal for the 2016 Census program is to restore the quality of data for special populations at all levels of geography — that’s including the coverage of small municipalities to the level of the 2006 Census. This will provide communities with information that they need to make decisions on services such as schools, roads, health care, policing, transit and social services,” said Wong. The long-form Census, which has questions very similar to the National Household Survey of 2011, will be collected on a mandatory basis on a 5 year cycle going fowrard. Wong noted there are employment opportunities for First Nations people
living on Adams Lake Indian Band, Neskonlith Indian Band and Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band. “All households and dwellings on reserves will be enumerated using the long-form census in person. This is even more reason for us to recruit and hire people living on reserves,” said Wong. The work available are is month-long employment for $16.31 per hour plus authorized expenses. There were 150 positions to be filled in the TNRD. “To be eligible, one must be 18 years or older, a Canadian citizen, be in possession of a valid work permit or have permanent resident status — but having knowledge about your community is important. Be prepared to work long days, evenings, weekends and holidays”, said Kwong. The questionnaires will hit Canadian reserves in mid-April while the remaining population will see the Census letter or package in May. To apply for employment, visit www. census.gc.ca/jobs as soon as possible.
