Hose Testing Day
PHOTO & WRITEUP SUPPLIED BY CAVELLE LAYES
Chase Volunteer Firefighters gave up their Sunday last week to conduct the annual hose testing. The process was expected to take 10 hours, but with hard work and a great turn out the members were able to complete the process in just seven. Sorry for any inconvenience the road closure may have caused and thank you to Mayor and Council for BBQing lunch for the tired members. INVESTORS ALERT!

Annual Celebration of the Arts at CSS
Chase Secondary School will be holding their annual Celebration of the Arts on Wednesday May 4th at 7:00pm in the CSS gymnasium. It is an opportunity for the community to visit the school and see all of the tremendous projects students have completed throughout the year. The evening will consist of various performing arts on stage, covering music, dance, and drama while the audience enjoys baked goods from our foods department, and Indian tacos from our Shuswap language class. Scattered throughout the gym will be projects that students have chosen to showcase. “Bringing in the community to see what goes on behind the walls of
the school is really important”, says David Bakker, the music director at Chase Secondary, “Students want to feel that the work they accomplish in school will be seen and appreciated by someone other than their own teacher.” This annual event is generally held the first week of May. It began as “Music Monday”, a way to showcase the musical talents at the school, but over the years, the scope has expanded to include all of the subjects where art has been utilized to accomplish a task. It’s always very well attended, so you’ll want to arrive early for a good seat. Doors open at 6:30, with the onstage entertainment beginning at 7:00.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Re: Recent Federal Election I wonder how many people, in this federal riding, voted for Justin Trudeau? While he was on the ‘stump’ he made something like 171 promises. He did not mention what he was going to include in his first budget that concerned banking. Canada has four major banks. Because I’m ‘older than dirt’ I can remember when the Bank of Toronto and the Dominion Bank of Canada merged. The same goes for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (Imperial and Commerce were two separate banks.) But, I digress. Some readers may recall the recent banking failures on Cyprus. To dig themselves out of a financial mess these banks began taking depositors’ monies. Well, on page 223 of the PM’s budget there is a paragraph that states ‘our’ banks, if in financial difficulties, may use depositors’ funds just like the banks on Cyprus did.
The one difference here is that our bank would issue shares to those whose funds were expropriated (a.k.a: stolen). Somehow I do not think shares in an financial institution, that is in financial distress, to be worth very much. Now, before readers begin a stampede to retrieve their savings they should know that the Canadian banking system is well-managed and healthy. It is regarded as the one of the best in the world. In 1923 the Home Bank failed. All through the Great Depression, to the present day, there have been no failures (during the Depression the the USA suffered 9,000 bank failure!) Besides, your savings are now insured, at not cost to you, for a maximum of $100,000 dollars. So, our banks are in good shape, but, one must wonder why the PM found it necessary to insert this clause in his Budget? B. Elmer Borneman, Chase

MP Arnold on the 2016 Budget Submitted by MP Mel Arnold, North Okanagan-Shuswap
It has been an exhilarating four months since I took my seat in the House of Commons representing the North Okanagan- Shuswap. The work of Parliament is of major significance to all of our lives and I appreciate the honour of representing our constituency in Ottawa. Transitioning into the role of Member of Parliament is an unforgettable experience and I would like to thank all the individuals and groups from across the riding that have provided me input and feedback as I continue in this process! The first federal budget of the 42nd Parliament was tabled on March 22 and my work in preparation for this budget began in February when I began the process of pre-budget consultations. Through rounds of meetings, I was able to connect with elected representatives from 30 communities and 5 First Nations from across the riding to discuss the needs and priorities of our riding. I was also able to consult with Provincial MLAs on their perspectives and efforts to deliver positive results for our communities. Connecting with all these representatives provided me a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities that we face in the North Okanagan- Shuswap. Priorities include treatment and handling systems for water and sewage that require investment. The momentum of recent safety improvements to the Trans-Canada Highway needs to be carried forward as do safety improvements on other highways in our region including Highway 97 and Highway 6. Representatives I met also raised the need for increased skills training and supports for those suffering from mental illness. I learned that there are spaces in the riding that can accommodate these sorts of programs and supports if funding can come from Ottawa for retro-fitting existing buildings and funding services. Affordable housing is also a challenge that too many people are facing in our region and it is apparent that access to affordable housing is effective in helping those who are motivated to improve their situation and work towards greater self-sufficiency. I compiled the information gathered in these consultations, provided it to the government and continue to work hard
to fulfill my role as your MP and produce results. This means that my office and I will continue to engage with the government, all the way up to the Prime Minister, to ensure that they know what is needed in the North Okanagan- Shuswap. This is an essential part of my job as your MP and I will continue to press the government for results. Another essential part of my job is holding the government to account on its policies, including fiscal policy in the budget. I remain concerned about the level of debt delivered in the budget. PM Trudeau promised to limit the deficit this year to $10 billion but has delivered a deficit much larger than that. “How can our MP be seeking funding from the budget but be opposed to the deficit it brings?” you may be asking yourself and this is a valid question. The answer is this: I believe that federal funding and balanced budgets are both possible and not exclusive of each other. Government needs to invest in communities but with balanced budgets that do not burden taxpayers, both present and future. Federal governments have run deficits in past years when, frankly, they had to. When Canada’s economy was in recession shrinking at a rate of 4% per year, it was clear that a deficit was appropriate to stimulate the economy. However, Canada’s economy today is not shrinking; according to Statistics Canada, it is growing. Our economy has grown for the past four consecutive months reported which begs the questions of why the federal government is running a deficit at all and breaking its promise to limit deficit spending to $10 billion when our economy has actually been growing. My rejection of the 2016 deficit will not stop me from pressing forward in advocating on behalf of the North Okanagan- Shuswap because if we are all on the hook to repay the debt then we should all be receiving a fair portion of the spending. I was elected to advocate on your behalf and that is what I will continue to do. Mel Arnold, Member of Parliament North Okanagan- Shuswap

the Federal and Provincial Fisheries, and along with three other Chase organizations to operate a concession at the Adams River Spawning grounds park display area (presently Haig-Brown Park) from October 10th to October 25th. This became a continuing project occurring every fourth year, the most current being October 1990. Since 1974, however, the project has been shared with Sorrento Lions - 2 weeks each with Chase Lions being responsible for the first two. Much of the proceeds during the first years was used to purchase the .9A of land for site and construction of a 2-sheet Curling Rink. However, Christmas hampers for the needy, Christmas dinners for older citizens living alone and in need, and several school projects were also undertaken. Here is another “one-for-the-record”, the first annual Chase & District JamCan Curling Spiel for young people of age 6-12 was hosted - April 11, 1971 - a two day event with 24 rinks participating. On April 17, 1971, the Club hosted the B.C. Jam-Can Play-downs with the assistance of the Salmon Arm Lions Club. This became an annual event. In the fall of 1975, after much work and help from many, our first real “jam-can’ rocks were produced (February 1976). Since then rocks have changed, new brushes adopted, participation increased to as high as 80 rinks, but the annual enthusiasm has not waned. Established (October ‘71) the pocketbook box also known as the Lions Book-bin, first located at Erwin’s Bakery, then the Snack Shack. This is an ongoing project raising money for Easter Seal Camperships at Camp Winfield. Other Centennial ‘71 projects and activities were Bavarian Gardens (‘71’77), boat raffle, donation to the Kamloops Wildlife Park, light bulb sale ($284.39), Lions acting as Santa Claus at Children’s Christmas parties, and the 1st installation of Lady Lions (November 6, 1971), More Lions Club History to be continued...
