Submitted by Chase Rotary Club On Saturday, April 30th, the Chase Rotary Club partnered with the Chase Hamper Society and blitzed Chase in their Semi-Annual Rotary Food Drive from 9 am to noon. 1400 lbs were weighed in on Saturday, but with further collections the total should reach 2500 lbs. Chase was divided into 5 areas of focus and thanks to the community who placed their Bags of Help near their front porch and Rotarians collected a bounty of food. Remember, all the food collected stays in Chase to help feed your neighbours and friends. You also heard on Saturday, advertising on NL Radio coordinating a similar Rotary Food Drive in Kamloops. Chase Excellence Pageant Recognizes Royalty On Saturday night at CSS, the culmination of 6 months of work by the Miss Chase Excellence Committee and five young women who had attended classes twice a week since October concluded with a Pageant. Judges from Salmon Arm, Kamloops and Airdrie Alberta selected Bianca Damatto as Miss Chase Princess and Makayla Laluha as Miss Chase Queen. Each candidate had a vote for Miss Congeniality and their winner is Ashley Nickerson. During the evening, each girl gave a three to five minute speech of their choice with no podium, plus answered an impromptu question which addresses their ability to think on their feet and lastly, modelling their evening gowns. Also presented were the Academic Excellence award received by Makayla, the Garden of the Shuswap Blossom Award received by Ashley and Natalie MacDonald because they had both ‘grown’ the most over the past six months and the Alice MacDougall Knowledge Award was
Submitted by Jacquie Everett received by Malayla. Greetings were passed on in their absence from MP Mel Arnold and MLA Todd Stone. This program provides leadership, time management, and lifetime experiences so these young women can progress through their lives with confidence and a positive attitude that enables them to be able to succeed. The community sponsors (Legion Ladies Auxiliary. #107, Lions Club, Pritchard Community Assn. Rotary Club and Safety Mart Foods) each provide financial and community support so these young women can wear evening gowns, business suits and casual wear for all occasions. Since these young women will be Chase Ambassadors they have the full support of the Village and Council when they visit other neighbouring communities plus, during this year’s pageant there were six visiting communities from Barriere, Kamloops, Peachland, Trail, Vernon and West Kelowna plus, Miss BC Ambassador.
The Miss Chase Excellence Committee would like to extend their best wishes to the Chase retiring Royalty Kylie Schmidt, Megan Johnston and Katherine Womacks wish them luck in their future education and adventures!

Rotary has Food Drive in the Bag
We are fortunate to be able to “piggy-back” with the Kamloops drive because they provide our bags and advertising. Next Fall, the Salmon Arm Rotary Clubs are organizing to include their community in this worthwhile program and assist their two food banks with Bags of Help. In Chase, the three First Nations Bands also participate. They collect Bags
of Help and on the second week of May, a Rotarian visits each Band Office and picks up and delivers the yellow bags to the Chase Hamper Society. Also, Peoples Food and Drugs and Safety Mart Foods have bins near their exits year round to help the Hamper Society collect food so, if you were missed or you forgot to contribute, drop off your yellow bags at either store.

At a recent Chase Lions Club meeting, Deputy Fire Chief, Bill Banting gave a presentation of what equipment would be beneficial to the Volunteer Fire Department and Chase. Bill explained a system called “IamResponding”, which lets you know immediately who is responding to your calls and dispatches, where they are responding, and when they will be responding. This saves critical time, and reduces response times for fire departments responding to emergencies. The IamResponding.com system, allows you to: • Know immediately if you have a full crew on the way, or if you need to page additional personnel; • Stop waiting for members who are not on their way, and stop leaving the station just as others are coming around the corner; • Know who is responding to the station,
scene or any other location; • Get out with more complete, more effective and safer crews faster; and • Reduce response times; • Dispatch messages right to all mobile devices; • Mapping of your incidents, with voice and visual navigation to the scene; • Hydrant and water source mapping; and much more…. Pancake Breakfast will be served from 8:00 am to 11:00 am in the Chase Community Hall Basement on Sunday May 8, 2016 . Pancakes, sausage, old fashioned (bone in) ham, strawberries, whipped cream, coffee, tea, juice. So let the Chase Lions cook breakfast for mom; enter her name in the draws for hanging flower baskets and donate to this worthwhile community cause. Chase Lions will issue a tax receipt for any donation of $100.00 or more

Sewer Lagoon Explained
There have been questions asked recently about the odours from the Village’s sewer treatment facility. In a nutshell, there are 2 lagoons, both receive raw sewage and bacteria start to break down the material. Over time biosolids accumulate in the lagoons and they need to be cleaned out once in a while. Problem for us is that we have not been able to shut one lagoon down to clean it and keep the other operating as there is no piping in place for this to happen - currently the lagoons are connected and cannot operate independently. And we cannot shut down BOTH lagoons at the same time or we would have a serious situation on our hands with
people’s sewers backing up. So in effect we have not been able to clean out the lagoons properly since the system was put in - in 1982! What we are doing this year (we got some grant funds from the Province and the Federal Government late last yearthank goodness as this upgrade project is costing $1.6 million) is putting in the necessary piping, pumps and screen works so that we can shut down one lagoon to clean it while the other one continues to operate. That means that when we are able to clean out the lagoons (one at a time) this will significantly reduce the odours. If you have any questions, please contact the Village office at 250.679.3238 or email chase@chasebc.ca.

Charles Dickens walks into a bar and orders a martini. The bartender asks, “Olive or Twist?” Why didn’t the lifeguard save the drowning hippie? He was too far out, man. I have recently changed the sound of my alarm clock to “Justin Bieber - Baby”. Now I wake up 5 minutes earlier every day so I don’t have to listen to it.

A panda walks into a bar and gobbles some beer nuts. Then he pulls out a gun, fires it in the air, and heads for the door. “Hey!” shouts the bartender. The panda yells back, “I’m a panda. Google me!” Panda: “A tree-climbing mammal with distinct blackand-white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves.”

Continued from previous issue... The first donation to Variety Club Telethon was made (1974 - $100) and has continued annually. Other 1974 activities were: construction of 16 picnic tables (May, June); purchased uniforms and equipment for a girls softball team; authorized the construction of Lions display case for the Church Hall (May ‘74); donated a piano to the OAPO (October ‘74); the 2nd Annual Mobile Dental Clinic was sponsored for a period of 6 weeks during the summer; participated in a Zone D6 project; Lucky Leo Lottery sales project was adopted September ‘74 and continued till 1988. It was not only a good money maker for us but also served as a good community PR program. Donated $21.00 to the Lions International Foundation Fund (‘75) for the first time and have continued annually it presently is known as LCIF. The first major contribution to CNIB was made - $500.00. The first annual High School concession project was undertaken (‘75) and continued till 1989. The first Friendship banner was drafted, adopted, and ordered (April ‘75). A stretcher was purchased and donated to the Curling Club for emergency use (May ‘75). Then there was a Vegas Night, Magic Show, Church Banquet Table Fund, Birchwood project, Easter Seal kits, Hockey skateathon; and lest we forget endorsement of an Emergency Medical facility for Chase as a top priority project (January ‘75). The new Lions year (‘75-’76) started with a “bang” - Bavarian night in July realized $1,295.00 - a refreshment bar and casino on Fall Fair day - almost another $1,000. With the net proceeds, 6 concrete tables were purchased and installed at the Chase Park ($1,778). Five of these are still in good condition and much used; also planted some 30 trees and most have survived; $500 was donated to the Chase Fire Hall for the purchase of new chairs for its lounge. In October ‘75 as a Lions Service Day activity, the Lions entertained the Senior Citizens of the area with a supper and social ($130.00). In 1982 the date was changed to midNovember and in subsequent years, the project evolved into a Seniors Christmas dinner and social at the Chase Community
Hall with some 270 in attendance and with 30 or so dinners delivered to Senior shutins by the Meals-on-heels Committee. The 28th annual was held in October ‘03. With the increase in membership (50), the Club had outgrown the United Church base-ment meeting hall. In June ‘76 - an agreement had been reached to rent the banquet and kitchen of the W.I. Hall for two meetings per month, September to June. The rent of $700 was to be paid semiannually. In February ‘82 it was changed to $725and presently it is $810, also paid semi-annually. The Club moved to the WI Hall in September and has met there since. In June ‘76, the Chase Lions Club voted to act as the sponsoring body and reactivate the Scouting movement in Chase & District. This involved the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Rovers. The Scouting programs continue to be active to this day. Improvements to the WI Hall were initiated, particularly to the basement rooms, washrooms, and storage rooms. Donated $2,500 (June ‘76) to this joint project, however, to accommodate upstairs renovations this was increased to $7,000 (August ‘76). In subsequent years, the Chase Lions assisted in acquiring the mirrors and balance rail, and purchased and installed the stage curtains (approx. $2,000), and recently (‘91-’92), again in a joint venture contributed $57,000 for updating the kitchen (including the commercial gas stove and dishwasher), installing the upstairs air exchanger and addition to the upstairs facilities (storage room, handicapped washrooms, plus, meeting room, a cloak room and dispensing room. This addition was opened February 22, 1992. Back to 1976, other projects were; electricengraving tools were purchased and made available to the public throught the cooperation of the local RCMP Detachment; 2 tables were built for the Library building; a suspension tilt-board for therapeutic purposes was built; assisted Little League programs; purchased an audiometer for the South Central Health Unit ($400.00); contributed $500.00 to CNIB; purchased walkers; assisted burnt out families (2); contributed to Easter Seal House and so on - like flea markets with the Secondary School. More Lions Club History to be continued...
