Buzzy’s Rescue: A Happy Tale
A local doggy had a dangerously close call with a tight fitting pipe last week, but he made it out with the help of his family and neighbours. Vic and Donna Calvert’s small Jack Russell Terrier, Buzzy wandered off and was nowhere to be found. The family searched high and low for Buzzy on the Calvert’s property on VLA Road before giving up the search. Buzzy is 10 years old and is on medication for congestive heart failure, so the family assumed he had wandered off and sadly, passed away alone. The next day, Vic & Donna’s daughter, Candy Retson was out doing morning chores when she heard a faint whimper. She followed the muffled barking to a narrow drainage piped, that contained
Buzzy! He had been trapped overnight in the pipe. “Being a typical terrier, he loves to chase moles and mice but this time he ran into a drainage pipe and got totally stuck,” said Donna. The Calverts phoned Brian and Steve from Springhill Excavating who came straight over and began the rescue process right away. They uncovered the pipe and used a special sewer camera to measure how far Buzz was into the pipe so he could figure out where to cut it without hurting the dog. After about half an hour of work, Buzzy was free from the pipe. “We had quite a party when we got him out safely,” said Vic. The Calverts family wanted to thank Springhill Excavating for taking time from their busy schedule to help Buzzy!

Lobsterfest huge success! by Cavelle Layes
After months of planning, 200 guests filed into the Chase Fire Hall for a delectable dinner, and an afternoon of laughs. The Chase Firefighter’s association hosted their biggest fundraiser of the year, the second annual Lobsterfest, last Saturday, June 4th. The event was a huge success, with 215 lobsters being served and given away, and almost $400 in 50/50 money being won. The Firefighter’s association hosted a silent auction supported by a long list of donators. The auction brought in over $2000 to be put towards firefighter training as well as equipment. Without the many donators the auction would not have been possible, and all of the Chase Firefighter’s Association members are incredibly grateful. For a list of names of those who donated, please visited the Chase Fire Rescue Facebook page. The firefighters would also like to send out a very big thank you to the Lion’s Club who, on top of having a number of members attend the event, also donated the tables and chairs. The Lions have shown continued support of the Chase Fire Department, and have had a great impact on all of the members. The Chase firefighters are incredibly proud of the Chase community, and humbled by Firefighter L u c a s W h i t e serves Bill Tro u t o n a n d Brandan Br y ant lobster d u r i n g the 2016 Lobsterfest.
the support they have received. The event could not have been a success if it were not for the hundreds of people who bought tickets, who came out on their Saturday afternoon, had a few drinks, dined on some lobster, and a buffet of sides. They would like to thank their members, as well as their spouses and family who worked hard to make all the salads and sides that were served at the event as well as the delicious strawberry shortcakes. Feedback regarding the event, both good and bad, would be greatly appreciated. Members use this information to continue to improve the dinner, and know what to add, take away or simply continue with. All feedback can be sent to chasevolunteerfire@ gmail.com . The Firefighter’s Association has already decided to continue to host the event next year on June 3rd, however, do to the continued support and growth of the event, a larger venue will be used. Tickets will also be made available in a month’s time to give 11 months to purchase, or until tickets run out. For information on next year’s event, or pictures and information on the 2016 event please see the Chase Fire Rescue facebook page.

From the Archived Files of the Chase Lions Club Written in 2003, by Frank Shelest, Charter Member
Continued from previous issue... Development of 17 sites began, completed and after an official opening operated as a “dry” site - the Chase Lions RV Park. In the spring of 2003, full services were installed, e.i, water, power, and sewer. To date many letters and notes have been received from appreciative campers from all over the world. In the summer of .2002, another youth service grant was applied. for and received Eight young people and a supervisor repaired,.repainted and realigned the wharf at Memorial Park in Chase. Also in 2002, a hydraulic chair life was purchased for $3,500 (proceeds from the RV Park) for the Adult Day Care Centre. In the spring of 1996, a park was developed by the Chase Lions Club at the corner of 1st and Pine Street. In the spring of 2003, two benches were installed at the Chase Cemetery. Let’s not overlook the “other times” - like members of the Club attending Charter and Anniversary Nights at Barriere, Clearwater, Valemount, Mt. Olie, Kamloops Central, ValleyviewOverlanders, Savona, Kamloops Yellowhead, Salmon Arm Couples, Salmon Arm, Salmon Arm Monarch, Kamloops Paddlewheelers, North Shuswap, Brocklehurst Central, Sorrento, Logan Lake, just to mention a few. Some of the clubs mentioned above have since
disbanded, or changed their names. In 2000, the Octogenarian Service Award was established. It was presented to Lions who acheived 15 years of service, maintained an active membership status and were 80 years of age or more. The 1st three recipients were Alf Specht, Harry Sonnenburg and Roy Nore. In 2001 the Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship was adopted. Monies raised ($500 per Fellowship) is used to build an endowment fund for Lions Foundation of Canada (Dog Guide Programs). The award was in recognition of achievement and involvement in Lionism, in this case, the Charter Members and those of 30 years service or more. Namely Walter Christ, Harry Fast, Erwin Esslinger, Frank Shelest and Irv Mann. In 2002, a further 4 Lions were recognized - Stan Mills, Harold Lewis, Jim Bryson and Nick Baun. In 2003, Roy Nore, Rollie Phillips, Harry Sonnenberg and Bob Wiebe were honored. For future presentations, Lions who have shown leadership, achievement, involvement and maintained an active membership status for a minimum of 15 years will be considered. The Chase Lions Club celebrated its 35th Charter Anniversary on January 25, 2003 and continues to assist the less fortunate and to promote the community to become a better place to live. The End •
Pumpkin Spice Pancakes 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup whole wheat flour 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp each nutmeg, all-spice & ginger Pinch of sea salt 1/4 cup pure pumpkin purée 1 Tbsp maple syrup 1 cup almond milk 1-3 Tbsp butter for cooking Directions: 1. Heat a non-stick pan to medium/ medium-low and pre-heat oven to 200°F. You’ll place the pancakes on a baking sheet or plate in the oven to keep them warm while you cook.
2. In a mixing bowl combine the flours, spices, baking powder and sea salt together with a fork. Add pumpkin purée, maple syrup and almond milk, and whisk together until well combined. 3. Use a 1/4 cup for each pancake. Lightly butter the pan with some vegan butter. Scoop batter into the centre of the pan. Once it starts to bubble all around and the edges of the pancake are slightly cooked through, that’s when you flip it. It’s approximately 2 minutes per side. Be sure to adjust your burner temperature as you go as the pan will get really hot half way through. 4. Serve with more vegan butter and real maple syrup.

In July 2015, Microsoft offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7, 8 & 8.1. Prior to the release, Windows 10 was tested by actual users. Bugs were found, corrected and then an updated version was released for further testing. Since July, there have been continued improvements via Windows Updates. The latest version is stable, secure and user friendly. Microsoft has gotten more aggressive with “pushing” users to the new system. The upgrade is considered a “recommended” update, whereby automatically updating PC’s to the new system. A Windows Update setting allows people to decide which updates will arrive to their computers. Microsoft has realized that people are changing their settings to only allow “recommended” updates so they have changed their settings to catch this force the update. The constant notification from the system tray is an annoyance. The “Get Windows 10” popup that happens is yet another trick to force the update. Clicking the red ‘X’ to close the popup now agrees to a scheduled upgrade rather than rejecting it! Microsoft is offering the upgrade for free, but only until July 29th. Windows 10 is more secure that its predecessors. The lifecycle of Windows 10 will provide support until 2025. Windows XP expired over 2 years ago, Vista will expire next year, Windows 7 in 2020 and Windows 8 in 2023. Windows 10 security and support will be available for longer than the other systems. For
Windows 7 users, you get an additional 5 years of updates, Windows 8, two additional years. A frequently asked question is: “why is Microsoft trying to force the upgrade?” New software and hardware is initially configured for Windows 10, then made compatible with earlier versions. Manufactures must spend time and money to make their products work on various systems, and provide additional support with constant security fixes to older systems. Microsoft is pushing for the upgrade in order to concentrate on one system. Thereby, resources can be focused on innovation and product improvement. A fair amount of spying is built into Windows 10. Some settings are easily found and can be turned off, whereas other settings are hidden deeper and require advanced methods to turn them off. At inTechrity, we can run specialized software to rid the system of the spying and ensure your privacy and security are left intact. If you’re not ready to take the plunge, you can take advantage of the free upgrade by updating your system now and then you can restore it back to the current version. This will allow you to upgrade to Windows 10 at a later date when it fits your needs. Contact us to schedule your upgrade to Windows 10. 250.679.7744 stefan@inTechrity.ca www.inTechrity.ca
Village of Chase - Sewer Line Flushing Please be aware, the Village of Chase is currently conducting flushing of all sanitary sewer lines in the community areas on the northwest side of the train tracks-areas including Pine Street, Willow, Arbutus, Lakeshore, Second Avenue etc. We recommend that you place an old towel over your toilet bowls and close the seat and lid or cover the bowl with other material (plastic for instance). In the rare
case where pressure causes the fresh water in your toilet bowl to bubble out, the towel or other material will prevent any spills. Flushing is occurring during the day time (7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) for the rest of this week including Friday, and into the following week, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (June 13, 14, 15)
