Painting Ladies Support Youth Bowlers
e would like to extend a very big Thank You to all the wonderful ladies who came to Village Lanes this past Saturday night to participate in our Paint Night. A large portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Village Lanes Bowling Club, which includes our Youth Bowlers in Chase. The bowling club pays for all tournament entry fees, travel to out of town events, accommodation at these events if necessary, and team uniforms each year. We are just a tiny 8 lane centre but we also belong to two amazing associations (Bowl BC and Bowl Canada). Because we belong to the Bowl Canada association, it means that our youth bowlers are a part of “Youth Bowl Canada” and get the opportunity to participate in numerous programs along with thousands of other children across Canada. Youth Bowl Canada has a cresting program, where kids can obtain individual awards for high scores, perfect attendance, or special events that we hold each month. The kids also get the opportunity to
participate in the Youth Bowl Canada Championships. If kids are successful at all levels, they get to participate in the National Championships – held in a different province each year. While none of our Youth Bowlers have made it that far along, don’t write them off just yet. We have some amazing talent brewing in our Youth Program at Village Lanes. The kids are well behaved, great listeners, and so easy to coach – making them better and better bowlers each week. If you would like more information about potentially signing your children or grandchildren up for a youth b o w l i n g league at Village Lanes, don’t hesitate. It’s fun, it’s affordable, and it’s an amazing program.
We are all touched by the ones we have lost..... May we all take a moment to remember.

OPINION The Female as Prey by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Freelance Writer

Ongoing news stories about the harassment and assaults upon women and girls prompt the question, “Just when does a female, in the minds of some unsavory, self-absorbed men, cease to be someone’s daughter, mother, sister, wife or indeed a person—and become nothing more than a sex object?” What is missing in their psyche, in their morals, that leads them to believe they have the right to someone else’s body? I most certainly had “the talk” with my teen-age children, a boy and a girl, emphasizing that their body was theirs and theirs alone and that they had no right to that of others without consent and understanding—that my daughter must be aware of never compromising the safety of her person. Cold showers came into the discussion as well. I have huge problems with religious sects that “marry off ” or transport adolescent girls as young as 13 to service older men. Are such youngsters nothing more than vassals? And in the case of a disturbed, disgruntled, and revengeful male, violence is often their last resort to the point of homicide of a previous spouse and even their children. A recent mass murder in the United States purportedly was the result of former in-laws attending that church and the vindictive actions of a man who had been dishonourably discharged from the armed services for assaulting his wife and child. The assumed and misdirected power of the male over the female has always been something I considered grossly unfair and unwarranted—regardless of the history and even current cultural practices in various countries that subjugate women. I recall telling a fellow once that his anatomy did not make him my boss. There wasn’t a second date! Worked for me. Any discussion of this difficult topic must include the fact that there are spiteful women, although in a distinct minority, who unjustly accuse men of
inappropriate actions or assault. Most such cases are proven to be false and do not result in conviction, although they sully the reputation of the fellow involved to some degree. Ladies, you’re not doing the rest of us any favours nor helping the situation with these actions. The military, RCMP, and law enforcement agencies are rife with sexist, misogynist behaviour that has gone on for years. Women are left with no recourse when authorities ignore the barbarism within their ranks. And that brings me to the pervasive workplace harassment perpetrated by those in control, in power—and it’s not just in Hollywood where the “casting couch” has been a known entity forever— again, a situation in which the victim is re-victimized because she fears reprisal if she reports what’s taken place. Her livelihood could depend upon keeping quiet. She is inadvertently turned into an enabler for a sexual predator, unable to protect herself or other women from him. I am encouraged by the brave women who are coming forth accusing their attackers. Make no mistake, it is an attack. Harassment and assaults harm them physically, mentally and emotionally. Self-esteem is damaged and fear on many fronts is prevalent. This brings me to those who “blame” the victim. They too are culpable in perpetuating a sick facet of society. While women of all ages should consider what ‘message’ they are sending by their dress and actions, implying or stating that a woman brought it on herself simply leads to justification for an antagonistic male to carry out his dirty work. So what can be done? Well, a complete about-face on how to deal with “boys being boys” in which consequences are swift and effective. Certainly, counselling and rehabilitation need to be part of putting an end to such aggressive behaviour. Continued on next page...

OPINION
And those in charge, those with the ability to make change within an organization need to be open to listening to complaints, to investigating them, and adopting zero tolerance for all forms of harassment, whether it be denigration, assault, or attempts to exert power over the females on their staff. Women need to feel safe in coming forward without fear of retribution or labelling. Need to feel that they will be heard, whether the person to whom they are reporting an incident is a woman or a man. Yes, ladies, it’s time we stood up for each other. It’s time to stand firm within our
rights to live with freedom of person and without anxiety or distress over what a male might be contemplating. And where in this are all the good guys that we know? The great husbands, fathers, brothers, grandfathers and sons who are part of our lives? We need you to persist with us, to call out the perverts within the male population who are preying on the women you care about and love. Get angry with us! The status quo has been tolerated for far too long. It is now ending. It must end. It’s all about respect. Oh and by the way, #me too!

People ask about how to get their website onto page one of Google. Google website ratings are based on many factors which change daily. Your website must be submitted to Google to ensure that they are indexing (checking) your website. Google uses an algorithm (steps) in analysing websites. While Google does not make this algorithm public, there are factors that affect how Google will rate a website. Getting a website to page one is not a simple task. It takes a minimum of 6 months of monitoring and updates to see movement in rankings. In addition, the following steps can move your website in the proper direction: First and foremost is mobile friendly (responsive design). What does this mean? Whether you view a website on a 27” screen, 15” screen, 11” screen, tablet, or smart phone, the website should be formatted to each screen size. Google has made this a top factor in their rating algorithm. An easy way to check this, is to go to Google’s “Mobile-Friendly Test” page (https://search.google.com/test/mobilefriendly) and plug in your website URL. After analysis, you will receive a message indicating if your website is mobilefriendly. Second, you will want to check your page speed. This Google test analyzes the content of a web page, then generates suggestions to make that page faster. To test your
website, go to Google’s “PageSpeed Insights” (https://developers.google. com/speed/pagespeed/insights/) and enter your website URL. You will receive two ratings, one for “mobile” and one for “desktop”. In addition to the results, Google will provide you with optimized resources you can use on your website. Another factor is the content of the website. Google checks your website to determine if: the content is original; it is duplicated; it adds value; the images are appropriate and labeled correctly; it utilizes appropriate keywords or keyword phrases; the website URL’s are descriptive; proper coding is being used; quality of website backlinks; validity of website clicks; blogs and social media. There are also many other factors that contribute to Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The bottom line is there is no quick and easy way to get to page one of Google. There are many online sources that state that they can accomplish this for you. The techniques used are frowned upon by Google and once they catch on, they will black-list your website. SEO is a process that must be carefully examined for each website. If you are interested in an in-depth website analysis, or would like help improving your website rankings, please contact us on Facebook, Twitter, email or by phone.

ATTENTION EVERYONE IN CHASE AND SURROUNDING AREAS! Trans Canada Highways Upgrades will affect YOU! The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is hosting an Open House on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Village’s community hall to show the most recent designs for the Trans-Canada Highway upgrades along the corridor from the Chase-Falkland Road intersection at TCH to Jade Mountain at Mattey’s property. How will this affect YOU? Your BUSINESS? We need to hear from everyone who will be affected by the upgrades to the Trans Canada Highway along the Chase/Falkland Road – Mattey Hill corridor. At present we have three full access and egress points between PetroCanada and Mattey’s Hill. The proposals from the Ministry of Highways will reduce our access points significantly! This has serious impacts to our community! We need your voice! How will changes affect YOU? Think about the following in preparation for the meeting: Accessing the Highway: 1. How do you access the Highway to travel towards Kamloops now? How might you access with the upgrades completed and the current access points removed? 2. How do you access the Highway to travel towards Salmon Arm now? What about access once the changes are done? Accessing our Community: How do you get off the highway now to go home from Kamloops or Salmon Arm or Sorrento or Pritchard? How will you get off the highway to home once the changes are made? Traffic impacts inside Chase - Congestion What about INSIDE Chase once changes have been made to the way we access the highway and access our community? Can you think of potential bottlenecks and congestion that might occur because of the proposed changes to how we access our community or travel to the highway? Think about these issues for the immediate future, but also 20 years into the future when our population will be over 3000 – what will access and congestion look like then? The highway upgrades will be in place for 100 years, so we need to look ahead for our community! The opportunities for Chase as a tourism destination may become lessened if it is difficult for tourists to easily access our community – if there are less opportunities to come to Chase, we will lose tourism. The likelihood of highway travellers turning into Chase or even having time to CONSIDER visiting will be reduced if there are fewer access points and the motorists are travelling effectively 25 km/hour faster than they currently travel along the corridor. Your input is very important for the future of Chase – proposals will be presented about what impacts the highway upgrades will have on access points into and out of Chase along the highway. For more information, please contact Mayor Berrigan at 250.318.1318 or the Village Office at 250-679-3238 and ask for Sean or Joni.

HEAT AND POWER BACK ON submitted by Scott Koch
The trials and tribulations of operating, managing and coaching a Junior Hockey Team are many. There is the bottom line to worry about, there are line combinations to fret over and there are fantasies of lineups of fans anxiously awaiting entry into the Art Holding Memorial Arena. All doable if you provide an entertaining product, win or lose, for those able to spring some after tax dollars. So, prior to the weekend update, we provide a morsel of great news regarding the on ice component. Of the 20 teams in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League the Chase HEAT have the #1 Powerplay in the entire league. Not too shabby considering the team is currently playing 500 hockey, win one, lose one and on and on. A bright light of good news for locals, especially when the news cycle normally contains either bad or sad items for us to mull over.
Friday night the 3rd Chase played host to the #1 team in their Division, the Revelstoke GRIZZLIES. The Stoke popped in the scoring opener before Colton Nikiforuk evened things at 1-1, assisted by Kaden Black and Zachary Fournier. But the mad bears struck again, after the first it’s 2-1. In the 2nd the HEAT struck twice on the powerplay, Cory Loring from Pat Brady and Josh Bourne, and then Nikiforuk from Fournier and Grady Musgrave. In the 3rd the GRIZZLIES tied it up before Bourne assisted by Ryan Okino and Loring regained the lead. However the Mountain Mecca boys came right back to make a contest of it late in the game. The icing for Chase fans arrived when “Bourne again” on the man advantage popped in the winner from Okino and Brady. Three markers on six chances on the extra man advantage. Then its off to the Houseboat Capital to meet the majestic fowl, the

EAGLES. For some reason these two combat units play “mellow” hockey during their meetings. By games end the fowl had left a foul taste in the mouths of the HEAT. The end result a 3-1 win for Sicamous, with Brady on the powerplay from Okino and Kolten Moore in the 2nd being the only puck to find the net. Maybe the wrestling with the bears knocked the starch out of their socks and resulted in no sign of soaring with the EAGLES. The bit of HEAT produced in this one was like a candle blowing in the wind. The HEAT face the Kamloops STORM on Tuesday the 7th prior to a home and away duel with the EAGLES, game time 7:00 pm at AHMA on Remembrance Day, Saturday the 11th. A special ceremony will be held prior to the opening faceoff. LEST WE FORGET.
