PHOTOGRAPHIC PRESENTATION By Loretta Greenough

The North Shuswap Historical Society is once again giving a presentation on the history of the North Shuswap. This will take place on Sunday March 25th, at 2:00 p.m. in the North Shuswap Community Hall. Coffee and goodies will follow the presentation allowing for a lovely social.

Mark the date on your calendar and bring a friend. A number of Chase residents are either from the North Shuswap or have close connections to the North Shuswap. Hopefully you will be interested in coming.

The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove Daylight Savings or Losings I usually don’t get too involved in the daylight savings debate, but this round of clock changing has particularly felt harsh on my family’s schedule and my mood. The night after we sprung forward, I could not get to sleep and woke up exhausted. Anecdotal evidence (ie. other complainers) shows I was not the only one. So, how did this time-tinkering concept get started and does it make sense at all? Apparently Benjamin Franklin was the first to suggest some form of daylight saving time. Franklin noticed how Parisians slept in the morning after staying up by candlelight at night. Franklin noted in the 18th century that making better use of the sunshine could save the French economy 64 million pounds of candles! The formal switch to daylight saving time began in World War I, when Germany adjusted the clocks to save coal. Other nations followed suit during war time. Some 76 countries conduct the practice today. While lighting was the biggest use of electricity during that era, current energy uses are totally different. Heating and cooling consumes a much bigger percentage of energy now. We think nothing of turning on lights and using electronics whether the sun is up or not. When we wake up an hour earlier on chilly March mornings, we crank up our heaters. The energy saving concept seems dubious, and in fact, when Indiana decided to introduce DST in 2006, a study found that the measure actually

increased energy use in the state. It seems there are many studies currently in progress on DST, but completed, large scale studies are still minimal. The studies that are out there do not make a good case for DST though. Other studies link the lack of sleep at the start of DST to car accidents, workplace injuries, depression, and lack of productivity. The benefits seem to be that we are exposed to more natural light in a day and less artificial light. Studies have found that DST contributes to improved road safety by reducing pedestrian fatalities by 13% during dawn and dusk hours. Ok. Some suggest that the tourism industry profits from brighter evenings. Longer nights give people more time to go shopping, to restaurants, or other events, boosting the local economy. That’s important. Another study found an 7% decrease in robberies following the spring shift to DST. We could use 7% less robberies around here. I don’t know if the pros or cons win this one. My feelings of being tired, slow, groggy this week have culminated in this moment, where I am out of time and trying to be articulate. I would love to see all the evidence compiled sometime soon so we can collectively make a decision about whether this actually makes sense for us to continue on with. If not, can we all agree this is no reason to hang on to DST for sentimental reasons. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

submitted by Dick Hermann Why Chase, you ask. Our circumstances just before we moved to Chase were as follows: we had lived in Vancouver for the preceding 30 years, and had had more than enough of the hustle and bustle and wild traffic of the city; we had moved many times during my career in the construction and mining industries, and were looking to make our last move, to a place of peace and quiet; changing circumstances made it possible for me to do the work that I was involved in, from a place other than Vancouver. So we went looking for a place to retire to. I can give all kinds of reasons why we moved to Chase, but the prime reason was that our daughter and her husband live here. Even without some of the other attractions of the area, that reason alone would have been sufficient. But let’s look at some of the other attractions as well. The accompanying photo will show you many of the reasons why we came to Chase--particularly if you are able to view it in colour in The Sunflower’s Facebook presentation. Chase is in a truly magnificent setting, and it provides many opportunities to observe and enjoy the beauty in the world around us. Both my wife Mary and I grew up in the interior of British Columbia. Mary was born and raised in Kamloops, and lived there until she was 14, when she moved to Vancouver. I was born and raised near Gold Bridge, in the Bridge River Valley, and I also was 14 when we left there and moved to Smithers, where my father was resident engineer on the construction of the Smithers Airport. After Smithers we lived in Quesnel for a couple of years, for the construction of the Quesnel airport. Our familiarity with small town life in BC made it as an easy decision to move to Chase. Mary and I met when we were both attending UBC, both working toward Applied Science degrees—Mary in Nursing and myself in Civil Engineering-and we were married while I was still in University. Why Chase?

Immediately after I graduated in 1952, I accepted a job with the Aluminum Company of Canada at Kitimat, which was in the early stages of construction at that time. While I worked on construction, Mary was the first Public Health Nurse in Kitimat. We were there for seven years, and then started our many moves. When we moved into a house in Va n c o u v e r in1978, the year of our 27th wedding anniversary, it was our 22nd different address. In the construction industry, one goes where the work is. Some of the moves were just a few miles, but some were more significant, like Kitimat to Switzerland,

Switzerland to Montreal, Montreal to New Zealand, etc. So we had had enough of moving and were looking for the final one. We lived in our home in Vancouver for 30 years, and by that time had had more than enough of the big city life in Va n c o u v e r , so when circumstances arose in 2011 that made it possible for me to complete the work I was involved in at the old Craigmont Mine in Merritt, from a location outside of Vancouver, it did not take long to make the move to Chase, to our 23rd different address in 60 years of marriage. And there was another reason for

moving to Chase that I did not remember until after we had moved here. When walking along a street in Chase, everyone you meet smiles and offers some friendly comment such as “Good Morning” or “Enjoy the sunshine.” Vastly different from walking the streets of Vancouver. I could go on, but enough is enough. We are here in Chase, and loving it.

He leaves behind to mourn-remember him: Willy Gosse, partner of six years, brothers Terry, Garry (Bernice), David (Grace) his sisters Dorothy, Debbie and Lori (Nancy) , his beloved pets Frisky, Fred, Maggy and Holly, as well as numerous extended family and friends. Rob was a BIG man with a BIG heart, known locally in Chase for ;his kind, generous and gentle character, especially soft hearted with the frail, elderly and handicapped with whom he worked with most of his life. Rob contributed his free time to helping charitable events, donating hundreds of hours to numerous organizations, the Chase Fire Department, The Chase Lions Club, and was a proud member of Legion #107. We will miss his deep belly laugh and his teasing nature. Res t in peace Robbie. Today I donated a laptop, a smartphone and $500 to a poor guy. Can’t express the happiness I got when I saw him putting the knife back in his pocket Just found out I’m colorblind. The diagnosis came completely out of the purple.

Once the meat is cooked, add chopped pepperoni, add the tomato soup, water and pizza seasoning. Reduce to low and let simmer. While the meat and sauce are simmering, preheat the oven on broil and spread the butter evenly on each English muffin half. Sprinkle with garlic salt. Pop these under the broiler on a cookie sheet for about 2 minutes or until they begin to brown just on the edges. Take out of the oven and top each English muffin with about 1/4 cup of the meat and sauce mixture. Top each of those with the cheese. Place back under the broiler for another 2-3 minutes or until the cheese turns golden brown and bubbly.

This is top secret. This is bottom secret. I’ve started a dating site for chickens... It’s not my full-time job, I’m just doing it to make hens meet. What’s it called when a King and Queen have no children? A receding heir line... I saw a post on Craigslist that said: Radio for sale, $1. Volume knob stuck on full. I thought to myself, I just can’t turn that down.

The Darndest Things, Right?

submitted by Shirley Papiz The majority of the volunteers in the One to One Reading Program at Haldane are retired folks but in the fall session we had some Chase Heat hockey players reading with the kids. Just wanted to share this observation from one of my sweet children in the session on Tuesday when she said: “How come when my brother came to reading he had Chase Hockey Players read to him and all we get is old people!”
