History of a Busy Block on Okanagan Avenue

N

by David Lepsoe and Carolyn Parks Mintz

ew houses are going up on a stretch of one of our streets that still contains heritage homes from the early days of Chase, when the Adams River Lumber Company laid out the town site and began selling home lots. Here’s a look back. 841 Okanagan Ave was purchased on August 12 in 1908 by J.H. Price. An old photo shows that this was at one time a butcher shop, which makes sense as this site is on the corner of Okanagan and Coburn Street. Coburn was the entrance to Chase at the time.

John Westburg purchased the adjoining two lots in 1908 which is now civic address 833 Okanagan Ave. John was a member of the Chase band and played the E flat bass. A Chase Tribune article of September 19, 1913, reads “John Westberg is an example of how folks will tire of even the best of things, he is weary of Chase and is going to spend the winter in Minneapolis like some others who have left Chase. Johnny says he is not coming back.” 829 Okanagan, the lot where a new house is presently going up, was purchased by George Hegg in 1908. Cont’d on page 3....

Campfire Ban On

Effective at noon on Thursday, July 26, 2018, campfires will be prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre’s jurisdiction. The BC Wildfire Service is dealing with several large fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre as a result of lightning storms that moved through the Okanagan last week. Hot and dry conditions are expected to continue. The fire danger ratings in the Kamloops Fire Centre are now generally “moderate” or “high”, but these ratings will likely increase this week.

These prohibitions apply to all public and private land unless specified otherwise (for example, in a local government bylaw). Please check with local government authorities for any other restrictions before lighting any fire. Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.

Historic Buildings in Chase August Hegg with his two adult sons, Arthur and George, had come to Chase to set up and work in the Mill (Adams River Lumber Company). August was in charge of building the 17-kilometre long Bear Creek log flume. He and his crew of 70 men started construction of the flume in 1912 and it was completed in 1913. A Chase Tribune article May 10, 1912 reads “August Hegg took a crew of drivers upon lower Adams River (sic) on Monday.” August returned to Minnesota around 1913. Arthur left around 1914 at the outbreak of World War I and joined the US Army. After correspondence quit arriving in Minnesota from his son George, August came back to Chase to see what happened to George. Apparently, he had been in a serious accident and never spoke again. August and George returned to Minnesota in 1916, where George died in 1916 or 1917 from his injury. 820 Okanagan was purchased by Ed. O. Anderson on June 10, 1909. The Chase Tribune of May 10, 1912 reports “Mr. Ed Anderson as being forced to give up his lumber piling contract at the mill due to

ill health.” Ed also owned a lot behind the vintage Scatchard house, presently the location of The Chase Sunflower. Jas. F. Reads purchased 821 Okanagan in 1909. There where many “Reid’s” living in Chase at that time, so this name may have been misspelled in the records. The lot for 817 Okanagan Avenue was purchased in 1909 by Etta J. McBryan, a relative of Alexander McBryan, who arrived in the area about the same time as Whitfield Chase. Alexander and Whitfield became partners in the cattle business. Alexander’s land was where we now call the VLA Flats. The two lots at 813 Okanagan at the corner of Chase Street were purchased by Louis Land in 1909. During construction of the Land home, in 1910, he and his wife and children lived in a tent on the property. Louis Land and family moved to the Chase Creek area to a homestead in late 1913 where he farmed. Registries indicate the family was still there through to 1938, but was not on a registry in 1944.

in Chase, BC. The Polaris ATV was recovered in Kamloops. On July 22nd, 2018, the Chase RCMP received a report of a theft from a vehicle which occurred between 1:00pm and 3:00pm in Scotch Creek, BC. While the occupants of the vehicle were at the beach suspects smashed the window of the vehicle to steal a wallet, purse and cell phone from within. The phone was located on the side of the road in Lee Creek, BC. Chase RCMP Detachment has received several reports of similar thefts occurring in the parking lots of local parks and hiking trails. The Detachment would like to encourage the public to properly secure their property and to not leave valuables in your vehicle. On July 23rd, 2018, Chase RCMP received a report of a theft of a golf cart from a residence on Hysop Rde, Chase, BC. The electric golf cart, green in colour with sheepskin seat covers, was stolen overnight from the driveway of the residence. Anyone with any information regarding this investigation, or any other crime, is asked to contact the Chase Detachment at (250) 679-3221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The Chase RCMP Detachment has noted an increase of thefts in the area with the arrival of summer. The detachment would like to assure the community the levels of theft in the area remain typical of similar sized communities. The public is encouraged to take steps to prevent thefts such as: • securing and locking property • removing vehicle keys • ensuring yards are well lit motion sensor lights are an energy efficient solution. • Record serial numbers and licence plates of your vehicle and property. This will aid police in recovering your property should it be stolen OTHER On July 7th, 2018 at 1:20 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of suspicious

males, one of which was carrying a handgun, walking near the Trans Canada Highway on the ramp to Highway 97. Police responded, located the two males and placed them under arrest. The gun was found to be an air gun which was turned over to police to avoid further complaints. The males were released on scene with no charges. On July 20th, 2018, Chase RCMP received a report of a disturbance in a parking lot near Chase Street in Chase, BC. Police arrived to find the cause of the disturbance was the owner of the private parking lot had placed a boot, a vehicle immobilizing device, on a vehicle that had parked, without authorization, in the lot. The owner of the vehicle paid a fee to the lot owner and the device was removed. The Chase RCMP Detachment is aware the lot owner placing the immobilizing device on vehicles has become a concern with residents in the community. Crown Counsel has been contacted and police have been advised there is nothing criminal in the lot owner placing the immobilizing device on vehicles parked on his private property. Any concerns around this matter would need to be settled in small claims court or through civil litigation. On July 20th, 2018 at 8:35 pm, Chase RCMP received a request to assist with a boat adrift and two people in the water near Anglemont, BC. The owner of the boat fell overboard, without a life jacket, while the boat was stopped. Due to the rough waters the boat quickly began to float away from the man. Three passengers in the boat were unfamiliar with boat operation and unable to get the boat started to retrieve the owner. One passenger grabbed a life jacket and jumped into the water swimming to the owner. The two men shared the life jacket to keep them both afloat. Residents on the shore recognized there was an emergency, and in typical North Shore fashion, organized a rescue. The men were provided first aid and the drifting boat was pulled ashore with everyone safe.

“Daily Life” submitted by Dick Hermann

Did you ever think that daily life in Chase could be affected by current events in the Middle East? Let me tell you how it happens. The two little girls in the accompanying photograph are Grace and Esmée, two of our great-granddaughters, who are currently visiting us from their home in Aldershot, UK. Their mother is our granddaughter Jennifer, and their father is Dwain “Olly” Oliver. But it is not the family that is of prime interest, except to Mary and me, who are delighted to have an extended visit with them. But the story behind their visit, has international involvement. The girls’ father, Olly, is a veteran of 18 years in the British Army. A Warrant Officer Second Class of the Grenadier Guards, he has many times been deployed to the Middle East as part of the British contribution toward the maintenance of some stability in that part of the world. In mid-July, Olly was posted to Iraq for a sixmonth assignment as part of the UK’s contribution to military intervention against Daesh in Iraq and Syria—incidentally, he will have some Canadian Forces personnel quartered in his camp. Jennifer and her girls have come to Chase, to stay with us for the duration of Olly’s posting. That’s right—six

months. Since their arrival on June 30, Grace has already been participating in the Summer Camp Programme at the Rec Centre, and arrangements have been made for her to attend Grade One at Haldane Elementary School when it opens in the fall. After Olly’s assignment has been completed, it is expected that he will be granted some leave, which he is planning to use to come and spend Christmas with us in Chase, following which he will take his family home to the UK. So here we have a situation where the daily life in small town Chase is directly affected by current events in the Middle East. It is indeed a small world. As an aside, the town of Aldershot UK is of interest to me personally because I can remember my father telling me in the mid-1930’s about having been stationed there in the Canadian Army during the First World War. Also of personal interest is the fact that my brother, J. K. (Jock) Hermann, was killed in the Middle East in 1961 while serving in the RCAF, supporting the United Nations peacekeeping mission that was on-going at that time.
