The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove Writer’s Regret I started this “Editor’s Spot” a few issues baffled and perhaps insulted. I was even
ago knowing full well that it was going to be a big challenge for myself. Coming up with a unique, interesting bit of content every week is hard enough, even before the nagging self doubt starts to kick in. Am I talking about myself and my family too much? Or being too cryptic? Should I try to be “professional” or personal? Other humans are actually going to READ these very words?! I am pretty sure, my main writing hangup goes back to my cringe -inducing high school yearbook write-up which has faintly haunted me for a decade and a half. Let me set the scene for you: small town with a small school (but bigger than Chase), where you basically know who everyone is. We phrased our yearbook write-ups in third person, but obviously we all wrote our own. In addition to some cliché parts, my write-up included something to the effect of “Kelsey played hockey... hope you guys will manage without your STAR player.” <--That is the part that makes me cringe right there. So, to explain, I was not THE very best player on my team, but I certainly wasn’t the worst. My attempt at selfdeprecation went totally awry, and I can only imagine, left my teammates
the editor of the yearbook, so I really had no excuse. Ooh. You would think this little slip would have been bumped from my embarrassment queue with other awkward moments over the last 15+ years, but there is something about the immortalizing nature of black and white, in print goofs which I apparently find to let go. At it’s core, it’s a fear of being misunderstood that I work through with trepidation when publishing content from my own point of view. I have an idea though; maybe I can clean the “word-skeletons” from my closet once and for all by re-writing my yearbook blurb. I always wished I had just kept it simple with a cool, timeless quote or something. Let’s try this: Whew. I Kelsey actually feel Snelgrove a lot better! “We’re all I am feeling born naked and the rest g e a r e d up for this is drag” RuPaul challenge now. I honestly don’t know where this column is going to take us, dear readers, but thank you so much for coming along for the ride.

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: WHAT IS TRUTH? by Tyler Harper
What is truth? This question was asked 2000 years ago by Pontius Pilate and it is still asked today. This isn’t a question I hear alot these days, the nature of truth doesn’t peculate around cups of coffee and it isn’t the sort of thing discussed in the checkout at the grocery store, but this question seems to be all around us these days. Maybe the question today is “What is fake?” Truth in a way is bound to its opposite, falsehood. Something can’t be true and false at the same time. Think back to grade school or that drivers test, a question was either true or false, there was no third option. Something can’t be true and be a false at the same time. But we all know that life isn’t as simple as a pencil marks on a page. Tests and exams are only shadow the real world, they are far the full details of life. Living day to day usually means shades of grey, of making the best of the situation around us. A pundit’s certainty evaporates in a practitioners life, but this doesn’t mean that truth ceases to exist. When I step on a scale, roughly the same number shows up every day. Boxing day, after a series of feasts, that number was a little higher, while after a period of healthy
eating and chasing after my two year old that number is a little lower. But just because the number on the scale, the number of the Kilograms changes, this doesn’t change what a Kilogram is. A Kilogram is defined as being equal to the mass of the International Prototype of the Kilogram — which also goes by the cooler name of “Le Grand K”— housed in SaintCloud, France. Le Grand K is a Kilogram and a Kilogram is defined by Le Grand K. I might have a second helping of Mashed potatoes and gravy, but Le Grand K doesn’t change. I might doubt my bathroom scale, but I can’t doubt Le Grand K, it is the Kilogram. The question of truth isn’t answered on the bathroom scale, it is found in the standard. The question is when you live your life, what is the Prototype or standard of truth? Do you have a Grand K in your life? Is it a person, a place, or a thing? Is it a feeling inside of you? The answer to Pilate’s question may have just been standing right in front of him and that this answer is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Tyler (TylerJRHarper@gmail. com) is the Pastor of Chase Evangelical Free Church, 295 Shuswap Ave, Chase, B.C.

To: Residents of Chase Re: Potential Option to Re-Open Chase Primary - CHASE OUTDOOOR LEARNING SCHOOL Chase Primary has remained closed for a number of years. Despite the tireless efforts of the Community, the Building still remains vacant. I believe there is a viable option for reopening the School. However, I stress that the Community of Chase/SD73 would have to determine if this suggestion is possible. Chase Primary is an ideal location for a SD 73 Outdoor Learning School. A School of Choice, for all families with Elementaryaged children, residing in the KamloopsThompson School District. The Salmon Arm School District has recently approved the opening of such a School. The Site happens to be a vacant Elementary School. Over 80 students have committed to enroll. A District Survey indicated 522 families expressed an interest to enroll. There is strong interest for this Educational Option. Please study the North OkanaganShuswap SD83 Website. An excellent initial Resource to learn about and understand the philosophy and vision of Outdoor Learning Schools. Following are just a handful of reasons why I believe this is feasible: • Vacant School Building • No such School exists in SD73. The McQueen Lake Outdoor Learning Centre is structured for “short-stay” School visits only. A “stand-alone” School would further compliment the Centre. • Close proximity to outstanding 4-season land and water-based outdoor learning opportunities. This, all within Secwepemc Territory. First Nation Bands would serve as critical Partners. Also, my belief is that First Nations would support the opening of an Outdoor Learning School. • The new Whitfield Subdivision, combined with the opening of the School, has potential to draw young families to
Chase. Also, Teaching and Support Staff would consider re-locating. Potential to change the next population census from a negative to a positive? Of course, the amazing 4-season “outdoor lifestyle” is a natural attraction. • 4-laning Kamloops – Chase. Now only 30 plus minutes. Creative transportation options could be explored to minimize costs. • Possible reconfiguration of Chase Schools? An opportunity to consult with District Staff on this option. • Positive economic impact for Chase • Support for Chase Action Plan. Besides support from SD73, approaching the Working Committee in Salmon Arm School District could result in support, resources, and valuable feedback. In closing, my hope is that the Community will embrace this possibility by establishing a “Working Committee” to determine if such a School would be supported in Chase and Kamloops-Thompson School District. At this time, I am unaware of any other Options brought forward to the Community. Moving forward …..Residents need to visualize what it would be like…Vacant Chase Primary, full of children. Having fun learning in their “new” School. CHASE OUTDOOR LEARNING SCHOOL. Wouldn’t this be a wonderful “Gift” for Chase? Superintendent of Schools, SD 73 recommends the following process. • Gather all Parents within SD 73 interested in this Educational Option. • Prepare a thorough Plan, including number of interested Parents and number of committed Parents. • Once finalized, ask to make a Formal Presentation to the Board of Education. Brian David Former Resident , Teacher & Business Owner

Obituary Natalie Elizabeth Ewanyshyn December 30, 1981 - January 20, 2018 Our dear Natalie has left us. Survived by her father Daniel Ewanyshyn, her mother April Sheehan (and Darrel Sirr), her sister Rita Ewanyshyn, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and many, many good friends and acquaintances. Predeceased by her grandparents, Michael and Dorothy Ewanyshyn, and Eugene and Eileen Sheehan. Natalie was the coolest cat around; a gifted artist with a sharp wit and keen fashion sense. She also had a great appreciation of the arts; visual, performing, and literary. She loved her friends and family, gardening, and making all kinds of art. She also loved animals... cats especially. Nat was born in Chase BC and lived there until 1989 when the family moved to Vernon BC. She went to Beairsto Elementary and upon graduating from VSS in 1999 moved to Vancouver where she made her home (with a few moves back and forth to Vernon over the years). Strathcona was her favourite Vancouver neighbourhood and where she resided for the past few years. I am sure she would want to remind all of her friends to always have someone they can count on present if they are going to indulge in opiates. It is too much of a risk not to. Her death illustrates that risk perfectly. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In the meantime, remember her. Live your life fully. Celebrate each day and hold your loved ones close.

Easy Honey Garlic Chicken Sticky and Easy Honey Garlic Chicken made simple, with the most amazing 5-ingredient honey garlic sauce that is so good you’ll want it on everything! 6 chicken thighs, bone in or out Salt and pepper , to season 2 teaspoons garlic powder, to season 6 cloves garlic , crushed 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup water (or chicken broth) 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon soy sauce Instructions Season chicken with salt, pepper and garlic powder; set aside. Heat a pan or skillet over medium high heat; sear chicken thigh fillets or breast fillets on both sides until golden and cooked through. FOR BONE IN THIGHS: Reduce heat after A man with a wooden eye is at a dance.. During a slow dance, he can’t find a partner to dance with him. He sees from the opposite side of the dance floor a girl with a large nose. Seeing that she is also without a dance partner, he makes his move. He approaches her and is frank with her, asking “Would you dance with me?” Filled with excitement, she yells “Would I?!” Without missing a beat, the man retorts: “BIG NOSE BIG NOSE BIG NOSE!!!”
searing on both sides, cover skillet with a lid and continue cooking until the chicken is cooked through, while turning every 5 minutes until done. Alternatively, see notes for oven method. Drain most of the excess oil from the pan, leaving about 2 tablespoons of pan juiced for added flavour. FOR SAUCE: When chicken is done and cooked through, arrange chicken skin-side up in the pan (if cooking with skin); add the garlic between the chicken and fry until fragrant (about 30 seconds). Add the honey, water, vinegar and soy sauce. Increase heat to medium-high and continue to cook until the sauce reduces down and thicken slightly (about 3-4 minutes). Garnish with parsley and serve over vegetables, rice, pasta or with a salad. I’m really good at stuff until somebody watches me do that stuff. -It is what’s inside that matters - the fridge is a perfect example. -Whoever said “nothing is impossible” clearly never tried slamming a revolving door. -Promises are like babies… They’re fun to make but hard to deliver.
