JUST SAYIN’ A Column by The Old Cowpoke
Hibernate or Percolate?
Come late last Fall you could’ve been faced with a couple of decisions: either take a few winter months off and tuck into an overstuffed couch for a Chocolate Oreos’ pig-out whilst Netflix binging OR to start in on something you’ve been secretly but seriously mulling over for some time and then move to the early planning and doodling stages of developing your new direction for the upcoming year. I guess you could equate that with coming to a crossroads then making a turn on the road less travelled. In this case, Loakin Bear Creek Road. Friends of mine have taken the right hand direction and are now well past the planning and doodling stages and have begun the process of structuring a new business venture that will undoubtedly take them far along the other road from their earlier career choices. They’ll also enjoy ample opportunity to use all their
years of acquired business skills and hands-on experiences in the process. In the works are the organizational logistics and hiccups normally associated with any geographical move plus the gettingto-know-you challenges of a relocation. Their new Wedding – Special Events enterprise bucket-list was substantial: to secure a sizeable parcel of property well-located visa-vise highway access relatively close to their target market, and an all-important support commercial infrastructure. All was to equal an incredibly welcome display for visiting guests. And yes, all had to be within a budget that could early on realize a reasonable return-on-investment. Their goal of establishing a Wedding and Special Events venue with all the horns and whistles was formidable and after checking off a myriad of must-dos their research brought them to this part of the Shuswap community.
When brainstorming over the past couple of months they soon came to realize that the new biz could well morph into big biz and while developing a new Shuswap enterprise it could fit well with those similar and already established. I uncovered a number of attractive offerings in the Wedding – Special Events industry that shared this part of B.C., offering a wide variety of locations, services and an eye to customizing a budget. Their country-style venues were imaginative and from what I’ve gathered most of the operators go the extra mile to look after their clientele. Since my Little Creek Ranch friends will be joining a number of similar thinkers in the Wedding venue business I’m thinking it might be a terrific marketing opportunity for all to informally join together to promote the general area, share their challenges, have each other’s backs and scratch them too… just sayin’.

Wide Range of Opportunities at Education Center by Kelsey Snelgrove
Soon you may be seeing an exciting addition to the downtown core, one with a focus on inclusive and practical education. "We are in the works with securing a location in Downtown Chase where we will be able to hold our Highschool classes and looking at opening an afterschool ‘clubhouse’ for youth," said Ann-Marie Hampel, Classroom Coordinator/ Cooperative Education Coordinator for the Neskonlith Education Center. Registration for new students for the Spring Semester is now open and there is a draw where a new registrant will win a Chromebook! "Our registration is open for either high school students looking at completing their Dogwood, adult students looking at upgrading and anyone looking at trades upgrading or enrolling in the TRU trades programs that we offer," said Ann-Marie. They also offer in-house on-hands courses of Food Studies, Physical Education and Cultural Courses. The Foods class has just started a Not-for-profit Catering Company called Nez-Rez Meals Catering where they
are bidding on jobs within the school community and learning hands on practices of Meal and Menu Planning, Prep, Budgeting, Cooking and Serving. "Everyone is eligible to register with our school, indigenous and nonindigenous, youth or adult. We offer school courses like Math and English at every level along with other courses like Photography, Cosmetology and Forensics through Distance Education. We have Teachers and Instructors on site to help students with their studies, to answer questions and help with course work," said AnnMarie. Call 250-679-2963 or email NecReception@ neskonlithec.ca to register soon, as the new semester starts January 27th.

CHASING THE FRONT RUNNERS submitted by Scott Koch
Ok, ok, ok…maybe two weeks of pleading worked to increase attendance. More likely the weekend Atom Tournament plus fans from the visiting Columbia Valley ROCKIES placed 350 or so butts in the Chiropractor friendly plastic things that act as seats. We will go with the latter and recognize the significant contribution to HEAT coffers! But let’s back up to the middle of last week and recount a 4 all tie versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. The
hosts 3rd in the Doug Birks Division versus the visiting HEAT, 2nd in the 5 team pack. A tame event relatively speaking when it comes to wrangle tangles between these two teams. 4 goals in the 1st period, Jayden Russell less than 5 minutes in from Hayden Wiebe and Colton Nikiforuk commenced the scoring. 100 Mile then had a pair cross the red line to take the lead. With 1:16 left and the HEAT killing a penalty Wiebe was sprung loose by Caleb Biensch and Danton L’Heureux, after 1

it was 2-2. In the 2nd stanza 3 counters slid past the red, WRANGLERS starting things off. Jacob Biensch pulled Chase even assisted by Evan Vinterlik and Brandon Gremaud. That was followed by Gavin Mattey twitching the twine from Cameron McKenzie and Breckin Erichuk. In the 3rd the Cariboo crew tied the game at 4-4, a pair of 5 minute periods of overtime made no difference and each team left with a single point. Friday night the 17th in front of the aforementioned 350 plus, strangers came to the Chaos Castle in Chase. The last time the Columbia Valley ROCKIES had made their way to the Art Holding Memorial Arena was early in 2015 during the 2014-15 regular season. Not a soul in attendance had a clue how this evening’s entertainment would end, regardless of stat’s and standings. Chase had a slight advantage as they sat in wait for the visitors who travelled from Invermere to meet the HEAT. In the 1st twenty minutes Jacob Biensch on the powerplay from Gremaud and Vinterlik placed the biscuit in the basket. That was followed by Corson Nordick on a breakaway from Marino Bordin and Caleb Biensch. The ROCKIES scored on the man advantage and after the 1st period it was 2-1. In the 2nd the outstanding performances of the goalies took center stage. Bretton Park for the ROCKIES and Vince Benedetto for the HEAT nullified any scoring. Late in the 3rd Nikiforuk scored on the powerplay assisted by Erichuk and Cam Watson. This game concluded a 3-1 win for Chase. Park for the ROCKIES faced 46 shots, allowing 3 goals, and Benedetto faced 23 allowing 1. Both tenders were recognized as the game stars for stellar performances on this night. The Chase HEAT with illness and injury impacting the roster have taken 7 of a possible 8 points over the past 4 games. Two veterans are on long term injury recovery and the sick bay reports those ill have lost 7 or more pounds in their convalescence. The remaining roster has found ways to continued success. Next at home contest, the Division leading Revelstoke GRIZZLIES this Friday the 24th at 7:00 pm. This well worth the price of admission rivalry is don’t miss top notch entertainment. On the 28th, Tuesday next week the rescheduled game between the Kamloops STORM and HEAT takes place at AHMA. The month ends with a Friday the 31st get together with the Osoyoos COYOTES at our Chaos Castle. Heat Beat: Chasing the front runners. Currently 6th overall in the KIJHL with 23 wins in 38 games, the HEAT continue to hunt down those teams mere points ahead of them. Breckin “Chuk” Erichuk sits quietly in 6th in KIJHL scoring, 2 points away from 2nd spot. The energized Nikiforuk (18th), steady Mattey (23rd), still hot Wiebe (30th), and injured Evan Hughes (34th). Shimmy on down to the shinny magic show this Friday with the kids, and socialize with friends and neighbours while enjoying grade A KIJHL action!
