Kittens Found In Taped Box by Cavelle Layes

A

rlene Stevens had been looking forward to a relaxing day off Saturday morning, when a call came in that would send her weekend in an unexpected direction. Soon after A&W opened for the day, Stevens received a call notifying her about a cardboard box that had been taped shut, and discarded on the side of the road, in the parking lot behind A & W. While the box appeared to be nothing but garbage at first glance, it actually contained three small kittens and a note. The kittens were taped shut inside the box and wrapped in a sheet.

The note left alongside the kittens requested that the finder help secure homes for the kittens, or relinquish them to the S.P.C.A. The note also indicated their neighbors were trying to kill the small animals, and cited this as the reason behind their actions. Stevens said she was heartbroken when she picked up the kittens. She arrive just in time for the kittens to be removed from their cardboard packaging. Stevens described the kittens as hungry, dehydrated, crying and shaking. “It was hot out,” Stevens said, also noting the dangerous location the kittens were left in. Continued on page 7 ....

Council Coverage Part II

CALL

Your Local Realtor

By Cavelle Layes

Chase Village council met last Tuesday, July 26th, to discuss a variety of topics including the electric fueling station and a food truck policy. Currently the Village of Chase is not charging for the use of electric fueling station located outside the Information Centre. However, Council members have now decided to adopt a new software program, recommended by BC Hydro, that will allow tracking and charge for, usage. The software program will cost about $260 a year to use, and the Village has agreed to sign an annual contract. The Village will now be charging a $2 session fee plus $0.35 per kWh each session. Councillors were unsure if this new fee would be enough to cover the cost of the software within the year, as there hasn’t been much tracking of the stations use. For this reason, the Council decided to bring the fee rate up again at a council meeting next year to look at how it is doing. It would be decided then whether a rise in cost would be needed. It was noted that since the station’s opening, it has been used a number of times. Next on the agenda was food truck policy within Chase. Councillors noted there has been some issues regarding food trucks being hosted at Memorial Park, as a result of the powering station. Mayor Rick Berrigan stated that while all food trucks with proper licensing should be welcomed, those who exceed the amount of power the park has to offer, need to be responsible for their own power source. Those operating a food truck would also need to purchase a business licence from the Village and ensure they are situated within allowed areas. Council decided the downtown area of Chase was not an appropriate location for food trucks, as it distracts from businesses who are trying to make a living year-round. However, Councillor Nancy Egely suggested an acceptation be made for special events such as Chase Country

Christmas, where a larger than normal crowd is congregating in the downtown area. Egely explained that in these circumstances the current businesses downtown might not be able to supply for the D entire crowd, and food SOL truck vendors should be allowed in the area. Council agreed with allowing a condition to be made on banning food trucks from D downtown, in the SOL case of a special event taking place. It was decided that proposed fees and charges for food trucks would be brought back to council at a later date. Council decided to grant the Chase Hamper Society’s request for free use of the community hall for Wally Churchill’s Hootenanny celebration. The Council decided the event was acting as a fundraiser for the Hamper Society and a worthy cause for the exemption of fee. It was noted that the Hamper Society would need to sign off on the insurance forms for renting the hall, and it would be them who will be responsible if anything happens. It would also be them who is responsible to ensure the community hall regulations are followed. The Council voted to allow Memorial Park to be used for Cornstock again this year, as well as granted them a licence to host a beer garden during the event. Councillor David Lepsoe will be helping with the raise a reader campaign and will be giving out newspapers for Kamloops This Week as part of the event. The council also voted to donate $500 to the cause. Berrigan voted to make September Literacy Month in Chase again this year. The quarterly financial report was

submitted to the council, and while Village staff were pleased with the results, some councillors had questions regarding a surplus in funds. Village staff informed the council they had received a grant which they were not expecting, resulting in the extra money. The grant is highly political, and varies in amounts from one year to the next. As a result, the Village staff does not depend on the money, as doing so in the past left them in trouble when low sums were granted. Village staff said that it is rare for the government to give the same amount two years in a row, and until last year, the grant amount had been getting lower and lower. While it is not expected that the money will still be there come the end of the year, village staff suggested if it were, it could at that time be moved to a surplus fund. Councillors heard from Chase Citizens on Patrol who were looking for full or partial reduction in costs for rental of the Community Hall in 2017, which would include the use of the hall for 6.5 hours per booking to allow set up and take down of the coffeehouse events.

42 Artists, 4 stages & 3 nights of excitement by Cavelle Layes

Music on the Lake isn't the only place to catch some talented musicians this month. With over 42 bands heading to Salmon Arm on August 19, 20, and 21 for the 24th annual Roots and Blues festival, you do not need to go far to catch some of the best concerts this summer. The event has been a long-standing source of entertainment in the Shuswap and only continues to get better each year. The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society work hard to present artistic and cultural events that enrich the fabric of their community. To do this they draw from musicians and artists alike from across Canada and the world. The festival began as a humble

endeavour, a stand-alone folk show. However, it has since grown into a major western Canadian outdoor event with four stages, and two days and three nights of music. The festival has helped boost the careers of some talented emerging artists and has showcased some top music ambassadors. On top of the wide-ranging concerts that are put on throughout the weekend, the festivals also puts on workshops. These allow artists from any band to collaborate together together in different ways to create something truly magical. Artists are able to draw inspiration from one another, and have often praised the event for the tools it has provided them. To make the workshops even better, they are all conducted live on stage, where audiences can gather and see how music is made, completely from scratch. This year, the weekend will see musical acts such as Delhi 2 Dublin, which combines sounds you would hear from traditional music in East India, to what you might hear in an Irish pub, as well as trademark sounds from other corners of the world. The talented band has managed to weave these unique pieces into something completely new and unheard of in any other band. Continued on page 13.....

Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts Submitted by Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts

Judging by the great turnout, the 2016 Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts at the Carlin Community Arts and Cultural Center, was a smashing success. Now in it’s thirty third year, the Festival drew four hundred and fifty one visitors who viewed the fabulous selection of art presented by the Shuswap’s artist and artisan community. The 10 juror’s choice awards went to the following artists: (alphabetically) Mella

Ashenbrenner, Larry Bell, Janice Cleland, Rosalind Crocker, Sherry Kalloch, Ellie MacKenzie, Judy MacKenzie, RaeLynne Robertson, Rebecca Shepherd, and Shirley States. The 2D Peoples Choice Winner was Judy MacKenzie for ‘Deadman Creek Gold’ painting, while the 3D peoples Choice award went to Larry Bell for his ‘Segmented Diamond’ wood bowl. Onsite art sales accounted for artists and artisans taking home their share of a total of nearly four thousand

dollars. Congratulations and a special thanks to everyone who entered a work of art to the Festival. Once again you have shown the Shuswap to be an active, vibrant, artist and artisan community capable of creating and sustaining a buzz within our region. We hope to see you all at the 2017 festival, Your Shuswap Lake Festival of the Arts Committee.

ADVENTURE TOURISM COULD BE CHASE'S NEW NICHE Treetop Flyer’s has marked its 5th year in business with the launch of a brand new attraction the Screaming Eagle Swing. The swing opened up for tourists and locals alike this season and has something to offer that few other adventure tourism sites have. Not only does the swing have you traveling heights of 100ft at speeds of 80 km/h with a hangover of 180ft, as far as the owners know, it is the only completely green attraction in Canada. The swing is completely off the grid thanks to solar panels and of course, gravity itself. While word is still getting out about the swing, Treetop Flyers has been nothing short of a success since their grand opening in 2011. We made multiple goals when we started all this, and we are happy to say we have met every single one,” co-owner Matt Lepp said. Lepp explained the business wanted to have a proactive impact on Chase, by bringing in tourists to help boost local economy and by employing locals among other things. Treetop Flyers began as a simple zip line course which took guests out to the beautiful scenery of not one, but two waterfalls. The zipline soon turned into a complete tourism site, with other attractions such as ‘the jump’ being added and more hoping to be included in the years to come. While the business does get some local traffic, its main audience is travellers. Both stay-cationers looking for fun within the Shuswap, as well as those from overseas, have all been stopping in to see what Chase has to offer. “We drive our groups through Chase’s downtown and explain what businesses are in the area and plug in the history of the village” Lepp said. “We try to promote Chase as much as possible. Lepp explains that many of their

guests have driven along this side of the highway, but never took the turn into Chase. However, after a quick trip through town with Treetop Flyers as their guides, guests have announced they will be soon returning the the Village. Lepp believes being able to give back to Chase in those small ways is one of the things they enjoy most about their business. Chase gave them the chance to succeed, and in return, their success is helping them to promote Chase. On top of their regular events, Treetop Flyers has also become creative with their packaging, and began offering night-time zip line passes during the full moons of summer. The events were quite popular and often sell out, so this year they have also added full moon swings to the mix. The zipline is open sevendays a week to anyone sixyears-old and over who fit the weight requirements. Lepp said they often have seniors who stop in for a ride on their zipline. Packages are available to combine all the attractions into one bundle, and groups rates are available fore 10- people or more. Despite being open every day at 10 a.m., the zipline remains busy all week long, and often book solid. Those who are hoping to try out the local attraction are suggested to call and book ahead. Treetop flyer’s employees are professionals, and are able to offer the quick training needed for guests to take on each attraction. Those who want to take part in all the events should expect to spend about two hours at the site. Spots for the August 19 full moon tours are filling up quickly. Those whowould like to take part should reserve their spot soon. This event is also open to anyone who meets the weight requirements. For more information on Treetop Flyers, or to book a ride, visit their website at treetopflyers.ca or call 1-866-343-6761.

need an immediate place to live from September 2016 until March 2017. The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. Being a billet family is a very rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important

that you are able to provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe comfortable environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. Mammogram Van comes to Chase

By Cavelle Layes

A van with life-saving capabilities will be rolling into Chase later this month, and reservation spots are quickly filling. On August and 18 and 19, the Mobile Mammography Coach will be stationed at 395 Brooke Dr. in the Safety Mart parking lot. The new coach is like nothing you have seen before. In February, The BC Cancer Agency released a new fleet of digital trucks. Compared to the older models, which required technicians to carry their equipment into public spaces such as gyms and arenas, the new truck has everything they need right inside. Essentially, the mobile unit is like a doctor’s office, equipped with a waiting area, changing room, and exam room all

within the truck. The new trucks have a wheelchair lift, and the testing is stored digitally as opposed to the previous film tests. From the time the Screening Mammography Program began in Feb

1992 until the 2014 annual report was released, the program had conducted over 5 million screenings, and detected over 220,372 cases of breast cancers. BC Cancer Agency officials believe the

mobile units are vital tools, allowing women in rural communities who would normally need to drive over an hour for a test, the chance to do so close to home. Mammogram screenings are life saving tools that can help detect cancer before women or their doctors can feel lumps or see visual changes themselves. This means making them accessible to more treatments early on, and possibly saving their life. All the tests done on the mobile units are conducted by trained and certified female technicians who have been through a quality assurance process with BC Cancer Agency. Continued on page 16...

Chase CornStock has something for all ages

Submitted By the Cornstock Committee

On August 13th Chase Memorial Beach will be the corniest spot in the Shuswap as Chase CornStock returns for its 7th year from 3pm-10pm. This year’s festival will feature live music on the CornStock Stage by local artists DAWsound (Tanner Dawson), Lindsay May, Sleepless Nights, the Jeremy Kneeshaw Band, and Eargazm. The Interior Savings Little Kernels Zone will once again host plenty of family fun activities such as crafts, games, face painting, and performances by the Rivertown Players. Over in the CornField Market guests will find fresh produce, delicious foods, unique gifts, information booths about local service groups, and of course, Chase’s world famous, hot-buttered corn! Christie Mickelson Photography will also be on site at the Farmers Foto Booth, where you can get a corny photo taken

and shared on our Facebook Page. For CornStockers 19+, there will be cold beverages and good company available in the Watering Hole, with a great view of the CornStock Stage and Little Shuswap Lake.

Project Play winner to be revealed After countless hours of organizing and planning, and thousands of votes, the Kraft Heinz Project Play winner will be announced Thursday, August 4th. Earlier last month it was announced that the Chase Skateboard Park project had placed in the top four slots of a nation-wide competition. The Project Play competition grants the grand prize winner $250,000 and $20,000 to the runners up. The society rallied locals together and spread the word near and far about the accomplishment, and prepared them for the voting frenzy that took place on July 25 and 26th. A 36-hour period that wore out the fingers of many eager Chase voters. People from across Canada announced their support for Chase through social media. Since then, the country has been waiting for the tallies to be made public.

Earlier last week a date was announced for the reveal, which will take place during the intermission of the BC Lions football game this Thursday. To celebrate the roller coaster ride of excitement, and offer a thank you to all those who have supported them through their journey, the Chase and District Skate Park Society is hosting a reveal party. The event will run from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Village Lanes Fun Centre. A free BBQ, KD, hot dogs and hamburgers will be supplied. The skate park wants to remind the community that no matter what the results of the contest is, they are proud of Chase. The skate park has made it into the final four, and as a result will be receiving some money no matter what, and the spirit the community has shown is an achievement of its own.

experience. Chase CornStock is completely volunteer run and is always happy to have new Volunt-ears join their team. If you are interested in volunteering head to their website and complete the quick form and a member of the CornStock committee will be in touch with you. Back for a second year is Chase's CornStar Challenge. Once again contestants will compete to claim the bragging rights of being Chase’s 2016 CornStar and win $100 for a local nonprofit of their choice. The CornStar Challenge has teams competing against each other in corn eating, corn husking, and cornstalk javelin. If you are interested in submitting a team, please see the website for an entry form. For a current schedule and more event information, please visit ChaseCornStock.com.

MUSIC ON THE LAKE – SUMMER MUSIC SERIES WEEK SIX – WOODSHED JAMS (FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE WEDDING

Submitted by Music on the Lake Committee

Woodshed Jams is a band from Lee Creek BC, led by Bill Rawn (guitar) and featuring Suzi Rawn (vocals, bass, guitar), David Balser (vocals, bass, guitar), Mary Lutjen (backup vocals), and Lorn McCausland (back up vocals, violin). Each of these musicians has a vast resume in the entertainment industry. Bill spent time in his 20's as a touring musician and nurtured Suzi's aspirations with music in the family, and have done many projects including a cross Canada tour, together… Suzi was on Canadian Idol in 2005 and spent years as a touring musician, while David has toured with many

bands playing drums, guitar and pretty much any instrument you put in front of him, as well as theatre and playing in local bands with Mary, while Lorn has got his hands in everything violin, including the Salmon Arm symphony, music camps in Sorrento and every band he can fit in his schedule. Knowing each other as family and jamming in an assortment of situations over the years decided to start a little jam night this past new year. Their sound is a folk/rock genre meant to sound as real, modest, and beautifully simple as being able to set up in a Woodshed like in the ol' days and just jam for the pure joy of music.

New truck has ability to save lives Continued from page 9 ....

Officials say it is important that the right technicians are operating the units, as most women who go for testing are already ner vous. Having a good r e l at i o n s h i p with your technician is an integeral part of the process, officials said, noting they want the experience to be as stressfree as possible. While everyone who reserves an appointment with the truck is required to have a primary doctor, those working with the program will help coordinate a doctor for patients who do not already have one. As long as there is a doctor who agrees to look after the patients needs, in the case that the tests come back positive, any woman can get tested. Women who are between the ages of 40- and 70-years-old are encouraged to get tested between every two and four years. Those over 50 have a higher risk of cancer and should be tested more frequently. Women who have a history of breast cancer, especially within the first generation, should be tested every year. Those going to an appointment are suggested to wear a two-piece outfit

with a shirt that can button down. This allows the guest to be tested without fully needing to undress. Women should also avoid wearing lotions, perform and deodorant during the day of testing as it can impact the test results. While coffee does not impact the test results, it can make a patient more uncomfortable and is suggested that it be skipped until after the appointment. The tests only take 20 minutes from the time a patient walks into the coach, until they walk out. The testing itself does not hurt but may feel uncomfortable for some women. The results of the tests will be mailed to patients, as well as their doctor, about 2-weeks after their testing. While Chase only has a few appointment slots left, those who miss the trucks this time can book ahead for December, when the truck will be back in the area. To book a free appointment, locals are asked to call 1-800-663-9203. More information is available on the BC Cancer Agency website, along with step-by-step videos of the test, and survival stories as a result of early testing, from people like you.

Village of Chase Garbage Reminder “Bins must be placed on the roadway, wheels next to the curb (if there is one), at least 3 feet apart and away from any other objects, eg; vehicles, poles, fences. The new garbage truck “arm” requires more space to work effectively. Bin lids need to be closed, do not overfill either type of bin. Ensure items in the recycle bin are in a large clear bag and/or that boxes are broken down.”

The new digital truck is just like stepping into a doctor’s office. With changing rooms, a waiting area and experts on site to conduct the tests, as well as top-of-the-line digital equipment. Openings in the newly launched truck are quickly filling in Chase.
