Look Up! Meteor Shower Peaks Aug 12 Known for its fast and bright meteors, the annual Perseid meteor shower is anticipated to be one of the best potential meteor viewing opportunities this year. The Perseids show up every year in August when Earth ventures through trails of debris left behind by an ancient comet. This year, Earth may be in for a closer encounter than usual with the comet trails that result in meteor shower, setting the stage for a spectacular display. “Forecasters are predicting a Perseid outburst this year with double normal rates on the night of Aug. 11-12,” said Bill Cooke with NASA’s Meteoroid

Environments Office in Huntsville, Alabama. “Under perfect conditions, rates could soar to 200 meteors per hour.” An outburst is a meteor shower with more meteors than usual. The last Perseid outburst occurred in 2009. The best way to see the Perseids is to go outside between midnight and dawn on the morning of Aug. 12. Allow about 45 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark. Lie on your back and look straight up. Increased activity may also be seen on Aug. 12-13, and some activity will continue until August 24.

Chase misses Grand Prize in Kraft Contest by Kelsey Snelgrove, Chase Skate Park

Great Eyebrows don’t happen by

chance.

As you’ve probably heard by now, the Chase Skate Park didn’t manage to bring home the Grand Prize in the Kraft Heinz Project Play contest, but as a Finalist will receive $20,000. A crowd gathered at the Village Lanes Fun Centre to hear the results on TSN last Thursday, at the Chase Skate Park’s Reveal Party. The bowling alley was hushed as people listened intently as it was announced that the Nakkertok Nordic’s snowmaking project in Cantley, QC would be receiving the grand prize. While it was revealed that there were 900,000 votes cast online in total during

the competition, the numbers have not been released for how many votes each project received. CHASE OPEN HOUSE

Billets Needed Contributed by Scott Koch

August 29th is coming fast and homes are still needed for many of our Chase Heat hockey players. With each player comes $600.00 to help with the groceries, a wonderful smile of appreciation for your kindness and an adventure like no other once the regular hockey season starts. Did I mention you also get one seasons pass for each player that you welcome into your home? Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need an immediate place to live from September 2016 until March 2017. The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase

Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. Being a billet family is a very rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe comfortable environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. Everything for Healthy Living

Happiness—An Inside Job by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer

Sadly, there are people who unsuccessfully spend their whole lives trying to find happiness. Even the phrase “find happiness” implies that it is lost, secreted away in a space that requires heroic efforts and magic words to unlock the place of hidden treasure. Perhaps those on this quest for the Holy Grail of living fail just because they’re looking and because they’re searching in the wrong places. Happiness is not something that’s found – I mean, you don’t come across it lying under a bench as you walk through a mall or stroll in a park. And true happiness is not an external thing. Anyone who thinks bliss lies in possessions, in spending, or in self-gratification is bound to be disappointed. Anyone whose happiness is solely dependent upon another person risks being thwarted. Happiness cannot be chased down. It needs to be created. It must be sown and grown like a garden. Joy is an organic thing—requiring attention, nurturing and care. For it to endure drought, floods, extreme heat and cold, and even occasional neglect, human contentment must be rooted deeply in an admixture that is substantial and fertile. Our lives are not static. Emotion is part of life—life is sometimes sad. And so how do we nurture happiness in the midst of distress or crisis? Well, to have it, we sometimes have to let it go. Sometimes we have to be less than happy. Sometimes we are overcome—for a while. However, if we have developed

the source within ourselves, we will eventually return to pleasure, glad to have survived a cheerless time. As I wind down my time here, I’ll do so knowing that I have lived, that I have experienced all the highs and lows. Traversing life’s landscape like a flat liner is not an option for me. 25 years ago I was diagnosed with a serious cancer—my children were 7 and 10 years of age. They were simultaneously my greatest joy and my greatest sadness as I underwent nearly two years of surgeries and treatment. And once I finished weeping and punching pillows, I pulled myself together and got on with living, for I had to survive for them— eventually learning to laugh again though a deadly disease was stalking me. I took chemotherapy and cancer to the tennis court, returning vigorously to my sport, where I ran and sweated, hit the ball really hard, and found joy in leaving fear behind for awhile. I sent “live” messages to my body, joked and laughed—so I wouldn’t cry. With the help of skilled professionals, I jettisoned useless emotional baggage. I decided that even if I recurred, I would leave this earth on my timeline, would insist on living long enough to raise my children. And through all of this, I learned that happiness is an inside job. I learned I was my own spin-doctor—I could turn things around, make them work for me rather than against me. To be continued in the next Chase Sunflower...

Carolyn Parks Mintz is new to Chase, having relocated with her husband, James, to our charming community this summer.

Few more weeks of Rec Program by Cavelle Layes

While it may seem for many that summer has only just begun, the school year is sneaking closer. While many other events are just wrapping up, Chase kids can still get a few more weeks of fun and excitement in, before summer vacation officially comes to an end. The Chase Summer Recreation Program will continue to operate until August 19th, however, the spaces fill up quickly so it is wise to call and book a space for your child in advance. Next week’s adventures include an artful antics themed day, as well as a day at the park, a Super Soakin day, Thursday will be Peace Out day, and finally, Friday will be the end of the summer party. The summer camp has been a busy place this summer, providing local children with a place to explore new and exciting things while staying close to home. Between becoming crazy chemists, or pirates of the Shuswap, the kids not only have the chance to interact with others their age outside a school setting, they

also get the chance to learn a thing or two. Whether it is raining or shining, the leaders provide a full day of activities for the kids, including creating works of art, trips to the pool, or even playing games in the community hall ‘gym’. Summer camp has become a way for kids to meet new friends before school begins, and a way to create summer memories. Kids can be enrolled for the entire week, space permitting, or go on a day by day bases. Camp fees are based on the days theme. Parents are asked to pack the children a lunch, and ensure they have a swim suit, towel, sunscreen and hat in their bag. All belongings should also be labeled to avoid confusion. Drop-off is between 8 and 9 a.m. and pick up is between 3 and 4 p.m.. The camp is open to all ages between four and 11. For more information call 778-2292784 or 250-819-6674.

Obituary

Bruce Willis Hunter

June 9, 1924 – August 3, 2016 Bruce passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Berwick on the Park, Kamloops, BC. He was 92 years old. Forever remembered by his children Bob (Donna) Hunter, Dave (Bonnie) Hunter, Carol (Ron) Dunlop and Ron Hunter; eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; his brother Arthur (Elaine) Hunter; brothers in-law Lance McCormac, Ted McCormac and many nieces and nephews. Sadly predeceased by his parents, wife Elinor (2008), his sisters Muriel Hunter and Edith Doucette, stepmother Celia and sister in-law Gladys McCormac. Dad was born and raised in Armstrong, BC and very proud of it. He rarely missed the famous IPE (now in it’s 117th year) and Sunday car drives always included a history as well as ice cream. (Thank goodness). In 1945 he enlisted in the R.C.A.F in Vancouver as a mechanic. During this time he was introduced to Mom (a riveter for Boeing aircraft) and so the story of country-boy meets city-girl begins. They married August 31, 1946 and returned to Armstrong where four children, Bob (1947), Dave (1949), Carol (1952), and Ron (1959) arrived on the scene much to his delight. Many good years were spent in IPE country but a move to Kamloops was in their future when a logging contract came up. In 1969, with only little Ronnie and Duke (the family dog) in tow, Mom and Dad ventured north. Being from the Okanagan, fruit trees and berries had to be planted almost immediately! When Dad retired in 1979 they bought a lakeshore lot in Chase and built the home of their dreams. Dad supervised!! (he wasn’t quite in retirement mode yet). They enjoyed the “good life” for almost 24 years until Mom was forced to move to a care home in Kamloops in 2002. Dad spent many hours driving back and forth to Berwick on the Park (regardless of the weather) until her death in 2008. His last 21 months were also spent at Berwick. Bruce, our dad, was a man of strong convictions. He was hard working and tireless and always provided for his family and community. A true hunter and fisherman... we will surely miss his candied smoked salmon at Christmas. He had 3 little chief smokers!. It is comforting to know he has been greeted by his wife, Elinor and Tinker the bichon. Forever in our hearts.. The family would like to offer a very special thank you to everyone at Berwick for the wonderful care Dad received during his time there. It is greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice. It was at Dad’s request that there be no service. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.kamloopsfuneralhome.com

What did one math book say to the other? Don’t bother me; I’ve got my own problems! A wife bought her husband a brand new Thermos. Super excited about this new technology, he shows all who would listen. Finally, a co-worker asks what its purpose is. He happily answers: Well you see folks, this great new invention keeps warm food warm and cold food cold. So another asked what he put in it today. He answers: Soup and a Popsicle!
