Christmas in July Fundraiser at Chabelos
submitted The annual Chabelos Cares for Kids Christmas in July Fundraiser last Saturday had over 100 in attendance including members from the Chase Hamper Society. Attendees enjoyed a great pot luck and turkey feast. Photo booth and silent and live auction helped raise money. Toys were brought by Chabelos members and will be presented to the Hamper Society for their Christmas toy drive. Thanks to Talking Rock Golf Course and Spa, Sunshore Golf Course, Chase A&W, Chase Subway, Tree Top Flyers, Barley Station Pub, Home Hardware and Safety Mart for donations for the auction as well as many of Chabelos members who brought items for the auction and helped make our event a huge success. Chabelos members have a huge pride in Chase and strongly believe in giving back to the community. Great event topped off with live music provided by Jim Niemi and band and Whiners Draw set up by Corriie and Gil Plamondon.

Yes, Chase has many incredible things to offer our tourists; from our mountains to our lakes, to our quaint shops and great local eateries to our beautiful parks that are great for picnics, our stunning lodging, our golf courses, incredible hiking trails, live music at the lake…But did you know Treetop Flyers is in their 8th season in Chase? On Wednesday, our team at the Visitor’s Centre took part in a familiarization tour with Treetop Flyers! This benefits both sides allowing us to better explain to tourists what all Treetop Flyers has to offer- all the while Tree Top Flyers is able gain more traction through good old word of mouth. Not only do both sectors benefit, it is an overall positive experience for the tourist to be told what there is to do in the village and make them more likely to come back to Chase. Which, further more, benefits everyone in the town, and puts more revenue into Chase’s economy! Overall, we as tourist guides were able to gain first hand product and destination knowledge on what a visitor will entail

BC Wildfires 2017 submitted by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase CAO
Most of us are aware of the devastating wildfires that have swept through many places in BC this fire season. The fact that so many people had to be evacuated from their homes has got lots of people talking and wanting to help. Donations of clothing, food, toiletries, pet supplies and cash have been given by the generous people of British Columbia. Some folks in Chase have been asking, “Why didn’t the Village of Chase step up and set up an evacuation location in Chase?” There are a number of reasons for this: Large scale fires in BC have been occurring mainly in the Kamloops Fire Centre, the Cariboo Fire Centre, and the Prince George Fire Centre. These boundaries are Provincial Fire Service boundaries. Regional Districts are local government organizations in BC with different boundaries than the Provincial Fire Service boundaries, and these regional districts provide various services to the people in the regional areas, including emergency preparedness support in the event of widespread emergencies such as these large wildfires. In consultation with the BC Wildfire Service, Regional Districts that have people, animals and infrastructure threatened, will issue evacuation alerts or orders depending on the severity of the emergency. And depending on the numbers of evacuees and the locations needing evacuation, centres are set up in locations that are most suited to the needs of most people. The Regional Districts of Thompson Nicola, Cariboo and Okanagan Similkameen have been coordinating the evacuations of the populated areas that have been threatened by wildfires. Evacuation centres were set up in large cities such as Kamloops, Prince George, Cloverdale (Surrey), Chilliwack and Vernon as these cities have many more
amenities than do smaller communities (access to beds, bedding, food, medical services) and the space to house a large number of people. Centralizing services in communities that have many amenities makes sense and is more effective when providing supplies and provisions and making sure people are accounted for. Dealing with large number of people and animals and necessities for these people and animals takes coordination and logistics – centralized locations help to make those logistics more efficient and effective. Some of the evacuees were fortunate to have relatives and friends they could stay with in other locations besides the main evacuation areas set up by the Regional Districts. All evacuees, whether staying at the main evacuation centres, or with relatives or friends have all been urged to register with the Red Cross so that they can be contacted if necessary. Village of Chase staff did discuss on a number of occasions what the role of the Village could be during these large scale evacuations. Knowledgeable staff is available to assist the TNRD’s Emergency Operations Centre if required. And ultimately, the TNRD is aware that the Village of Chase would be ready to do whatever we are asked to do by the Thompson Nicola Regional District (or any other Regional District or other agency) to assist with evacuees during this or any other very challenging time. Centralizing evacuation centres and other support services ensures effective coordination of such efforts and is one of the main keys to providing emergency services. If the Village of Chase is asked to provide spaces and/or services, we will not hesitate for one moment. And we know the kindness of our community members would shine in such an instance.

RCMP Report submitted by Chase RCMP
TRAFFIC On July 24th, 2017 at 4:45 pm, Chase RCMP responded to a report of a Semi-Trailer rollover on Highway One at Lindberg Road (known locally as Cruickshank Curves) in Sorrento, BC. Police, BC Ambulance Service and JPW Road Maintenance attended. A westbound white Kenworth tractor and trailer drove off road into the No Post barriers, causing the Semi-Trailer to roll onto the passenger side. The driver of the truck was issued a Violation Ticket for ‘Drive Without Due Care’. On July 24th, 2017 at 8:00 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of a hit and run collision in Chase, BC. A small red pickup towing a white enclosed trailer entered the westbound Trans-Canada Highway from Shuswap Avenue. The red pickup failed to yield to a westbound tractor-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway. The driver of the semi-trailer unit attempted to brake and pulled to the left to avoid a collision. The Semi unit hit the concrete median with the driver’s side wheels. The red pickup struck the passenger side of the semi unit. The pick-up then fled without stopping. Anyone with any information regarding this investigation, or any other crime, is

West Nile virus risk increases as summer heats up As summer temperatures increase, so does the risk of West Nile virus. The risk of getting West Nile virus is highest from the end of July through August. There are some important measures people can take to reduce their risk of infection. West Nile virus is a disease that is spread from infected corvid birds (crows, ravens, magpies, and jays) to humans through mosquito bites. It was first detected in B.C. in the South Okanagan during the summer of 2009. Since then there have been four human cases - all in the Okanagan. Last year the virus was detected in horses and birds in the Kootenays, confirming the virus is present there as well. Several parts of Canada and the U.S. continue to report

Interior Health West Nile virus activity. The risk of becoming seriously ill from West Nile virus infection is low for most people. However, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are more at risk. There are things everyone can do both at home and while travelling to reduce the risk of infection. Any activity that prevents mosquitoes from biting or breeding can help to reduce the risk of becoming infected with West Nile virus. Prevent mosquito breeding around your home. It doesn’t take much time or water for mosquitoes to develop from eggs into adults. Anything that can hold water can be a mosquito breeding area. Identify and remove potential breeding areas on your property - empty saucers under flowerpots; change water in bird baths twice a week; unclog rain gutters; drain tarps, tires, and other debris where rain water may collect; and install a pump in ornamental ponds or stock them with fish. Stagnant backyard pools can be a big source of mosquitoes and should be maintained regularly to prevent mosquito growth.
Install screens on windows. Screens will help prevent mosquitoes from coming indoors. Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn. This is the time of day mosquitoes that can carry the virus are most active. Wear protective clothing. If you are in an area with many mosquitoes, wear loose fitting, light coloured, full-length pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. Use mosquito repellent. Apply mosquito repellent to areas of exposed skin. Check the product label for instructions on proper use. Repellents containing DEET are safe for those over six months of age when used according to the directions on the label. View the HealthLinkBC file on DEET (http://www.healthlinkbc.ca/healthfiles/ hfile96.stm) for guidelines on how frequently to apply repellent. DEET-free products (such as those containing icardin, p-menthane-3, 8-diol /lemon-eucalyptus oil, or soybean oil) are also available, but may not provide as long-lasting protection.
KYSA SOCCER SCHOOLS BEGINNING SOON KAMLOOPS, BC –– In just over two week’s time the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) will stage the first of three week-long soccer schools.
