Kids Volunteer at Pasta Project Submitted by Cavelle Layes, Chase Fire Rescue

O

n behalf of Chase Fire Rescue, I would like to thank everyone for coming out to the Pasta Project! We are grateful for the ongoing support we receive from our community. Because of this amazing support, the Chase Firefighters Association is giving away 100% of the proceeds raised from The event . 50% will be going to the Lions Club’s Splash Park Project, and the other 50% is going to the Youth Action Committee . The kids that were helping at the event, were not being paid to be there. They volunteered for work experience. These kids ran their little butts off. They were wonderful, polite and professional (and ranged in ages from about 9-17). The youth were Natalie MacDonald, Haylee Nakazawa, Brianna Narcisse, Christian Greenway, Mercy Miller and Brendan

Murray. These little guys did not stop. They were serving tables, cleaning tables, refilling drinks, checking in to make sure if their guests needed anything. They helped clean up the event (and again did an awesome job) and not once was there a single complaint from them, in fact they were asking for more to do. The only time I seen them stop moving was for a quick water break and then they would be off again. They were incredibly polite to top it off!!!! These kids were absolutely amazing !!! Better skill than I’ve seen in some restaurants. ....Continued on page 4

Youth Get Involved with Pasta ProjeCt For those who may not know, the money raised from tips left at the tables, goes to the Youth Action Committee’s bowling event. This money, and the money donated to them from the Chase Firefighters Association will help fund a day where Chase kids can go and bowl a few rounds of bowling for free. This event gives the youth a positive thing to look forward to, and gives them a safe place for them to have fun. The Chase Action Committee does an amazing job with the kids in Chase. They help the develop work skills and experience they can use in the future, they teach teamwork, and they help provide opportunities for kids of all ages who might not otherwise receive it. They have taken what was looked at as a ‘teenager problem ‘ in Chase just a short time ago, and flipped it on its head. The group of kids from a wide age range including 9-years-olds up to teenagers and have created a group that gives back to the community, who helps support local events, and has provided productive and enjoyable things for the youth in Chase to do.

The parents of all the kids who helped (and of course the kids themselves) should be incredibly proud of the work they accomplished. If you would like to donate some funds towards the youth action committee’s bowling event please contact Ali Maki at alimaki.villageofchase@gmail.com The Chase Firefighter’s Association and the Youth Action Committee would like to thank the following volunteers and sponsors:

• Village Lanes Fun Centre • Miller’s Cabin • Andy & Cece; Karaoke and Live Auction • Chase Firefighter’s Association Members • YAC Core Committee Members • Safety Mart for the incredible cake design! • Natalie Jones Rushworth for training the youth!

His smile is infectious, his spirit boundless, and he offers warmth and friendship to everyone he meets. Legendary dancer, Ernie Philip was born in Tappen in 1930, lived on the coast and returned home in 1989, where he continues to live today. Over his lifetime, he has earned countless awards, danced in countries around the world, worked in film and TV, and inspired many First Nation youth to take more pride in their ancient culture. It is possible that one could trace Ernie’s success back to the skills and knowledge he gained from his grandfather, who raised him until the age of 8 when he was hauled off to residential school in a cattle truck. Unable to speak English, he was slapped and strapped every time he was caught speaking Secwepemctsin. As soon as he could leave the school at age 16, Ernie worked at many different jobs, including logging, farming, mining, in factories, and on the railway. He began to drink and one day nearly committed suicide. At one time, First Nation dancing was illegal and only occurred inside homes behind covered windows. But in 1951, the law was scrapped and Ernie was asked to join others in a parade in Kamloops dressed in regalia and encouraged to dance. He began to dance more often, beginning with traditional Secwepemc dances including some that he had learned from his grandfather wearing regalia he made by hand. Ernie travelled to Oklahoma, where he learned new dancing styles from elders and adopted their brightly coloured regalia. But drinking remained a problem and in 1963 he checked into a halfway house where he fell in love with a young employee of Irish and French ancestry, Yvonne. After following her supervisor’s requirement that he stay dry for a year, they

married and he never drank again. Ernie’s success is due in part to their teamwork, as Yvonne took on the task of creating his regalia. Dancing became Ernie’s passion and as he racked up Grand Champion Fancy Dancer awards year after year, he was hired to perform in schools, and for large audiences across North America, Europe, and Asia. In Australia and New Zealand, he met with local Indigenous communities. At home, he helped organize Pow Wows in Mission, Kamloops and Chase. Ernie believes dancing has made him strong because for him it is about love and respect. And he loves any kind of dancing and the people who dance. He explains, “I believe that our art, our song, our dance, is the mirror we look into – to see who we are.” And he stresses, “…these songs and these dances, they have been here for thousands of years.” A deeply spiritual man and a true humanitarian, Ernie has developed a strong sense of his own identity. “I dance with my people, I know who I am. I respect who I am. Because I respect who I am…I know how to respect you.” His journey from the depths of despair to the heights of success speaks to the powerful inherent spirit of Indigenous culture. Now at the age of 86, Ernie continues to dance and so do his three children. A proud member of the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band, he served for years as an ambassador for the famed Quaaout Resort and Conference Centre. In 2010, a former co-worker, Brian Sumner, saw Ernie dance and heard his stories about the residential school. He offered to help apply for a grant to produce a short film about reconciliation in the context of Ernie’s life. Two filmmakers joined the team and a full-length documentary, Dancing Bear, was produced and is now awaiting distribution. Jim Cooperman blogs at www.shuswappassion.ca about environmental issues, history and culture.

Playing on Pebbles The HEAT’s franchise record winning streak now sits at 10 consecutive games after a pair of victories this past week. Thursday, November 10th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena they claimed two points off the Sicamous EAGLES with a 7-3 win. Two nights later they welcomed the Summerland STEAM to AHMA and were rewarded with a 3-1 two pointer. In between the pair of games they attended the Remembrance Day Parade and Service. It was a busy, rewarding and educational three days in the Village. Behind solid goaltending from Zak Larson against the EAGLES the lads let the visitors score the lone marker of the 1st period by Logan Middleton. The 2nd was all Chase as Josh Bourne led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist. The first one was from Michael Howlett and Grady Musgrave. Bourne then scored a powerplay tally assisted by Ryan Okino

and Cody Hodges. Kolten Moore on the powerplay made it 3-1 with the help of Okino and Bourne. In the 3rd Cameron Flinton for the EAGLES got them close, before the HEAT got turned up. Kaden Black from Zachary Fournier and Spencer Farstad, followed by Howlett from Bourne and Mason Palaga, and then Hodges from Landon Russell and Okino. Cody Milgate popped in a 3rd goal for Sicamous prior to Black closing out scoring from Fournier and Farstad. The team’s 9th win in a row a 7-3 win. Saturday night saw the local squad being polite again as the STEAM’s Everett Scherger got the only goal of the 1st. In the 2nd Pat Brady evened the game from Moore and Farstad. In the 3rd Michael Fidanza gave Chase the lead from Bourne and Howlett. Howlett banged in an empty netter from Fidanza and Brady to ease the intense drama. Nic

Ingredients: 4 ounces linguine pasta 2 chicken breast halves 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning 2 tablespoons butter 1 red bell pepper, sliced 1 green bell pepper, sliced 4 fresh mushrooms, sliced 1 green onion, chopped 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Add all ingredients to list

Bruyere closed the door on all but 1 of the 33 he faced to backstop his teammates to their 10th victory in a row. This contest featured the two leading teams in the Okanagan Shuswap Conference, with Chase earning the decision of the best in the west. STONES, BROOMS and PEBBLES: The HEAT through a very generous offer by the Chase Curling Club have established a Monday Night Curling League. So after dropping sticks and skates the boys have opted to slip slide away while tossing stones on the pebbled ice. Kids and adults alike are welcome to go down and giggle as their favourite HEAT player looks awkward end after end. The Curling Club is kindly providing instruction and equipment as the shinny stars learn the lifelong art of sweeping and tossing rocks.

Directions: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain. Place the chicken and the Cajun seasoning in a plastic bag. Shake to coat. In a large skillet over medium heat, saute the chicken in butter or margarine until almost tender (5 to 7 minutes). Add the red bell pepper, green bell pepper, mushrooms and green onion. Saute and stir for 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce heat. Add the cream, basil, lemon pepper, salt, garlic powder and ground black pepper. Heat through. Add the cooked linguine, toss and heat through. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and serve.

Pin Chatter: News from the Bowling Alley It was a fun tournament Sunday this past weekend at Village Lanes! We had 100 local bowlers, competing against each other, and centres from across British Columbia in hopes of taking home the $1000.00 Grand Prize being handed out by Bowl BC! Being that Village Lanes only has eight lanes available at one time, we ended up running three shifts on Sunday to accommodate the 100 competitors! Winning the first shift was the Sorrento Rollers from our Monday morning seniors league, made up of Wally and Sonya Yachimec, Dave McPherson,

THE

submitted by Calyn Buresh, Village Lanes Marshall Mills, and their pick-up, Lana German! Lana also won a side-pot for most Pins Over Average in one game! Placing first in the second shift, again from a Club 55+ league, were the Outlaws, from Tuesday afternoon! The team that was comprised of Ken and Karen Baker, John and Donna Mosimann, and Pat Underhill, took home $125.00 for their team. As if that wasn’t enough, Karen also won TWO Pins Over Average Pots, adding to her individual prize money by $70.00! Way to go Karen! The final shift, the scores weren’t

as great, but yours truly was on the winning team! No thanks to myself, but teammates Sandra Coates, Sam Steil, Kaitlyn Deleeuw, and Jessy Buchanan all had their moments of fame and bowled up a storm! Good job ladies. Now, competitors wait it out to see if anyone will be “taking home the big bucks” from Bowl BC. Thank you to all of the bowlers who competed this past weekend. You are the reason why we love what we do! Cheers, and we will talk to you next week!
