The Birth House by Ami McKay

Like many good Canadian stories, this one is set against the ruggedness of the East Coast. It is the early 1900s and women are largely still giving birth at home, often with the help of knowledgeable midwives. This story depicts their ostracism from communities that came with an increased medicalization of the process of birth and tells the journey of a woman who tried to defend the sacredness of her own bodies abilities.

Not only introducing some interesting, and sometimes challenging, themes, this book offers an engaging plot and beautiful descriptions. My only real criticism is that I found it to be melodramatic at parts and unfortunately the rawness of the story lost its sense of reality for me. Still it comes not only recommended by me, but by critics across Canada, and was even nominated for the 2016 Canada Reads book panel.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time by Trustee Denise Harper, School District No. 73 (Kamloops/Thompson)

The school year is well underway. Students are settled in their classes and a lot of fun learning is taking place. You may be forgiven for thinking the hardworking people at School District 73 could sit back and take a breath. But you would be wrong. Throughout the school year administrative staff members are constantly engaged in planning, budgeting, adapting, preparing, learning and responding. Some activities are a grind but many are exciting and engaging. Preparing for next year’s Kindergarten students is an activity that falls in the latter category. Administrators and teachers alike look forward to the first weeks of school and to welcoming new registrants who are at the beginning of their school careers. The kindergarten year launches both children and their families on an exciting adventure. A child’s future success and attitude toward education can be determined by the quality of their first experience. With this in mind School District No. 73 and, in particular, our Kindergarten teachers, work in partnership with parents or guardians to ensure each child’s first year is joyful, wondrous and positive. This can take enormous effort and requires a great deal of cooperation. It may surprise you to read that the first step toward a successful Kindergarten year begins with Kindergarten Registration. Held in February, the Registration Meetings provide the district with data necessary to allocate staff and other resources to ensure a smooth start to the school year. Knowing how many students to expect and knowing if a child has specific needs is critical.

Quinoa Slaw Salad

Slaw Ingredients: 1 (16-ounce) bag shredded red cabbage (or about 4 cups shredded cabbage) 2 cups cooked quinoa 2 cups shredded carrots 2/3 cup thinly-sliced green onions 1/2 cup slivered or sliced almonds, toasted

For parents or guardians and their children the information the district provides at registration helps everyone to prepare for this significant milestone in a child’s life. Beginning in January the district began sending out notices, places ads in the local paper and takes other measures to advise parents and caregivers of the date and time for Kindergarten Registration meetings. Please watch for this information. Each September schools are surprised by late registrants who live in our communities but were missed at registration time. While we are always delighted to receive new students, their late arrive may cause organizational challenges. New classes may have to be created, existing classes reconfigured and new teachers hired. Depending on the number of students already enrolled in any given school, the need to reconfigure classes can have an unsettling ripple effect. While schools work to manage reorganization of classes swiftly and efficiently, it would be a good thing to avoid altogether. The district will begin advertising registration meetings soon. Notices will appear in School Newsletters and ads will be placed in local newspapers. Details can also be found on the SD73 website. Moms and Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, Sister and Brothers and Guardians, if you have a child in your family, who will be five years old by the end of December 2016, please make sure they are registered to attend school in September 2016. Note: next month’s column will be written by Trustee Kathleen Karpuk and will discuss what you can do to prepare your child for Kindergarten.

Valentine Trivia

Based on retail statistics, about 3 per cent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets. Many believe the X symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn’t write their names signed in front of a witness with an X. The X was then kissed to show their sincerity. Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines day gifts Every Valentine’s Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet. In Victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card. In 1537, England’s King Henry VII officially declared Feb. 14 the holiday of St. Valentine’s Day.
