Capitol Theatre rocks ’n’ roars

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

The organizers of Rock N Roar for Sophia are thankful Cha-

Rock N Roar, feared slow advance ticket sales would lead to a fizzle rather than a sizzle for the local concert and silent auction. Rock N Roar was a fundraiser featuring local bands and local auction items to raise money for Ronald McDonald House in London, specifically trying to raise $10,000 to have a room there named in honour of Sophia Vlasman. The local teenager is battling cancer of the sinuses. Owen said estimates put between 400 and 500 people in the theatre for last Friday’s concert, which featured local acts Walkin’ 47, Face 4

The thundering roar of a B-17 Flying Fortress will be heard over Chatham this July for the first time ever as the iconic Second World War bomber headlines the first Flight Fest at the Chatham Airport. “We’re incredibly excited to have ‘The Yankee Lady’ here this summer and even more excited that local residents will be able to fly in it,” said Brent DeNure, one of the event organizers. “There are fewer than 10 B-17s flying and The Yankee Lady is one of only six which is allowed to carry passengers.” The July 16 event has been modeled after the highly successful FireFest, which has brought thousands to the downtown Chatham core its first two years. “We’re hoping to use the same formula as FireFest, but once we give them a hand this year it will be a standalone event with its own organizers,” DeNure said. There will be no admission charge and attendees will be able to go on board The Yankee Lady, take part in tethered hotair balloon rides and a number

of other events. The fully restored plane is a “living museum” according to crew chief member Norm Ellickson, who has been involved with the plane for nearly a quarter century. Ellickson, who has spent a lifetime working on and flying in airplanes, said restoration of The Yankee Lady took nine years. He said some 20,000 persons have flown in the craft since it reclaimed the skies 15 years ago. The plane is maintained and operated by the Yankee Air Force Inc., which has its museum in Belleville, Mich. The group is in the midst of a fundraising effort to purchase a part of the former Willow Run plant, which produced thousands of military aircraft in the Second World War. More than 12,000 B-17s were produced and the planes dropped 640,000 tons of bombs on Nazi-occupied sites during the war, more than any other U.S. aircraft. The B-17’s exploits were immortalized in the movie “The Memphis Belle,” one of the first U.S. bombers to complete 25 combat missions.

Picture perfect RetroFest This year’s Retrofest was an amazing example of what happens when a good idea, a great venue and perfect weather come together. Thousands of citizens from across Chatham-Kent and beyond turned out to view more than 600 cars that were on display in Historic Downtown Chatham. It was estimated that between 15,000 and 25,000 persons took in the weekend, some from hundreds of kilometres away. The 12th annual event began Friday night with a traditional cruise around the community, but the major part of the show was Saturday with the hundreds of cars lining downtown Chatham streets. Tecumseh Park was filled with music, vendors and an outdoors children’s’ movie, which was well attended. Miss RetroFest, Dani Hrabek, was crowned after receiving more than 1,400 online votes in a contest that attracted 36 entries. Any event of this size takes plenty of planning and co-ordination The Kent Historic Auto Club, the Historic Chatham Business Association, the participating merchants and Chatham Kent police and city hall staff all deserve praise for the event’s success. Seeing the event grow (the number of cars have doubled when compared to the first year) is proof positive that hard work pays off. The immediate spin-off is the thousands who came down and provided a weekend economic boost, but the long-term effect is that thousands saw downtown Chatham and all it has to offer. Many will be returning to their communities with fond memories of the event and a newly held regard for our community. From the Capitol Theatre to Tecumseh Park, the event went off without a hitch. Those involved should take a well-deserved bow.

Opinion

RetroFest at its retro best Sir: I found last year’s RetroFest to be an impressive event, but this year’s event can truly claim to be the winner of “Chatham-Kent’s Got Talent” and winner of a provincial, if not a national “Idol” competition. Crowds during peak time seemed to be the same as last year, except the peak time lasted significantly longer, providing evidence of a better-attended event. Our company has hosted and sponsored events in Canada and in the U.S. I can strongly

state, proportional to the intent and meaning of this event, our company could not have come close to a level of success demonstrated by this year’s RetroFest. I always appreciate any community initiative that pays multiple dividends back to Chatham-Kent. We are a multi-community and not just a Ward 6 City of Chatham district. Although RetroFest seems to create a dynamite infusion of economics to our Chatham

downtown core, all C-K communities seemed to have benefitted. Many people I chatted with came from many miles away, and as they said, used this event to visit friends and relatives in our C-K communities. One couple I met from Kitchener was staying in Wallaceburg for the weekend and asked me for a listing of retail shops. Another couple asked for a listing of antique and flea markets. Of

course a number of our communities have such retails stores. This confirmed to me that RetroFest creates spinoff for our communities other than just Chatham. That’s what it’s about. With the diversity of happenings at RetroFest, the historical, cultural, educational and entertainment value, my applause is intense to everyone involved with the annual hosting of such a world-class function. John Cryderman Chatham

VON support greatly appreciated Sir: For weeks and months now, my wife Evelyn and I have been receiving visits from staff at the VON.

Their presence in our home in assisting me in care and treatment of Evelyn is beyond the word “thanks.”

We are very happy with their care and treatment. Joe Johns Chatham

Ontario’s big race looming Media pundits (we’re among them) are fond of referring to elections as horse races. There are more than a few similarities. The contestants run in a circle, the track always has some fertilizer on it, and, viewed from a certain perspective, it can be argued that there is a similarity between the entrants. With that in mind, sit back, pretend you’re at Dresden Raceway or Churchill Downs in Kentucky, and listen as your track announcer gives you a taste of the action. “Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the 2014 Queen’s Park Special. It’s a six-week long race for bragging rights in Canada’s newest havenot province.” “And ... they’re off! “It’s Horvath first out of the gate riding ‘We Can’t Support That Budget,’ followed by Hudak’s ‘Last Chance At Glory,’ while Wynne’s ‘Scandal

Jim Blake Schmandal’ is trying to catch up. “Rounding the first bend in a pack are the entries from Energy Stables. Hydro One’s ‘Miss Management’ and ‘Erased E-mails’ are still contending, while ‘Gas Plant Billions’ is falling out of contention and ‘Wind Turbine Controversy’ just spins along. “At the back of the pack is a pair of four year olds, ‘E-Health Debacle’ and ‘Ornge Air Ambulance.’ “As we near the halfway point, entries from the Slogans Are Us Stables are near the front. ‘Million Job Man’ and ‘Pink Slip Plan’ are setting the pace, while ‘We

can’t Think of Anything Catchy to Say’ looks for an opening. “Wearing orange silks is ‘We Need More Debates,’ followed by ‘We’ll Try and Make It This Time’ in red. Big blue’s ‘We Got Tripped Up on a Platform’ doesn’t want to run on that part of the track, and green’s ‘Just Get the Message Out’ stepped in a carbon hoof print and has gone lame. “Being ignored by the big horses is ‘Where the Heck is Chatham-Kent.’

“As we come down to the wire ... ‘Real Reform’ doesn’t have a chance. ‘Same Old Same Old’ is looking strong, while nobody’s favourite ‘It Looks Like a Minority’ and ‘Let’s Do This Again Next Year’ are battling it out. “‘Our Only Real Hope’ seems to be encouraging ‘Get Out and Vote,’ but ‘That’s Up to You” will take it at the wire.

ReStore still building stock

By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

Plans for a Habitat for Humanity ReStore are well under way in Chatham thanks to a generous grant and local volunteers. Habitat board members, staff and volunteers met May 21 at the organization’s new location at 566 Riverview Dr. to showcase progress on the store and offices and thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for the threeyear $368,200 grant that is helping to make it all possible. Patty Peters, a member of the Trillium local grant review team, was on hand to announce the funds. “Habitat for Humanity has done an excellent job

of mobilizing and engaging volunteers in the community,” Peters said. She added that the excellent business plan and track record of Habitat made the choice of supporting the ReStore project an “easy one.” The funds are being used to hire a full-time manager for the store, Kevin Carpenter, lease the rental space at the old Eaton-Yale factory and renovate the facility. ReStore, according to Habitat executive director Nancy McDowell, will be a retail operation that accepts donations of new and gently used building supply materials and household goods. The bulk of the operation will be run by volunteers, who McDowell credits with

the success of Habitat in the community. “There are 83 ReStores, soon to be 84, across Canada run 90% by volunteers. That’s 525,000 volunteer hours,” McDowell explained. “Not only are volunteers essential but they also can learn skills that help them find employment.” Two volunteers with last year’s first house build were able to find jobs thanks to their experience working on Habitat’s project, she said. Mayor Randy Hope was also on hand to congratulate the board and volunteers and thank OTF for being a major factor in the community, “fulfilling dreams and opportunities.

CKHA recruiter earns national award

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

Local medical recruiter Fannie Vavoulis is doing such a good job that she recently earned national recognition. Vavoulis, the medical recruiter and education co-ordinator for the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, earned the Canadian Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (CASPR) recruiter recognition award at a conference in Prince Edward Island. According to a CKHA press release, the award recognizes a physician recruiter that is innovative and a role model in the areas of physician attraction, recruitment and retention activities, in addition to someone who demonstrates commitment and passion for the profession. Colin Patey, president and CEO of the alliance, said Vavoulis is all that and more. “She’s so enthusiastic, so informed, so committed to Chatham-Kent. We all know Fannie. She just exudes Chatham-Kent,” he said, adding she is very plugged into the community. As for Vavoulis, she’s proud of the award but is quick to deflect credit. “For me, it’s humbling. But I also don’t feel that it is just my award. Many people are involved in the recruitment process. It’s an award for the community,” she said. “We’ve done a great and successful job recruiting physicians here. That says a lot about the community.” Since joining the alliance, Vavoulis has helped bring in 41 physicians – including 20 family

“This is a great step up for Chatham-Kent. It’s been a long journey, but long journeys build character in who we are,” Hope said. “This project is giving an opportunity for people to get back on their feet in this community.” Municipal CAO Don Shropshire, who was a volunteer on the first home build last year, said the experience was great and he congratulated Habitat on the ReStore grant. “This is a foundational piece of building Habitat’s future and a great step forward.” McDowell said they hope to have the ReStore open this July and once that project is completed, they will focus on finding a qualifying family to start a new build next spring, and hopefully have enough funds to do two or three homes a year. Drop-off days are continuing right now at the ReStore location, and members of the community can bring items to donate from 9 a.m. to noon June 7, 14, 21 and 28. Life Making the best of a rough weekend

Man, I hate being sick.

But I despise being sick

ARTspace

on a big weekend. Yeah, I missed RetroFest and Rock N Roar. Rather than checking out classic cars and local bands, I spent most of my time with a thermometer in my mouth Friday night and into Sunday. Since my wife is just getting over pneumonia, she reminded me – rather sternly, I might add – to take it easy. So not only did I stay home, but on a beautiful Saturday when yard work was calling my name, I pulled out my gravity chair and settled down on the shaded patio to read a novel, while sipping non-alcoholic beverages. That’s right, with a growler full of Bayside Brewing Co.’s brown ale mere metres away, I was sucking back water and juice. But, knowing how ill my wife became for trying to toil through her illness, I heeded her words. I rested, drank my beverages and read a classic – Ar-

Bruce Corcoran thur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World.” Having not read that epic for decades, it was a fresh read for me, and I laughed at the writing style of an early 1900s master. A little too much flourish for today’s standards (then again, anything more than a text message or a tweet is too much for some people today). So there I sat in the shade, with the sound of the pond and some classic rock in the background, reading away the day. OK, that was the intention. I quickly had to put down the book and dozed off, a light breeze keeping me company. So maybe my Saturday could have been a lot

worse. But I do hate being sick. As a result, when I felt much better on Sunday, I took to some light chores – cleaning the furnace filters and preparing the air conditioner for summer. Added to that was some weed control and work around the pond. Nothing major and nothing that would earn my wife’s ire. And I took repeated breaks, staying hydrated and reading a few chapters. But my final break of the day led me back into the gravity chair. I finished the novel just in time to enjoy the late-afternoon breeze and another nap. I guess the weekend could have been worse. But I did hate missing what sounds like a stellar RetroFest, as well as the emotional Rock N Roar concert. Put pork on your fork

I didn’t even light up the

barbecue this weekend, and it was prime grilling weather. But that didn’t mean we didn’t enjoy some wonderful home cooking. My wife did pulled pork in the slow cooker. She put it on overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning – nice and slow, tender, juicy, and spicy. Our daughter and I are big pulled pork fans. But she missed out for the most part on the weekend, as she spent much of it at a friend’s house, returning home Sunday night after dinner. “Awww!” But she had a bun that night and even thought about taking another in her lunch the next day, except she had no means at school to heat up the pork. As for me, I had a late breakfast sandwich of pulled pork, fried egg and cheese. For dinner, I just went with the pulled pork and cheese. Awesome.

Do they want to pick them up all the way into Chatham and go back out, or take a different route?” Teams must be back at 4 p.m., or they face a stiff penalty – a point for every minute they are late. At stake for the 20 teams is a top fundraiser prize pack worth more than $1,200, McDowell said, as well as the top geocaching prize of $1,000 cash, second place payout of $500, and third place financial reward of $250. The caches are scattered in various locations, including businesses, historic locations, in natural settings, wherever, McDowell said. Some caches are puzzles that must be solved, some are multi-caches. The teams will end the day with a barbecue and live entertainment, as judges tally up the scores. McDowell said last year’s event raised $5,000, as seven teams of two participated. She hopes to see the challenge event continue to grow each year.

Montour scales hockey ladder

By Ian Kennedy cksn.ca

Former Tilbury resident Brandon Montour will almost surely be selected in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft after the offensive defenseman grabbed the eye of scouts starring for the Waterloo Blackhawks of the United States Hockey League this season. “My run here in the USHL has been one of the best decisions I have made; the league’s very good,” said Montour, who left the Caledonia Corvairs of the GOJHL after the 2012-2013 season to join the USHL. “I have improved my game in all aspects, and the organization we have here in Waterloo is

top notch.” That improvement has been seen by those around the USHL, as well as NHL scouts, who had Montour ranked 186th during their midterm ranking, and 92nd in the final NHL Central Scouting rankings. Leaving Chatham-Kent in 2008 with his family to move to the Brantford area, Montour is a Chatham-Kent Cyclones alumni, and soon, will be a USHL alumni as he moves on to play NCAA Division I hockey with the University of Massachusetts. Beyond the NCAA, Montour is eying the NHL. “It’s what you dream of growing up and, yes, it’s pretty surreal to see my name up on the list and it is a really
