Chatham’s Jocelyn McGlynn has won the health lottery.

McGlynn, diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in November, announced recently a match stem cell donor has been found for her.

“I’m in remission. They found a 10-out-of-10 perfect match,” she said via video on Facebook.

“We got to a place where council was comfortable.

I think some people in the group were aiming for a number below the inflation rate. And there were some individuals who expressed something around two per cent,” he said.

The committee also pledged additional funds towards upkeep of gravel roads in Chatham-Kent, diverting $200,000 in new funding towards them, and sending part of the existing infrastructure increases their way as well.

These initiatives were completed in the first two nights of deliberations at the end of January. Last week, the trimming to the budget came in the form of addressing one-time spending requirements, McGregor said.

“We looked at some of the items proposed in the draft budget that were one-time spending items, and we funded them as one-time items,” he said, adding that they were funded through reserves.

“For example, there was equipment we needed for fire and emergency services. We still purchased that equipment, but we funded it through money we had saved in reserves.

That’s what reserves are for – one-time spends.”

The budget committee also added to municipal reserves, packing away $250,000 for arena construction or renovations.

“It’s a strategy to start saving for whatever council decides,” McGregor said. Council is still considering replacing the aging Memorial and Er-

ickson arenas in Chatham with a twin pad facility.

“Erickson and Memorial are at end of life. We talked about a new arena in the past. There is going to need to be an investment at some point.”

Rather than wait and borrow the entirety of funds, McGregor said the committee opted to squirrel away some money now.

Those funds can be used towards a new facility, or if council opts against such a move, to invest into improvements at the existing arenas.

“It’s a financially responsible decision,” McGregor said. “When we look at the lifecycle budget for arena infrastructure, we budget enough to do some regular repairs, but there is no ability in the budget to pay for significant renovation or replacement.”

Provincial funding decreases impacted the committee’s work this year, McGregor said, as the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund cut $500,000 from transfers to the municipality.

“We all know municipalities are the creations of the province. A very significant portion of our funding flows from the province. If there’s uncertainty, that makes budget planning very difficult,” he said.

“We were told you have a better likelihood of winning the lottery than finding a match. It’s like finding someone with the same fingerprints as you,” she said. “It was like the best news I will ever receive. I don’t know if anything can compare to that.”

Pomajba said McGlynn will have to travel to the cancer centre prior to the procedure for preparation. But the donor is already being prepared by receiving growth hormones to make his body generate extra stem cells prior to the procedure.

McGlynn, her family and friends organized several blood donor clinics and swab events in Chatham and London,

Pomajba said what you see in the video is what you get with McGlynn.

“You can really tell her character when you watch that video. She was just so gracious for all the people who helped her. And she encouraged people to still get checked, because other people are still on the list,” Pomajba said.

“That’s just so revealing of her as a person.”

Pomajba also encourages people who are eligible to get swabbed and register as stem cell donors.

“It’s so easy to match people. I thought I’d have to really sell it to people, but when they realize there’s a need, they enthusiastically join up,” Pomajba said. “The kindness of strangers kept me

going through all this.

“I encourage people to join the register. It’s so easy. You can do it online.

They’ll send a kit to your house,” she said. “It’s a really beautiful thing you can do for someone.”

Basically, anyone between the ages of 17 and 35 can register, she added.

“I can’t believe the amount of people we got to participate in the swab and blood clinics. It’s incredible,” McGlynn said.

“Thank you to everyone who has helped make my bad news into something good. I feel like we are going to help a lot of people with that.”

McGlynn, 21, is a fourth year medical sciences student at Western. She hopes to one day become a doctor.

Through the battle, Pomajba said McGlynn’s spirits have remained unchanged.

Swift reaction to ice jam on Thames

Municipal officials were breathing easier Monday after water levels along the Thames River dropped following a scare on Friday.

Mayor Darrin Canniff issued a state of emergency in Chatham-Kent Friday due to seepage along a Thames River dike that was breached in several locations near Poppe Road and Buchanan Line north of Tilbury.

Repairs on the dike continued through the weekend even as the water levels were dropping.

As of Monday, municipal staff reported the pressure on the dikes has dropped along with the water levels. But the ice

jam was slow to break up. As of Monday, it had stayed put at the mouth of the Thames, but continued to build back to the Prairie Siding Bridge.

Dick added the forces at play when an ice jam does let go is “incredible.”

He added the flow on the Thames River is about half as strong as it was last year during the February 2018 flood that damaged parts of Thamesville and Chatham.

“That’s good in a way, but it lacks the pressure to push the ice jam more efficiently. It can make the jam worse, but it gives you less water to deal with,” he said. “There are a number of factors that affect ice in a jam: temperature, ice conditions and flow.”

Dick said the higher water levels in Lake St. Clair slow the flow as well, as the water just doesn’t exit the Thames River as quickly.

“The higher lake levels make things more challenging for us,” he said.

So too do the conditions at the mouth of the Thames in Lighthouse Cove. Dick said the ice was still smooth and resistant there as of Friday afternoon.

“Until it lets go, we probably won’t see any change here,” he said from the end of Poppe Road where the river was an unmoving mass of broken ice that nearly reached the top of the dike.

On Friday, Canniff held a press conference at the end of Poppe Road on the dike. He said at the time the Thames was about 12-15 feet higher than normal west of Prairie Siding.

“The state of emergency is due to the concern about the dikes,” he said.

“There are some leaks.

It’s stable right now. But the state of emergency allows us to act quickly.”

Tim Dick, director of drainage, asset and waste management for the municipality, said crews were monitoring the dike, and if they discovered leaks, the municipality would bring in equipment to make repairs.

In the vicinity of Poppe Road and Buchanan Line, police went door-to-door to about eight homes in the area notifying residents of the situation.

Canniff stressed for people to stay away from the river’s shore in general.

There are areas of fast water, and others of thin ice.

“Safety is first and foremost. Stay away from the river,” he said.

Assistant Fire Chief Chris Case echoed Canniff’s concerns.

“I implore people to stay away from the ice. It’s an incredible sight, but one slip and in you go,” he said.

The Ontario government is taking action to help farmers affected by high levels of deoxynivalenol (DON) in this year’s corn crop, Monte McNaughton, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, announced recently.

The province is extending the repayment schedule for Commodity Loan Guarantee Program (CLGP), from Feb. 28 to Sept. 30, said McNaughton, who made the announcement with Ernie Hardeman, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

The deadline will be moved for both the 2018 and 2019 program years.

Casino construction ahead of schedule

Construction on the $36-million Gateway Casino in Chatham is about six weeks ahead of schedule, meaning the venue could be open to the public in early July.

A number of members of municipal council and Mayor Darrin Canniff attended a muddy walk through of the construction site at the corner of Richmond Street and Keil Drive in Chatham on Feb. 5, along with Gateway officials.

in Chatham for the first time since the groundbreaking here last July, said he’s pleased with the progress.

“It’s going to be a great entertainment facility,” he said.

Rob Mitchell, head of communications for Gateway, said construction is proceeding well.

“We managed to get the main property enclosed before the winter weather arrived,” he said. “That’s what was critical as we beat the elements.”

Originally slated for an opening of Aug. 15, officials are hopeful they can open the doors possibly as early as Canada Day.

Chatham Coun. Karen Kirkwood-Whyte said she’s excited about the new casino.

“It will be awesome. It will be another draw to Chatham-Kent,” she said. “It’s just the tip of the iceberg on what we have to offer. There are a lot of assets that need to be showcased.”

Canniff said the excitement is contagious.

“The feedback we’re hearing is mostly positive about it,” he said of the casino construction.

“This is adding 200 new jobs.

A job well done

by C-K With the flooding disaster of 2018 still fresh in the minds of people in Chatham-Kent, the recent ice jam and dike breech definitely raised some heart rates along with the waterway.

Knowing what can happen when there is an ice jam downriver, municipal officials were quick to react and declare a state of emergency so staff had the authority to act quickly should the dikes fail and large-scale flooding occur.

From the start, Mayor Darrin Canniff communicated with the public often and with upto-date facts, put staff and equipment in place in the areas of concern for a breech, and let adjacent property owners know the levy was leaking in spots.

In downtown Chatham along the river, emergency responders closed off areas of flooding to cars and the public as soon as possible.

Thankfully, a disaster was averted for most areas and the Thames receded enough to make most of us breathe a sigh of relief.

And that’s how you do it – be prepared to act, act authoritatively and communicate those actions to the public.

Boom.

Done.

Our thanks go to the mayor, municipal staff, our first responders and the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority officials who worked hard to make sure our people and property stayed safe.

With rain expected in the forecast this week, the municipality is still being cautious, and rightly so.

While the Thames is slowly returning to normal levels, rain can still cause serious problems while ice continues to clog parts of the river.

We may call out the municipality when we think it’s warranted, but we will also pat council and staff on the back for a job well done – and this is one of those cases of a job well done.

Now if only the sun would shine, the ice melt and the rain go away…

It seems only talk is cheap Sir: Re: Wage comparison badly needed, CK budget process underway How wonderful for the Chatham-Kent budget that there will be a significant savings made from changes made to the minimum wage mandate.

I am sure our citizens struggling to pay rent and all other bills as well as general family expenses will be very happy the C-K budget will benefit as they themselves continue to try and keep up with rising expenses on practi-

cally everything.

Most of these citizens making $14 an hour do not have any benefits for prescriptions, dental, eyeglasses, etc.

Repealing the promised $1 per hour increase is a disgrace, as it is desperately needed by many.

I also appreciated the information about some municipal staff making $200,000 per year being given a luxury SUV for their own personal use.

I agree a more fuel-ef-

ficient and lower-priced vehicle should be sufficient. These are taxpayer-funded vehicles.

If a luxury SUV is desired, I think the usage of $200,000 more than provides said staff member the ability to pay for his or her own private vehicle.

Wage earners making only $14 an hour are living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to stay out of debt if possible.

I also want to thank Bruce Corcoran and Robert Hakker for revealing to Chatham-Kent taxpayers the obscene wage and benefit inequities that exist between privateand public-sector jobs.

For the love of domestic animals Sir: My wife and I have been saving cats and dogs and bringing them into our house for nearly 40 years.

We love them as though they were our children.

That’s why I was overjoyed to read Sarah Schofield’s piece in The Chatham Voice about

Gary and Kelly O’Rourke’s volunteer work with PAWR (Pet and Wildlife Rescue), our Chatham animal rescue organization.

I understand Jason Hamm, manager of animal control services with PAWR Animal Con-

trol, has been busy inspecting local kennel premises.

I hope Jason will continue his campaign to check on all the kennel operators in the city. I often had conversations with the OSPCA about this issue and I was glad to

see PAWR take over.

I understand the OSPCA was supposed to inspect local kennels but they never got it done on a regular basis.

Now perhaps he can take a look at local backyard breeders!

CK Animal Rescue (CKAR) is hosting its Second Gigantic Indoor Garage Sale on March 16 at the John D. Bradley Centre in Chatham with all proceeds to support the organization, a local registered non-profit group.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Admission is free.

The Gigantic Garage Sale is a community-focused event that allows residents of Chatham-Kent to browse and shop the vendors that will be in attendance.

Two types of vendors are participating in this event.

Garage Sale vendors are those who are looking to get a head start on spring cleaning and decluttering

their basements and garages, and Business Vendors are those vendors selling products such as Avon, Scentsy, Tupperware or other unique products.

This is the second year for this event, and organizers said last year was a huge success.

Local businesses are invited to participate as a sponsor for this event and can contact CKAR for information.

Requests for vendor applications and Sponsor information can be made by calling 519-354-5000 or by emailing chathamkentanimalrescue@gmail.com.

CKAR was founded in 2010, based out of Chatham and operating in Chatham-Kent, Windsor-Essex, and Sarnia-Lambton.

deemed unadoptable due to abuse, disability or advanced age, providing short-term foster care for dogs and cats through its Purple Leash Program http://purpleleash.com/ for owners who are being hospitalized or fleeing domestic abuse and pro-

viding classroom presentations to school-aged children to teach them about compassion and kindness towards animals.

CKAR also holds Dog Wash fundraisers each month thanks to the Pet Value stores in Chatham and Wallaceburg. In Cha-

Supporters from the Kent Federation of Agriculture (KFA), the Salvation Army and Outreach for Hunger celebrate Food Freedom Day Saturday in Chatham. It was the day when the average Canadian has earned enough income to pay for his or her grocery bill for the entire year. Each year, the KFA and the community celebrate this day in a special way. This year, the KFA co-ordinated local food donations to both Salvation Army and Outreach for Hunger in Chatham-Kent. Monetary donations will be put towards food products for both organizations. Everyone is welcome to participate by donating to the local Salvation Army or Outreach for Hunger in Chatham-Kent.

Turbo show in the ’Burg The Chatham Voice

After the recent success of the Wallaceburg Arts Council’s Dala girls show at the Jeanne Gordon Theatre, the organization has shifted gears to the next show in its winter series, Turbo Street Funk, on Feb. 16.

Dala entertained the Arts Council audience with their vocal harmonies, quick-witted humour and a laid-back show.

Turbo Street Funk defies convention; whether they’re playing a festival, pub, concert hall, or even on a busy street corner, the infectious sounds of Turbo Street Funk always sound at home.

With a performance style rooted

in the New Orleans horn band tradition, Turbo Street Funk combines Top 40 hits with originals in an incendiary show that gets people moving.

Formed in 2011, Turbo Street Funk started as a professional busking band.

After Turbo Street Funk, the Arts Council will again shift gears as it welcomes Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers. That show is slated for April 13 at the Jeanne Gordon Theatre.

As an initial public engagement event, a Community Café is being scheduled to obtain public and stakeholder input to assist in defining transportation issues and potential projects, policies or programs. Municipal staff and community organizers joined Chatham-Kent councillors Karen Kirkwood-Whyte and Amy Finn in raising awareness for the Coldest Night of the Year event on Friday. This year, the event is being held Feb. 23. Canadians in more than 100 communities will participate in a walk to raise funds and awareness about the plight of homelessness.

The local walk, sponsored by NeighbourLink, will begin and end at The Hub, the former Pines Chapel, at 64 Ursuline Ave. Registration begins at 4 p.m., with opening ceremonies being held at 5 p.m., and the walk beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Black History at art gallery The Chatham Voice

Thames Art Gallery will observe Black History Month with a series of public events and family-friendly programs.

These special events recognize and celebrate the contributions that Black Canadians have, and continue to make to the cultural landscape of our country and our communities. All events are open to the public and free admission.

On Feb. 15, stop by to watch Sisters in the Struggle at 7 p.m. in the Kiwanis Theatre.

Made in the final years of the Studio D’s existence, the first publicly funded feminist film-production unit in the world, “Sisters in the Struggle” adopts the classic National Film Board documentary style, including talking heads and vérité shooting.

On Family Day, Feb. 18, take part in the poster-making activity.

The publication documents his retrospective exhibition, which focused on diverse representations of the Black body, held at the Thames Art Gallery last summer. With essays by writers Donna Lypchuk and Tiana Reid, this bilingual catalogue, signed by the artist, will be on sale for $25.

OK, so most everyone has seen the Febreze commercials where people go noseblind to the smells in their homes, right?

The same can be said of things that are out of place or in a minor state of disrepair in your home.

At least that’s the case with me.

It likely drives Mary a bit crazy at times. I have to be reminded to fix this, or get that back to where it belongs.

One area I delayed addressing was where some paint had peeled off the ceiling in our upstairs hallway. I had become all but blind to it.

Not so for Mary, or our friends Pete and Arlene. I was informed they were coming over on a recent weekend to tackle the ceiling, as they knew my ailing hip and knee limit what I can do these days.

But they’re always on the lookout for us as well. Pete’s the guy who tracked down the problem with our upstairs oven down to one switch. Unfortunately it was a $130 switch on a very old stove, so I put off getting it as I started looking for a newer used stove. Then the stovetop elements went on the thing.

Good thing we didn’t buy that one part!

So, on the morning Pete and Arlene were to come over to work on the ceiling, as we (OK, Mary) were scraping the loose paint off the area to be worked on, the dynamic duo called us from Habitat’s ReStore in Chatham. They found a stove in pristine condition and wanted us to come look at it.

We did just that, and wound up with a new (to us) stove that looked like it had barely been used.

I’m told Arlene guarded that stove until we could get there.

we went.

Of course, Pete and Arlene helped get it into our house, and our old one to the curb. As we went to install it, however, the power wouldn’t stay on. Pete, an electrician, determined it was the old 220-volt plug, so a trip to the hardware store and about $6 got us a replacement.

With a new stove in place, we set about working on the ceiling. Pete did the mudding, while Arlene and Mary opted to reorganize our kitchen. Before we knew it, the ladies had cleaned off all our counter space, opted for what would remain, and sent the rest of the stuff either into the trash or downstairs into a cupboard.

We have a one-cup coffee maker at home. I don’t drink coffee.

Brenna, the kid, doesn’t drink coffee (yet). Only Mary does, and I couldn’t remember the last time she used this machine. Into the basement it went.

We tried moving our large microwave around to increase the space options on the counter, but it wound up on the other side of the kitchen.

What we have now is a nice, clean counter and reorganized kitchen to go with the new stove.

Oh, and the ladies remained in mega-clean mode, even washing the walls in our entrance way and down the stairs into the basement, as well as our kitchen cupboards.

Citizen’s cop academy offered The Chatham Voice

The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) is once again offering the Citizen’s Police Academy program beginning March 6.

The academy is a program offered by the CKPS to enhance the partnership between the citizens of our community and their Police Service through an interactive educational opportunity.

The academy consists of 12

classes, which will be held every Wednesday night from 6:30 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Seniors are encouraged to attend.

Classes involve presentations and demonstrations by the chief of police, drugs and street crime, major crime investigation, identification and forensics, crime prevention, the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), traffic plus several other

The subjects taught are intended to make participants familiar with the operation of the CKPS. The course is not intended to train people to be police officers.

All “Citizen Academy” students will be afforded the opportunity to participate in a ride-along with a community patrol officer. Participants will be required to sign a waiver pri-

Participants must be of good moral character, subject of a background investigation, and be 19 years of age or older.

So, on a day where our buddies were to pop by to address a small part of our ceiling, they wound up finding us a replacement stove, helped revamp our kitchen, and aided in to pre-spring cleaning.

These two are our age, but their energy tops ours. It is, however contagious, so hanging out with them invigorates us.

Old and stupid

We have two bathrooms in our house. The downstairs one is essentially mine. It’s where I shave every morning, etc.

It’s the etc. that caused problems recently. The toilet became partially clogged. I tried plunging it repeatedly, but it remained slow draining. I realized I just had to wait it out for 24 hours and try again, letting water soften the clog.

The only problem is when I first wake up, my brain doesn’t fire up to top speed instantly.

I walked into the bathroom, and flushed the toilet...

And then I saw the bowl was three-quarters full BEFORE the flush cycle began.

I grabbed the plunger and a couple of quick strokes unclogged the toilet (I knew it!) but not before water spilled over the sides and onto the floor.

Fortunately it was clean water, as I’d flushed, plunged, flushed repeatedly the day before.

But the floor received an unexpected washing that morning, thanks to my stupidity.

Oh, and I had socks on at the time. Cold, wet socks just plain suck, especially on a cold ceramic floor in the middle of winter.

And it was all my own doing.
