Learning on the fly

What do humans have in common with fruit flies? According to Chatham-Kent native Taylor Lidster, a great deal, at least as the stomach turns.

Lidster, 23, is a Master’s student at Brock University, and is researching fruit flies as part of her Cell and Molecular Biology studies.

“I do research on fruit flies, as they are very similar to humans as far as genes, particularly genes that cause diseases,” she said.

Her area of focus is the gastro-intestinal system.

“I study the gut and inflammation – I figure out which genes cause disturbances in the gut.

We look at genes and the signalling pathways that are involved in inflammation, including the formation of tumours, and what pathways are involved in maintaining a healthy and stable gut.

“I’m able to see things

at high magnification and am able to look at the overall structure and compare it to healthy flies. We can see what things are going wrong.

And this translates directly to humans.”

Lidster has made a one-minute video to explain her research. And she’d like you to watch it at www.discover.brocku. ca/fly.

In fact, the video is entered in a contest put on by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

The top 75 entries, of which Lidster’s is one, moved onto the video stage, where each entrant makes a 60-second video and posts it to YouTube.

Each view from the public over a three-week period constitutes a vote for that video.

At one point during the workouts she asked Picard if he could catch a ball, as she wanted to throw an exercise ball back and forth with him. He said he didn’t think he could, but would give it a try. He caught it the first time.

Strong Kids has allowed more local residents, young and old, to experience the YMCA. That includes access to summer camps for kids, leadership programs for teens, healthy lifestyle education and fitness classes for adults, and access to a variety of programs for se-

niors.

Picard said his time at the Y has altered his life. Kathi Lomas McGee, YMCA CEO, said that’s the plan.

“Strong Kids has allowed us to change lives. There are so many stories where we’ve had the opportunity to have an impact on people. It’s why the Y does what it does,” she said.

Jim Loyer, campaign chair for Strong Kids, encourages people to get involved with the campaign.

Lidster said working with the tiny flies is pretty simple in terms of laboratory experiments.

“Fruit flies are so much easier to use than mice and rats.

You can use hundreds of flies in a trial. It’s a great model organism to use to study human diseases,” she said.

Competing in contests of science is nothing new to Lidster. Loss of plows impacts snow removal plans in C-K

The aftermath of a blizzard Feb. 9 left residents complaining about how built-up snow in Chatham’s downtown wasn’t cleaned up in a timely manner.

Miguel Pelletier, director of Public Works, said officials decided to let Mother Nature handle the situation.

The recent warm up helped flush away all of that snow.

Pelletier said the downtown core was messy in the wake of the Feb. 9 storm, which was followed up by freezing rain two days later.

“There was a buildup of snow on the curbs. When resources are available, that’s when we go back and remove it,” he said.

The problem this time around was that the resources weren’t available. A fire on Super Bowl Sunday at a municipal Public Works garage near Ridgetown destroyed six municipal trucks, including five that were configured for snow plowing.

“We had to reassign vehicles from different garages. In most cases we were able to meet the standards we have in place (for snow removal),” he said. “The things that suffer, however, are like going out later to do the lower level roads or to go back and remove some of the leftover snow.”

Pelletier hopes to have the plows replaced in time for next

winter.

The public can also do its part to help make it easier for municipal crews to clear our streets.

That includes getting their cars off the streets when there is a parking ban in effect.

Such a ban went into effect from Feb. 9-12 in Chatham-Kent, but Public Works plows still had to drive around a fair number of vehicles.

Pelletier said about 10 citations were issued to vehicle owners over that weekend.

Tickets to parked vehicles can actually be issued by three groups, he added: the police, bylaw officers and Public Works roads supervisors. But only the police can have vehicles towed.

While there were citations handed out recently, most people readily complied when asked to move their cars, he said.

“There were no vehicles towed during the last one (storm).

There were a bunch of people who moved their vehicles once police contacted them,” he said.

“Unless something was really in the way we didn’t enforce it (the parking ban).”

As for snow control efforts overall, Pelletier said it’s not just plowing and salting. The municipality has a contractor who can put down a liquid calcium solution, which he said helps prevent snow from packing and bonding to the road and forming ice.

Recent heavy snow had residents complaining about the quality of removal in Chatham’s downtown core. Public Works officials attributed delays in downtown cleanup to the loss of a half dozen trucks in a fire earlier this month at a garage in Ridgetown.

But to best make use of this process, it has to go down before the snow starts to fly. And to use it wisely, crews have to know when it’s warranted.

That’s where weather forecasting comes into play.

“We’re looking at ways to better forecast when to send out resources.

We need more accurate forecasting and that means more data,” Pelletier said.

The winter isn’t over yet, and he asks that the public does its part in the wake of heavy snowfall.

Don’t park on the street when there’s a parking ban in place, and don’t tailgate plows, or try to pass them.

Missing the point Was anyone really surprised by council’s decision to not ask residents what they think on the concept of cutting the size of council?

How about the fact that only Chatham councillors and one other – East Kent’s David Van Damme – voted in favour of adding such a referendum question on the electoral ballot this year?

Some of the councillors in the outlying areas have said they heard nothing but requests from constituents to keep council as it is. Others said the referendum statement, “Effective the term of Council beginning Dec. 2022, the number of councilors in Chatham-Kent be reduced” was too vague.

To the latter, the question was to gauge interest, not to set definitive reduction numbers. Council could be trimmed to 12, or eight, or whatever, but first off, the idea was to see what the public wanted. That was the intent of Chatham Coun. Doug Sulman when he put forward his notice of motion on the matter.

To the former, this is part of what’s right about council, and unfortunately about what is wrong with council as well.

Councillors should represent the people who specifically voted for or against them; the people of their ward. If they hear overwhelmingly in their ward to vote a certain way, it can easily be argued that’s what they should do. Those are the people who elected them.

But because too few of the wards represent a blend of rural and urban constituents, such a process can skew the voting. Rural and urban needs can at times be vastly different. It’s being able to juggle those needs and do what’s best for the majority of Chatham-Kent that truly matters.

Changing the ward system to give each councillor a mix of rural and urban residents to represent would help provide improved rural-urban balance and understanding. Perhaps, as suggested and sadly dismissed in the past, the base for this could be looking at the municipality as a pie, with Chatham at the centre. Slice it up in geographic pieces that are representative of population. Each piece would have some of Chatham in it, and a lot of rural and small-town in C-K in there as well.

But there should be fewer slices of that pie. For starters, our population has declined significantly since amalgamation. Fewer citizens, fewer councillors.

Council needs to be resized and the ward structure altered, yet 11 councillors can’t see that need.

No. Sir: On Feb. 5, local media indicated that the North Kent Wind project, owned by Samsung and Pattern Energy as major partners and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and Walpole Island as minor partners, was not responsible for the troubles with the water wells in the former Chatham Township, according to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Can anybody really say that they expected a different result? It is the MOECC that issued the permit to allow the wind farm to be built using suspect information suppled by the project owners.

Did they base their conclusion on “scientific fact” or the theory that it is just a coincidence?

How did another scientific study come up with a 14,000-times increase in black shale particles and the MOECC didn’t?

Did the MOECC even do any water-detailed analysis? If they did, they should make them public.

The MOECC was supposed to have monitored the construction to make sure there was no environmental impact.

They were supposed to

have monitored any reported impact to the aquifer that was reported to them. Did they?

They had the typical government and government agency answer to the complaints.

“We take all reports very seriously.” Yes, they do, but DO nothing.

As a matter of fact, Premier Wynne gave that very same answer when she was in Chatham and was given a bottle of the “problem water” and was told of the difficulties being experienced by those families with contaminated wells – and she DID nothing. Perhaps she does not realize that there is a small chunk of Ontario that sticks outside of the Greater Toronto Area because that large area was wise enough to not vote in any Liberal MPPs. She has basically only urban support.

Some of the residents in the former Dover Township, depending on the aquifer, have been experiencing these difficulties for years with no support or help from any government agency, municipal or provincial.

It seems that, according to preliminary work being

done at the Otter Creek Wind Farm site, that they plan to move forward with that project.

Will the provincial government or perhaps the MOECC get off their asses and do something to stop this aquifer destruction? Will they let all of Ontario’s aquifers be destroyed?

The first five turbines built in Dover affected water wells, the next fifty-five affected more water wells, the next in Chatham township affected water wells. If you keep doing the same thing, can you expect different results? How many will be affected by the Otter Creek Project? Are our leaders slow learners?

Another strange occurrence recently is that, although the mayor bragged about the increase in building permits and the taxes derived from the wind turbines, our individual property taxes continue to spiral upward.

One resident seems to question a lot of the municipal expenditures and is given information only through the Freedom of Information Act. Perhaps many more residents

should be questioning the prudence of the Chatham-Kent expenses and staffing.

I also found it strange that the police chief needed more finances to patrol the large area of Chatham-Kent. Has it really increased in size since amalgamation?

There are many more examples of where the average citizen either cannot personally finance or obtain the necessary information to call out the perpetrators of poor judgment. What can be done about continuous poor decisions?

Is our system of government broken or is it that we have elected people that do not properly look after the needs of the residents? Do we have too many diplomats calling the shots who are untouchable because they are not elected, draw high salaries and have nobody who is elected with the gumption to remove them from their positions?

I believe that we have foxes guarding the hen house and we will have to continue buying hens to replace what they devour.

Is C-K a democracy or self-serving haven?

Sir: Seven out of 18 councillors voted to have the following question be placed on the 2018 fall election ballot – “Effective the term of Council beginning 2022, the number of councillors be reduced.”

YES or NO. Some opposing arguments: (1) councillors are already spread too thin; (2) wouldn’t save money anyway; (3) we are being represented just fine as is; [4] need more information before we vote.

Please consider the following. Amalgamation was intended to bring us a single-tier municipality, one jurisdiction in all areas of C-K governance, with one of many end results of having to file only one annual tax return to the province. Unfortunately, it has resulted in a two-tier council system in a single-tier municipality.

Coun Sulman’s well-intended statement implying that democracy “has left the building” has laser accuracy. What we were left with is democracy for the “municipality of the City of Chatham” with our rural areas as an optional side order.

During the recent dissenting vote, the rationale by those councillors disallowing citizens to have a say, whether to reduce council or not, is akin to the same rationale used to not have a free Ontario

Provincial Police presentation to council on the cost of policing done their way. Council’s rationale at that time cited better local policing with better control. In fact, there is no loss of calibre of policing levels or control. Both OPP and municipal levels of policing are legislated under the same policy and would allow C-K to retain its local police board.

Despite these facts, councillors created skyhooks and fantasy tablets, replacing facts with conjecture regarding the OPP project.

This same mentality was demonstrated recently with the YES! or NO! question to consider a council reduction. In other words, the vote was only asking for the question to be placed on the ballot, nothing more. Those councillors voting no, prohibited residents from voicing their opinions.

When amalgamated in 1997, Chatham-Kent had 110,000 people with 17 councillors, or about 6,400 people per councillor.

Today, we have about 101,500 people or about 6,000 people per councillor governed under an urban council (Chatham) of six votes and a fragmented rural representation of only an average of 2.2 councillors (votes) per rural ward. Yet we are

supposed to be amalgamated (meaning to combine and unite to form one organization and structure).

Our current set up allows for what is known as “a deal-making” system. In order for individual wards to get what they want, it becomes a “you scratch my back and we’ll scratch yours” routine. This creates a potential for a very prejudice system, invariably costing taxpayers more than it should. Even the province admitted they did not consider the deal-making potential when amalgamating.

In order to have an amalgamated council to match an amalgamated jurisdiction absent of bias between urban and rural and create balanced and fair representation, Chatham-Kent would require

a six ward system, having two elected people per ward.

Each ward would be comprised of urban and rural population where each rural ward would take a bite out of urban Ward 6. The City of Chatham would be proportionately displaced and not be able to have a majority vote, subsequently we would have all of Chatham-Kent equally represented.

The two elected people in each ward would have to equally and fairly represent their respective urban-rural riding or not get re-elected. Each councillor in each ward would have about 8,400 people to represent- well within practiced guidelines, compared to our current ratio of 6,000 people per councillor.

This past November, local police officer Andrew Gaiswinkler was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, which is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Gaiswinkler was rushed by ambulance to London and immediately began chemotherapy. He has been in and out of hospital since, receiving blood

transfusions and other medical treatment.

The veteran constable is on the One Match registry, awaiting a stem cell donor and transplant.

According to Point2Homes’ list of Top Millennial Hot Spots in 2018, Chatham-Kent ranks 67th of Canada’s top 85 cities for millennials.

Canadian cities were ranked based on income, housing affordability, unemployment rate, life satisfaction, low crime rate, health care, climate, level of education, and the percentage of millennials in the total population.

The top three ranked cities weren’t the largest in Canada and seven of the top 10 best cities for millennials have a population under 500,000.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent and council have been focused on resident attraction and retention in the community since 2011, when the census indicated a 4.2 per cent decline of our population. Efforts targeted young people (aged 15-39), immigrants, and active retiree populations to address the decline, and continue through the CK Plan 2035.

“News like the Top Millennial Hot Spot list shows these efforts are paying off and underscores the importance of community-wide initiatives that help secure Chatham-Kent’s future for upcoming generations,” Mayor Randy Hope said in a release.

The baCK to Chatham-Kent initiative was launched in response to the notable population declines occurring in the 15-39 year age group in 2011. The campaign celebrates young people that have chosen to

return to Chatham-Kent and encourages others to do so by promoting and connecting them to local opportunities.

The latest census numbers, from 2016, report a significant reduction in the total population decline (to two per cent) and improvements in key age cohorts for young people.

The 30-34 year old demographic increased between 2011 and 2016 by 5.4 per cent (from -8.7 per cent), and the rate of decline for those aged 2024 (-8.3 per cent) and 35-44 (-4 per cent) have improved from -13.7 per cent and -14.9 per cent respectively.

These trends support a positive picture of Chatham-Kent’s increasing attractiveness to young people and their desire to make Chatham-Kent home.

“After living in the big city (Toronto), I couldn’t wait to slow down the pace and return home to my family and friends. The cost of living in Chatham-Kent is also incredible.

We purchased a 10 acre lake front property for the same price as our 850 square foot condo in Toronto,” said Rosanna Mitchell, who recently moved baCK to Chatham-Kent.

“It’s no surprise that Chatham-Kent would make this list,” said Steve Carroll, President of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors.

“The latest stats in the CKAR out of town home buyers survey show 30 per cent of homes sold in C-K are to people from outside the area.”

I’ve ranted numerous times on the frustrating driving habits of Chathamites, especially their poor turning habits (Chatham Left, anyone?).

And I’ve detailed parking lot miscues, such as driving through vacant spots rather than using the marked lanes, even when lots are busy and visibility is limited (North Maple Mall).

But I need to discuss parking a little further, specifically in crowded lots where kids are dropped off and picked up.

I’m talking about places such as schools, dance studios, and other venues. These are places where scheduling can put a large number of parents, children and vehicles into a small area.

School staff see the crazy driving habits on display by parents regularly. That’s why they structure the progression in their lots to get cars in and out as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Only too many parents are selfish to the point that they obviously believe the school lot guidelines don’t apply to them. Either that or they are oblivious to signage and pavement markings.

I’ve mentioned the drop-off point for students at Ursuline College.

I often drop my teen there in the morning, and am constantly surprised to see how many parents ignore the “No Left Turn” sign posted at the exit. It’s intended to speed up the flow of traffic folks. If you have to head in the opposite direction for a bit and then hang a few rights to get back on course, so be it.

Except, as mentioned, some parents choose to ignore that sign and would rather wait for an opening on busy Grand Avenue to turn left, tying up others behind them needlessly.

And then there are the dance par-

The situation, regardless of what pastime the kids are enjoying, is always similar: Crowded parking lot at certain times of the evening as parents are picking up and/or dropping off kids.

The simplest thing to do is for everyone to understand the dimensions of the parking lot, where the entrance/exit is (heck, you have to use it to come into the lot in the first place) and to keep that open.

Also, be aware that if you arrive and it’s busy/full, if you are back at the same time and day on a weekly basis, chances are it will always be busy/full.

Plan accordingly. Don’t try to force your way into the lot. Don’t park in the middle of the lot, even for a few minutes, as chances are you’ll block someone in.

Are your needs more important than theirs?

And don’t park in such a manner as to block the entrance.

These issues happen regularly where my daughter dances.

I generally park on the street to avoid the hassle. But I also park along a section of sidewalk that some people seem to think is the entrance/exit (umm, there’s a full curb, people), so I periodically get dirty looks.

And then there are people who park on the wrong side of the road, all for their own convenience.

Interactive trail map lauded The Chatham Voice

An interactive map highlighting the nearly 60 local trails in Chatham-Kent is expected to be a major factor in their increased use, according to Dianne Flook, Chair of the Chatham-Kent Trails Council.

“It’s an amazing achievement,” Flook said of the map, which can be found on the Chatham-Kent municipal website

The site features a map with pins designating each trail’s location as well as photos and information detailing the length of trail, its characteristics and features.

“We’ve come a long way and this tool will take us even farther,” Flook said. “We have printed trail maps in the past

This way, people can call them up on their phones when they are out and about.”

Flook had high praise for municipal employees Genevieve Champagne and Jeff Bray of Community Attraction and Leisure Services and Mike Smith of Information Technology Services for their efforts.

“This never would have been

possible without their untold hours of dedication and technical expertise,” she said. “They truly responded to a real need in our community.”

With 91 kilometres of municipal, conservation area and provincial park trails in the community, Flook said there is a wide variety to choose from.

She said her committee is comprised of volunteers from across Chatham-Kent and

plans to update the page with cycling and water trails as well as more walking and hiking trails as they are developed.

The group also has its own website at http://chathamkenttrails.ca “We’re looking at making this a healthier, more active community,” she said. “If we give people healthy options, they will make healthy choices.”

Native student trustee added to LKDSB The Chatham Voice

Trustees for the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) recently unanimously approved the appointment of an Indigenous Student Trustee position on the board, beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.

The LKDSB currently has two student trustees serving as members of the board. However, trustees expressed support for adding an additional Indigenous Student Trustee position beginning in the 2018- 2019 school year to further reflect Indigenous students’ perspectives in board decisions.

Following a decision in November to explore the possibility, senior administration investigated the requirements in the Education Act for appointing an Indigenous Student Trustee; funding for the position; reviewed the LKDSB’s Policies, Regulations and Administrative Procedures; as well as consulted with Thames Valley District School Board, which is the first school board in Canada to elect an Indigenous Student Trustee.

Senior administration recommended LKDSB self-identified Indigenous secondary students elect the Indigenous Student Trustee using a similar process used to elect the current LKDSB Student Trustees.

Members of the LKDSB Indigenous Liaison Committee will also be consulted.

Thank you to our cousin, Stan Blonde, for honouring Dad by having the police honour guards and escorts for Dad’s final journey. Thank you to the CWL for the wonderful luncheon. Finally, thank you to all the staff at Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home for your care and compassion.

Dad was a kind and humble man and a great story teller. He was loved by many and will be missed. Remember him through acts of kindness and in the stories you share.

Micro Age earns IT award

A Chatham business received high praise recently, being named as one of Canada’s 50 best managed IT companies.

Micro Age Chatham made the list, compiled by tech firm Techno Planet.

In fact, according to Wally Romansky, general manager of Micro Age Chatham, a total of six Micro Age locations made the list out of 500 businesses in the running.

Romansky said Techno Planet is a business development company, and it had a long list of questions for the business to complete.

“There were about 200 questions. It was a detailed report,” he said.

Romansky said the award highlights how well the company operates.

“We have monthly meetings with other Micro Age stores to set goals and accountability,” he said.

“This sets consistency.”

Romansky added Micro Age staff are the lifeblood of the business.

“Our staff have been with us a long time. This is a team award. The whole team is committed to solid customer service and to continue to improve,” he said. “Some of our senior techs have been with us over 20 years.”

Romansky said he had no idea Micro Age Chatham would be an award recipient.

“We were pleased to be recognized. It was a surprise, but with the good team we have here, it’s much appreciated,” he said.
