“Companies do believe in Chatham-Kent,” Hope said. “It’s gotten to the point there is no significant industrial space available.”

To that end, he said the municipality is working on creating 150,000 square feet of new factory floor.

Having readily available space fills a constant need.

“Companies want to be in within 90 days,” he said. “But building a factory takes at least six to nine months.”

Hope also defended and detailed spending for international travel.

“Because we live in a global economy, we have to raise our profile. We have to be on the front of the stage,” he said. “We travel to support our businesses as well. We saved one from bankruptcy and allowed another to expand.”

Annual Vegetation Management Program CN is required to clear its rights-of-way from any vegetation that may pose a safety hazard. Vegetation on railway right-ofway, if left uncontrolled, can contribute to trackside fires and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure. As such, for safe railway operations, the annual vegetation control program will be carried out on CN rail lines in the province of Ontario. A certified applicator will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks (mainly the graveled area (the ballast)). All product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments and municipal water supplies will be met.

Know what you can touch or take

A Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer just wishes the public would do its homework before heading out to enjoy nature.

Mark Curry, speaking at the recent Crime Stoppers luncheon, said most conservation issues that crop up in and around Chatham-Kent could be avoided – if people took the time to do a little reading on the Internet.

“Generally, we see resource users not taking the time to determine what is legal and what isn’t,” he said.

That includes not taking turtles home with them, picking wild ginseng, and taking proper precautions when going hunting and fishing.

Curry, who has worked in Chatham-Kent since

2009, said conservation officers here primarily make “hook and bullet” – fishing and hunting – compliance checks, but also have to enforce 27 pieces of legislation.

Priorities for 2017-18 for the MNR include species at risk, invasive species, moose, and hunter safety.

In terms of endangered species, herptiles – reptiles and amphibians – are atop the area of concern locally.

Curry said species such as the snapping and spiny soft shell turtles are on the list. It’s illegal to kill, possess, buy or sell such species.

There is a snake in the region that’s also on the list, the eastern fox snake.

Sturgeon are a fish on the list, due to the huge demand for their eggs to make caviar. There is no season locally for sturgeon, so they are illegal to even actively fish for.

Furthermore, there’s a plant that can be found locally that’s on the endangered species list – the American ginseng.

Curry said ginseng is desired for perceived medicinal properties in certain cultures.

“There’s a big market for that,” he said. “There is a lot of farmed ginseng near Simcoe.”

But digging it up in the

wild is illegal.

Ginseng in its natural habitat is generally found in old growth forest, and can take years to mature.

Protecting species is also made more difficult as people bring in invasive species to the province, Curry said. From phragmites plants to fish such as the goby, Asian carp and snakeheads, these species can rapidly take over ecosystems.

Curry said huge tanker trucks used to bring live Asian carp across the border from the U.S., but they now must already be eviscerated before coming into the country. The extreme measure was necessary, he said.

“If you were to drain the tanks and put ice in there and later put water back in, fish that appeared dead came back to life,” he said.

Do we need it?

The empty lot that housed the former Navistar plant on Richmond Street in Chatham definitely needs to be filled with something, but the big plans spitballed by Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope definitely need a second sober thought.

The idea isn’t a terrible one to combine a twin-pad arena with a transportation hub, but there are several considerations to keep in mind.

The first that comes to mind is the environmental nightmare that is considered to be under that property.

A proper look at the site and remediation plans need to addressed before even thinking about digging up the dirt.

Our bet is that much of the property is a brownfield.

Second, with Erickson Arena, St. Clair College and the Kinsmen Arena all in play, do we need a twinpad, and if so, do we close the municipally owned facilities to save money?

And the third, but biggest road block to such a project moving forward is who is going to pay for it? Yes, it benefits hockey organizations and maybe figure skating, plus hotels and restaurants in the vicinity, but what does the rest of the community get out of it?

Will already tapped out donors in Chatham-Kent be expected to come up with millions of dollars?

Are there any federal/provincial dollars available?

And how will you explain to the rest of Chatham-Kent, who already think Chatham sees itself as the centre of the universe, how they will benefit from another municipally owned potential money-pit?

There are the doers in this town who can probably tell us exactly how to make this happen and how to pay for it, and hopefully the powers that be will tap their wealth of knowledge.

Needed in this area more than new arenas is something like what The Wheels had with children’s activities so our kids have a safe and fun place to go in town, instead of hanging around the mall or in parking lots.

Whatever is decided, hopefully it benefits the entire municipality, and if the majority thinks that is a twin-pad arena, then make it so.

More changes needed in education Sir: One of several problems that dealt with the lack of Indigenous voice was the totem pole being carved without Indigenous acknowledgement.

A group of four individuals who attended Techmesh Secondary School, part of the Kent County Board Of Education, made a carving of a totem pole to show acknowledgment for their school pride. They did not, however, think that the board would take down the carving in 2018.

How come the school board was not skeptical at a time when the totem pole was first built? The Kent County Board of Education did not include any forms of Indigenous teachers, Indigenous education, or Indigenous practises in Tecumseh Secondary School, even though there are two indigenous communities, Moraviantown and Walpole Island, which are merely 20 minutes away from the city of Chatham.

Andrew Ramsz, one of the people who carved the totem pole between 1970 and 1972, remembers the principal and vice principal being very supportive, and did not receive any objections. He believed people from the

administration board were in support of having the totem pole carved and installed at the school.

The Lambton Kent School Board sides with the Indigenous community to come to its conclusion of taking down the totem pole at Tecumseh Public School. The board needs to look back and acknowledge their involvement by allowing the totem pole to exist and to also acknowledge why they had a lack of Indigenous involvement.

Why is it that now the LKDSB took down the carving but it did not do in the last 46 years that it existed? And why is it now they board is deciding to change the name of Tecumseh Public School slogan to the Timberwolves? How come these changes are being done now when they could’ve made these changes in the past? These are crucial questions to be asked.

They need to also acknowledge that the lack of Indigenous teachers in their schools is having a negative impact on strengthening their critical thinking with Indigenous students having a lack of representation

in the education system. In order to move forward, the school board needs to accept the problems they are facing today and look for alternatives to get students engaged in inclusive learning.

Also, diversity of Indigenous history textbooks is needed, because they disvalued events that involved contribution from not only European immigrants, but also from Indigenous who have lived in this country for centuries, so that the students can examine more than one narrative.

Having Indigenous teachers who can teach their own history will give students confidence and provide positive role models to Indigenous youth; they can inspire excellence in the community, and can have a deeper connection with racialized students.

Having a variety of different voices can provide potential for understanding systematic barriers that prevent students from succeeding. Without these Indigenous teachers in the education system, there is a lack of representation, no personal experience of having

overcome obstacles, no level of intimacy, and little ethnic knowledge.

This can only accelerate cultural appropriation and exploitation, and it certainly forces students to become indoctrinated.

To solve this problem, there needs to be a social justice class at the elementary level that teaches morality and ethics with a combination of history through the lens of Indigenous people and other minorities.

A teacher with a historically marginalized voice and understanding of systematic barriers can give different perspectives from a minority group lens rather than from a colonial lens. This can give marginalized people an opportunity to represent authentic voices into the education system.

Raising the issue of systemic barriers and a lack of equity at a young age can enhance the students’ critical thinking which can be used to create solutions to this lack of diversity and help eradicate disengagement and promote more inclusive learning.

Chatham fireworks a go June 30

The fireworks are a go for Canada Day celebrations in Chatham this year, but organizers are

looking for more donations to help fuel the rest of the festivities.

due to a lack of funding.

But Kevin Neill, treasurer for the committee, said a donor came forward to sponsor the fireworks.

“At this point, they said they don’t want their identity revealed. We’re certainly going to honour and respect that,” he said.

Neill said having the money for the fireworks, which will light off June 30 at St. Clair College, weather permitting, is a “great relief” for the committee, but its members are looking for about $10,000 in additional donations.

“We’re still facing other challenges. We are still sitting about $10,000 shy to be able to do everything we want to be able to put on for the community,” he said. “We only need about 500 people donating $20 each and we will be able to do everything we had hoped.”

To help raise the needed funding, the committee has started a GoFundMe page. It launched May 21 and can be accessed at

gf.me/u/irbi8v.

He confirmed there would also be a parade and entertainment in Tecumseh Park on July 1.

Like money, the committee is also seeking volunteers as well as vendors for Canada Day in the park.

“It’s been a tough year, not only for finding the cash, but for getting people to come out to help lighten the workload,” Neill said. “A relatively small group of us is putting things together.”

He added volunteers are needed for Canada Day, from manning the barriers along the parade route to cleaning up in the park as the day progresses.

“Last year was great.

There was virtually no cleanup at the end as the volunteers kept it clean throughout the day,” Neill said.

As for the future, Neill said the committee will look at a variety of funding options.

“We’re going to be con-

tinuing to seek grant money.

Unfortunately, we were turned down by a lot of places this year.

We’ll get an earlier start next year for that, and pursue corporate sponsorship,” he said.

With the tighter budget this year, Neill said the committee opted at its most recent meeting to

slash some of its spending.

“We cut a lot of our expenses. Hopefully, we can still put on a good show,” he said. “We had planned to have entertainment at the fireworks. But we are unable to do that this year. The cost of sound systems and the stage made it prohibitive.”

Bruce Corcoran dumped what I had left into the Egg. There was one particularly humongous piece – part of a charred log, really.

Normally, the big pieces are best placed on the bottom, to help increase air circulation and to burn gradually if they’re needed in a long cook. But I stupidly left it right up top.

I decided instead to light the charcoal away from the big piece.

Duh. The whole idea is to let the burn expand so most of the coals in the Egg are burning. Of course, the underside of the big piece caught on fire.

That’s the problem. It burned rather than glowed.

When charcoal is at its optimum cooking temperature, it will glow and give off a little flame, and very little smoke. What smoke it does give is wispy and white in colour.

When the temperature isn’t right, it can burn too hot, or smolder.

Smoldering gives off darker smoke, and that can impact the taste of the food being cooked.

On that day, I cooked some chicken breasts and peppers. Unfortunately, all you could taste when you bit into either, regardless of the seasoning, was the bitter smoke.

Now, as many know, you can add wood chips of a specific tree type to flavour your food. But you only add a few and place them strategically so they don’t burn all at

The frozen burgers will do in a pinch when people pop over and that’s all you want to cook, but from now on, we’re treating ourselves to the homemade variety.

In the coming days, I’m heading back outside when my daughter’s dance schedule permits. I’m thinking more burgers, chicken and some pork chops are in order.

The next big cook comes up in early June. The Dance Moms are planning on having a tailgate meal between the afternoon and evening recitals. I’ve been tasked with doing pulled pork.

That means the pork shoulder goes on the Egg the Friday evening, cooks overnight, and will be finished about noon the next day. That means the sweet smell of slow-cooking pork will permeate the backyard overnight and into the Saturday morning.

And they generally don’t smolder.

I’ve used cherry and apple wood chips for longer cooks, such as pork shoulder, but also have used them on pork chops or pork loin.

As for mesquite, we’ve used those wood chips on short, hot, steak cooks. The flavour of mesquite is a bit stronger, and is suited to shorter cooks as a result, in my opinion.

We ate the chicken and peppers, but it was my weakest cook yet on the Egg. The next time, I moved the rest of the big piece to the bottom of the burn bowl and covered it with fresh, smaller pieces of charcoal. It had no impact on our cooking of juicy homemade hamburgers.

I’ve enjoyed a good number of frozen burgers on the Egg in the past, from various sources, but we were reminded how much better fresh, homemade burgers are. You can spice the meat all the way through, rather than just on the surface, for starters.

I’ve lived in Chatham-Kent Leamington all my life, and I’m passionate about making our community better. I’ve been a grassroots organizer, leading campaigns to protect public services. I’ve mentored women in technology, and in my daily work I support students with hands–on training in skilled trades that gets them ready for the work force.

Our community is full of hard-working, dedicated, welcoming people. But after decades of Liberal and Conservative governments, essential services have been slashed and living costs are soaring.

Many people are disappointed and more than a little fed up with being told to choose between bad and worse – that hope is too much to ask for. I’m running to be your MPP as part of Andrea Horwath’s NDP because I’m fed up too.

I know we deserve better. And I know that if we come together, we can make it happen.

Rick Nicholls, born and raised in Chatham-Kent, was first elected to the Ontario Legislative Assembly in October of 2011.

Rick strongly believes in building solid working relationships not only with those at Queen’s Park but also within his constituency.

Throughout his private sector career with a major truck assembly plant, a major natural gas utility and in the training and professional development sector, Rick’s entrepreneurial spirit has allowed him work with some of Canada’s most renowned companies via the Nicholls Training Group. His work has taken him throughout Canada and the United States extensively – including an opportunity to twice address the Canadian Embassy to the United Nations.

At home, Rick is a proud husband, father, and grandfather, and has been an active member in the Chatham-Kent community. Rick has been involved with the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce, an award winner at the international level with the Chatham-Kent Toastmasters, and president of Gideon’s International of Canada – Chatham, coaching little league baseball and sponsoring girl’s minor soccer.

Rick’s personal goal is to be accessible and accountable” to his constituents.

Margaret has been advocating for the constituents of Chatham-Kent for over 30 years.

Margaret has worked for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent in a variety of roles. She is a Life Skills Specialist and facilitates workshops for participants on Ontario Works Assistance. Margaret has obtained her Honours Degree in Social Work, her Bachelor of Education, as well as having her Life Skills Coaches Certificate.

Her community involvement includes past postings of secretary to the Chatham Kent Service Coordinators Networking Group and a community assessment team member in Chatham Kent. She currently is a member of the Leamington Mennonite Home Gala Committee. She has held previous board positions such as a member of the South Essex Community Council Leamington.

Margaret is the recipient of the Tri-County Literacy Promotion of Education Award.

Margaret is mother to a daughter and son and enjoys spending time with her family.

Mark is a first generation Canadian who grew up in Chatham-Kent, spending his teenage years helping at his parents fruit stand business.

Would you make changes, and if so, what, to the Green Energy Act?

Addressing climate change and building a green energy economy is one of the most important challenges facing our province and our world. Unfortunately, Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals have made a total mess of this critical issue. Their plan revolves around private power and ignores the needs of communities.

But we also can’t afford to go from Kathleen Wynne’s bad privatized system to Doug Ford’s worse privatized system.

That’s why Andrea Horwath and the NDP are focused on putting our system back in public hands and making sure that we are able to respond to the concerns of communities like Chatham-Kent Leamington. That’s why Andrea Horwath’s NDP was the first party that committed to Water Wells First’s Health Hazard Study.

Would you alter the Green Energy Act?

If elected, the PC government will scrap the Green Energy Act. It is not that we are opposed to renewable energy, but the energy must be affordable, something that the GEA with the Industrial Wind Turbines and solar panels are not.

How do you think the increase in minimum wage has impacted the Ontario economy?

After 20 years of Liberal and PC governments, life has become more unaffordable than ever for far too many families. PCs and Liberals alike have made deep cuts to public services and made privatizing public assets a priority. And while costs have continued to soar over these two decades, wages have flatlined. Minimum wage increases are a vital part of making our economy work for everyone. They lead to lower employee turnover, more on-the-job training, and higher productivity. Raising minimum wage also makes for better, more productive workplaces. A $15 an hour minimum wage will boost the spending power of residents struggling to make ends meet. This money will be recycled back into the economy, which is good for business.

What do you feel our health-care spending priority should be?

The last Conservative government in Ontario closed 28 hospitals, axed over 7,000 beds and laid off 6,000 nurses. Wynne’s Liberals froze hospital operating budgets for four years in a row and

forced hospitals to make even deeper cuts to get by. Now, Ontario faces a hospital overcrowding crisis. We can do so much better. Andrea Horwath’s NDP will end overcrowding and hallway medicine by making sure hospitals are adequately funded and that funding keeps pace with inflation, demographic change and recognizes the unique needs of communities like ours. We will also make much-needed investments to replace or repair rural hospitals. And we will immediately open 2,000 new hospital beds and shorten surgery wait times by allowing hospitals to remove caps that force cancellations and delays.

The province has a debt of more than $320 billion, running a deficit this year of about $6.7 billion. What has to change?

In Ontario, PC and Liberal governments alike have slashed taxes for the most wealthy and well-connected people and the most profitable corporations. Andrea Horwath’s NDP will protect low and middle income folks by asking the very wealthy to pay a bit more. We’ll end corporate income-tax giveaways and loopholes that allow big corporations to claim small business exemptions.

The government has been paying excessive incentives to wind and solar offshore companies for turbines that have been proven to create health issues for individuals, lowered property values, and have resulted in driving electricity prices so high that many people are having to choose between heating or eating.

What should be done to stop the increases to Ontario electricity prices?

Electricity prices continue to spiral upwards.

Not only does this create financial issues for residences, but also for businesses.

Businesses are finding it tough to compete in a global market as the playing field is not

level. Many businesses are leaving Ontario and going elsewhere including the USA or Mexico where the cost of doing business is much lower.

To stop electricity increases, a PC government will immediately stop any turbine developments from occurring. The facts remain, Chatham-Kent Leamington has lost over 12,000 manufacturing jobs since 2003 and with that, many people were forced to leave our area in order to find work.

How has the increase in minimum wage impacted the Ontario economy?

The increase in minimum wage has negatively impacted business. Let me be clear, our PC Party is not against helping people get ahead in life in order to provide for their family. However, this increase happened without proper consultation and

happened too quickly.

Businesses did not have time to react. The Liberal government has had 15 years to get it right and now, because of an election they have decided the timing was right (for them) to introduce many new regulations to Bill 148. Now, the person who was working 24 hours per week and now receiving an extra $60 per week due to the increase in minimum wage, is finding their hours cut back to 20 hours per week. They are no further ahead financially but the cost of doing business has driven the cost of goods and services even higher. No one wins!

What do you feel the health-care spending priority should be?

We invested in building electricity system that people and businesses can count on. And in closing our coal-fire power plants, our children don’t even remember what a smog day was—because it’s been years since we’ve had one.

We reached a point in 2016 where after years of necessary investments in clean, reliable energy, there was no longer any need for further procurement. That’s why we suspended the procurement of large renewable energy projects back then, a decision that saved up to $3.8 billion in costs.

Ontario electricity prices continue to spiral upward. What should be

done to stop the increases?

Over the last several years people told us that electricity prices had increased too much, and too quickly. And while these increases were due, in part, to making the necessary investments to create a clean and reliable system—fixing what the Liberal government had inherited from the Conservatives.

The Fair Hydro Plan has made energy bills 25% lower on average for families, small businesses and farms, and low-income families.

For us in Chatham-Kent -- Leamington, there are people seeing decreases as high as 40 - 50%.

ening the wait times in the ER and moving forward immediately in cutting red tape and making it easier for LTC facilities to increase the number of long-term beds for our aging population.

Our goal is 15,000 new LTC beds in the first five years plus an additional 15,000 in the next five years. We will also be spending $3.8 B in mental health as well as one of my continuing goals - to advocate for more doctors, nurses and PSWs. I will do everything within my power to ensure that Chatham-Kent gets the doctors and health care professionals we deserve to have.

What has to change in terms of spending?

The PC Party has stated that the province has a major spending problem.

The projected 2018 deficit

of $6.7 B is a severe understatement as indicated by the Auditor General, Bonnie Lysak. She, along with the Financial Accountability Officer, have clearly stated that the Liberal deficit is closer to $12 B. The Liberals have run the debt from $123 B in 2003 to over $320 B in only 15 years. The NDP tripled the debt when they were in power from 1990 to 1995 and almost bankrupted the province under Bob Rae. An

NDP government will tax, tax, tax because they are promising everybody everything. A PC government will reign in excessive government waste by “spending within our means”. We cannot strap future generations with excessive debt. We will develop policies that will attract businesses and good paying jobs while at the same time, protect our most vulnerable people as that is the right thing to do.

The families and small businesses in our community are now paying less on average here than in many other similar jurisdictions.

How do you think the increase in minimum wage has impacted the Ontario economy?

As Liberals, we want to create the strongest possible economic climate so that small and large businesses alike can grow and thrive.

But we know that some businesses have struggled with the transition to a higher minimum wage. That’s why we brought in $500 million in new initiatives over the next three years to support small businesses in Ontario - including their taxes, from 4.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent.

And we Eliminated the Capital Tax. We are raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour because we believe a minimum wage should be a living wage. Thanks to our leadership, thousands of hard-working, minimum wage workers across the province started getting paid more fairly on January 1.

Mark ran provincially in Kitchener-Centre, 2011; Essex, 2014; and federally in Chatham-Kent-Leamington 2015.

The increase was necessary but clearly happened too fast for businesses to adjust. It benefited the economy by providing more buying power to people who are more likely to shop locally and work at large businesses. Many people working for years at the same stagnant pay rate only received an increase in their wages because of the min wage increase. However, it had a negative effect on small business. Mrs. Ruth Ann Tattersall

At the Chatham-Kent Hospice on Sunday May 27th, 2018, Mrs. Ruth Ann Tattersall of Chatham, at the age of 70 years, passed away with her family by her side. Cherished daughter of Mary Claeys of Chatham and the late Paul. Much loved wife of Jim for over 49 years. Loving mother of Andy and his partner Sarah Evans of Blenheim and predeceased by her son Jared (2000). She will be lovingly missed by her grandson Dylan. Dear sister of Ray and his wife Pam Claeys, John and his wife Lorrie Claeys of Chatham, Judy Stoner and her husband Allan of Chatham, and Nancy Jefferies and her husband Leroy of Newbury. Fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Ruth retired from Union Gas in 2009 after many years of service and was active in its retiree group serving on the executive in many capacities. A private ceremony with the immediate family was conducted at the hospice. Cremation has taken place with a celebration and interment to take place at Maple Leaf Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington West, Chatham, 519-352-2710. Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.
