For 40 years, the Chatham-Kent Block Parent program has been offering a safe haven for children in the neighbourhoods of our community.

To celebrate that accomplishment and to thank the volunteers who open their homes, the organization is hosting a 40th Anniversary Celebration at Kingston Park on June 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Pavilion One. Block Parent Program Manager Murry Haggerty said the celebration is a free family event that will include face painting, Kona Ice and cake, as well as a Chatham Kent Police Service bike rodeo from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and the Play Rangers from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Chatham-Kent fire personnel will also be at the event. Awards and the annual general meeting will start at 3:30 p.m.

“It’s an afternoon to celebrate our Block Parents,

some who have been with us since the start, for 40 years,” Haggerty said.

“It’s a chance to acknowledge all the work they do and how important they are to the program. We’re going to hand out some certificates and awards there as well.”

Haggerty said staff from the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit will be on hand to give tips on sun safety and they will have some giveaways as well.

“It’s just going to be really nice free event, and all the communities of Chatham-Kent are invited because we have Block Parents in each of the communities. It’s a great way for them to see what we do as a program and find out some more information if they are looking for it,” Haggerty noted.

Becoming a Block Parent involves getting a police check and being willing to put the sign in your window.

is safe for a child to use if they need it.

Forms are filled out to find out some information, including who is in the home, and anyone in the home over the age of 12 must have a police check done. Police checks can be done online.

Haggerty said once the police check comes back, references are called and she goes out to meet the parents and make sure the home is viable as a Block Parent home.

“We explain to them what it means to be Block Parents. You’re not there to provide snacks or toilet use, you’re just there to provide a child a safe place to go to in times of distress,” she explained.

“We talk to them about what they would do is someone uses the Block Parent service; you would

The power of youth Teen to lead 2018 United Way campaign The Chatham Voice

École secondaire catholique de Pain Court student Caterina Dawson will head up the United Way of Chatham-Kent’s (UWoCK) campaign this year.

UWoCK CEO Karen Kirkwood-Whyte made the announcement at the high school on Friday.

Dawson will succeed the 2017 campaign chair, Elizabeth Downey-Sunnen.

Dawson is a Grade 12 student on the brink of graduation.

She has spent her life growing up in Chatham-Kent with her two brothers and six sisters.

During her youth, Dawson made use of some of United Way’s funded services, primarily services with Family Service Kent and the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre.

Because of her positive experiences with these United Way-funded programs, she has devoted

herself to giving back to her community.

When it came time for her to select a Grade 12 coop assignment, she quickly applied for a placement with United Way. “When I was told my coop placement at United Way was approved, my thought was ‘yes!’ If anybody can help people, it’s these guys,� she said in a media release. “I had only been there a few days and I could already feel myself falling in love with it. The passion and hard work that goes into their work everyday is astounding. I had no idea that last year they supported over 30 programs and more than 45,000 lives have been changed because of a program that gets its money from United Way.�

Myers will not seek re-election

Chatham Coun. Bob Myers’ heart just wasn’t in it.

He won’t be seeking re-election this fall, as he’s recovering from serious heart surgery.

Myers, who turns 66 next month, said a routine checkup in February revealed a problem.

“I have for years had a heart murmur. Every year, I go for an echocardiogram. Every year, the results come back pretty much the same,” he said.

This time, however, they didn’t.

“This year, my doctor said, ‘We have a problem here.’ The results showed everything had moved into a severe state,” Myers said.

That severe state involved the aortic valve in his heart, which controls the flow of blood coming from the heart and going into the aorta.

“He (Myers’ doctor) likened it to putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose. It was damaging my aorta with the

pressure. And the blood was coming back in because the valve wasn’t closing,” he said.

Just one day after seeing his family doctor, Myers was in front of a specialist here in Chatham, and a couple of days after that, he was in London being seen by a heart specialist.

He said he got moved to the top of the surgery list and a few weeks later went under the knife.

“They replaced the aortic valve and repaired the aorta. One of my coronary arteries was diseased, so

they had to replace that too,” he said.

Seven hours of surgery later, Myers headed to recovery.

“I was out for seven hours. It was quite a lengthy procedure. It took me two solid days to come out of the anesthetic,” he said.

That was six weeks ago.

Myers is healing well, but he said he is limited in what he can do, as he tires very easily.

The Ridge Landfill has been serving the Municipality of Chatham-Kent community for 50 years and will reach its approved capacity by approximately 2021. An expanded Ridge Landfill would continue to provide long term residual waste disposal capacity to industrial, commercial and institutional customers in southern and central Ontario and to the Municipality of ChathamKent.

The Process On May 1, 2018, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change approved the Terms of Reference for the Ridge Landfill Expansion Environmental Assessment (EA) with amendments.

The approved amended Terms of Reference is available on the project website www.ridgelandfill.com.

This first Public Open House will introduce the EA process, provide background information on the site and project, and describe the alternatives being considered and how they will be evaluated. “There’s no way I could do that. Running without campaigning – it would bother me knowing I wasn’t putting in a solid effort,” Myers said.

He added it wasn’t an easy decision.

“I enjoy the council work.

I enjoy trying to help people out,” he said. “I can volunteer other places and

still get that satisfaction.”

Looking back on his time on council, Myers said he’s most proud of the fact council generally behaved with the best interests of all of Chatham-Kent at heart.

“There are still a lot of parochial issues, but when push comes to shove, most of these councillors see C-K as a whole,” he said.

“That’s what I’m most happy about.”

As for his future, Myers sees more volunteer work, as well as more time with his grandchildren.

Thankful couple gives back to CKCS

A local couple whose son benefitted from counselling and funding for extra-curricular activities from Chatham-Kent Children’s Services (CKCS) decided to give back to the organization.

Jenn and Chad Bedford of Chatham expressed their gratitude to the program by holding a vendor show in May, which was also Mental Health Awareness Month, at St. Andrew’s Church featuring 30 home business owners, raising $396 for CKCS youth mental health program and $396 for Hope House.

“I sell Thirty One bags and purses and I reached out to some friends who also do direct sales. The reply was overwhelmingly huge and within 24 hours I had all the spots filled,” Jenn explained. “This donation is just a small to-

The Bedfords explained counselling for their son over the past two years and activities to join with children his own age have a been big help to their family.

“It gives him a release he doesn’t really get and gives him a chance to interact with kids his own age,” Chad said. “When both parents are working, it’s hard to spend the time you want with your kids.”

Jenn said physical limitations after an accident have made it hard for her to do things like run around outside or get on the floor and play Legos, so having the support and funding from CKCS to give her child the chance to play with others has

Chad said this vendor sale went so well, they are already planning to make it an annual event.

Teri Thomas-Vanos, executive director at CKCS, thanked the Bedfords for their donation and noted the importance of mental health services.

“One-in-five people will be diagnosed with a mental illness, but five-in-five people are impacted by mental illness,” Thomas-Vanos noted, and said

CKCS will continue to work on making important services like mental health counselling and support for families available.

Thomas-Vanos took over as executive director of CKCS in May and said she is looking forward to working with staff and the community.

Sally Reaume, CKCS mental health program supervisor, said kids who are involved with counselling services at CKCS are

eligible for respite services so its helps put them at TJ Stables for a week of riding lessons for example, or at gymnastics once a week for 10 weeks.

“They can sign up for a program in the community that gives them a chance to do something recreationally and gives the parents some respite and a break,” Reaume said. “It’s an opportunity for kids to do what every other kid gets to do but maybe families don’t

have the ability to do it.

Kids get to have fun and parents have an opportunity to watch them have fun.”

Reaume said there is a mental health walk-in clinic the first and third Wednesday of the month at CKCS from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Any community member is welcome to bring their children aged 0-18 years of age, and if more counselling is needed the child can receive a referral.

Sane approach to pot It appears reefer madness does not inflict the halls of the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre.

And that’s a good thing.

In the 1936 film “Reefer Madness,” marijuana is shown as an evil, vile drug, where innocent teens are quickly drawn into crime, all from visiting a pot house.

But in reality, the madness is the extreme negative reaction to marijuana use.

Back in 1923, the federal government opted to make marijuana illegal.

And now, 95 years later, it’s about to become legal, within reason.

And that reason, at least in Chatham-Kent, is to essentially treat it the same way as we’d treat alcohol.

In other words, it’s a recreational drug that is not legally available to people under the age of 19, it will be sold from a controlled location, you can’t consume it in public, and you can be nailed for impaired driving if you enjoy too much of it and are stupid enough to get behind the wheel of your car.

Yes, there will be a storefront operation in Chatham. The Ontario Cannabis Store will sell pot to anyone over the age of 19, just like alcohol.

The control on marijuana is tight. C-K police say you can walk around with 30 grams of dope on you. Any more than that and you could face a fine, or criminal charges.

Numerous C-K police officers have already been trained to recognize the signs of drug impairment.

The growth of marijuana for personal consumption is an area that will likely lead to problems. If old Mr. Hooper has a personal pot plant growing in his backyard, what’s to stop teenagers Tommy and Biff from hopping his fence one night and helping themselves to a little of Hooper’s buds?

Kudos to municipal staff for not getting reefer madness. They acted correctly in prioritizing the protection of our youth, the community in general, road safety, and attacking the illegal pot market.

The latter, however, may be difficult to curb, at least in terms of grow ops, as much of the illegal pot grown here heads south of the border.

Ford’s election raises concerns Sir: Doug Ford has spoken at length about being a friend to the middle class; he has stated that he will reduce taxes, and even reduce the cost of beer to “a buck a beer.”

Recently during a radio interview, he said he would pay off Ontario’s deficit in three years.

This was in addition to the $6 billion he would save by finding “efficiencies” in public programs.

University of Western Ontario economist Mike Moffatt has calculated that total amount removed from Ontario’s

coffers to be $22 billion.

This “plan” would be disastrous to Ontario’s public programs, such as health care.

These fiscal cuts and tax breaks add up to more than Mike Harris did in his tenure as Premier of Ontario; he took $13 billion from public programs.

One visit to a physiotherapist would wipe out any tax break that a person would receive.

Hospitals would close, nurses and support staff

would be laid off, wait-times would lengthen, medical mistakes would increase and across the spectrum Ontario’s health-care system would worsen.

I know that Ontarians value our public health care, and other public programs, such as education and infrastructure.

Our health-care system needs proper funding; hospitals need to be funded by a 5.3 per cent increase per year; Ontario needs 35,000 more LTC beds, and these should

not be all “for-profit” institutions: our home care in Ontario needs to be overhauled, and taken away from “for-profit” businesses which are not delivering even adequate services to the people that depend on these services to remain at home.

Government exists to serve the people. Let’s make sure that the new government will serve all Ontarians fairly.

Sir: I’m concerned about a potentially wasteful reoccurring political agenda regarding unnecessary government spending towards the proposed widening of Highway 40.

Taxpayers may remember the extensive upgrades they financed towards the various creek bridges intersecting Hwy. 40 just five years ago. I presume that the mass and width of four

brand new lanes would eliminate and replace this recent investment.

Also, unlike the 401 corridor, there’s very little space.

Many homes were built on the edge of what was designed as, and still is, a straight and efficient country roadway. An expansion would put traffic on their doorsteps and sacrifice productive farmland.

Any apparent traffic problems occur during specific times only, due to an impatient commuter mentality. This manifests in drivers who can’t go fast enough. Chatham to Wallaceburg used to take half a day. It now takes between 20-25 minutes, or 15-20 with the preferred former speed limit of 90 km/h, which could be reviewed.

Hwy. 40 is one of several shared roads between two neighbouring towns, not the 401 Autobahn from Windsor to Quebec.

Express-minded drivers may need assistance adjusting their approach.

The dope on dope C-K staff discuss legalization of marijuana

To update Chatham-Kent municipal council on how upcoming legislation regarding the legalization of marijuana will affect the various departments, staff held a special meeting June 11 in council chambers.

Organized by community development, the forum featured reports from public health, human resources, planning services, municipal health and Chatham-Kent police.

Each speaker outlined how his or her department was preparing for the federal legislation (Bill C-45), which was supposed to be enacted in July. Two provincial pieces of legislation have been passed in response to Bill-C-45 which, according to the report to council, are meant to have three main priorities – protecting youth, community and road safety and eliminating the illegal cannabis market.

The legislation states that recreational cannabis can’t be sold to anyone under the age of 19, and they can’t possess, cultivate, consume or share any amount of it.

The act also prohibits the use of recreational cannabis in all public places, workplaces and motor vehicles, which affects many of the bylaws in effect in the municipality.

April Rietdyk, a registered nurse and general manager of Community Human Services, said there are still many issues related to the legislation up in the air until it is enacted the attached regulations are put into place.

With the third reading of the federal bill passed, Rietdyk said there were many amendments made that must be dealt with before the bill can enacted, including a difference of opinion amongst the provinces about allowing people to grow a limited amount of marijuana at home, and concerns with allowing

Dheepti Thommandram and Adi Zingman are all smiles after receiving their $1,000 scholarships from the local Kiwanis Club recently.

Two students from Chatham-Kent Secondary School were the recipients of this year’s Kiwanis Scholarship awards at a dinner meeting recently in Chatham.

Dheepti Thommandram and Adi Zingman, both Grade 12 students, were awarded $1,000 scholarships based on applications made to the program.

According to scholarship committee member Dennis Myers, both girls had outstanding applications based on academics, community and school involvement, as well as leadership qualities.

He earned the award at Friday’s 31st annual Senior Expo & Achievement Awards in Blenheim.

Lawrence, a long-time Rotarian who played a key role in fundraising for Chatham-Kent’s YMCA and hospice and whose work on the importance of using water wisely has been lauded in both Canada and the United States, was among more than 50 seniors who received awards.

Coun. Karen Herman, who has

chaired the Senior Expo Committee for 14 years, said the contributions made by seniors have value far beyond any dollar amount.

“The nominees and the thousands of other seniors who contribute each year make Chatham-Kent a better community, she said in a media release. “To these people, volunteering and community service are second nature and I don’t know where we’d be without them.”

Last year’s winner JoAn Dale, was honoured as Ontario Senior of the Year 2018 for Chatham-Kent.

Super levels of support for our office move I learned something last week when we moved our new location to 71 Sass Rd.: The kindness and support of Chatham-Kent people and businesses massively trump Murphy’s Law. If you don’t know, Murphy’s Law is if something can go wrong, it will. That happened to us in numerous ways last week, but the support system we experienced was incredible.

For starters, our Internet was to be switched over to the new office on Thursday. A contracted tech came out to the location, took a look at what was needed, and calmly said he couldn’t do it.

That was one day before our scheduled move.

What’s worse, he said it would be a week or two before the people who could do the work required – running cable to our unit, along the roof and from the pole at the roadway – would be available.

I received this news as I was on Talbot Trail delivering newspapers and seeing clients. I rushed back to the office and placed a call into Cogeco, our provider, and called the regional business accounts guy.

I tried not to shoot the messengers, but expressed my anger at the situation. We had Mike, a Cogeco tech, stop by the new building in early May. He said the install wouldn’t be a problem, and put in the work order.

In late May, with the lease finalized, I called Cogeco to book the install, explaining the cable would be coming from the pole at the roadside.

And then the contracted guy shows up and says he can’t do it.

Grrr.

We are a communications business. By not having Internet, our phones, email, access to our website, you name it, would be down.

In short, we wouldn’t be able to communicate, and that would include sending files to our printing company.

The folks at Canquest, the people whose service we utilize for our phones, offered an immediate temporary fix. They said they could loan us an LTE hub, where our phones and Internet would be connected via LTE. Since it would run on a cellular network, such usage would quickly add up.

I let the Cogeco folks know I’d be charging every penny to them.

In the meantime, those Cogeco messengers were hard at work getting our needs expedited.

Bruce Corcoran By late afternoon Thursday, I was told somebody would be there between noon and 4 p.m. the next day to connect us.

Phew!

Early the next morning, as I pulled into the office, Jim from Wire-Tel, the gentleman who was handling the move of all our phone and Ethernet connections, was waiting to get to work. It turns out he knows Mike from Cogeco. A quick call confirmed Mike was doing the cable install at the new place. We didn’t have a four-hour window in the afternoon. He told us he’d be there between 10 and 10:15 a.m.

He and another tech had us connected by 11:30 a.m.

The local Cogeco folks are top notch, and Mike is a consummate professional.

Meanwhile, with that big problem taken care of, I figured we were home free.

Not so lucky.

Our firewall system wouldn’t turn on. No firewall, no Internet, no telephone.

Not good.

I took it over to MicroAge where we got it. Turns out it’s two years into its three-year warranty. No charge for a replacement.

The only problem is one had to be ordered. Dan, one of the MicroAge wizards, got to work getting us a temporary replacement, and did what he could at his desk to get the unit programmed.

Jim installed it, but we kept having issues, so Dan, late on a Friday afternoon, on a day where they were short-staffed to begin with, came out to the office to work with Jim to sort through the issues.

Knock on wood, but everything stabilized. We had phones and Internet!

A huge thanks to Jim from WireTel for his patience on Friday, to Dan (who is also a dance dad) from MicroAge for helping to get us up and running, and to Todd and the crew at Canquest for having our backs if the cable install fell through.

The local support began before moving day. I cannot thank Ed Coke from Maple City Business Solutions enough for loaning us a cube van.

I crossed paths with Ed on election night. He asked when we were moving and if there was anything he could do to help.

Our printer/copier is leased from his business, so he offered to have his guys move it for us.

Then he did one better, offering the cube van, complete with a lift gate, for the day.

Wow. I was going to rent a cube van, but this was perfect!

Combined with a flatbed trailer courtesy of Unicorn Jay – the partner of our very own Michelle – and the help of a couple of young lads, we had the old office pretty much packed up in in two hours.

Everything was unloaded at the new place in another 90 minutes. I had the cube van back to Maple City by 1:30 p.m.

Maple City Business and MicroAge share building space, so it was especially convenient to one-stop drop – the van and the firewall – on a hectic day.

Through all this, our staff were amazing. Many hands make light work. Everyone showed up Friday ready to move equipment and desks.

And then there was Judy.

She helps with delivery of our papers to North Kent, Wallaceburg and Dresden every week, and is a friend.

She showed up Thursday to help, packing up our kitchen and cleaning up the area, and returned Friday to help move,

and to set up our new kitchen area.

She quietly got water for our water cooler and acquired additional items for the new office kitchen area as well – things we would need in short order but wouldn’t have thought about until they were needed immediately.

Such foresight and effort was truly appreciated, more so considering the impact Murphy’s Law was trying to have on our

move.

Lastly, I must thank Joe Comiskey, who was our landlord for our first five years of operations. What a great guy.

If a problem developed, it was handled quickly.

Joe would also periodically stop in to check on the building, inside and out, and would invariably strike up a conversation with whomever was in the office.

The only reason we moved

the office was to bring the warehousing side of our operation – the insertion and bundling of our papers – under the same roof as our front office.

So, we’re in our new location.

By late Friday, it looked as much like an office as our old location did.

We still have a few boxes to unpack and tables to build for the new warehouse, but hopefully, the big hiccups are all out of the way.

The importance of locally grown food to Chatham-Kent’s economic base and overall health of its residents was celebrated at the Civic Centre recently.

Ron Faubert and MaryAnne Udvari of the Kent Federation of Agriculture spoke of the importance of agri-business as a $3 billion economic driver for the community.

They noted, in a larger sense, that Canada produces some 200 different agricultural products.

The Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent is hosting its 5th annual Garden and Pond Tour on Friday and Saturday The tour is offered Friday late afternoon and

evening, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The club is proud to include several artists and musicians, tucked in at various gardens along the way.

“Seeing beautiful gar-

dens is just part of the package – there is an array of excellent talent involved as well,” Corrinne Kennedy, chair of the event, said in a media release.

Tickets are on sale for $20 at the following locations: Glasshouse Nursery, DeGoey’s Flowers, Syd Kemsley Florist, Rubies, and in Blenheim at Flowerbed Greenhouses.

Ticket price includes refreshments at the Zonta café, which is held at Holy Trinity Anglican church on Selkirk Street.

“It is definitely a highlight and always loved by everyone,” added Kennedy.

This year the theme is “Let Them Eat Cake” and along with Zonta members’ home baking, several area professional bakers have contributed cake or cupcakes.

It is possible just to attend the café, which runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, for a donation to Zonta’s projects, which assist women in
