That’s the number of Internet service providers who are installing kilometres of fibre optic cable in Chatham-Kent.

Homegrown TekSavvy has shovels in the ground, joining Bell Canada running fibre in the municipality.

TekSavvy, like Bell, is working with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to develop a high-speed fibre broadband network here. TekSavvy plans to connect more than 38,000 residences and businesses in the region, starting in Chatham with plans to expand to Blenheim, Ridgetown, Tilbury, and Wallaceburg.

For the past two decades, TekSavvy, Canada’s largest independent Internet service provider, has provided Canadians with telecom services. The

Marc Gaudrault, CEO of TekSavvy, said planning for this began more than 18 months ago, and work is underway.

“We already have built out some fibre. We had our first fibre-to-the-home customer lit up back in December. The first business was lit up a couple of months ago,” he said.

“We’ll have a number of additional homes coming online in the next couple of months, and the bulk of the work will be completed in the next 12 to 18 months.”

TekSavvy intends to invest up to $26 million over 18 months in the development of its fibre network.

The municipality intends to invest $6.5 million to facilitate an open-access fibre backbone connecting communities in Chatham-Kent.

Chatham-Kent CAO Don Shropshire said he is heartened that this local company is working with the municipality in its goal to bring advanced communications services to the community.

As to why lay fibre optic cable in Chatham-Kent, Gaudrault said the idea makes sense.

“We’ve been here for 20 years.

It’s our head office. We’ve had hundreds of employees here for a long time. It just makes sense for us to lay fibre in Chatham,” he said.

While Bell announced in May it will lay more than 270 kilometres of fibre cable, Gaudrault said TekSavvy will lay its own rather than seek to piggyback

off the Bell cable.

“We’re laying our own fibre.

We’ve had this in the works for more than a year and a half,” he said. “We have roughly 100 businesses that we have connected fibre to and I think 100 homes. We have another 1,100 in the works over the next few months.”

Gaudrault added the improved Internet connections are good news for all facets of life, for homes and businesses.

“Bringing ultra high-speed Internet to Chatham-Kent will help transform C-K as a whole.

As a father, for my daughters, they’re growing up here. We need this. This is where the world is going,” he said. “As a business owner, we serve the majority of customers from Chatham, so it’s needed.”

Gaudrault believes the fibre system, which will offer speeds of up to 1 Gbps, will also draw families and businesses to the municipality.

The directors of WAMBO released the names of the two winners of the Youth Ambassador Program.

Miria Pelletier and Brock Yazbeck, two Wallaceburg District Secondary School Grade 12 graduates, earned the ambassador positions.

Candidates were required to submit an essay describing the virtues of volunteering in the community and detailing the benefits it provides, both to the citizens of Wallaceburg and the applicant themselves.

The applications and essays were reviewed by an independent selection committee, unrelated to WAMBO’s Directors and Committee members.

The successful candidates each receive $1,500 towards their post-secondary educational costs.

Their awards will be presented on Aug. 11 on the main stage during WAMBO.

Shore has 10 birds in total that he is licensed to own to control nuisance birds at airports, landfills and on farms.

The 22 campers enjoyed meeting the birds and learning about them, and Neuts said he likes to have a mid-week treat for the kids, like the birds of prey demonstration, and then an afternoon at

the Kingston Park splash pad.

He was especially thankful to Evangel Church for letting them use the church facilities and to Quo Vadis for providing pizza for the kids. While he hoped for a higher attendance of campers, Neuts said he was happy with how the week went, and how much the kids enjoyed their week.

Chatham stepping up for teen

It’s difficult to know where to turn when tragedy changes your life in an instant.

For 12-year-old Ebony Vandenbogaerde of Chatham, learning to live paralyzed from the waist down is her new normal, and finding the supports and equipment she needs to have any quality of life is her mom, Maria’s new mission.

Surviving 10 hours of surgery in London in May to remove a rare type of tumour in – not on – her spine, Ebony contracted an infection which has kept her in the hospital in London, where Maria is with her every day to help her eat, get dressed and put in her catheter.

Thanks to Ronald McDonald House in London, Maria’s expenses to stay with Ebony were only $10 per night, but when she moves soon to the Holland Bloorview Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto, the cost per day to stay with her daughter will be $65 with no food or parking covered. And she may need to be there for six months to a year.

“They figured out I have come up with $6,000 just to stay there and that doesn’t include going back and forth,” Maria noted.

Add in the need for new accessible housing, vehicle and a wheelchair, and you can understand why Maria is feeling overwhelmed. A mother of eight, including Ebony and a 10-year-old son who is still at home, Maria is just trying to get through each day and help Ebony with her feelings of anger and sadness at the loss of her mobility.

Adding fibre is healthy Suddenly, the urban regions of Chatham-Kent feel the future of Internet connectivity here is very bright – and fast.

Two months after Bell Canada announced it is laying fibre optic cables throughout the municipality, local Internet service provider TekSavvy said it is doing the same.

Both seek to serve about 38,000 residences and businesses in the municipality.

TekSavvy, the homegrown ISP that was born and raised here in Chatham by the Gaudrault family, will do so with investment support from the municipality.

Do we need two such networks? It certainly can’t hurt.

Today’s reality is we all seem to need to be plugged into the Internet. From kids for educational and entertainment purposes, to parents for entertainment and even financial reasons, to businesses, we are all plugged in.

Here at The Chatham Voice, we move a lot of large files daily – from spec ads to photographs to our paper itself when we send it to our printer – to have slow Internet at the office. Plus, our telephone system is on VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol – and you need fast, reliable Internet for that as well.

We don’t have fibre right now, but it will certainly be an option for us in the future.

We aren’t the only business needing a fast connection. Companies do business around the province, across the country and around the globe from right here in Chatham-Kent.

Having multiple fibre optics options gives these companies more choice for how to connect to the world.

Families will have improved options for how their children can access online information when they do their homework, and they will have improved streaming and downloading options for the family for movies, video games, you name it.

Bell and TekSavvy have long been in disagreement over Internet pricing, and other issues.

TekSavvy utilizes infrastructure from companies such as Bell to deliver its product, so it is very understandable that CEO Mark Gaudrault would want to establish his own fibre network inside the municipality that he, his business, and his family call home.

One can only wonder if Bell caught wind of TekSavvy’s plans, which have been in the works for 18 months, and jumped the gun with their own plans.

After all, TekSavvy is the country’s largest independent Internet service provider, and is a rapidly growing speck in Bell’s rearview mirror.

Fresh faces needed on council Sir: The municipal election is coming up, are you going to vote Randy Hope back in for more free vacation trips back to China or elsewhere at the taxpayers’ expense?

Where are the factories and other jobs? When are we going to get these factories?

The casino is only to buy your vote because he knows he’s on the way out for doing nothing all these years. Time for a change for a new mayor.

The only vote Hope will get from me is to vote him out the door permanently.

As the municipal elections gets closer, I feel that the councillors that have been on there a long

time should step aside and allow someone else to have the seat.

Most are very well off or are their own boss and truly do not need the money.

To me it’s just plain moonlighting. They are bleeding city taxpayers to death for a number of terms and still today no factories and or big businesses have opened up anywhere in C-K. They truly let the job as councillor get to their head and all they want is their paycheque, which they truly don’t need.

Get these old timers out and put some new younger people in these council seats and then we

will get somewhere.

The last three terms if not longer have the same old councillors and still today no new businesses and or no new factories have come to Chatham-Kent.

Wallaceburg was a very busy community and now all these factories are gone and no new ones to replace them. Which proves we are getting nowhere with these people.

The new younger ones will see and prepare a better future for C-K where the oldies don’t care because they are almost ready to retire. Until retirement day arrives, they’re just milking it for all they can get in their

pockets.

People of C-K, vote these people who have been on council for a long time out and put in some new people. If they do get back in then C-K will suffer for sure until the next election in 2022. No new jobs and people living in C-K will cover the loss of money by paying more taxes.

Once the taxes go up, they never come down.

So be prepared to suffer the consequences of no jobs and more taxes for four more years if you don’t vote, “in the new and out with the old,” city councilors.

In the July 19 paper, we showcased the image to the right, a photo from the 1950s, and asked readers if they knew where it was located in Chatham. We figured it out, courtesy of Google Satellite images. The giveaway is the covered railway bridge at one end and the smokestacks at the other. You can still see the outline of the foundations of most of the buildings, despite the fact the property is largely overgrown with small trees and scrubs. The property once housed a rendering plant and an agricultural chemical production facility. An interesting video of the site can be found on YouTube if you search “abandoned fertilizer factory Chatham.”

one isn’t sure if a call or e-mail that appears to be from the municipality is a scam or not, to call before responding and never give out personal information.

“From time to time, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent may invite citizens to participate in surveys of varying topics.

Participation in these surveys is always voluntary.

There is never a cost to participate in a municipal survey, therefore no banking or payment information is ever required.

A concerned Chatham senior received a phone message recently asking her to take part in a “city hall” survey that she feared was a scam.

She called the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to see if the survey was legitimate and if council was involved with the survey. In this case, the survey was legitimate through TellCityHall, part of Advanis Inc., a market research company from out west wanting public opinion on the cannabis legisla- LOCAL ARTISTS tion.

“The clients at CFCD and the ones we serve are the same. We’re here to serve businesses and entrepreneurs – new and existing – in Chatham-Kent,” he said. “We help create business plans. It makes sense, but all of a sudden, they need funding. CFDC is a funding agency. They can work with the company going forward.”

But after a recent meeting with several CFDC board members, he said everyone realized the benefits of coexisting under one roof.

“It’s just natural synergies with what they and we do,” he said.

Being able to work with the CFDC board will also be a bonus, McFadden said.

“CFDC has a board of about 10 people from across Chatham-Kent with various levels of expertise in multiple sectors. What a great resource to tap into that

knowledge. It’s almost a built-in advisory committee,” he said.

If for some reason the relationship doesn’t work out, McFadden said it would be easy to pull out after two years.

“The lease is for two years. We’re dating. If it’s working then maybe we have the opportunity to extend. If we find out it’s not working, we have the ability to leave,” he said.

“But we’re going in with the best of intentions.”

The lease will be for $18,000 a year, plus taxes and covers utilities, parking, and snow removal.

Estimated IT costs is $7,000, while the purchase of eight workstations is estimated at $16,000.

MaryAnn Hawthorne tossed her hat into the ring for Ward 3, East Kent.

Incumbent Joe Faas filed his papers to seek re-election in Ward4, North Kent, as did Jessica Brooks.

Scott McKinlay seeks another term as a trusted for the public school board, representing Wards 1-3. Randy Campbell wishes to represent the same region.

Patricia Pook and Carol Bryden (incumbent) are running for the Catholic board, representing Ward 3 and St. Clair and Dawn Townships.

Janet Barnes announced she’s running for trustee for Wards 4 and 5.

They join mayoral hopefuls

Darrin Canniff, Robert Power, Alysson Storey and Harold Atkinson, who will go up against incumbent Randy Hope.

Council hopefuls in Ward 1, West Kent, are incumbents Bryon Fluker and Mark Authier, as well as Mark Pastorius and Melissa Harrigan.

For Ward 2, South Kent, Art Stirling, Henry Svec, Mary Clare Latimer and incumbents Frank Vercouteren and Trevor Thompson have announced they are running.

In Ward 3, East Kent, incumbents David VanDamme and Steve Pinsonneault have signed up to do it again.

As for Ward 4, North Kent, Dylan McLay, Steven Scott, Patricia Sylvain and Joey Cyples announced their intentions to run.

Up in Ward 5, Wallaceburg, Aaron Hall, Randy McNeil, Chris Glassford, Nicolas Cadotte and incumbent Carmen McGregor have filed their papers.

And in Ward 6, Chatham, incumbents Doug Sulman, Brock McGregor and Michael Bondy, Marjorie Crew, Larry Vellinga, James Thompson, Ryan Jackson; Chris June, Kirk Hooker, Drew Simpson, Les Banks and Karen Kirkwood-Whyte are running.

Housing market remains warm The Chatham Voice

Home sales in Chatham-Kent in June may not have been quite as hot as the weather, but they still sizzled.

According to the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors, 130 units sold in June, down 5.8 per cent from the same period last year, but still ranking among the better months of June on record.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales totalled 629 units over the first six months of the year. This is down nine per cent from the same period in 2017.

As for the others, they’ll continue to train with AF, and will take to the ice against one another in the near future as part of the Athletes’ Fuel Cup. Three

teams of 15 players – all of which will include a mix of pro, junior and minor hockey players – will play against one another starting at the end of the month at Thames Campus Arena.

Roeszler said the quest for the cup is an excellent chance for the minor hockey players to learn

from the pros on the ice.

He also hopes they learn each day in the gym and follow the effort the pro players put in day in and day out.

“They get to see what these pros have to do every day. It’s a learning experience for them,” he said.

As for running the training for the players, Roeszler said it’s a treat.

“This is my favourite part of the year. They’re guys who are extremely athletic. Training isn’t always fun, but they make it fun,” he said. “They are funny guys who are just fun to be around. It doesn’t feel like work working with those guys.”

Roeszler has run AF since 2012.

“We started small and it’s slowly gained weight over the past five or six years,” he said, adding the target has been to work with talented teenaged players, right up to the professional level.

“That’s always why I wanted to do it. I wanted to work with guys at those levels,” he explained.

Raaymakers, who last season minded the net for the OHL’s London Knights, was one of Roeszler’s first clients, arriving as a Major Bantam.

“You get a guy like T.J. Brodie or Seth Griffith and they’re already pros, but you get a real appreciation with a kid who starts with Major Bantam and he stays with you through junior and hopefully the pros,” he said of Raaymakers.

“That’s the reward.”

Hockey stop at safety village The Chatham Voice

Three high-profile hockey players stopped by the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village recently to speak with summer camp members.

Calgary Flames defenseman TJ Brodie, London Knights goaltender Joseph Raaymakers and Nuremburg Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers forward Dane Fox visited the village July 12 to speak to boys aged six to 12.

The players focused on philanthropy, anti-bullying, leadership, self-respect/ respect for others and they taught the fundamentals of hockey to the boys during sports day.

The kids are taking part in the Sigma P.A.L.S. Boys Camp.

The stars answered some questions, talked about their careers then went outside

to get down to hockey. After about an hour, the boys shook their hands, thanked them for coming and asked for autographs.

“Not much can beat the smiles these boys had today,” board member Gary Patterson said in a release.

Sigma represents Sigma Chi, the fraternity out of University of Windsor who drive to Chatham each year to volunteer their time to mentor the boys at Sigma P.A.L.S. The pillars of the Sigma Chi represent friendship, justice and learning which align with the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village values and morals.

Safety essential when taking kids to visit a farm Kids often find farms fascinating places to visit. Playing with animals and running around in the outdoors are just what many kids adore.

As fun as farms can be for kids, parents know they can be equally as dangerous, especially for kids visiting farms on vacation or school trips. Fortunately, there are many ways parents can protect their farm-friendly kids without taking the fun out of their next visit.

Protection from chemicals Kids must be protected from chemical exposure on the farm. Exposure can happen in a number of ways, be it inhaling or breathing chemicals into the lungs or contact between chemicals and the skin or eyes.

Kids can even ingest chemicals by eating or swallowing something on the farm.

Protecting kids from chemicals, such as pesticides, on the farm requires that parents educate children about caution or warning labels. Teach kids to stay away from items with caution labels. A “Caution” label is typically used to indicate hazardous items that can cause minor or moderate injury.

“Warning” labels are often used to indicate items that cause more serious injuries and possibly death.

Another way parents can protect kids from chemical exposure is to be a good role model.

When using chemicals, also be especially careful, wearing protective clothing and discarding containers and other materials properly. Make sure all containers are tightly closed and stored in locked cabinets that are out of reach of curious kids.

Protection from animals Animals present a major hazard to kids when kids visit the farm. Many kids love animals, and that love often takes precedence over safety. When kids are visiting a farm with livestock or other animals, parents should emphasize the following points so kids can enjoy the animals without risking injury.

• Remain calm and move slowly and quietly when around animals.

• Avoid an animal’s hind legs and approach larger animals at the shoulder.

• Steer clear of animals with newborns, no matter how cute and cuddly such animals might appear.

• Wear proper attire, including steel toed shoes. Kids should always wear helmets when riding animals.

Additional safety measures parents can take include keeping kids away from stallions, bulls, boars, and rams, and emphasizing the importance of having an accessible escape route whenever working with animals.

Protection from grains A host of hazards exist on a typical farm, and grain equipment is no exception. Though flowing grain might not excite kids who have never been around it, kids are often fascinated when they witness grain production on a farm for the first time. It’s very easy for kids to get trapped in grain or swept away by flowing grain, the force of which is difficult to understand by those who have never seen grain production close up.

When visiting a farm, parents should ensure that all access doors to grain storage structures are locked before letting kids out of their sight. In addition, ask if it’s possible to shut off power to grain-producing equipment.

Keep kids away from grain wagons and do not permit them to enter grain storage areas.

When taking kids to farms with heavy grain production, employ the buddy system and ensure each child has an adult with them at all times.

Farms are fun places for kids, but parents must be diligent and emphasize safety when visiting a farm with their children.

I’m told I’m stubborn If you were to ask my wife, I’m about as stubborn now as I’ve ever been in my life.

Case in point is a nasty scrape on my lower right leg, obtained the night we spent camped out on Rose Beach Line a stone’s throw from Lake Erie.

I got up to stretch from the gravity chair in which I was sleeping that night – I like sleeping under the stars out there (despite the horde of mosquitoes that buzzed about that night) – about 4:30 a.m.

As I rose, one foot sank down into the sand quickly, and I automatically adjusted my weight to my other leg – the not-so-good one – and it too was on uneven ground.

Down I went, landing on sticks, sand and gravel, scraping up my leg.

I brushed off the sand and tried to catch some more sleep in the truck, but the stinging in the leg, and the fact I couldn’t open a window due to the bugs, resulted in my early exit that morning from a beautiful spot.

When I got home, I gave my leg a cursory cleanout and settled in for some additional sleep.

The only problem is I never gave the leg a good cleansing.

By Monday evening, it became swollen and red. Friends from Lindsay, Pete and Arlene, were visiting for a couple of days, so I had two “wives” giving me “the look” over my failings taking care of myself. Off they went to the pharmacy, returning with antiseptic wash and a triple antibiotic ointment. Following an antiseptic cleansing of my wounds, I had to apply the ointment three times a day for five days.

Unfortunately, that meant I couldn’t wear pants last week.

So there I was going to assignments and visiting clients with my scraped-up, red shin on display for everyone.

Sorry, folks.

But following a weekend of rest and relaxation – I spent much of it with my leg elevated, I was happy

The visit

As I mentioned, Pete and Arlene, close friends from Lindsay visited recently. They were actually our neighbours for 13 years there.

It would be nice to have them live close by again at some point, as they have their home for sale and are looking to relocate, possibly to Chatham-Kent.

We did our best to make them feel welcome, and they did their best to behave like themselves.

They purchased beverages, more than resupplying anything they consumed, and bought pizza and wings one night.

But I did manage to get a good meal cooked on the barbecue.

We did the prosciutto-wrapped asparagus again, some barbecued chicken and grilled red peppers, with rice.

We just have to make them realize that moving here means regular meals off the Big Green Egg, lots of laughs on our back patio, quick access to everything from two Great Lakes, culture and sports here and just an hour or so away in London, Windsor and Detroit, and warmer winters.

I must thank Voice reader Jenny for dropping off a couple of massive zucchinis last week.

It may be a hot, rather dry summer, but her TLC in her garden has worked wonders, judging by the zucchinis she dropped off.

C-K responds to refugee crisis The Chatham Voice

Chatham Kent is stepping forward to determine how it can best help deal with the number of refugee and asylum claimants inundating some of Ontario’s largest urban centres.

Following a conference call recently by the Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO), Toronto Mayor John Tory issued a statement asking mayors to adopt a regional strategy and find ways to help

relocate some of the more than 3,300 persons now in that city’s shelter program.

“As Canada’s first welcoming community for Syrian refugees, we have shown the capability and the willingness to provide humanitarian aid and a chance to help newcomers begin a new life,” said Mayor Randy Hope in a media release.

Mayor Hope said communities across Ontario are consid-

ering how they can help in regard to the current need.

Chatham-Kent CAO Don Shropshire said the municipality is in contact with officials in Toronto to assess which individuals may be interested in coming to this area.

“It’s not simply a question of saying we will take X number of people,” he said. “Ideally, we want to bring people here who can obtain employment,

smooth the transition for newcomers.

“We can stand proudly and say that our community has always welcomed newcomers whether it be at the turn of the 20th century, after World War II or more recently,” he said.

“With the exception of the Indigenous peoples, we are all newcomers.”

Union Gas donates $10K to United Way

C-K helps 11 student entrepreneurs

“Helping the students by providing education and real-life experience are the most important elements of the Summer Company program,” said Spencer Pray, Business Consultant, in a media release. “We want to help them apply the theory that they learn into the practical application of running their business. Success is when they walk away at the end of the program more capable and ready for the business world.”

In place of a summer job, students have the opportunity to be their own boss. All that’s required is a good Summer Company idea, commitment, and hard work.

One such student is Jordan Smith who is operating her business, Spotless, a boat-cleaning service located in Mitchell’s Bay. Smith has successfully launched her business and is building a steady base of clients.

The Chatham-Kent Small Business Centre said 11 student entrepreneurs across the municipality are part of this year’s Summer Company program, a program that helps young entrepreneurs learn what it takes to run a business.

This year’s group features a collection of eager and talented youth from across Chatham-Kent who have worked hard to build their business plans and launch independent businesses.

The Summer Company program, which is in its 17th years and is offered in partnership with Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, allows students aged 15 through 29 to receive mentorship and hands-on training to run their own business. In addition, students in the program can receive startup funding up to $3,000 to operate a small business.
