Local choir moved by trip to France

It was the trip of a lifetime for members of the St. Andrew’s Church Choir, who returned recently from a singing tour in France.

St. Andrew’s Director of Music Devon Hansen arranged the tour and opened the choir to members of the community who wanted to be a part of the experience, singing and exploring part of France.

Hansen said 60 people took part – 30 choir members from age 19 to 84 – and 30 family and friends.

The choir began rehearsing for the trip in January, and included both seasoned travelers and people who had never left the country.

“It’s a common thing, especially in the (United) States, to take choirs and tour them. There are tour companies that do this,” Hansen said. “I gave them an idea of what I had in mind and they sculpted the trip around it. I said I wanted to go to France, we wanted to do some of the war sites and we

wanted to sing in some churches.”

Hansen said the company in Toronto crafted a 10-day trip that included both Juno Beach and Vimy Ridge, which made for a very moving and memorable experience.

“We got to sing at Juno Beach, which was really awesome,” Hansen said of the experience, which was emotional for the choir members. “The choir could barely keep it together. We sang outside and my back was to the beach but the members were facing it and you could just see the emotion.”

For the two church concerts in Reims and Chartres, they were a full half hour of acapella music, as no instruments were allowed. Hansen said singing in the cathedrals that were 600 to 800 years old was an incredible experience.

“The acoustics were unreal. When you stop singing and you still hear the sound for 10 seconds, that changes the way you hear things,” Hansen said.

Trip could become biannual

“There were a lot of tourists in the building and the churches did advertise the concert, so we were well received.”

At the Juno Beach Centre, run by Canadians on the beach, it was an all-Canadian program of remembrance which was a great deal of fun for the Canadian choir. At Vimy Ridge, the experience moved them so much, they spontaneously burst into a rendition of O Canada.

One part of the trip that was unexpected but very fun was being in Caen during the soccer World Cup, which France won, beating Croatia in the final.

“When we came back from Juno that day, all the

streets were closed and the moment that they won, things just erupted, so that was an unexpected part of our trip,” Hansen said.

The trip was so successful that Hansen said he is considering organizing a trip every other year, and would like to do another one in 2020.

“It was a fun trip and really great to do music over there. They really love Canadians so make sure you have your Canadian flag on you,” Hansen noted.

“The people who went were really appreciative because I think it’s a trip they would have never went on by themselves.

of experiences are very powerful.”

For himself, Hansen has worked hard to bring community to his church and outreach music programs to not just church members, but youth and anyone who enjoys music in the community.

“I think I’m returning to the old school way of doing things. Back when

a lot of the old cathedrals were built, they acted as schools back then and so they were really important beacons to the community to foster music,” Hansen said. “The more opportunities we have and the resources to plan a trip like this, everyone gets to enjoy that kind of thing.

It’s allowing the community to do something they

might not have been able to do.”

Bringing in symphonies and the Choral Scholar program are two examples of how Hansen is bringing music to the community through the church, and he said it is all part of his own personal growth as well.

“The more we can do that kind of stuff, the more our

role is than just Sunday morning worship,” he added. “Music is a universal language.”

Hansen is busy now setting up the new Chatham Music Centre at 155 Thames St. that was in St. Andrew’s Church but the program outgrew the facility. There will be an open house at the new location this month.

After a lengthy dry spell in Chatham-Kent, we’ve seen some downright wet weather, but also have experienced days where it seems Mother Nature isn’t sure what she wants to do. Here, the skies threaten towards Ridgetown, as viewed from a sunny backyard southeast of Thamesville recently.

Members of the North Buxton Community Church aren’t sitting back and letting a Toronto-based church take away their place of worship, their ancestors’ final resting place and 150 years of their history in the Buxton Settlement.

A $2 million lawsuit was filed July 31 against the British Methodist Episcopal Church (BMEC)

by Steve Pickard, a lawyer who took on the case pro bono after he heard the BMEC told the local church community they had to rejoin the main church or vacate the property. An option to lease the property was removed before the church community finalized a response. “The congregation of North Buxton filed a claim against the British Methodist Episcopal Church to save the church built by freed slaves in 1866,� Pickard said in a release.

The claim documents state that the BMEC either names the North Buxton Community Church as “true owners of the property,� remove themselves

as trustees over the property, or that they pay the North Buxton Community Church $1.5 million for the amount they put into the property since they broke with the BMEC in 2003, plus $500,000 in damages.

The Bethel Congregation started the church in the Buxton Settlement (formerly Elgin Settlement) in 1866 and was made up of people escaping slavery in the United States via the Underground Railroad. “Many of the residents of Buxton, like many of the members of the Bethel Congregation, are direct descendants of those escaped slaves,� the claim states. “Their ancestors built the church on the Church Lands in 1866.

Many of their ancestors from that time and throughout the next 150 years have been buried in the adjoining cemetery which is on Church Lands.�

Of main concern to the current church members is the cemetery that they have maintained and cared for since 2003. The cemetery is still active, with more than 100 graves purchased and reserved.

Another issue during the campaign was a request from area residents to construct concrete barriers on Highway 401 between Chatham and Tilbury to prevent head-on collisions. McNaughton said he and fellow ministers are currently looking at all the requests.

“It’s certainly a focus.

The Minister of Transportation and myself are reviewing all the requests for infrastructure and transportation projects. I know that section of the 401 is a top priority for our government, and the minister will have more to say about that in the time ahead.”

An important issue for residents on wells in the Dover and Chatham townships area is the repeated call for a health hazard investigation into the safety of the water contaminated with black shale that is known to carry toxins such as lead, mercury, uranium and arsenic.

During the campaign, Ford signed a letter to the Water Wells First group, promising to call for a health hazard investigation into the safety of drinking the contaminated well water, which well owners said started after construction began on the two wind farm projects in the area. McNaughton said his government intends to keep its promise.

“Our first step was to cancel the Otter Creek project and that was a promise made, promise kept, and to the people of Chatham-Kent, we are going to keep our promises and in the future, we will be dealing with that issue and the water safety,” McNaughton said. “I certainly have been very vocal about that for a number of years, and there are 20 families that can’t drink

water from their well and they are a priority for us.”

McNaughton also was asked by Ford to sit on the Treasury Board so he is part of the Commission of Inquiry into former government spending in a line-by-line audit headed by former B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell.

“The purpose is make public exactly what the state of the finances are in Ontario because there was a discrepancy between the former Wynne government and what the auditor general said – there was a big difference,” McNaughton said.

“At the end of August, the Commission of Inquiry is going to report back to the people of Ontario to say exactly where the finances are of the province. I think that’s important to restore trust in the government again and restore accountability for the people.”

After that, he said, will be the task of finding efficiencies and cutting waste and returning to a balanced budget because “we committed that by the next election; Ontario’s books would be balanced.” For some opposition, however, the word “efficiencies” had been translated into cuts.

“Ontario spends about $150 billion a year. I view this task of balancing Ontario’s budget very similar to how people manage their household income or how small businesses manage their finances.

Government has to live within their means; they can’t spend more money than they take in,” McNaughton noted.

He said the last auditor general report reviewed 14 government programs and $1 billion was found that could have been saved with zero job losses in the public sector.

According to MoneySense’s 2018 list of Canada’s Best Places to Live, Chatham-Kent ranks 165th. That’s up significantly from 324th in 2017.

Canadian cities were ranked based on wealth and the economy, affordability, population growth, taxes, commute, crime, weather, access to health care, amenities and culture.

2016, reports the total population decline is down to -2 per cent and shows improvements in all of the target population groups.

“The census data, and national recognition on lists like MoneySense’s show that we are continuing in a positive direction and Chatham-Kent is an increasingly attractive place to live,” Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope said in a media release. “These improvements highlight

Musical rewards Music truly is the universal language. It uplifts us, moves us to tears, pumps us up and relaxes us – sometimes at the same time.

For the St. Andrew’s Choir that recently returned from a singing tour in France, members experienced that concept first hand, singing in 600-year-old cathedrals and at Juno Beach, a war site that has a great deal of significance for Canadians.

Music Director Devon Hansen made that experience happen, and he is one of the reasons Chatham-Kent has such an incredible variety of music opportunities – both to learn and to listen.

Hansen, a talented and acclaimed performer in his own right, has brought his love and passion for music and sharing music to St. Andrew’s Church.

The community has benefitted.

From the Saturdays at 7 concert series each year and organ concerts, to the Chatham Music Academy and the Choral Scholars program, he has given music lovers many opportunities they might never have had. With cuts to the music curriculum in schools, people such as Hansen, and the many music teachers out there, inspire passion in their students and give them an outlet not found elsewhere.

In Chatham-Kent, we have many venues that offer up a huge variety of music, like the free Wednesday concerts by the Chatham Concert Band in Tecumseh Park, the different bands that come for our festivals and special events, recitals organized by music teachers, and Saturdays at 7.

We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to music and we are lucky enough to have the people willing to work tirelessly to bring it to us.

Our community recently moved many rungs up the ladder on the list of Canada’s best places to live – from 324th last year to 165 this year. Part of that success can be given to our rich arts and music culture here in Chatham-Kent, along with the great sports teams, our proximity to the Great Lakes with all the activities they provide and the people here, who for the most part, have hearts as big as Texas.

Chatham-Kent is a great place to live, and people such as Hansen are a big part of why.

Most care about community Sir: Quite a few letter writers seem to believe municipal politicians are in it for the money or the glory. That could be so in individual cases but, unless I happen to be particularly naive, I still believe many municipal politicians are there because they really believe

they can do a lot of good for their municipality.

I have made a study of local government over the years from its beginnings in England in the Middle Ages.

I believe most of the 20th century was spent search-

ing for an idealised system of local government. In Canada, we have seen it all from the reeve and his township to the mayor and his council. And I still think the majority of councillors believe they are able to improve the situation in

their community.

I think Premier Ford could have been a bit more tactful with his dramatic decision about Toronto council, but we’ll have to see how things work out.

Dealing with Ontario’s debt Sir: Well, our Ontario election is over and we have a new governing party and a new premier.

That was a certainty as was the debt left by our previous political party, and it is over $300 billion and we knew that to.

It will take a little time while they figure out exactly how much the debt really is, and of course, who do you really believe?

But it is our debt because we let them do it and because we are all greedy and want all we can get. Well, we got it.

That huge debt requires interest of about $1 billion per month. That means little when you say it fast, but what is a

billion? It happens to be a thousand million. That’s what we are wasting each month just in interest. Each month, one thousand of your millionaire friends would have to give up a million dollars just to pay the interest. And then next month, another thousand millionaires would have to chip in a million dollars each. And the next month, and the next.

Do you now have a better idea of how huge this debt is? That would certainly build our concrete barrier on Highway 401. And after leaving us in this predicament, dear Kathleen Wynne just

walks out and collects her pension.

And she smiles at us.

Ontario now has about 50 per cent of Canada’s total debt.

Can Doug Ford and the PCs do any worse? So here we are in deep debt, worse than California was in a few years ago, and we are now the most indebted area on the planet. But we got what we wanted.

Now do we want to make the situation better? If we do, we have to trust Mr. Ford and his team; trust that he won’t become a dictator and will listen to his advisors and genuinely try to live within our budget for the

first two years and then try to reduce the debt after that.

It took years to get into that debt and it will take years to get out. Regardless of how you voted, this is OUR problem and it must be addressed for our sake plus the future of our children, grandchildren and all of Ontario.

We all must become less greedy, less self-centred and try to co-operate in order to reduce our debt.

If we don’t, we will end up like the country of Greece just a few years ago – broke, bankrupt and humiliated.

This summer at the Chatham Railroad Museum, those enthusiasts welcome locals to help them celebrate William Glassco Railroad Fun Day on Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to Madeline Sykes, museum co-ordinator, the Fun Day is a way to involve the community in honouring the man who started it all.

The family-friendly event includes games, snacks, face-painting, tours, door prizes and more.

“It’s an event we hold every summer as a way to celebrate the community that supports us. It’s named after one of the most active members of that community, one of our founding members, William Glassco,” Sykes explained.

The museum first opened in 1989 in a Canadian National Railway baggage car built in 1955 that ran on the CN rail line between Windsor and London until 1982 when it was retired.

used to work for the railroad or who had relatives that did, or just people who took an interest in the railroad because they were such an integral part of the communities including ours,” Sykes noted.

The model railroad club will be bringing a larger train set than the one in the museum for people to see on William Glassco Day, the coordinator said.

The Railroad Museum is open free to the public 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays until Aug. 25. Drop-in or reserved tours are available and outreach tours are also available.

Sykes said the museum is a non-profit organization that relies on public donations to operate, so any donation is gladly accepted.

“It’s free to the public.

We accept donations, but we know budgets are a little tight and we want

to make it, even if it is not physically accessible, we want the museum to be as barrier-free to everyone as possible,” she added.

Sykes, a political science grad originally from the

Blenheim area, said she has learned a lot about rail history, especially from people who used to work in the industry who come in and share their stories with her.

Paying it forward (or backwards?)

I must give a shout out to Bob Kennedy of Water Elite. Here I was on a recent Sunday morning picking up some breakfast items for the family at a local Timmy’s drive-thru. I’m in my usual daydreaming daze, pull up to the window to pay and the person at the till says, “The water guy paid for your order.”

I look forward and see a familiar pickup truck pulling away. I couldn’t see it, but I could all but feel Bob’s huge smile.

On Friday morning at a Tim Horton’s drive-thru, I swear the guy in front of me was smoking a joint.

From my vantage point, this is what I saw: • it appeared he was toking, not smoking; and • when he was done he flicked what appeared to be a roach, not a butt, to the ground.

Sure, this guy, who happened to be wearing a suit, could have been fast-smoking a hand-rolled cigarette (who rolls their own smokes anymore?) to get a nicotine high, but what I saw certainly suggests otherwise.

In a couple of months, smoking pot will be legal in Canada. But it currently isn’t. And if you think it will be OK to toke and drive, it really isn’t. Cops are trained to spot impaired drivers, be it by alcohol or drugs.

Drivers who are impaired by drugs are subject to the same penalties as those impaired by alcohol.

Selfish drivers

Speaking of drive-thrus, it appears some folks need a refresher on etiquette. It’s almost as if they think they’re attending a yard sale!

ignore the rules of the road, laws and bylaws, parking wherever they like – including on the opposite side of the street and where parking is prohibited. If it’s convenient to them, they park, and to hell with what it might do to other traffic, or what hazards it might cause.

In the case of drive-thrus, some folks forget, or don’t care, that there are other people around. The worst offenders are the ones who block lanes on roads.

I’m talking about people who go to a drive-thru and the line up is out to the road, so they just put on their turn signal and wait in the road for the lineup to eventually snake forward enough for them to get in there.

And they aren’t alone, as others do this behind them.

What about the folks who just want to use the road as, well, a road? You are interrupting the flow of traffic!

Plus, if you are in dire need of coffee in the morning, there’s another coffee shop at most a couple of blocks away. We’ve got them all over the place.

But if you HAVE to have your coffee from that particular place, why not pull in, park, walk inside, get your order and go back to your vehicle and drive away? Chances are you’ll be out and gone faster than waiting in a particularly long vehicular lineup.

To steal from Jimmy Buffett, golfers will be wasting away in FoGaritaville Sept. 7.

On top of that, there’s a line up to get into FoGaritaville, the third annual Festival of Golf put on by the Foundation of the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent (CTCCK).

A full slate of 144 golfers are signed up to take part in the event, each contributing $750 for a day of golf, food, beverages and entertainment at Willow Ridge Golf and Country Club in Blenheim.

Time for a review of drive-thru etiquette Continued from page 12

The Road-Blocker isn’t the only drive-thru etiquette culprit. There is also his or her cousin, Me First. This person either approaches the drive-thru from the opposite direction where there’s a big parking lot – think of the Tim Horton’s on the corner of Third and Wellington in Chatham – and tries

to slip into the lineup ahead of people who have been waiting longer coming from the other direction.

But they can also be the person heading in the proper direction, but cutting into the line and blocking traffic flow inside the parking lot. This can happen when someone is trying to cut in from the other

direction, and this person opts to ensure his or her place in line is preserved.

But it’s selfish, as you block off the parking lot.

The minor infraction folks in terms of drive-thru etiquette are the Space Wasters. These are the people who leave way too much space between the front of their vehicle and the

one in front of them.

This can cause all of the other aforementioned issues to occur, as they combine to create unnecessarily long lines of vehicles.

For the record, I don’t drink coffee, but I know how important it is to people. Don’t get between some folks and their first coffee of the day.

Summer Water Safety

Active Supervision • The absence of adult supervision is a factor in most child drownings.

• Whether it’s a pool, the bathtub, a water park, or the beach, always watch children actively around water - even if they can swim.

•Consider requiring all non-swimmers to wear a life jacket to keep them at the surface to assist you while supervising.

Backyard Pools • Backyard pools are especially dangerous for small children. Ensure adequate barriers are in place such as four-sided fencing along with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

• Empty portable toddler pools after each use.

Diving • Diving headfirst into water should be avoided unless the individual is properly trained and is sure that the water is deep enough.

• Avoid diving in home pools and always enter the water feet-first Open Water • Never underestimate the power of current. Swimmers or waders can be swept away in an instant, particularly if non-swimmers or weak swimmers get caught by current in rivers or out of their depth in abrupt drop-offs.

• Be cautious about swimming in currents, and know what to do if caught in a current.

The vintage vessels and vehicles will return to Wallaceburg this coming weekend to take part in the 30th WAMBO event. It all starts Friday.

WAMBO organizers can’t wait for No. 30

WAMBO may be turning 30 this year, but one thing never changes – praying for sunshine.

The organizers say everything’s ready for the 30th edition of the Wallaceburg Antique Motor and Boat Outing Aug. 10-12, and all that’s left is support from Mother Nature.

Bill Wolsing, WAMBO’s chair said it’s always the case for outdoor events.

“There are only about 10

good weekends a year for outdoor events,” he said.

“We’re praying for sunshine.”

As for preparation, Wolsing added the horde of volunteers have done a great job.

“We’re all locked and loaded,” he said.

The chair stressed it is the volunteers who make events such as WAMBO possible. There are about 75 who invest their time in helping to make the three-day extravaganza possible.

“All these people give a lot of their personal time towards this event. It’s what makes it so successful,” Wolsing said. “It’s incredible. It really is.”

The antique boats will likely begin to arrive Thursday night, but really start cruising up the Sydenham River in numbers on Friday. Many will take part in the boat parade that evening.

Wolsing said participants really like to decorate their boats for the parade. This year, the plan is

to have the parade in the evening hours, so external lights could come into play.

He said the weather can have an impact on vintage boat traffic as well.

“Some of these people are so meticulous. Some don’t even bring them out if it’s raining,” he said.

“Some of the older wooden boats are just beautiful.”

One thing that won’t deter boaters is the water level. Wolsing said in the past, when the

water levels were much lower, some vessels just wouldn’t come up the Sydenham. But that’s no longer an issue.

While the boats are being showcased on the Sydenham River, the vintage automobiles will be headed out to Dresden and back Friday for their annual Terry Glover Memorial Cruise.

Wolsing said the cruise takes place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A special keepsake this year will be a hardcover

book celebrating WAMBO’s 30 years, Wolsing said.

“It documents every year. Every poster we’ve had since Year One is in the book, with all the people involved each year in there too,” he said.

To help alleviate downtown congestion, WAMBO organizers will have people movers to pick people up from the WalMart parking lot on McNaughton Avenue and transport them downtown and back.
