Learning to fly

Wanting to pursue piloting as a hobby, 13-year-old Aiden Hawgood of Chatham will participate in the COPA for Kids event Sept. 8 at the Chatham Municipal Airport. Hawgood, pictured, was taken up recently by local pilot and event co-organizer Dave Barnier in a Piper Lance to help publicize the event, open to kids aged eight to 17.

For most people, the chance to fly in a small, private plane and experience flight up close and personal is something that never happens.

The COPA (Canadian Owners and Pilots Association) Flight 203 Chatham-Kent group is going to make that opportunity happen for kids aged eight to 17 on Sept. 8 – for free. All 150 registration

spaces for the event were filled within hours of announcing it, so for some kids, they will have to wait until next year.

“We’ve really exceeded our expectations. Our national group said to expect 50 maybe 100 kids, but our 150 spots were full in a few hours,” said COPA member pilot and event co-organizer Dave Barnier.

One participant will be Aiden Hawgood, 13.

Event fills fast as kids want to get airborne

The Chatham native said he hopes to be a pilot at some point in the future.

According to Barnier, his group just wants to expose kids to the world of aviation and share with them the joy of flying. A pilot since 1998, Barnier has been flying for 20 years.

“I was exposed to flight when I was young and it piqued my interest, and we just want kids who might not have that same chance to have the opportunity to fly,” Barnier said. “I waited until I was 35 to get my licence and I want to share what we’re fortunate enough to do.”

Also helping organize the event is private pilot Aaron McPhail, who said he had a similar experience and just wants to share his love of flying with kids.

“I had the same thing as Dave happen to me when I was about Aiden’s age and I was hooked,” McPhail said. “A family friend took me out for a flight and I was fortunate to have that opportunity.”

Area media, as well as Hawgood, had the chance to see Chatham from seats in Barnier’s Piper Lance, a 6-seat single engine plane, in a short flight recently to help publicize the event. The plane, with a top speed of 220 knots, cruises at

about 168 knots during a flight, according to Barnier, who ended the flight with a smooth-assilk landing.

McPhail said there is joke among pilots that you spend $1,000 learning to fly and $50,000 learning to land.

Barnier said flights like the one they took Hawgood up on will be available with volunteer pilots taking the kids up after some ground

school lessons. Kids will spend about two hours learning about planes and flying, followed by a short flight. Specific times for each group will be given during registration.

Even though registration is currently full, parents can go to www.copayck.com to check if there have been any cancellations. COPA for kids begins at 8 a.m. and runs to 2 p.m., with a rain date of Sept. 9 in case of bad weather.

The kids will be broken into two groups: ages eight-13 and 14-17.

Bikes return to Chatham’s core

The Toronto native and University of Guelph agricultural business student said he’s had his eyes opened, thanks in no small part to people such as Chatham-Kent’s Grant and Amanda Craven.

Amanda is an agri-science student at Guelph, while Grant, her father, works the family farm off Centre Side Road, and works for PRIDE Seeds as well.

Sher, with the help of lifelong friend Sagi Kahane-Rapport, is working to educate others about how farms do business today.

They put together the documentary Before the Plate, which tracks the food on a dinner plate at the posh Toronto restaurant Canoe back to its origins. They bring Canoe’s chef, John Horne, with them.

Sher commended the business practices of farmers they spoke with in the documentary, and hopes it clears up some

“It’s what I live for, about the work I do on the farm; our profession,” he said.

“We (farmers) are one per cent of the population.

This is a unique opportunity to tell the journey of a plate of food from the farms.”

The tomatoes used in the beef tenderloin dish for the documentary originated at Truly Green Farms on Bloomfield Road in Chatham. Truly Green’s work with Greenfield Global in the sharing of heat and carbon dioxide connected the documentary to the Craven family farm, which grows corn and sells it to Greenfield.

That connection has blossomed further as Sher, Kahane-Rapport and a film crew were in Chatham-Kent recently to film a commercial for PRIDE Seeds. Some of the work took place on the Craven farm.

No buck a beer here in C-K

Don’t expect to see either of Chatham-Kent’s craft breweries venture into the province’s buck-a-beer pricing.

The Doug Ford government is lowering the price floor on what a bottle of beer can be sold for in the province, to $1 from $1.25 on Aug. 27, but the majority of breweries of all sizes don’t appear to be interested.

Rick Nicholls, MPP for Chatham-Kent Leamington and a member of the Ford government, said a couple of craft breweries plan to sell their product for $1.

“It’s just to increase competition,” he said of the government decision to lower the price point. “It’s completely voluntary.”

Nicholls said the buck-a-beer initiative has no government money going into it.

“It’s purely up to the brewers.”

Nancy Cowan, one of the owners of Bayside Brewing Company, said she’s reviewed the government’s announcement, but said her

company won’t take part.

“If they’re holding future tax increases, that would be helpful to the industry.

We’ve been experiencing three cents per litre increases every

March and every November for the past several years,” she said. “That’s more than keeping pace with inflation.”

Dare to dream big in C-K We’re not sure if you’ve noticed this about Chatham-Kent, but the people who like to do things for the community are big dreamers and the motto always seems to be, “Go big or go home.”

With COPA, the Canadian Owners and Pilot Association Flight 203 in Chatham-Kent, they have dreamed big to make dreams come true for 150 local children.

Mere hours after they publicized their free flight event for kids coming Sept. 8, the 150 registration spots available were filled.

If you talk to Dave Barnier, COPA pilot and one of the event organizers, the pilots involved just wanted to give kids the opportunity to see what flying is all about and share their love of the open skies.

Barnier was told to expect 50 or maybe 100 kids the first go around if he was lucky, but his group made room for 150. They never expected to be have the list filled out that quickly.

These exceptional individuals who are volunteering their time, airplanes and gas to give kids the opportunity of a lifetime are what our community is all about. People with big hearts dream big, sell that dream to like-minded folks, and before you know it, something incredible happens.

COPA could have started out small with 50 kids, but it didn’t. And organizers hope to do it again next year.

For all those disappointed kids who didn’t get on the list this year, there is always next year.

COPA members also are quick to say great things about the Air Cadets program in our community, where youth can also learn about airplanes, flight and getting a pilot’s licence.

If you’re going to dream, go ahead and dream big, because chances are, you’ll have a number of people right behind you happy to help. That’s just how things work in Chatham-Kent.

It appears Jim and Doreen don’t want Randy Hope to be our next mayor. But if we

have a bunch of new councillors sitting around the table, perhaps we need an experienced man to guide them.

Some people make good mayors.

3rd St. Bridge stays closed for now

Chatham-Kent officials hope to have a temporary fix in place for the Third Street Bridge before the snow flies, and say plans remain in place to overhaul that bridge in 2020.

The 57-year-old bridge was closed Aug. 8 when an inspection raised safety concerns. Chris Thibert, Chatham-Kent’s director of engineering and transportation, said the report showed deterioration in portions of the bridge’s sub-structure.

“The majority of the damaging corrosion is from salt. It’s an open-grated structure and that does allow the runoff to directly impact the supporting beams,” he said. “There were sections where corrosion had caused weakening, and our first course of action was to determine to what level the structure was compromised.”

“We’re moving as quickly as possible to expedite the process,” he said.

Prior to the discovery of the structural issues, Thibert said the plan was to have a consultant do a detailed redesign of the bridge next year, and have the work done in 2020. The latter timeline shouldn’t change, as the temporary repair will be done to allow the bridge to reopen, albeit under a load limit.

Big sponsorship bucks for IPM

The cash and beer flowed freely Thursday evening at Sons of Kent, as the organizers of the International Plowing Match celebrated $320,000 in new donations.

Sixteen businesses, led by a donation of $100,000 by TekSavvy, contributed.

The IPM will take place Sept.

18-22 on 858 acres of land near Pain Court.

Organizers expect upwards of 20,000 people a day visiting the event, with half of those coming

from outside the municipality.

Planning is in excellent shape, IPM co-chair Leon Leclair said.

“We’ve done our homework.

We’re prepared,” he said.

Leclair said the efforts of an army of volunteers, as well as the landowners, sponsors, and the IPM executive are all key contributors.

“It’s a puzzle. Every little piece is important,” he said, adding the event is bringing everyone together. “Rural-urban divide doesn’t exist here.”

Darrin Canniff, also co-chair for the event, said a great deal is planned around the IPM, in-

cluding a large-scale electronic 50/50 draw that will take place at the end of the event.

“We’ve got seven world records targeted,” he said, including the largest egg race and corncob eating event.

In terms of new sponsors, Natasha Ell Saunders, vice-president of legal affairs for TekSavvy, said being part of the event makes sense. ““TekSavvy has been a proud supporter of the Chatham-Kent community for 20 years,” she said. “We’re the largest independent telecommunications

company in Canada, with 700 employees, 500 of which are here in Chatham-Kent.”

Online start for legalized dope

It may become legal to smoke pot this fall, but you’ll have to do some online shopping to get your legal dope – at least in the short term.

That’s the word from the provincial government.

The Ontario Cannabis Store will offer marijuana online only to start, once pot becomes legal Oct. 17.

The intent is to follow up with a proposed private retail model that would be launched April 1, 2019.

Chatham was to be home to one of 15 communities to initially host a retail outlet for the Ontario Cannabis Store. Rick Nicholls, MPP for Chatham-Kent Leamington, said that was a decision made by the previous government.

“I think it was done for political reasons initially to try to sway voters down

this way,” he said.

As for where the stores could go in the future, Nicholls said the government has yet to identify which communities would be at the front of the list.

He isn’t sure when, if ever, this municipality would play host to a cannabis store.

“We’ll be giving municipalities an opportunity to opt out of it. I think our government wants to give the municipalities the opportunity to say whether they want a cannabis store or stores,” he said.

Users can still order their pot online, something Nicholls said will be strictly regulated and monitored.

Chatham-Kent CAO Don Shropshire said the change is effective immediately.

Shropshire said the move would enhance the Municipality’s ef-

Open house, open support for Ebony We recently held an open house here at The Chatham Voice, and held a fundraiser for the family of young Ebony Vandenbogaerde at the same time.

The support from local sponsors was incredible!

In fact, it was only matched by the great support of the public who stopped by!

OK, that’s a lot of exclamation points for yours truly to employ (journalists typically don’t use them), but the support is so appreciated.

We held a barbecue, as well as a gift raffle, and raised more than $650 for the family.

Furthermore, the Mocha Cruisers Shriners showed up with giant cheque in hand. They are donating $1,000 to help offset the price of assistive devices the family will need.

For those of you who don’t know, Ebony, 12, is paralyzed from the waist down after surgery to remove a tumour from her spinal chord. She’s

The family is in need of support, and has an account set up at Heritage Savings on Merritt Avenue in Chatham to receive donations.

They also have a GoFundMe page setup in Ebony’s name.

Ebony’s sister Larissa attended our open house with her daughter Olivia.

Larissa FaceTimed Ebony so we could say hello as well.

Thanks to everyone who supported our fundraiser.

This community never ceases to amaze me in how people will jump up to help someone in need or support a particular cause. When we asked businesses for support, they jumped at the oppor-

tunity to donate items or a gift card.

And thanks to all who stopped by to say hi during the open house. I was reminded numerous times by visiting readers that I have not written about Finn, our furry companion, lately. He’s fine.

The guy has gotten pretty large, as in long. When he stretches out, he can take up the width of the hallway, or the bathroom floor. Talk about a furry trip hazard.

He’s nearly five kilograms, or 11 pounds. The vet says he shouldn’t gain any more weight, but he doesn’t seem chunky to us.

Speaking of the vet, when we first got Finn, he was indifferent to his car rides to and from the vet’s. Now he just plain hates the car.

As for visiting the vet, Finn’s quite compliant and content visiting and getting prodded.

ing given his penchant for spending evenings and the early morning hours outside. He regularly comes in with burrs on his fur, but we have no idea where he’s getting them

or how far he’s venturing.

A favourite weekend sleep spot for Finn is in my recliner. If I’m not in it, he’s in it. And when I’m in it, he’s often on the footrest, taking up as

much space as possible.

When he wants out, he’ll come down the stairs to the basement, meow at me in more of an urgent conversational tone than anything else.
