Two people had to be treated for smoke inhalation following a morning

fire on Hart Place in Chatham Oct. 9.

The fire broke out shortly before 9:30 a.m. in the one-storey building that

housed Dave Polowick Designs and QPS Mechanical.

Firefighters from stations 1 and 2 in Chatham

were called to battle the flames. More than 20 firefighters were on the scene.

Health-care advocates and local labour representatives question the Doug Ford government over proposed mergers of public health units and EMS services.

At a media conference on Oct. 10, Shirley Roebuck, co-chair of the Chatham-Kent Health Coalition, wondered where the provincial government got its advice.

“The government is receiving bad advice,” she said. “It doesn’t make sense when you think of community needs.”

She said public health units provide a plethora of services to the public, including immunization, combating infectious diseases, aiding in infant health, and more.

Roebuck believes centralization of such services – the province is considering going from 35 health units down to 10 – would remove local governance over such agencies, something she said is needed.

Roebuck said the proposed changes to ambulance services is even greater.

The province would go from 49 local EMS services to 10, and go from 22 dispatch centres down to 10 as well.

“Our EMS would probably be run out of London,” she said. “I’m afraid rural needs would be placed in a second tier to cities.”

She added London-area hospitals are so busy that ambulances can be lined up outside, waiting for beds to free up so they can deliver their patients.

With a centralized ambulance service, Roebuck fears if there is a need in or near London, they would

Natalie Mehra, executive director of the OHC, said the plan is to hold “stadium-filling events” in various parts of the province

to inform the public and to loudly protest the proposed changes.

The first such event is slated for Nov. 2, right here in Chatham at the

John D. Bradley Convention Centre.

“These are life-saving services that are vital to the community,” Mehra said. “The government

needs to hear from the people en masse.”

She asks people to attend Nov. 2, to “stand up and protect local health services.”

The meeting is set to start at 11 a.m.

More than 60 men turned out and slipped into red high heels to help end domestic violence and abuse during the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event on Oct 8 at Thames Campus.

Walk a Mile event raises more than $10,000

It was a sea of bright red high heels as men of all ages carefully balanced themselves in their shoes in the walk to help end domestic violence and abuse last Tuesday.

With the event in its 11th year, this is the first time Walk A Mile In Her Shoes took place at St. Clair College’s Thames Campus.

Karen Hunter, executive director of the Chatham-Kent Women’s Shelter, said moving to

the college campus was a good decision.

“We wanted to get a lot of people involved that maybe wouldn’t normally come out on the weekend,” Hunter explained.

“With the college students here, we had the power line class, paramedics, we had different students from different parts of the college and I think some faculty as well. From the community at large, TekSavvy was here with their guys, so there was a nice mixture of people.”

Supporting the local Cha-

tham-Kent Women’s Centre, the event raised more than $10,000 this year and saw an increase in participation as an estimated 60 males joined in the walk, including St. Clair College paramedic students Connor McAlorum and Dylan Trapp.

“It’s for a great cause and it’s always good to be involved,” said McAlorum.

“It’s a pretty big turnout and I didn’t think there would be that many,” added Trapp of the crowds.

Helping more than 1,000 men and women each year at the Centre, Hunter has seen an unusually steady increase over the last three years for the need for their services.

“We have been filled to capacity and had a waiting list unfortunately for emergency shelter services and just for programs for women and children,” said Hunter.

Looking towards the future, Hunter believes the education of students is a key factor to making a difference.

“If we can get into the school system to talk to young people about the warning signs of dating relationships, what are healthy relationships, what are positive couple relationships and the forms of violence and abuse so that people identify, ‘This doesn’t look or feel right to me, I shouldn’t be in this situation.’”

Mergers make no sense Whenever local autonomy is lost to government-imposed service centralization, it leaves communities with many questions and concerns.

Each community, including Chatham-Kent, is unique with its own set of local needs and issues to be addressed. So, it really is no surprise the Chatham-Kent Health Coalition is joining its Ontario counterparts to oppose the proposed mergers of ambulance services and public health units.

Going from 35 health units to 10 and centralizing services means C-K could be in danger of having a city-centric “one-size-fits-all” solution imposed on us – a widespread, rural municipality.

The same can be said of the centralization of ambulance service. Currently, there is an excellent working partnership between our first responders in Chatham-Kent, and we are able to adjust service according to our local need.

If every need put forward has to go to an office elsewhere, sent up the chain for consideration, then returned, it could be months before crucial decisions are made on public health. We shudder to think of delays as dispatchers from a hundred or more kilometres away try to figure out the location of the call for help.

With no plan for how this centralization is going to work for municipalities to consider, the Ford government is asking us to blindly trust that our needs and concerns will get swift and fair consideration, and will be the best plan for our community.

Cost savings, while an important consideration, shouldn’t be put before the health and welfare of Ontario’s citizens, especially when, often, centralization doesn’t bring anything but a top-heavy, bloated bureaucracy.

Assurances from government that this idea will work and save money aren’t really worth the paper they are written on.

They need to look long and hard at centralization before they take any action. It would be more prudent to have Ontario Health Teams in place to help advise policy makers on the needs of each community, and give municipalities a larger voice since they have to foot some of the bill.

Rural ambulance service and public health programs are a much different animal than city-based needs and wants, and that needs to be acknowledged.

Are there carbon tax options?

Sir: Another federal election campaign is underway and every voter in the nation has a decision to make.

What does each political party believe in?

What are their respective platforms and proposed policies?

What are the issues of the day and where does the truth end and the rhetoric take over?

I believe the environment is an immediate and serious issue. With all of the alleged fake news and claims of reporter

bias, I’m not sure how anyone can honestly believe that the global destruction of our environment is not a hard and cold fact. One that, if unchecked, might truly jeopardize the lives of future generations.

For proof positive, regardless of the editorial spin, just look at the aberrations of the weather and the impact its having on people and infrastructure: typhoons, hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, winds storms,

heat waves, melting ice caps, as well as the destruction of tundra and rain forests, etc. All of it front and centre on the nightly news and media outlets.

Locally, look at the wacky weather we’ve had over the last decade or two and the impact on soil, crops, water sources, modified winters, hotter summers, etc.

You can’t pick up the local newspaper without a report of how Chatham-Kent suffers an

unusually higher than average percentage of heart attacks, lung disease and cancers. Our roads and infrastructure are falling into the lake because of erosion and much of our well water is undrinkable.

Air pollution! Water pollution! The destructive weather patterns!

How can anyone possibly doubt that addressing the present environment is not a legitimate priority, whether it be nationally, locally or around the world?

Thanks to Fire Fest organizers Sir: Thanks go out to those who helped organize and participated in FireFest in Chatham and other areas of Chatham-Kent this past weekend.

One often feels concern when they see fire trucks and other first response vehicles going by, wondering what sort of trouble is brewing that these firefighters and other first

responders have to attend. It is good, though, to see this collective effort of persons that keep these vehicles running, both current and retired ones in operation, for this event.

These sorts of outdoor shows are often at the mercy of the weather conditions, but this year the conditions were fa-

vourable for people like me to come out and see this event.

The parade along streets in Chatham at the end of the event in particular was very entertaining as the long procession of these various types of vehicles, with lights flashing and horns and sirens blaring, stretched

along the streets for what seemed to be an endless stream of many bright red vehicles.

It was an event worth not just seeing, but experiencing.

Hopefully, this event will be able to be continued in Chatham-Kent for many years to come.

This brings us back full circle to the current federal election campaign.

The first television coverage I saw was Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer state in a news segment that his first priority if he became prime minister would be to cancel the carbon tax.

Had he said something to the extent he’d instead make it tougher for polluters.

Do something, absolutely anything except cancelling it just because it is a Liberal idea. That partisan attitude simply panders to the fossil fuel industry, foreign owned companies, Jason Kenny’s Conservative Alberta and their investors.

Considering the state of the globe right now, not to mention Chatham-Kent-Leamington, fining polluters and taxing carbon sounds reasonable to me, especially if it works to help clean the environment.

I am of the mind that taxes are inevitable and arguing that the fines for carbon pollution are too high, discourage investors or hurt the economy are not relevant at this time. If taxes increase, small price to pay to extend people’s lifespans.

If there is no comprehensive alternative that is better than what we have, and Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives have not offered one. Let’s stick with the carbon tax and hopefully it will work to benefit present and future generations.

Local author Fred Osmon has spent years researching and compiling stories of local sports heroes and everyday heroes.

Rankin was beaten to death with farm implements in 1893 while he and two other officers were attempting to arrest a man, George Freeman, wanted for “having carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old white girl,” the book states.

Freeman and his two brothers, Alex and William Henry, were ultimately sentenced to a combined 80 years in prison.

Pickard died after getting shot in the ankle in 1922 while confronting three men as they were in the process of robbing a store in Thamesville. The bullet shattered his ankle, and he never recovered.

Two of the men, Zimmer Noah and Edward Rickman, were convicted of manslaughter.

Reynolds died after a scuffle with James Whaley in 1947. A punch by Whaley as he was being taken into custody dropped Reynolds to the ground, and his head hit the sidewalk.

He never regained consciousness.

Whaley was sentenced to seven years for manslaughter.

McFadden, with the OPP, was writing out a ticket on the last day of 1999 on Highway 401 after pulling over a speeder.

Another vehicle slammed into the back of his cruiser, and he was killed.

Investigators believed the ramming was intentional, but Edward Buskar was found not criminally responsible and was committed to a psychiatric hospital.

Osmon’s book also details the death of Joe Grozelle, a graduate from Ridgetown District High School who went missing from Royal Military College in Kingston in 2003.

After 22 days of search-

ing, Grozelle’s body was discovered in the Cataraqui River not far from the college.

No one was ever charged.

In fact, the cause of death was undetermined. Some believe he committed suicide, but his parents, and Osmon, aren’t so sure.

“I have my thoughts on this, but I couldn’t put it in print,” he said.

Osmon added that researching Grozelle’s death had an effect on the writer.

“Out of that whole book, there was one story that brought me to tears – the story of the young man out of Ridgetown, Joe Grozelle. The ceremony at the cemetery just brought tears to my eyes,” he said.

Osmon said while many of the murders took place around the turn of the 19th Century to the 20th, it is still surprising how many C-K killers are free today.

“It’s unbelievable how many are out walking the street. They served their time and they are out,” he said.

But Osmon sees Chatham-Kent as a safe place to live these days.

“We’re a pretty good community. I would say it’s a great place to raise your family,” he said. “We don’t have too many serious problems very often.”

Osmon said he publishes his books because of his love of local history.

“My family is bugging me to write our family history. I guess I should get that done,” he laughed.

“I just enjoy writing local history so much I couldn’t give it up.”

The First Nation elders, including Bkejwanong knowledge keeper Cecil Issac Jr. who was at the event, are bringing the language, culture and traditions back to their young people.

Classens, whose parents both attended Residential Schools, told the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, who lived with her granny on a small reserve in British Columbia and was excited to go to St. Joseph Residential School and have friends to play with. Her granny saved up her money to buy Phyllis something special for school, which was a shiny orange shirt to wear on her first day of school.

The storyteller dramatizes the tale of what happened to Phyllis when she arrived at the school, where she was stripped of her orange shirt, her hair was cut, and she was not allowed to speak her language or practice her cultural traditions.

“She realized that it didn’t matter if she was tired, sick, hungry or sad, she had to rely on herself,” Classens said.

“It was like she didn’t matter. And that’s when I say, ‘Every child matters,’ and that’s the message I try to get across to the kids.”

Classens said Webstad spoke at a conference about how, at the age of six, Residential School affected her feelings of self-worth, and she worked hard to keep her life, family and traditions together, and the Orange Shirt movement was born in 2013.

“That’s what the Orange Shirt story does; it brings attention to the fact that there were great wrongs done to our people,” Classens noted,

Home sales surge in September The Chatham Voice

It was a hot September in terms of home sales in Chatham-Kent. In fact, it was the hottest on record for sales.

A total of 136 units changed hands in September, according to the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors.

That’s a jump of nearly 30 per cent compared to September 2018. It also marks the highest September sales figure ever recorded.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales totalled 1,035 units over the first nine months of the year, up nearly four per cent from

the same period in 2018.

“Home sales surged ahead in September to set a new record for the month, which is an impressive feat given how few properties are currently out there for sale,” said Steve Carroll, President of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors, in a media release. “The competition between buyers for that limited pool of listings continues to push average prices to new records.”

Carroll added prices continue to rise.

“With just three months left to go in 2019, the average sale price in the region remains on track for

an annual gain of about 20 per cent,” he said.

The average price of homes sold in September 2019 was a record $268,014, jumping 19.2 per cent from September 2018.

The year-to-date average price was $252,147, rising a similar 19.9 per cent from the first nine months of 2018.

There were 163 new residential listings in September 2019. This was an increase of nearly 15 per cent on a year-over-year basis.

Despite the increase in new supply, overall listings remain stuck at their lowest level on record for

John Balagtas has a passion for Canada and The People’s Party.

An immigrant from the age of 10, Balagtas has embraced our Canadian values wholeheartedly.

He graduated from Centennial College after studying Automation and Robotics. At the University of Toronto, Balagtas earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

For the past 12 years John has been a member of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves. In this role, he has travelled and worked throughout Canada and abroad.

Balagtas is fully behind the People’s Party platform, and is driven to bring it to fruition.

His primary focus is on freedom and prosperity for the Canadian people.

A resident of the Chatham-Kent Leamington riding, he enjoys meeting with the people of the riding and seeks to understand their concerns about the federal government.

Dave Epp is a third-generation farmer of processing vegetables and cash crops, born and raised in Leamington. He has been active in sports, agriculture and community organizations his entire life.

Epp is a former single-engine pilot who enjoys fastball, hockey, golf and a good choir. With his wife of 34 years, Charlene, he has four daughters. He considers himself a “common sense Conservative.”

Epp’s experience includes being the Ontario/Quebec Regional Representative for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, being a member of the Municipal Committee of Adjustment, sitting on the Ontario Agricultural Commodity Council and the Leamington Flyers Hockey Club Board of Directors as well as serving as Chairman of Agricorp, Ontario Process Vegetable Growers and the Ontario Tomato Research Institute.

1. Public trust – Unsure of the question but in general democracies are only as relevant as the people who make them. Democracy is not something we only do every four years by voting.

As a member of Team Trudeau, Katie Omstead understands what it takes to create good, well-paying jobs in the community, and wants to ensure that young people have the opportunity to remain in, and return to their communities to work, raise a family, and one day, retire.

She is committed to working with Justin Trudeau to further grow our middle class, ensure seniors are treated with dignity, veterans are respected, and community members have access to physical and mental health services.

Born and raised in Chatham-Kent, Omstead now resides in Leamington with her husband, Matthew, and their daughter. She has deep roots throughout the riding, as her family has been involved in fishing, farming and small business throughout the region for several generations.

Omstead earned degrees in Political Science and International Development, and completed her Bachelor of Education. As an educator and entrepreneur, Omstead leads student clubs, coaches sports teams and mentors children and youth.

Mark Vercouteren is a Green Party politician who has run provincially since 2011, and federally in 2015.

A first generation Canadian who grew up in Chatham-Kent, he spent his teenage years helping at his parents’ fruit stand business.

In 2012 he moved back to Chatham-Kent, and now lives in a country house in Chatham with his wife of 12 years, and cats.

He has B.A.s in Physics and Math from the University of Waterloo.

His previous jobs: farm worker, working at his family’s fruit stand in Blenheim, retail, IT/ Technical Support, teacher. Presently a customer service rep., he has 16 years’ experience at various call centres.

Vercouteren ran provincially in Kitchener-Centre, 2011; Essex, 2014; and federally in Chatham-Kent Leamington 2015.

He enjoys reading, history, podcasts, and Canadian and U.S. politics, as well as biking, gardening, baking bread from scratch and local foods.

1. Public trust – There are several reforms that could strengthen the checks against abuse of power and influence peddling.

Tony Walsh is an investment consultant with a longstanding career in banking and supporting small businesses, not-forprofits and agriculture organizations because he knows that helping locally based groups results in stronger communities where everyone can thrive.

He has been a keen volunteer his whole life, a passion he now cultivates by assisting numerous local organizations; the United Way, YMCA, Kinsmen, Junior Achievement, Canadian Cancer Society, Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, and food banks to name a few. He understands it makes a difference when governments have the courage to act according to their values.

Walsh lives in Chatham with his wife and three young sons.

He is fighting to make life more affordable for families and ensure they can continue to access the services we all need.

1. Public trust – Liberals have said a lot of nice things and made a lot of big promises, but you can’t trust them to work for you, they’re working for big corporations and lobbyists.

Liberals say they’re progressive, but they never end up keeping their promises.

You can count on New Democrats to actually fight for you instead of for big corporations.

Bria Atkins was born and raised in the Lambton-Kent-Middlesex riding.

She is a graduate of York University with a bachelor degree in Kinesiology & Psychology.

She spent 15 years working in public service as a Kinesiologist in the field of physical rehabilitation and geriatric physiotherapy.

In 2014, Atkins became an Ontario Certified Teacher and continues to work as an elementary educator in her local public school board. Additionally, she and her husband have developed several small businesses in their hometown of Dresden.

Atkins is running as a candidate because of her growing concern with Canadian governance. She joined the PPC movement in an effort to give a voice back to Canadians who feel left out of the conversation.

Atkins is not a traditional politician, but strives to stand as a new voice for freedom, fairness, responsibility, and respect.

Anthony Li is a medical student at Queen’s University who recently completed a degree in Biology and Economics at Western University. He has an interdisciplinary background, having worked in public service at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, in research with the London Health Sciences Centre, and in teaching at Western University.

Li recently served as the provincial Green candidate in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, becoming the riding’s youngest ever candidate. Notwithstanding his age, he ran an effective campaign, travelling to connect with constituents in over a dozen municipalities.

Li firmly believes youth have immense potential to impact their communities. He has strived to solidify his position as a youth leader by joining the board of directors of LEADS Employment Services, served on the board of directors of the Western USC as a director and chair of the finance committee.

Jesse McCormick was born and raised in the heart of Middlesex County. He is a long-time advocate for community-led decision making, environmental protection and Indigenous rights.

As a father, he knows that the decisions we make today will define the future for our children, and he is proud to have helped to shape key environmental protection policies as an advisor to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

During his career as a lawyer, political advisor and academic, McCormick has worked for the United Nations, the Federal Court of Canada and Indigenous Peoples across the country. He has served as legal counsel on many large infrastructure projects for Indigenous Peoples and he has built a reputation as a skilled negotiator capable of bringing people together to solve complex problems.

McCormick holds degrees from the University of Guelph, the University of Ottawa and the Harvard Law School.

Dylan McLay is a food equipment sales representative, an industry he knows very well from his many years as an award-winning chef. He won his most memorable prize, the Best Chef in Britain under twenty-one, when he was 16 and spent many years travelling the world preparing meals for celebrities, heads of government and royalty.

As an entrepreneur who ran several local restaurants and catering operations, McLay knows it takes courage for government to invest in the needs of families. He believes in the NDP’s platform for small business is the key to building the local economy. That’s why McLay is fighting for business-owners and to create new well-paying local jobs. He also wants to improve access to health care and universal pharmacare and affordable housing, so that everyone can thrive.

McLay lives in Tupperville with Ashley and their two children. He brings his dedication to community building to his volunteer work on the Boards of several local organizations.

Lianne Rood grew up on a 1,000-acre vegetable farm in Grand Bend and is an entrepreneur and farmer with a background in politics and small business.

After receiving an Honours Bachelor degree in Criminology and Sociology from the University of Windsor in 2003, she worked in Ottawa as a political staffer for the Stephen Harper government for six years.

During her tenure in Ottawa, Rood assisted Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz in developing and passing the Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act, Bill C-19.

She first worked for Bev Shipley and then also served as assistant to David Anderson in his capacity as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, and as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture.

Rood has been involved with several federal Conservative campaigns and EDA boards since 1997. She has also been a member of the executive committee and Senior Event Manager for the Canadian National Prayer Breakfast since 2006.

This combination of work and volunteer experience has provided her with a deep understanding of Chatham-Kent Leamington’s strengths and hopes.

Omstead has firsthand experience with the challenges that middle-class families face, and she understands the issues.

1. Public trust – The Liberal government has addressed this issue head on. Our government eliminated partisan appointments to the Senate, and established a new, merit-based Senate. This is returning the Senate to a true house of sober second thought focused on enhancing and reviewing legislation.

In addition, as the MP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington, I am committed to including regular office hours in every community in our riding, along with regular town halls and roundtables, to ensure that the decisions I make are directed by our community. It is time to make sure the voices of our community are heard in Ottawa.

I also pledge to work across party lines and with all levels of government to ensure our communities have a strong voice in Ottawa. For too long, our communities have been ignored due to personal and partisan interests.

This is unacceptable.

2. Carbon tax – The Carbon Incentive was brought in due to Doug Ford scrapping Cap and Trade, and refusing to put another plan in place. It discourages high emitters, while encouraging Canadians to change their behaviours. Every cent paid goes back to families, community

groups and schools.

Nearly all families will receive an annual rebate that exceeds their annual expenditure at the pumps, and most fuels used on farms are excluded. The taxpayer-funded stickers forced onto every pump by Doug Ford are missing these facts.

Andrew Scheer and Doug Ford don’t believe climate change is a serious issue. Here in Chatham-Kent-Leamington, we know that it is. We have experienced unprecedented devastation from coastline erosion and flooding, included road closures, damaged homes, and threatened farm and parkland. I am committed to fighting hard to ensure those affected by this flooding and erosion get long-term solutions.

3. Opioid addiction – We must commit to both prevention and treatment. We have to stop the supply entering our country at the border, and prevent the tools and chemicals that are used to manufacture these products from getting into the hands of criminals.

Addiction treatments must be more accessible. Mental health needs to be treated just like physical health.

A re-elected Liberal government is committed to: making mental health services more accessible everywhere in Canada; creating more mental health services for youth aged 10-25; creating more combined addiction and mental health services; and shortening wait times for public mental health care. In addition, we are committed to ensuring each person in our community has access to a family doctor.

Also, we need more transparency in government by decreasing the cost to Access To Information and opening it up to members of parliament, including the prime minister. It should not be allowed to have exemptions because public interest comes before the secrecy of the government in most situations.

We need to fix our electoral system so we stop electing majority governments with a minority of the votes. The First Past the Post system means that our government is not held accountable because they know that they only need to appeal to enough voters to gain power with a majority.

It is time to fix the system so that each vote actually counts

and be more equal.

2. Carbon tax – I lived in cities, and in the country so can understand why this is an issue because for small towns, driving is much easier, and can often be a necessity. However, more people are looking for alternatives to having a vehicle as it is proving to be too expensive to own. The carbon fee and divided method is proven to be very effective in dealing with the issue of reducing carbon use and is a benefit to most people.

I have been hearing that a major issue in my riding is lack of public transportation.

We need more options for people other than expecting them to have their own vehicle. Even before the Carbon Tax was put into place more

3. Opioid addiction – We need to address the opioid crisis as a health-care issue, not a criminal issue, by declaring a national health emergency. It is necessary to recognize that fentanyl contamination is why deaths are more accurately described as poisonings than overdoses.

Drug possession should be decriminalized, ensuring people have access to a screened supply and the medical support they need to combat their addictions. This has shown to be the best method to deal with drug addiction.

Drug laws are not effective to deal with addiction.

2. Carbon tax – We can make life more affordable and take action on climate change at the same time.

People want to do their part to fight climate change, but they’re also struggling with the rising cost of living.

Liberals and Conservatives are playing politics on the carbon tax, dividing Canadians.

The Liberals’ plan is all about the carbon tax, but it still won’t get Canada close to meeting our emissions reduction targets.

The carbon tax is just one tool in the fight against climate change. It’s not a matter of either/or when it comes to the environment and affordability; we can address both with bold solutions like: • Creating a comprehensive climate change plan that makes polluters pay and cuts emissions; • Investing in clean energy jobs and retrofitting homes to make them more energy-efficient, and reduce monthly bills;

• Expanding transit options and making it easier and cheaper to get a zero emissions car; and • Helping Canadians out with everyday expenses like lowering cellular phone bills and introducing affordable pharmacare will save families money.

3. Opioid addiction – I believe that there is much more we can do to save lives and support those struggling with opioids.

In government, New Democrats will declare a public health emergency and commit to working with all levels of government, experts, and Canadians to end the criminalization and stigma of drug addiction, so that people struggling with addiction can get the help they need without fear of arrest, while getting tough on the real criminals; those who traffic in and profit from illegal drugs.

We’ll work with the provinces to support overdose prevention sites and expand access to treatment on demand for people struggling with addiction. We will also launch an investigation into the role drug companies may have played in fueling the opioid crisis, and seek meaningful financial compensation from them for the public costs of this crisis.

Conservatives believe that, given the opportunity and appropriate supports, Canadians who suffer from addiction have the ability to recover.

The cycle of “injecting, overdosing, and reviving” with no adequate assistance to get addicts treatment and into recovery is simply not the type of health care that Canadians deserve. We need to work towards building a system of care where everyone who struggles with addiction is offered treatment and a pathway to recovery.

The Chatham-Kent community plays an important role in keeping children safe and helping families that may need support to keep their children safe.

The public, professionals and those who work directly with children can help families and their children where there are protection concerns by calling Chatham-Kent Children’s Services (CKCS) at 519 352-0440 - 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Children’s Aid Societies, which includes CKCS, provide a broad range of services to children and families where there are concerns about safety and well-being. In addition to visiting children and families in their home, child welfare workers will help families obtain the services they may need, such as parenting or treatment program for problems such as addictions, mental health and anger management. CKCS is part of a broader children’s services sector and we collaborate with a web of community services and resources to provide critical services for struggling families. We will provide in-home visits and support to families.

A call to Chatham-Kent Children’s Services results in an offer of help to a family as we work first and foremost to keep families together. Children’s Aid Societies in Ontario receive more than 165,000 referrals each year from people concerned about the safety or well-being of a child. 2. Carbon tax – The People’s Party of Canada will impose NO carbon taxes or carbon pricing on Canadians. We know that carbon tax/carbon pricing does not help the environment, only helps the government extract more tax dollars from Canadian citizens.

Are you tired of the government telling us that we have to give them more of our money and then they will fix the climate? We sure are. This is why a PPC government will allow this shared jurisdiction of the environment to be placed in the power of the provinces to decide their own plan. Ontario has reduced our emissions by 22 per cent since 2005, without any federal impositions. We know we are on the right track, and we know that rural regions without public transportation options do not deserve to be punished with more taxes on carbon.

3. Opioid addiction – There

is no doubt that the levels of crime have increased dramatically in our region, as well as many ridings in relation to opioid addiction. We are experiencing property theft in every community across Lambton-Kent-Middlesex.

Since the beginning of 2016, over 10,000 Canadians have died from opioid overdose and this is a tragedy we need to address. We need a comprehensive approach for this very complex issue.

The PPC would look at closing loopholes that allow physicians to over-prescribe, as well as patients who move between multiple physicians to obtain multiple prescriptions to decrease the accessibility and availability of opioids.

We would like to see more resources put into our law enforcement to ensure they are adequately staffed to handle their caseloads.

Furthermore, the PPC recognizes the need for more education, awareness, and policy around caring for and addressing the needs of afflicted individuals as well as health care providers. Prevention goes hand in hand with education and the People’s Party would be sure to remove any federal interference or conditions on funding.

2. Carbon tax – Many people from small and rural towns in Canada make their livelihood through farming.

The Green Party will encourage farmers to take up regenerative farming techniques which create actual net-positive environmental contributions by decreasing the need for nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogen fertilizer accounts for the majority of grain and oilseed emissions and can be drastically reduced by modern farming techniques.

The carbon tax on farm fuel is already either rebated or is not charged, so farmers are already sheltered from tax on marked gas and diesel.

The Green Party will encourage the insulation of farm buildings, freeing farmers from the high costs of heating and any associated carbon tax costs. All revenues from a carbon fee would be returned to Canadians as a dividend.

3. Opioid addiction – We will address the opioid crisis as a health-care issue rather than a criminal issue, but declaring a national health emergency.

By decriminalizing drug possession, we can ensure people have access to a screened supply and the medical support needed to combat addictions.

Deaths are more accurately described as poisonings rather than overdoses due to fentanyl contamination. To treat overdoses, the Green Party will increase funding to community-based organizations to test drugs and make Naloxone kits widely available.

Through the classification of the opioid crisis as a healthcare issue, we can approach the problem from a new perspective to treat addiction and prevent its associated problems.

2. Carbon tax – Putting a price on pollution is one the most efficient and effective tools we have to reduce pollution and combat climate change. The carbon pricing system in place in Ontario is revenue neutral, which means all the money collected from carbon pricing is

returned to individuals, families, schools, municipalities and others through the Climate Action Incentive or other programs.

Pricing pollution is designed to give us an incentive to make better choices so that we can leave a healthy environment to our children and grandchildren. Every step you take to lower your carbon footprint is money in your pocket, and reducing carbon pollution is the most important action we can take to fight climate change.

3. Opioid addiction – The opioid crisis is the greatest public health since the AIDS crisis. Under Justin Trudeau, the government has restored harm reduction as a key pillar in our strategy to fight this epidemic.

We passed the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, allowing anyone to give naloxone to someone they fear is dying of narcotic overdose. We invested $231 million in strategies for treatment and prevention of opioid addiction through Health Canada, and we passed laws prohibiting unlawful import of pill presses, allowing inspection of mail weighing less than 30 grams, to cut down on illegal importation of fentanyl and other illicit drugs.

The Conservatives voted against these measures. A re-elected Liberal government will invest to help provinces and communities expand the most effective programs, including safe injection sites. We will make drug treatment court the default for first time non-violent offenders charged with simple possession.
