Scrooge (Marien Hopman) and the Magic Elf (Patrick Rivard) warmly greeted comers and goers Friday morning at WalMart in Chatham, while accepting donations for the Chatham Goodfellows as part of their annual Street Sales campaign.

The festive duo was part of an army of volunteers for the Street Sales campaign, which this year raised in excess of $35,000, up about $3,500 from 2016. Earlier this month, the Porchlight campaign raised $41,900, a mirror image of its 2016 results.

Organizer Sgt. Bryan Knowler of the Chatham-Kent OPP said the dramatic increase in the number of participating children led to the addition of the firefighters and paramedics to the event.

Canadian Pacific Railway police also took part.

“They all jumped right on board,” Knowler said.

Shop With a Cop doubles in size

With 100 kids each having $100 to spend, that translates to $10,000 in community donations to make the event a reality.

Knowler said it wasn’t a problem adding $5,000 to

the event.

“We had fantastic support from the community.

A couple of businesses really stepped up,” he said.

This year, the local school boards chose the children who took part.

“We asked the schools from across Chatham-Kent to pick deserving kids this year,” Knowler said. “We have kids from pretty much every school. We thought we’d mix it up this year.”

In the past, Chatham-Kent Children’s Services has chosen the children. Knowler anticipated Shop With a Cop would hook up with that organization again.

Children between the

ages of five to 12 took part, purchasing gifts for members of their immediate family, and at least one for themselves.

The purpose of Shop With a Cop is to foster positive relationships between children and law enforcement officers.

Knowler said Wal-Mart, as it has every year Shop With a Cop has taken place in Chatham, was an excellent partner and host.

“The store manager sat on our organizing committee. Their employees contribute to it too,” he said. “We couldn’t do it without them.”

ry Ray said they set up checkouts specifically for the Shop With a Cop participants and increased staffing levels for the morning.

“It’s a great day. You see a lot of smiles on kids’ faces,” he said. “And our staff love it. They talk about it all year long. Some staff even come in on their day off.”

Once the children wrapped up their shopping experience, they boarded two school buses and were taken under full police escort to the John D. Bradley Centre, where volunteers wrapped their gifts.

One young Wallaceburg philanthropist in training is learning from his grandma how to help children in need. Kyle Burtch, 4, has been helping his grandma sell tickets for a gift basket to raise money to buy toys for the Chatham Goodfellows’ No Child Without a Christmas campaign. November home sales sizzled The Chatham Voice

Another month, another record for home sales in Chatham-Kent.

The local Association of Realtors said 133 homes changed hands in November. That’s up nearly 10 per cent from November of last year, and a new November record in Chatham-Kent.

Through November of this year, home sales reached 1,377 units, just nine fewer than last year.

Sales were on a record pace until an ice-cold

July, where sales were down 39 per cent from 2016. It has been the only flat month of the year in local real estate sales.

“November set yet another monthly record for home sales, the fourth this year along with February, May and October,” said Kristi Willder, President of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors in a media release. “The records of the past two months have moved activity for the year as a whole to within less than 10 sales of last

year’s record. Regardless of how the December numbers shake out, the bigger picture is that the last two years have been the strongest the local housing market has ever seen. At the same time, with inventories trending at all-time lows, the

average price will be up by about 15 per cent this year.”

The average price of homes sold in November was $190,212, up 17.9 per cent from November 2016.

The year-to-date average price was $185,642,

rising 14.5 per cent from the first 11 months of last year.

New listings numbered 117 units in November, down 5.6 per cent from the same month in 2016.

This was the lowest level for the month in nearly three decades.

There were just 260 active residential listings on the Association’s MLS System at the end of November. This was the lowest level for this time of year in more than 25 years, down 27.4 per cent from November 2016.

Feds approve local pot producer The Chatham Voice

Health Canada has given the thumbs up to a local company to produce cannabis.

AgMedica Bioscience Inc. received the licence under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulation.

In the coming weeks, the company is planning to begin cultivation in the first phase of its indoor Riverview Cultivation Fa-

cility with a current annual production capacity of 6,000 kilograms.

’Tis the season With Christmas mere days away, it seems a very fitting time to look back on what a splendid fall it was in Chatham-Kent.

We’re not talking about the weather – although that was just fine as well – but rather the giving spirit of the community.

Union Gas staff, retirees and corporate overseers donated more than $600,000 to the United Way. That’s a third of the campaign goal coming from one company.

But the smaller-scale giving is also worth mentioning; the help on a more personal level.

There are Alyah and Noah Detailleur, two adolescents who collected enough non-perishable food items and toiletries to fill the back of a pickup truck. They donated it all to help stock the shelves at the Salvation Army food bank.

Or there are the groups and organizations that donate to the Chatham-Kent Children’s Services’ Christmas Project, which provides toys to the children that are in their system. St. Andrew’s Residence, from its staff and residents to their families, donated toys for three siblings in that project.

How about the members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service? The officers, staff, association and board members contribute annually to purchase toys for the Salvation Army to hand out to families in need. Need we mention Shop With a Cop? And then there are the Chatham Goodfellows, who every year work to ensure no child goes without a Christmas in Chatham and families in need also receive food baskets.

It’s a huge undertaking, and one that is accomplished with an army of well-organized volunteers.

From the Porchlight and recently completed Street Sales campaigns to the toy and food packing, and then delivery, it is a great deal of work, with an incredible pay off – the sight of happy faces for families who needed a hand up this holiday season.

Chatham-Kent has its share of grumblers and complainers, but we have more than our share of givers, and they show up in droves at this time of the year.

Even if it’s a toonie dropped into a Salvation Army red kettle, it all counts. And it’s all appreciated.

In praise of Bruce’s musings Sir: I wanted to write in response to Bruce Corcoran’s column in the Dec. 14 Chatham Voice, “No ‘roid rage for this person.” The timing, and my reading of this piece were just perfect. Seven days after reading what you wrote, I will have the delight to have Dr. Manji examining and doing procedures on my nether regions in the name of preventive colon cancer treatment.

So it was with great amusement and interest that I read and re-read your article knowing and being made more aware of what the future would hold for me. I couldn’t agree more with you on the good doc-

tor’s approach and manner regarding all things anal. My consult with him was like discussing the plumbing in my house and not my body. Very factual and open.

So I am actually looking forward to the procedure and all that I will experience. Your column just was the icing on the cake.

My wife and I moved to Chatham just about five years ago from Ottawa and have really grown to love this town and it’s folksy, neighbourly ways. I was and am a news junky and can get my fill from online feeds, but I do greatly appreciate The Chatham Voice’s

local coverage and perspective. You seem to have the knack to write on subjects that are right in line with my view of the world.

Your recent column on Chatham drivers is a perfect example.

Thank you for capturing my view and opinion on drivers who are so insular that they are not aware that they are part of a bigger traffic flow picture.

And there have been numerous other subjects that you have touched on, where after reading, I say, “Bang on Bruce!”

I do love a good barbeque and your Big Green Egg creations leave my

mouth watering as I vicariously go through the meal with you.

I just want to end this note by encouraging you to keep The Voice going and keep writing about what inspires you and where you find your passion. Chatham and the world need the small voices to identify and write about what impacts this world at a very personal level.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas. Looking forward to what strikes your fancy in 2018 and how you will convert those subjects into print.

Infrastructure should be primary focus Sir: Rumour has it that we are looking for a new city hall. I think we need more roads and bridges repaired in Chatham-Kent than the mayor and administration needing

bigger offices.

Now that we have to wait another seven months for the Fifth Street Bridge to open, why not take out the Third

Street Bridge and replace it at the same time? We still have three bridges in the city that can be used, and the bridges could be

done at the same time (as long as the we do not take a page out of Victor Boutin’s book).

FOI attempts an exercise in frustration Sir: In response to the letter to the editor by Don Shropshire, the Municipality’s CAO, critical of the article about myself, as a citizen, trying to get answers from municipal hall as to how and where our tax dollars are being spent. It would seem the municipality, as meaningful as it may be, doesn’t know how to be open and transparent or doesn’t want to be nor understand the difference between fact and truth.

Mr. Shropshire’s concerns (the format of his letter is more indicative of our legal department than his own wording) of my stating five full- or part-time employees handle Freedom of Information requests, that there’s only two. With so many serious municipal challenges, this should not be a concern. Police services and municipal hall have two FOI [Freedom of In-

formation] departments, having five individuals respond to me.

Presumably, in order to justify condemning the article, Mr. Shropshire deemed the article as portraying that C-K has to provide any information requested. He said that’s false. He is correct, however, all my FOIs reflect the rules of legislation.

Mr. Shropshire describes many documents were provided to me, however, most were either not relevant, uninterpretable or incomplete.

I have tried several times over months, without success, to obtain detailed accounting of our 2017 budget finances, as is statutorily allowed.

C-K keeps denying, hence, why I keep requesting.

Among dozens of untitled or ambiguous budget areas I have found $25M identified only as “Other Expenses” and “Internal

Allocations.” There is $1.1M in the police service budget under the same description.

Mr. Shropshire states in my case they are dealing with one piece of paper containing confidential information. This is untrue. I’ve asked for financial verification to the Fire/EMS proposals “B” and “C.” That which I asked for is legislatively allowed. C-K chose to identify their documents as being on one sheet along with confidential information that cannot be disclosed. This way they are attempting not to have to disclose true costs of the amalgamation. Their documents also failed to describe over $300 million in employee lifecycle costs and numerous other costs.

C-K filed a 24-page defense not wanting to disclose financial details.

Imagine the cost to have

legal and other employees go to this extent to prohibit a citizen from accessing how tax dollars are being spent.

I did have one unsuccessful appeal, due to my application wording – my fault. My re-appeal to obtain proper financial accounting of the CSX/WC Rail will be successful and will add much light to seemingly secret-Byzantium C-K accounting.

Mr. Shropshire states contrary to the impression fostered by the article, the municipality routinely provides most residents with information not requiring them to go thru an FOI process, instead obtained by telephone. C-K placed in writing I am required to go thru the FOI process.

Well water issue hits close to home Sir: This is my response to a letter from Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton, expressing his concerns about North Kent Wind projects in his riding.

Mr. McNaughton: The recently damaged wells you are referring to are that of my life long neighbour’s.

A turbine was just erected about 400 meters behind our house also.

during the protests last summer.

Following the North Kent 1 Wind orientation, I attended before the project began, I made it clear in writing that they were not welcome here.

Municipal Dog Tags Dog tags are more than a jingly adornment on your pet’s collar. Not only are they required for all dogs over the age of sixteen-weeks under the municipality’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-law, but they can also help your furry friend find their way home if they ever get lost.

The application for licensing includes the name, sex, colour and breed of the dog, as well as the date of the animal’s most recent rabies vaccination. Other very important information includes the address of the dog’s home and the name, address and telephone number of the owner. If applicable, the details of any microchip identification is included as well. Applications are to be submitted to the poundkeeper, along with the appropriate license fee. Tags are required to be attached to the dog anytime the dog is on public property.

It’s important to update your information with the municipality if you move, change your phone number, or get a new dog. Dog licenses must be renewed each year prior to March 31. Failure to do so could result in a $200 fine, and make it harder to identify your pup if they ever wander off.

The Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent’s fundraising for a new building received a $100,000 booster shot recently, as Essex & Kent Insurance donated towards the project.

The centre, located cur-

rently on Lark Street, is looking to build a larger facility on McNaughton Avenue in Chatham. The new centre will be double the size of the existing one, at 50,000 square feet.

It’s a $28.5-million project. A total of $22.5 million is to come from the province, but that has left an additional $6 million

in local fundraising required. Municipal council recently allocated $1.5 million towards the project, and centre personnel continue to seek additional funding.

Kevin Konecny president and CEO of Essex & Kent, said the company sees the value of having such a facility in Cha-

tham-Kent. He said the treatment of the daughter of Dan Lundy of Lundy Insurance helped convince him to support the project.

“It’s a very cool story on Dan’s daughter and the use they get,” he said, referring to the therapy pool.

Bench building at the ALC Local seniors busy as beavers making benches for 2018 IPM

Give the men and women of the Active Lifestyle Centre’s (ALC) woodshop a task, and they’ll attack it with zeal.

The latest undertaking by the woodshop folks is a project for next year’s International Plowing Match, which is coming to Chatham-Kent. They are building 250 benches to be used as rest stops all over the nearly 900 acres of land near Pain Court that will be used for the IPM next year.

Judy Lawton, IPM committee member, said the bench idea came up, and the committee wasn’t sure who to ask to get the job done.

“We were trying to think of different options of who could do this for us,” she said.

Enter the ALC. “They came up with the prototype,” Lawton said of the sturdy spruce

benches.

Linda Lucas, executive director of the ALC, said management and the board are thankful the woodshop crew accepted the bench-building challenge.

“We’re very proud of these guys.”

While the woodshop volunteers are churning out 20 benches a week, it’s not all business in there.

“When we came to see the first bench, they were so funny. They are enjoying themselves,” Lawton said. “This is a good firsttime partnership.”

For the folks running the saws, putting together the benches is all in a day’s fun.

John Davis said the first few benches were the challenge, but once measurements were confirmed the work is a bit repetitive.

Dan Vandenbrorre said the work is “no big deal.”

Earlier this year, the

woodshop crew was tasked, with the help of the Helping Hands group from Union Gas, with building a mini-golf course to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.

The IPM benches should see a lot of use, Lawton said, given the size of the IPM’s location.

“It’s a lot of walking,” she said. “It’s also nice to just sit and people watch.”

Lawton said all the benches are available for sponsorship as well.

Each will have a plaque acknowledging the local Plowman’s Association, as well as the ALC. There is room in the middle for the laser-etched plaque to be personalized for the bench’s sponsor.

Sponsorship price for a bench is $450, and some of that money will go to the ALC, Lawton said.

When the IPM is over, benches are returned to the sponsors.

Carroll to lead C-K realtors in ’18

Royal LePage’s Steve Carroll will tackle the role of president of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors for next year.

He earned the nod at the Holiday Members’ Meeting of the association, which took place Dec. 13 at Club Lentinas.

Carroll succeeds Kristi Willder as president.

He’s taking over at a time where the housing market typically cools off with the weather.

Only this isn’t a typical time.

Fresh off a hot November where 133 homes changed hands in Chatham-Kent, Willder said it’s still a busy time for local realtors.

Carroll concurred.

“Normally this time of year is when things are slowing down. It hasn’t,” he said. “But the lack of inventory is great for sell-

ers.”

Throughout the year, home sales have been brisk, but what the local market is lacking is volume of homes for sale. That low inventory makes new listings hot commodities.

Carroll said sellers are seeing multiple offers, often at the asking price and sometimes above.

“I have never seen this type of activity in the 20plus years I’ve been in it,” he said of the local real estate market.

In November, the average price of a home was $190,000, up nearly 18 per cent from the same time a year ago. Carroll doesn’t see the market changing any time soon.

He expects to continue to see a strong percentage of buyers coming from out of town as well.

“You have people from out of the area – east of London, or out west – who can sell their home

at a very good price and move here. Our housing prices and our weather are attractive,” he said.

“People come out of the high-cost areas who are first time buyers and can afford a home here.

People retire, buy a nice home here and still can put money in the bank.”

About one third of sales are to out-of-town customers.

Carroll offered some advice to people looking to buy a home – sell yours first.

“Few offers are conditional on sale of your home anymore. We tell people they need to get their home sold first,” he said.

The association also donated to a trio of local charities at their gathering last week, as the Foundation of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Outreach for Hunger and Hope Haven all benefitted.

New field house for soccer The Chatham Voice

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has started construction on a new field house behind the Health and Family Services Building on Lark Street in Chatham.

The project is the result of a partnership between the municipality, the Chatham Youth Soccer Associ-

ation (CYSA), Community Living Chatham-Kent (CLCK), and the C-K Public Health Unit.

The field house will provide fully accessible washrooms, a canteen, and a new storage area for the CYSA. Four portable toilets currently service the soccer fields, while youth soccer equipment is stored off

site.

The new canteen will be operated by CLCK as part of its skills training program.

The CYSA looks forward to the building’s completion to meet their growing demand.

“The facility provides a service to 1,250 boys and girls weekly,” said Martin Aarts, the administrative

director of CYSA. “Up to 800 players and spectators can attend on a soccer night.”

The $420,000 project received contributions of $75,000 and $35,000 from the CYSA and the Public Health Unit respectively. The balance is funded from the 2017 Capital Budget and Parkland Reserve.

C-K wants input on pot shops

Municipality seeks to have a say on where cannabis vendors will locate The Chatham Voice

Chatham-Kent will be home to at least one provincially operated cannabis retail store by July of next year.

The municipality recently received the news from the provincial Finance Ministry, which is seeking a partnership between the newly formed Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation and hosting communities.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope said in a media release, “We look forward to meeting with provincial officials to ensure that any store located in Chatham-Kent is done so only after the municipality has had direct input on its location.”

“It’s important,” Hope continued, “that we en-

sure our local zoning bylaws are respected and that the wishes of the community play a role in where any stores will be placed.”

He said it is still his belief that the municipality deserves some compensation through a percentage of sales or some other method to ensure that it can meet any issues that arise.

“If there are social issues that arise from the legalization of marijuana and government retail stores, it shouldn’t be the municipality’s responsibility to bear the costs while the federal and provincial governments rake in the profits,” he said.

In April 2017, the Government of Canada introduced legislation to legalize cannabis across

Canada. In response, the Government of Ontario introduced the provincial Cannabis Act that would support the transition to legalized cannabis in Ontario, and the Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation Act, that would establish the Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation (OCRC) as a subsidiary corporation under the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to retail cannabis.

Helping the homeless

It’s a lot of work, but the payoff is worth it.

That according to Geri Tong of Campbell AME Church, referring to the creation of sleeping mats made out of milk bags for the homeless.

Tong said 400-500 milk bags go into the creation of one mat.

Once the bags are collected, it falls upon her husband, Ken, to prepare them for crocheting. He’s tasked with cutting them all into strips.

Most of a milk bag is used, as only the top flap is lost, Tong said.

So far this year, in a little over a month, Tong said they’ve had about 2,400 milk bags donated. That doesn’t include the bags some of the volunteer crochet crew members gath-

er on their own.

“We started this as a project through our mission society,” she said.

“No two are the same.”

Tong said the mats don’t have to be made out of the milk bags.

“They can be made out of plastic shopping bags, but they are not as thick,” she said. “We make handles out of the plastic shopping bags so a person can carry the mat easily.”

Tong said the plastic mats are surprisingly warm, and durable.

“I tried crocheting one in the summer and had to stop,” she said. “Plus, bugs won’t live in them and they will dry quickly if it’s a rainy or snowy night.”

The mats may be catching on. Tong said she and other committee members took a mat to an an-

nual missionary project conference, and the bishop liked the idea so much he said he’d like to see it made into a Canadian project.

The mats are already extending beyond Chatham-Kent’s borders.

“It’s spreading to Windsor. But these ones, I’d like to keep in Chatham-Kent,” Tong said of the mats the local members have made this year.

“Once we’ve supplied to the Chatham-Kent homeless, then we can branch out.”

Finding the local homeless can be a challenge at times, but Tong said if her group knows of anyone living under the bridges or on the streets, they’ll stop by to offer a mat.

“If we can find where the homeless are at, we will gladly take them a mat and a blanket.”

Arena upgrades applauded

Committee members who decided how to spend $100,000 to upgrade Memorial Arena in Chatham showcased the results recently.

Kraft Hockeyville in 2015, include a hands-free main entrance, a bright LED sign out front, and better heating in the spectator area.

Bennett said the entranceway generates the most feedback from the public. Hockey players and figure skaters can

haul their gear and not worry about having to pull open a heavy door and then drag their bags around it. Plus, the doors improve accessibility for the disabled.

he said. “And the people love it.”

The heating improvements are in the south end of the rink, he added, where four more heaters were added.

Dennis Parker, committee member, hopes the improvements convince another 17 people to take notice – members of Chatham-Kent council.

“Maybe the city will want to put a little more money into the arena now,” he said.

Parker added the Memorial Arena is in need of improved plumbing, paint, and improvements in the dressing rooms in regard to gender.

“There is still life in this building. I feel this building could stand for another 100 years,” he said of the structure, which was built in the late 1940s.

“We need the support of our community.”

Committee member Rebecca Reimer said the Hockeyville improvements have breathed life into a venerable facility.

“We hope everyone will get excited about the arena again,” she said.

If the municipality opts to replace Memorial Arena, the improvements can become mobile. Bennett said they are all transferable.

The committee also includes Maroons superfan Chad Peterson – a driving

force behind the Hockeyville effort locally – as well as Mark Phelan and Rick Walker. Reimer said Phelan got it all going.

“He was definitely an unsung hero. He was a driving force behind it as well,” she said. “He believed in Chad and got the rest of us on the committee.”

Recognize the signs of diabetes “Today, there are 11 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. Every three minutes, another Canadian is diagnosed. Chances are that diabetes affects you or someone you know.”

The above is taken from the Diabetes Canada website and is, to me, a shocking statistic, and even more shocking to me, is now I am part of those statistics.

Three weeks into a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, I really shouldn’t be shocked. I knew my numbers were in the prediabetes range two years ago and I did the sessions with an excellent dietician at the Thamesview Family Health Team, who helped me to understand that carbs convert to sugar in your system. We went over what were healthier choices that I could fit into my diet, the diabetic food guide and what foods to avoid.

So what happened? I thought there was no diabetes in my family so I couldn’t understand why I was having “sugar issues.” Then I found out I had an uncle who was diabetic and lost his sight. And that the extra weight I carry is in the worst possible spot. And I wasn’t using what I learned and eating properly. And I was stressed out with a busy teen and work and skipping meals or eating fast food.

All that combined pushed my blood sugar way too high and led to symptoms I should have recognized – getting up three or four times a night to pee, desperate thirst, extreme fatigue and blurry vision.

Once I actually checked my sugar, it was very high and good friends pushed me to get medical help right away.

With the diabetes diagnosis was dangerously high blood pressure, and I was put on meds right away. What was made very clear to me as well was if I didn’t want to go blind, have a heart attack or stroke, or lose a foot, I needed to take my diagnosis seriously and make lifestyle changes right away.

So three weeks in, I have read more about diabetes, the proper foods to eat and when, and

including foods considered “healthy.”

Too often, we don’t listen to our bodies and what they are trying to tell us. I should have listened, but thankfully I have friends and family who weren’t afraid to read me the riot act. It is up to me now to take my meds, eat properly and lose some weight so my body doesn’t have to work so

hard.

What I want to share is to not ignore symptoms, or think you have it handled when obviously you don’t. I’m glad I have a supportive family and friends to help through the mental and physical changes I need to make to keep myself healthy.

I want to be one of those model patients who does

everything they are told, and I know it will be a challenge – life doesn’t just change to suit your situation. You have to recognize what is important and put your main focus on it.

Sure, it’s going to take some extra planning and avoiding foods I love, but I tell myself every day I am worth it and so is being there for my daughter as she grows up.
