from the HEAD OF SCHOOL Making excellence even better at CHCA Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy turned 22 this August and like most 22-year-olds, we have emerged from adolescence and stand as an adult. We’re still young enough to take on new challenges and grow, but we also rest on the foundation of a strong mission, vision and core values. These next ten to twenty years will be full of opportunity as we examine various aspects of our programming to ensure they are of the highest quality with the greatest effectiveness for our students. For instance, we drilled down into our athletics program and philosophy last year with the goal of creating a singular CHCA voice and community. At the conclusion of the 2011 fall season, every one of our teams won twice and advanced well into the playoffs. In some cases, they even came home with state titles. Our theme this year as a school – “Moving our community forward” – complements the Board’s strategic planning process, an exercise that will help us decide what CHCA needs to focus on in the coming years. We’re looking at ideas like enacting strategic compensation, employing new methods of assessing student achievement to better inform curriculum and instruction, enhancing international student programs, nurturing a healthy and dynamic student culture, maximizing the use of technology for student engagement, fostering leadership and gaining the most from our Christ-centered culture. These are only a few of the opportunities that will move us forward as a thriving and successful community. For most 22-year-olds, the future is wide open with possibilities. CHCA is the same way: as our school leadership gives our teachers and staff the tools they need to continue to inspire our students to learn, lead and serve, amazing things will happen here. God bless you for the part you play in helping us make that a reality.

New orchestra shell graces CHCA stage
Thanks to a generous donation from Mr. and Mrs. Carl and Edyth Lindner Jr. and family, CHCA’s vocal and instrumental music groups sound better than ever. The new orchestra shell, similar to ones used by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops, directs the sound waves back to the audience rather than allowing them to dissipate back, up and into the wings behind the stage. The result: our student musicians can hear themselves better; the audience hears a warmer, clearer sound; and acoustic ensembles can play without the need for microphones. Sit in Lindner Theater during a performance and you might even be able to pick out the individual instruments. The shell will be used this year at concerts by our orchestras, high school and middle school choirs, Electric Jazz Orchestra, Lab Band, Steel Drum Band and the Genesis Jazz Band.
“Knowing the difference that it would make in our theater, it has been a dream of mine and the Music Department for many years to have one of these,” says Mona Summers, Director of CHCA Fine Arts. “We are very lucky to have this shell and our music faculty and performers love it!” 2

Ask most teenagers to give up some of their allowance or pocket money and you’re likely to get a roll of the eyes. But at Alumni Chapel this April, CHCA’s Class of 2011 was asked to contribute to the Gift of Giving annual campaign and the response was incredible. Each senior was given an envelope containing a $1 bill and a $2 bill (made possible by a generous donation from an alumni parent). “As you prepare to leave CHCA, we hope you’ll remember the ways your teachers, coaches and administrators invested in you,” Alumni Relations Coordinator Tracy Wolcott said to the chapel audience. “Giving to CHCA is a way to recognize that investment and give back to the place that gave so much to you.” Darris Sneed ’09 then took the stage to tell his own story of receiving financial aid funded by the Gift of Giving. “Because people gave, I was able to attend CHCA,” he told the audience. “Alumni caring enough to give even one dollar benefited people like me. This is your chance to sew into a place that sewed into you.” He then challenged the senior class to donate the $1 bill back and hang on to the $2 bill to give next year. A whopping 89% – 82 students – responded by giving their dollar back at the end of chapel. Additionally, the rest of CHCA’s alumni were asked separately to match the Class of 2011’s contribution; 72 answered with a gift. “We know our alumni may think they can’t make a difference by giving a small amount,” Wolcott says. “But they really can have an impact. We want CHCA to be one of the places they’re proud to support – no matter how much they give – and start a lifelong tradition of investing in their teachers and the students that come after them.” Pictured left: Darris Sneed ’09 appeals to the Class of 2011 during Alumni Chapel in April

Athletic Hall of
Excellence
Kevin Nead ’04 and Kasey Carpenter ’06, the newest inductees into the CHCA Athletic Hall of Excellence, were honored September 2 at the first home football game of the season. The two were recognized in a pre-game ceremony that featured a visit from the Navy Leap Frogs (an elite team of Navy SEALs and SWCC commandos), who parachuted into the stadium and presented the game ball. “Both of these athletes embody what a CHCA student should be after graduation, which is living a life full of passion for learning, leading and serving,” Athletic Director Matt Coleman said. “It’s a privilege to induct them into our 2011 Athletic Hall of Excellence class.” Both swimmers, Kevin and Kasey set multiple records during their careers at CHCA and garnered numerous state titles. Kevin was a top three finisher in the 500-yard freestyle three straight years at the state championships; Kasey collected 13 state medals (including four individual) and 16 district medals (eight gold, four silver and two bronze). Both were named U.S. High School All-Americans. After graduating from CHCA, Kevin attended the University of Florida where he was fivetime All-SEC, a two-time athletic All-American, and a first team Academic All-American. He is now working toward his M.D. at the Stanford University School of Medicine and was recently awarded the prestigious Gates-Cambridge Scholarship to fund a master’s degree at the University of Cambridge in England. Kasey also made a name for herself after leaving CHCA, first at the University of Wisconsin, then at Miami University. At Miami, she broke the school record and was a two-time MAC silver medalist in the 200-yard backstroke. In 2008, she was an Olympic trials qualifier in the 200-meter backstroke. Kasey graduated from Miami University in 2011 with a degree in communications and is currently employed by RPP Containers in Cincinnati.

Window in Miracle Commons commissioned by CHCA family Miracle Commons at MSL High School has always been the perfect place to study, catch up with friends and watch people go by. Its airy, vaulted ceiling and sunlight-drenched space also makes it a great place to leave a beautiful, lasting mark on CHCA. The Kuremsky family (Michael and Wendy are parents of Tanner ’12 and Caroline ’14) got the chance to do just that at the 2010 Celebration auction when they bid on and won a custom stained glass window to be installed in Miracle Commons. MSL HS art teacher Tim Hilderbrand created the window (which depicts a cardinal under the wing of an eagle) with design input from the Kuremskys. “The cardinal is symbolic for their family, while the eagle represents CHCA,” Hilderbrand says. “If you look closely at the wings, you can see purple and green in them. We chose to use 20 beveled squares around the border to commemorate CHCA’s 20th anniversary.” Next time you’re in the high school, be sure to look up and see this beautiful addition to Miracle Commons.

Susan Miller Scholarship awarded At Armleder’s 8th grade graduation this spring, Jada Kiner was awarded the first ever Susan Miller Scholarship. Jada (now a freshman at CHCA’s MSL High School) received the award for demonstrating a serious work ethic, outstanding grades and great promise for the future as an 8th grader. The scholarship was established by CHCA founders Phyllis and Ron McSwain to acknowledge Ms. Miller’s dedication in guiding Armleder from a dream to a shining light in our city. Carl and Edyth also gave the money to build CHCA’s beautiful high school theatre, which has attracted students passionate about the arts and the excellent faculty who teach them.
Making Armleder a light in the city
Monday, October 17 marked the passing of a great friend of CHCA, Carl H. Lindner Jr. The man known as “Mr. Cincinnati” blessed so many with his generosity, faith and commitment to family, and Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy always held a special place in his heart. Following are just a few of the ways he touched CHCA. Our location
CHCA’s campus was initially going to be located in another suburb of Cincinnati. When that fell through, Mr. Lindner’s wife, Edyth recalled a piece of land in the northeast part of town Carl had purchased. That land, generously given to the founding families, is where the elementary and middle school buildings now stand.
As the years went by, the Otto Armleder School became a very strong focus for Mr. and Mrs. Lindner. They saw the amazing learning opportunities at Armleder and knew that school could have a big impact on the city they loved. Of the $45,000,000 that has been invested in Armleder, more than $28,000,000 came from the Lindner family; much of the remaining funding came from Mr. Lindner’s friends. CHCA Head of School Randy Brunk recalls this pivotal conversation: “I sat in a meeting several years ago where Carl said the following: ‘I have been thinking a lot about giving lately. Two things I know: I am better at making money than figuring out who to give to. Therefore, I am limiting my giving to those organizations that I feel I really know and love. And secondly, I want to do my givin’ while I’m livin’, so I am knowin’ where it’s goin’! Therefore, let’s set up Armleder to be to be the best it can be and make sure highly capable students head up to the high school.’ That was followed by an announcement of a gift from [his sons] Keith and Carl of $16,000,000,” Brunk says. “That is a rare meeting and one that I will always cherish.” As CHCA says goodbye to one of our biggest champions, we will mourn the loss of a great friend and supporter. But more importantly, we should be inspired by the life he led and challenge ourselves to carry on his legacy of generosity, faith and family.
Generosity: leading by example
During CHCA’s early days, Mr. Lindner not only gave to the school but challenged others to give as well. At a Grandparents Day celebration during a critical fund drive, he rose and told the audience that if they could reach a significant giving goal right then and there, he would match it – and they did. Later, as each new phase of buildings were contemplated, Mr. and Mrs. Lindner not only gave to the campaigns but used their influence and enthusiasm to encourage friends and family to do the same. When it was time to build a football field and track at the high school in the mid-1990s, Mr. Lindner’s

Jon Myers, Class of 1995 Valedictorian
After CHCA I… earned degrees from Emory University in 1999 (bachelor’s degrees in Jon with daughter Cecilia Grace both English literature and biology) and my M.D. from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 2005. I did an internship in internal medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics 2005-06 and did my residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University/Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in 2009. Where I live: Twin Falls, ID My family: I’ve been married to Michelle, a physician who specializes in nephrology, for three years. We have a one-year-old daughter, Cecilia Grace Myers.
What I’m doing now: I am an attending physician in physical medicine & rehabilitation at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls, ID. I have a busy medical practice and also serve as the medical director of the Gwen Neilsen Anderson Inpatient Rehabilitation Center at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. I am also the medical director of outpatient rehabilitation services at St. Luke’s.
My advice for today’s students: Be cool and stay in school. Parties will come and go, but grades are forever. Study hard and set attainable goals.

After CHCA I… earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Virginia and my M.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. 8

My family: I’m married to Jessica (Martin) Snyder ’98. We have three children: Lucy (age 4 and in preschool at CHCA), Emery (age 2) and a foster daughter (9 months).
What I’m doing now: I’m in my fifth and chief year of general surgery residency at Good Samaritan Hospital. I’m applying for a fellowship in colorectal surgery, which I will do for one year beginning in July 2012, then I plan to join a practice here in Cincinnati. My interests are spending as much time with my wife and kids as possible, which can be difficult given the demands of my schedule.
My advice for today’s students: Life really is great, so enjoy it. Don’t get caught up in waiting for some divine plan to unfold in front of you – rather, do what you enjoy and pursue anything and everything that interests you. God will bless your life and your decisions as long as they’re in keeping with His character.
Ryan Kloster, Class of 1998 Salutatorian
After CHCA I… earned my bachelor’s degree in economics from Emory University in 2001 and a master’s degree in Ryan with wife Natasha international political and daughter Thea economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2002. I was named a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Charterholder in 2006 and a CAIA (Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst) Designee in 2007. Where I live: Singapore
My family: I married my wife Natasha in London in 2005. Our daughter, Dorothea (Thea) was born in March of last year.
What I’m doing now: I work as an equity strategist in a macro hedge fund covering Europe, Asia and emerging markets.
My advice for today’s students: • There is absolutely no substitute for hard work. This is most true during adversity. • Whatever field you choose for your career, try and study at least some philosophy. It’s not likely to get you a job, but it teaches you to think. • Travel as much as you can. • You really should remember your sunscreen. • Do things that scare you. This is not about thrill-seeking, but rather choices in life that challenge your boundaries. • Never, at any cost, or for any perceived goal, lose sight of your priorities.

My advice for today’s students: Be bold and venture outside of what’s familiar and comfortable. I’ve grown the most mentally and spiritually when I’ve put myself in new and challenging environments.

After CHCA I… earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2004 and a master’s in educational leadership from Concordia University in 2011.

My family: I married my wife Julie in 2004. We have two daughters, Eliana (3 ½) and Annabelle (2 in January). We are also expecting our third child at the end of January. What I’m doing now: Mine is a story of ongoing education… I work in the Alcohol & Substance Use Research Institute at USF where I conduct event-related potential (brainwave) research on factors that influence individuals to drink. I also teach here at USF. I am currently teaching a Drugs & Behavior course, which is pretty fun, and also do psychotherapy. I’m planning on pursuing a tenure-track professor position after I complete my Ph.D. Apart from work, I enjoy being a father, and to be honest between work and being a father there isn’t much else I do.
My advice for today’s students: Take your time choosing a “career path.” There are many things worth knowing that won’t necessarily make you money, and “carpe diem” doesn’t necessarily mean that things that take time aren’t worth the effort.

What I’m doing now: Since 2004, I have been a math teacher at New Trier High School in the North Chicago suburbs. I love working with high school students and part of that is because of how much I enjoyed high school at CHCA!
My advice for today’s students: As you make decisions about your future plans, be open to the leading of the LORD. Explore every opportunity you can because you may discover a passion you never knew you had.

Make an effort to understand how other people and cultures see the world both locally and internationally. Serve the communities around you. Be a volunteer; share your passions with others. Be curious.

in 2008 through their co-op program. After graduation, I joined Danaher Tools and worked at two facilities in Radford, VA (near Virginia Tech). There I met a Virginia Tech mechanical engineer/MBA grad, Mike Cavalieri, who would become my husband. We got married in Boston in 2010 and I continued to work for Danaher in a different manufacturing facility up north.

What I’m doing now: I am currently the resident expert for Lean Tools at the manufacturing plant – I teach, run projects and help solve problems. We purchased our first house this March near Bean Town. We love to travel, see new sights, enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family. We often find ourselves down at Virginia Tech Football games or up north on the slopes in the winter.

My advice for today’s students: Find where your talents are, and invest your time in those things. These are the things that set you apart, and you should not forget that.

After CHCA I… earned a bachelor’s degree from Ashland Katie and husband Josh University in 2006; in 2010 I finished my J.D. at the University at Buffalo (including a year of law school at Charles University in Prague) and passed both the Massachusetts and New York bar exams. Where I live: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – we moved here over the summer from Geneva, Switzerland. My family: married to Josh Folkerth
What I’m doing now: I can’t work here in Malaysia so I’ve been spending my time working on my French and my golf game. I am also planning a lot of traveling to make the most of our time located here. We are looking forward to spending two weeks in Vietnam next month, South Africa over Christmas and New Year’s, and New Zealand next March. My advice for today’s students: Don’t be afraid to follow you dreams. It just might work out.

What I’m doing now: Making my way through medical school and preparing to get married in April at Union Terminal in Cincinnati. My advice for today’s students: Don’t pigeonhole yourself. Take a variety of classes in a variety of subjects when you get to college. You don’t want to find out your senior year that you want to go into economics and all you’ve taken is art classes.

What I’m doing now: Studying and preparing to be a doctor. Also, I love being actively involved in service, cycling along the Olentangy Trail in Columbus, and am hoping to find a good weighted keyboard to play in my apartment! My advice for today’s students: Work hard, but try to never lose sight of the joy of learning! Most importantly, find your passions and use them to serve others, thus serving the Lord. If you do this, you will have the strength of purpose to pick yourself up from your darkest days.

What I’m doing now: God willing, I’ll be starting medical school at Ohio State next fall. I will be a student for a very long time! I really like studying the brain, so I’m thinking of specializing in either neurology or neuro-radiology. I’ve been doing research with a neurosurgeon at OSU who specializes in deep brain stimulation, which is a very exciting field.
My advice for today’s students: Make God your first priority. Try to look for the image of God in others, which will help you to love them better. Don’t procrastinate! (I’m still working on this one; it’s better to break those habits early!) Push yourself to do the best/be the best you can be in every area of your life. You will make mistakes, but look at them as learning experiences. High school is not the end of your life; it’s only the beginning. Keep the relationships worth holding on to (including teachers), but know that your friends will grow and change (and so will you). Your best friends right now may not necessarily be your best friends in ten years, but you will learn to be okay with that.

What I’m doing now: Last summer I interned with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in their tax practice’s Cincinnati office. Next summer, I will be interning with PwC again in Denver, CO in their audit practice. I enjoy running and participated in my fourth half-marathon this fall with my sister [Class of 2011 Salutatorian Sal Mangels]. I also enjoy Spanish, rock climbing, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
My advice for today’s students: I guess I have two pieces of advice: one, work hard in school and extracurricular activities, but be sure to take time off to enjoy yourself and spend time with your family because when you move off to college, life gets busier. Two, learn a foreign language and minor in it in college. As the world is becoming more and more global and internationally connected, being able to speak another language only makes you more marketable to future employers.

After CHCA I… went to The Ohio State University where I’m a junior majoring in accounting and minoring in Spanish. I am part of the Honors Cohort Program within the Fisher College of Business, a selective program of 30 students who participate in a year-long intensive academic program focusing on leadership, team building and presentation skills through applied and service learning. What I’m doing now: I’m exploring an academic hobby in the Near Eastern Studies department, where I am studying the development of Christian traditions from an archaeological and anthropological viewpoint. Outside of class, my primary investment is in the Baja SAE Racing Team, which is a team of students that designs, builds and races an off-road vehicle each year for international competition. Last year, I was the leader for the flotation sub-team, which provided the flotation and water propulsion systems that allowed our vehicle to drive across deep water obstacles. We placed tenth in two international competitions last year, competing against teams from Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and others. I am also active in my housing community and my church. My advice for today’s students: There is no “right way” to go through college. There’s no cut-and-dry, fool-proof, step-by-step guide to success. College life, and life in general for that matter, are full of twists and turns and stumbling blocks which will lead you to places you never expected to go. You’ll learn as much without the classroom as you will within, and you will gain new perspectives and see yourself grow. There will be friends to keep you company along the way, but your path to your next graduation ceremony is completely your own – so own it.

Brad Stinson has been busy since graduating from CHCA: he married his wife Jennifer on January 1, 2005 and moved to Raleigh, NC to take a sales position with Liberty Mutual, then in the fall of 2006 was promoted to Sales Manager and moved to Nashville, TN. The couple had their first child, Caleb Michael, in 2007. “Since then, I’ve been promoted to Branch Manager in Nashville and we had our second child, Grayson Grant, in 2009. We love Nashville and belong to a great church where we are involved in the children’s, women’s and men’s ministries.”

Sal Churi graduated with honors from The University of Chicago Law School in June and is currently working as a corporate lawyer at Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago. Kevin Nead started a master’s degree this year in epidemiology at the University of Cambridge in England through a scholarship from the Gates-Cambridge Trust. “Beyond school, I am looking forward to a generous 12

Nicholas Petricca’s indie-rock band Walk the Moon has been playing around the country, and after a long underground journey signed this summer with major label RCA. “We are very grateful for the rare opportunities ahead and will be releasing our debut album in early 2012. Joe Polzin works for Humana Insurance Company just outside Madison, WI. Joe married wife Jennifer in August 2009 and the couple roots for the Green Bay Packers every weekend with their basset hound, Charlie. Also, Joe and Jennifer just ran their first marathon together in October.

Scott Elfers lives in Cincinnati and currently works as the shipping manager at PM Company in Fairfield, which manufactures paper rolls (like cash register receipts) for several different companies. “I coached varsity basketball at CHCA for two years and now am coaching boys’ varsity basketball at Cincinnati Country Day. I’m finishing up my bachelor’s degree in business administration from Wilmington College at night while I work and will graduate in June 2012.” Jenna Ghizas moved to Kenya in October to pursue a dream God placed on her heart two years ago. “My team and I will be here for one more year working with a group of internally displaced people in a small city called Maai Maihu. We are working with about 45 families to help them get on their feet and become self-sustainable. For four years they have been displaced from their homes and living in tents made out of trash. Our plan is to help them in five different areas: get the camp clean water, buy more land so that they can expand and build houses, develop a community center so that they can gather together, and provide jobs for both men and women. A lot of work and

2007 Amelia Glenchur switched majors last fall and will be walking in May with a December 2012 graduation. She will be finishing her college career with an overseas internship, hopefully in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Erin (Phelps) Suer spent four years studying electronic media at the University of Dayton after graduating from CHCA. At UD she was on the improvisation team and performed in several theater productions. “While studying I met Charlie Suer, a fellow Dayton Flyer, and we were engaged after a year and a half of dating. We married this summer on July 23 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and are currently residing in Louisville. I’m working on my master’s in women’s and gender studies at the University of Louisville, and earned a teaching assistantship that includes a full ride and the opportunity to work in the classroom with undergrads. (Charlie has a similar assistantship in his PhD program in math.) I’m hoping to use my degree and teaching experience to establish a career teaching about gender and media. Life as a CHCA grad has been going pretty well!” Kyle Smith and Rachael Arington ’09 were married at the Green Acres Arts Center in Indian Hill on August 6. CHCA alumni in the wedding included Natalie Marks ‘09, Megan Conway ‘09, Sean Smith ‘07, Jeremy Smith ‘11 and Melissa Smith ‘13. CHCA would not be what it is today without the people who chose to invest in our school. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FINANCE COMMITTEE On behalf of the Board of Trustees Finance Committee, I am pleased to report that BKD, LLP, our independent auditors, issued a “clean” opinion regarding CHCA’s financial statements for the year ending June 30, 2011. This clean opinion signifies the auditor’s belief that our financial statements accurately represent the financial position of CHCA. Portions of the financial statements are included on the previous pages. You may review BKD’s audit report in its entirety by contacting Mike Wallace in the Business Office at (513) 247-0900. Even in these economically challenging times, our school administrators, department heads and staff work diligently to provide our students the best education available while staying within our budget. We are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated and credible financial team overseeing our CHCA community. Mike and his staff are to be commended on a job well done. As we move forward, I want to assure you that the Board remains focused on maintaining a high level of value for this Christ-centered institution of academic excellence.
