The Show must Go On… Nothing could stop Premia India Runway Week SE 2014 finale to go on”, said Tarun Shienh, CMD Premia Group. After the great success and appreciation that Premia India Runway week earned in 2 days came with a surprise on the finale. The day which was most important to sum up the success of the event… the day to showcase the best designs of the renowned designers… the day with so many celebrities… was welcomed with a notice from NDMC with a sudden cancellation of the venue. A wave of confusion moved with a speed among the designers and the models. This news suddenly changed the glamorous ambience to a place where models designers and other people were seen sitting with gloomy faces without any clue that what would happen next. The organizing team tried their best approaching NDMC officials but due to Good Friday and the official holiday all was in vain. The venue was shifted in just 1 hour from Talkatora stadium to White Waters in Connaught place, where the finale of Premia India Runway Week SE 2014 was successfully summed up with great success. It was for the first time in Indian History of fashion industry that the show was not cancelled even after such a big hurdle, but was taken to a height of success where the guest, designers and models enjoyed the show and appreciated the energy of the team that was put together to make this event a huge success. The designers for the final day were Swati Modo, Faraz Manan (Pakistan designer) with Gunjan Soni, Varija Bajaj, Rajdeep Ranawat (Finale Designer) After the show Tarun Shienh, CMD Premia Group said, “I am happy to see the team work and energy that was showcased today to make this show a success. It was not possible without the support of the entire team. But this has given us a lesson that nothing is impossible in this word the only thing required is to show trust in each

other. We all have created history today and have done something that no one in the past have ever thought of. I congratulate the entire team for the success of the show.” Kiran Kheva, Director, Indian Federation for Fashion Development told us “We were informed by the authorities that venue booking is cancelled & we were in shock, we tried to reach the authorities but they were not ready to listen. The way out was to postpone the finale day or cancel the finale day.” Avinash Pathania, Director added “Being IFFD a young team, When Tarun Shienh Ji said “The Show Must Go on” and then came up with the idea of venue shift, we had a discussion with our associates, designers, talent team and production team. Everyone was on support of the idea” The third day venue was

It was brilliant how the whole team stood up strong together to support each other. It was even more overwhelming to see the support of guests and the media who stood by every minute supporting us to put together a brilliant show. kassh K Aggarwal has a unique approach for how they like to design and go about their craft, have been influence by Indian-art, heritage & culture and loves to combine it with the Colonial British inspired work, the fusion of such extremes makes the jewels unique... He has been awarded the Jewelry Design & Development Award 2013 by the 33rd WORLD ENVIRONMENT CONGRESS and he has also been felicitated with Rajiv Gandhi Global Excellence Award. A thorough study in gems and Jeweler from Indian Institute of Gems and Jeweler, Gemological Institute of America and Foreign Trade Expert makes him that he is today. Having been established in the industry in just a short span of four years with his label, Shubhashini Ornamentals, believing in a product has to be well-planned, Detail can never go unaccounted for, the bespoke jewelry comes from making a piece of design comes to reality by keep it customer oriented with its price and durability and letting the creativity play its role, to make both hand in hand with complete perfection to the piece and the reflection of the patrons in its personal buying and that makes the brand unique and as the brand tag line says…”there is something for everyone”...

“..a product has to be wellplanned, Detail can never go unaccounted for, the bespoke jewelry comes from making a piece of design comes to reality by keep it customer oriented with its price and durability and letting the creativity play its role.”

This summer’s season, the latest collection– “Gold Aesthetics” inspired from the color of the sun- “The-Gold” was showcased. Gold as a metal is enriched in the Indian history since ages and the charm of the metal is increasing only, but the old style of gold jewelry making is losing its demand so in the coming collection Akassh is revisiting the old world charm of traditional gold metal techniques, with the fusion of today’s latest innovative manufacturing skills. The impact of the Indian heritage combined with understanding of the colonial British work has played a very crucial role in the creative nuances; it’s this fusion of such extreme cultures that sets the jewels to be unique. "It’s the shine of the metal; the brightness of gold never fades the time changes but the gold stays forever.“ For more info, visit www.shubhashiniornamentals.co.in

DESIGNER HUB

Q: Brand Rajdeep Ranawat was launched in 2004. How has been the journey so far? A: The journey so far since the launch of my label, "Rajdeep Ranawat" in 2004 has been rather fruitful apart from bumpy as well, which I suppose we term as the usually basic 'teething problems' that arise in setting up of any new business. The starting was really on a small scale with about 4 workers from my out-house, with about 2 stores in total from where we started supplying to Mumbai and Ahmedabad respectively on consignment. I didn't even have a mannequin to start my business with so had to decide on making styles that didn't need a body form or any sort of draping, but was commercial enough for the young or the mature woman. I came up with a collection of some light printed and embroidered ponchos with 5 samples for each of the stores, did

basic costing on them and minimum markups...all sold out, got the payments end of the month and invested the money to buy more material and slowly hire more labor to increase the business... This went on for a good two years when I finally got myself a larger area to accommodate a staff of about 30 and today with over 50 working for us, production is out of control, demand is more than our supply to almost 40 stores in India and abroad, we are once again looking at relocating to a larger space and expand our brand further by the end of this year... Q: Your clothes have a unique fusion of different cultures... is it because of your professional lineage? A: Since a child, I've always been attracted to color, always played with crayons, water paints and thereafter went on to making oil paintings on canvases when I was in class 6th without any formal training in art. I always felt that practice made me better so dabbled in all sorts of mediums in art, which not only let me to win art competitions all the way from 1st standard to my 12th, but my father who was a keen lover of nature taught me the beauty of the same that it has to offer to mankind. I mainly painted landscapes, wildlife and florals and always tried to make them as realistic as possible. I never really understood modern art or any other such form and felt, art should be

simple, pretty and pleasing to the eye than something you would have to stare at for hours to derive its meaning... Sort of like a 'migraine' in layman’s terms. I was studying in a boarding school, 'The Lawrence School Sanawar' when the entrance exams for NID took place and missed it. So my father got me the forms for NIFT during my vacations and I came in the merit of top 24 in India. I took the fashion design course and graduated as one of the students from the batch of the millennium in 2000. I joined a French fashion house as a designer for 2 years and shuttled for shows and exhibitions to Paris, Vienna and Milan that only nurtured my experience in European sensibilities. Later I went on to heading a New York based fashion house for another two years which led me to open my own label at the end of 2004. The fusion of different cultures is a depiction of my experience in art, nature, understanding of color and travel to various countries during my days of working with the above organizations.

Q: We see that almost all your collections are inspired by nature. How do you make each one of them different from the other? Isn’t that a challenge? A: "Nature" has always been my source of inspiration and mentor and today, what is am is because of that only. Yes we have our own artistic and creative aptitude, but with nature by my side, I've only excelled. is don't know if my collections were very commercial because of this aspect or probably how is used motifs as an inspiration for my embroideries, prints and textures, whatever it was, it worked pretty well and always will… I've been told by many stores lately, is need to change my embroideries and stop using too many florals, a client wants more variety than just flowers, so in turn, if is start doing 'gota patti' work, something I've never done, how do is make it a 'Rajdeep Ranawat' look? probably mixing florals, in a more abstract manner, or just using aspects of nature in terms of textures or leaves, or birds, animals etc.… there is absolutely no end to it… each season, is travel to some exotic place or the other to clear my head and come up with something new. Last winter we vacationed in Santorini, and came up with the lovely SS13 collection based on its beautiful bougainvillea flowers, landscapes and grills. the next season from our European soiree, we visited many well-known museums to only come up with the latest AW13 collection 'Quixotic Regalia' based on medieval and Byzantine inspired motifs with elements of nature entwined within them. sometimes we come up with themes such as 'Pocahontas' and 'Thumbelina', famous story characters, who only inspire us more to come up with elements, inspiration from their lives, habitats and cultures. is feel, it’s always truly very exciting to keep working on new themes, yet sticking to our design roots of 'art to wear' and 'nature' being the main inspiration only proclaiming us with our individual look and aesthetic feel to make our brand start apart from the others. Q: What is the right way to wear bright colors? A: bright colors can be coordinated with lighter or mid tone colors in terms of coordinates. Wearing a dark coordinate creates a deeper contrast and could sometimes be a bit jarring or vivid to the eye. Classic combinations of white/black work best from the opposites from the color wheel but an orange with a purple is a no-no! Shift away from that an a lime/purple may look a tad

more sober instead! Aqua/yellow, pink/beige, ivory/blue, red/indigo are safer bets for coordinating the brights!!! Q: How fashionably unusual would you expect the summer 2014 to be? A: Fashionably unusual it may just be this summer of 2014… I see a lot of metal and punk inspired accessories with the fashion clothing this coming season. With the roaring sun about to burn the country, a lot of loose resort inspired clothing, light cottons and jerseys, kimono style tops teamed with jeggings or hot pants with studded booties, stilettos, metallic bags, hats, etc. are gonna rule. Sun shades will get bigger and bigger with maybe bejeweled or studded rims as well…

Q: What is the hottest new trend you think will hit the floors, this summer? A: Studs studs and more studs… from clothes with studded shoulder pads, collars, wrist bands and bags down to belts and shoes… I see a hint or more happening to something or almost everything in the attire!!! Q: At the last WIFW S/S 2014 we saw designers experimenting with different fabrics. Which one according to you should lead the choice, this summer? A: The leading fabric for this season is definitely chiffon or cotton voile! Q: Is there anything that you would suggest to carry forward for the summer of 2014? A: One should be comfortable in their own skin, wear what you feel relaxed in, a fitted garment doesn't mean that its fashionable all the time, its mainly a frame of mind! Q: Do you see any trend/color/accessory reviving from the past and making huge noise, this summer? A: Tribal is hot! And seems to come back and forth all the time… vibrant colors of yarns and beads entwined together to create a juicy statement of an accessory is always appealing and pretty much trend setting to the eye!

So for me, its tribal accents on accessorization. Q: What are the colors for summer 2014? Would you suggest color-blocking or is there a new found way to do that? A: There is absolutely no end to the color palette when it comes to a certain trend, at least that’s what I follow! Id rather create a trend and offer my client an array of color options in any certain style as per their skin tones, structure and preferences. But I do see reds, ivories, canary yellow and aquas making a wave, and definitely color blocking is huge. We have started using this style of color blocks ever since our AW12 collections… we love doing it, our clients love it Q: In terms of summer accessories, what would you personally recommend & why? A: I would recommend light accessories that don't really irritate the skin during high summers. A light voile print or a chiffon stole wrap could keep you cool. We did a Grecian resort collection for SS13 and created accessories with pearls and sea corals and shells. Apart from this, we created a range of digitally printed color blocked strappy shoes and an array of totes, clothes and sling bags on silk satin and canvas with digital prints and leather accents!!! Q: What kind of footwear would be recommended for summer 2014? A: strappy shoes, slippers, peep toes or wedge heels! They could all be color blocked, or printed or lightly embellished with pearls and rhinestones with accents of crochets and lace for a vintage and yet an expensive feel! Q: How to keep it simple, smart and sexy...this summer. Tell us the secret? A: Comfort!!!! Loose tops/shift dresses, fitted or semi fit bottoms (short or long), accessorize, hydrate and stay cool!!! Q: You also have a menswear range? What are the five accessories that are currently every man's fav and why? A: 5 accessories that are a favorite for every man is his cell phone to start with, then a great watch, a good belt, the shoes he wears and I could put the wallet or the sunglasses he carries as the fifth item. APR-JUN 2014 |

17

DESIGNER HUB Cell phone is important to every guy, it is what his status is in society, the watch, belt and shoes are again what his form of jewelry might be, and the accessories like sunglasses and wallet too are an extension of his personality! Q: What are the demands of a new age man in terms of colors, cuts and styles? A: the new age man is certainly not shy any more (and thank the lord for that), he is experimental, wears colored pants apart from shirt/tees in pinks, aquas and limes… cuts are getting classier and more towards accentuating his physique. Slimmer styles or styles that make him appear slimmer are the key. Men are spending on grooming themselves as well, going to the spas etc. are a common affair today.

Q: You are also a photographer tell us a bit about that? When did you start? A: Well, I think it all has to do with the sensibilities of an artist as a child that I had… photography was another way of keeping my artistic instincts alive in a faster way than sitting down to paint oils on a canvas. I left painting ever since I joined NIFT in '97 as there was absolutely no time, and got into photography only around 2004 when I started my label. Today, I travel the world with my SLR and capture nature in the form of birds, animals, flora etc… use them in my collections as original patterns of prints or embroideries etc… Q: Describe your vision for your brand. Does it symbolize any aspect of you/ your life? A: My brand has been envisioned by art and nature in a nutshell. I've held a brush to paint since I was in nursery and it never stopped me ever since till I got into a fashion college to enhance my talent into wearable art or "Art to Wear". I travelled to places that inspired me enough to create collections with new themes each passing season to give my clients

18

| APR-JUN 2014

láfiesta something new to look forward to every few months. Q: Who do you consider as your competition? A: I never really got down to thinking about that… many of the designers though keep a close eye as to what we are unto and what we really do each season. I believe a creative designer never has any sort of competition but is competition for others... Q: Who’s your clientele? A: Everyone… mainly women, young or mature… in India, abroad, NRI's and Foreigners, they all enjoy wearing our clothes. Celebs such as Chitrangda Singh, Soha Ali Khan etc. have all been great muses for us and the list only seems to be growing consistently each season… Q: What is your personal style statement? A: Be comfortable with what you wear and moreover with yourself! I'm mostly in denims and casual shirts/tees with a formal belt and shoes to match. A classic watch and a phone to help me sketch out thoughts that ponder every now and then.

t doesn't matter who you are, what you do or what walk of life you hail from, everybody needs help in the style department from time to time. Take our celebrities for example. Not even one of them became the King or Duchess of Cambridge overnight? I think it takes a teams of puckers, waxers, personal stylists, hair dressers and other specialists and maybe even a few industrial sewing machines to get a royal celebrity image like theirs up from scratch!

You can hardly blame them though, for enlisting such a grand army to spruce them up on their big day! I would too if two billion people were watching me on my debut evening, or an awards night. With the entire fan fair around the vicinity it’s easy to feel like looking as good as they do. So is this only for the seriously wealthy and elite? However they too, like us, confounds others by transcending their royal title and actually remaining a little true to themselves. I say this because even though celebrities have all these resources at their disposal, they still largely decide what to wear by themselves with their trusty personal stylist of course. This brings me to an important point, style is an innate thing. Some men and women are effortlessly born with the ability to look sheik even while grocery shopping; the rest of us need a little help in finding our path to grocery sheik or putting any outfit together for that matter.

The important point to understand is that you can have your own stylist experience that works for you. By taking the initiative to tailor make your own shopping experience with a personal stylist you get your own little parcel of sheik. By learning what suits you, you begin to have a greater understanding of how your body shape needs to be clothed. You can then take this one step further and find clothes that suit your lifestyle that are both stylish and suitable.

After a month of tiresome post marriage activities we planned out a week trip to Goa. I and Esha, my wife both are fond of travelling. Actually she told me about Konkan railway route which I had no idea the journey would turn out to be so romantic and joyful. We had our reservation from CST station in Mandovi Express. In the morning, CST station was warming up for the daily routine exercise. We took our seats along with an aged couple from Goa on our opposite berth. The lovely lady greeted us with a smile and asked for help to set their luggage. Finally the train started and the uncle started conversing saying he is the owner of a family restaurant on the Madagaon beach. He shared many good things about Konkan railway route which we were unaware. The couple asked us to excuse as they wanted to have a nap. I blinked at Esha and pulled her out of the compartment. I put my hands around Esha’s waist and stood there for a while, the feeling was more than that Titanic pose because it had no scenery of lush green coconut and mango trees and the cool breeze coming over the crisscross Rivers which we were enjoying. I rest my chin on Esha’s shoulder and shared some good moments.

Before Sangameshwar station the train stopped in between to give way to another train. We got down and sat on the railway track. The clouds were playing hide and seek above us and the weather was damn romantic. We were feeling like paradise under our feet and we are walking in the shade of love. What else you want when you have a companion who walks along like a fragrance and whispers melodious tune in your ears. Again boarding the train, I whistled at coconut wala from the door and he rushed with 2 coconuts in hands, I took one of them and paid for 2 with a smile. He was so happy and waved at us good bye. Again we scrambled on our seats and the uncle and aunt were again there to greet us with smiling faces. Respecting them I took my seat near uncle and auntie started talking with Esha about beauty of Goa. The beauty of Sahaydri hills and lush green plunging valleys were singing the rhyme of romance throughout the journey. John uncle asked my permission if he can take our photos on station to which I agreed and he captures some lovely snaps. Instantly I took out my laptop and transferred the photos. Meanwhile auntie drew a beautiful painting of Esha looking out of the window on a paper. I was amazed with the creativity of the couple. After lunch again the couple went for rest. I and Esha again took the opportunity to spend some quality time on station, at the door and on the berth. Those were the most romantic moments after our marriage. Resting near a pole on station, I was singing “Mere sapno ki rani” and Esha was blushing red with my gesture and faces I was making. Esha replied with the song “Aa ke teri bahon me har sham lage sinduri” and the evening really was turning the same. We took our seat again and lost in the eyes of each other. The entire journey turned out equally romantic to the stay at Goa.

This summer replace stereotype of dressing with comfortable yet stylish clothes to beat the heat. Here are some cool tips: White-out - Mehul Suthar

Upgrade casualness with a twist At times it is indeed too hot to dress up, and the only option is a vest or a tee to rein the summer. But who says a vest or a tee has to be ordinary? Pair a light orange slogan tee with a check shorts… Pair a cool color tee with stripes or a lovely print with black jeans… pair a vest with pastel color shorts… Complete the look by wearing flip-flops.

Leave your socks

Summer wear and white are nearly synonymous with each other. A white shirt and blue jeans makes you sexy like nothing can — and the best thing is that it is unisex. White is totally a summer color and it also gives off a really cool feel. A pretty white sun dress in a light fabric, like cotton or linen, is perfect for these summer days when the relentless sun beats down on us.

It is inevitable for any guy to leave his socks behind, but going sockless is in vogue this season. Team up your stylish summer cool tee with a cargo shorts. Wear a matching boat-shoe or a colored canvas shoe and rock the style statement in the town. It will look cool and will be comfortable too...

Be perfect fit With the mercury rising each day, styling yourself sensibly might sound a little counter intuitive, but masculine fit and proper tailoring will work in your favor this summer. Yes, fit is the king. Wear a washed out skinny fit blue denim and pair it up with a white polo t-shirt to make a chic summer statement.

Floral & Prints Summer is the perfect time to be braver with the choice of attire. The past summer seasons have seen experimentation with bold colors and prints. Give it a refreshing twist this season. Block prints, dye prints and floral prints looks cool in hot season.

Often in rush, do you also feel what to do with your hair? Or, something similar, on a bad hair day? Get over this dilemma as Gunjan Gaur, Permanent Makeup Expert and Executive Director of Alps Beauty Clinic, reveals easy and fast hairstyles; just for you!

LOOSE SIDE BRAID: Divide your hair from sideways. Now bring all your hair on one side and weave them into a regular loose low braid. In case you have bangs, let them drop naturally over your face, except they are long and must be tucked aside. If it is so, try merging your tresses in with the braid; else stick them back with the help of few pins. Gunjan says, is one of the easy hairstyles for long and medium length hair for girls.

34

| APR-JUN 2014

PUFFED UP BUN: Puffs are certainly in as they add the much-needed glamour to your face. Also, during summers, you might not feel like leaving your hair down –add the stylish oomph by trying the puffed-up hair bun. The bun is easy to make – just catch hold of few clips and pins to hold your hair back – oops…ahead. Now, take a chunk of hair from the crown of your head and make it into a puff with the help of the pins. Now take all the remaining locks, roll it, hold back and tie it with a hair band – get the desired look.

SLEEK PONYTAIL: While this is already making it on the international fashion circuit, this will also be perfect as regular street style. Comb hair neatly and part in the middle or side. Bring hair to one side and tie in a tight low pony. Carried off on both casual and formal occasions; this low pony is already a rage amongst college girls and is an ideal one for summers! “Flaunted by the celebs it – this hairstyle adds an amount of class to your look – that too, without much effort!” explains Gaur.

FISH-TAIL PLAIT: Part your hair into two large sections, parting straight down the middle. Then, pull a thin segment of hair from the outside of the left section. Pull it over the top of the left section, and grasp it under the right section. In other words, the chunk of hair has gone over the left section and finishes under the right section. Now, repeat the same action on the right side. Get ready to flaunt that “super-in” fishtail braid! Gunjan is sure that, an ideal for outings in the evening – this plait is sure get you rocking!

MESSY HAIR CLUTCHER: Here comes the simplest of all. During summers, clutcher is one of the most widely used hair accessories. Clutch your hair wet or dry; the result would be ultra stylish - try a messy hairdo with wavy hair using a clutcher. For this, all you need to take all your hair and tie it loosely with the help of a clutcher. “All you need is a little amount of attitude to show this hairdo off and you are good to go” reveals Gaur. So…what keeps you waiting now? Get up and try any of these – and be the center of attraction you always wanted to be!

H E A LT H Y Y O U Most people do not have to actively try to gain weight, but some people need to put on extra pounds during the summer season. Being underweight is just as bad as being overweight; it can be unhealthy and look less attractive than the ideal body weight. Gaining weight in the summer can be a challenge. If you are the type that enjoys a lot of activity and time outdoors hot weather can put a damper on your appetite and physical activity burns calories. You need to gain weight in a way that will make your body healthy from the inside out. Focus on eating the right foods and getting the right kinds of exercise to help you gain weight this summer. Here's how...

Weight

gain t h i s su mmer DIET Step 1 Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus two or three additional snacks per day. Stick to healthy protein sources such as chicken, fish, eggs and legumes. Add healthy fats to your meals in the form of avocados, coconut oil, nuts and nut butters. Eat whole fat dairy products including milk, cheese and yogurt. A smoothie with full-fat milk, yogurt and fresh fruits is a delicious snack on a hot day. Step 2 Consume between 250 and 1,000 extra calories per day, depending on how easily your body puts on weight during the summertime. Eating 500 additional calories per day can help you gain approximately one pound per week, which is considered a healthy amount of weight to gain. Step 3 Stay indoors for a few minutes before, during and after your meals and snacks. Hot weather can make some people feel less hungry, so take advantage of climate controlled indoor spaces if you have them available to you. It is okay to eat salads and other foods that taste good in hot weather, but make sure that you add a handful of nuts and a full-fat dressing. Step 4 Drink plenty of water throughout the day, but avoid drinking more than necessary right before or during your meals. You are probably thirsty because of the hot summer sun, but water does not contain any calories and will fill you up so that you have less room for food. Drink water between meals and choose full-fat milk or healthy juices to drink with meals.

EXERCISES Step 1 Lift weights or engage in another type of strengthtraining routine three or more times per week. This helps ensure that you build muscle with the extra calories you are consuming, instead of

PARAMJEET SEHRAWAT ISSA certified Personal trainer, Dietitian & Fitness model, Winner - Mr. India Best Physique award

storing them as fat. Keep your body balanced by working both your upper and lower body. To gain in strength, you need to stimulate your muscles, so start at a weight that feels challenging and do three sets of eight to 16 repetitions of each exercise. Increase weight over time as the exercise becomes easier. Good exercises for the upper body include bench presses, lateral pull-downs, overhead presses, biceps curls, triceps pull-downs, dumbbell flyes and triceps extensions. For the lower body, you can do squats, dead-lifts, lunges, leg extensions, leg curls, calf raises, hip abductions and hip adductions. Step 2 Stay fit with regular cardiovascular activities that you enjoy, but try not too overdo it too much. You might not want to train for a marathon during the same summer that you are attempting to gain weight. You need to be physically fit to stay healthy, though, so get out there and have fun doing activities that you enjoy. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio, such as biking or jogging, every other day. Step 3 Add yoga to your routine for increased body awareness and mindfulness. Yoga has been shown to help people lose weight, but can also work if you are attempting to gain weight in a healthy way. Being aware of your body and the way that you feed it can help you understand better what you need to nourish it and gain weight at the same time. Try an outdoor yoga class this summer once per week if it that is a viable option where you live.

TIPS AND WARNINGS : By doing compound exercises and using free weights, you will build a maximal amount of muscle mass. Compound exercises work more than one muscle at a time, and free weights cause you to recruit a high amount of muscle fibers to maintain stability. The end result is that you gain mass quickly. Speak to a physician before beginning a plan to gain weight to make sure it is healthy for you to do so. Do not gain weight by being sedentary and eating unhealthy foods, as this can have negative effects on your body in the long run.
