10 SATURDAY ● Thomas Becket – the Archbishop murdered on the orders of the king in Canterbury Cathedral – is responsible for Trinity Sunday (July 11). It was he who started the practice of celebrating the

Eucharist in honour of the Trinity on the Sunday after Pentecost, and from Canterbury it spread across Europe and eventually became part of the calendar of all the western churches. It’s a great day – and one that preachers should not be afraid of! They are not simply an end in themselves. That’s why it is so helpful to be reminded in the calendar of people like Samuel and Henrietta Barnet. They lived out their faith in response to the squalid conditions they found in their parish in Whitechapel and worked throughout their lives to improve housing conditions for the poor and provide proper pensions. JULY 2017 1 SATURDAY Henry, John, and Henry Venn the younger, Priests, Evangelical Divines, 1797, 1813, and 1873. ● Ember Day ● Four times a year you’ll find the word Ember Day against dates in the Common Worship calendar, This has nothing to do with ashes or warm fires! It’s simply an abbreviation of a German word meaning “four times a year”. They mark the traditional “four times” a year, once each season, when Christians fast to thank God for his gifts and pray for particular concerns. They are days of penitence and prayer – themes that easily pass us by! There is a very early rule that ordinations should take place in ember weeks, and although we no longer keep that tradition, in the Church of England these are days when we traditionally pray for the ordained ministry. ● Please pray for all those taking part in the Bradwell Festival this weekend. ● Diocese of Ogoni (Niger Delta, Nigeria).

15 SATURDAY Swithun, Bishop of Winchester, c. 862; Bonaventure, Friar, Bishop, Teacher of the Faith, 1274 ● Swithun was a great Saxon Bishop of Wessex when that was the most powerful kingdom in Britain. He was known for his intellectual gifts and learning, but also for his compassion and his commitment to evangelism. At his own request he was buried in a simple grave outside the walls of Winchester Cathedral. But of course the cult of saints was such that people couldn’t resist moving his body to a special shrine in the Cathedral – accompanied apparently by a huge and dramatic downpour of rain! They chose to interpret that as a sign of blessing.... Senior leadership in the church is always challenging – so pray specially today for our bishops, for humility, the right use of gifts and a passion for the Gospel. ● Diocese of Ondo (Ondo, Nigeria).

22 SATURDAY MARY MAGDALENE ● Mary Magdalene is a truly great saint – the very first witness to the resurrection, and known in some traditions as 'the Apostle to the Apostles'. For reasons that are not at all clear – but which need challenging – the western church has often portrayed her as a prostitute. This is simply an example of terrible bigotry – the New Testament simply says she was someone whom Jesus had healed, and NEVER associates her with prostitution. So today is a day to set right our thinking and give thanks for the first person to carry the good news of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. ● Diocese of Osun (Ibadan, Nigeria).

Paintbox flowers

THIS year the gardeners of Coggeshall invite you to see their gardens through the artist’s eyes on Sunday June 4 (2pm-6pm).

Throughout the Coggeshall’s Paintbox Gardens afternoon you will find localartists exploring the shapes, colours and textures that make up our gardens through their paintings and drawings.

There will also be lots of activities for children, a plant stall for your bargains, vintage cars and model railways to admire, a look back in time at a printing press, ice creams and Coggshall’s legendary cream teas and cakes.

THE bi-annual Writtle Gardens Open Day is all set for another successful showcase event on Sunday 11th June. ● Up to 20 gardens around the village. open to 6pm. ● Display by Thaxted Morris Dancers on Writtle Green at 12noon. ● Children’s Scarecrow Competition prize-giving at 12.30pm. ● Official opening for garden visits by Lord Petre at 12.45 pm. ● A quarter peal of bells from the church tower. ● Plant sales, art exhibition with picture sales and other attractions. ● Refreshments available at various locations around the village Joint organiser Jean Pinkney said: "We are hoping to match the record from our last open day when more than a thousand visitors attended and helped raise over £7,000 to support the upkeep of our local church. This year several new gardens will be on show. Make sure you start early in order to see everything.

As well as the open gardens, other items of interest will include access to the Writtle Bowling Green, the village Allotments and a Floral Display inside the church by students from the Writtle College floristry department. There will also be an exhibition by the Writtle Art Group in the Village Hall. Afternoon refreshments will be available around the village, including a ploughman’s lunch in the Church area.
