ull skies failed to dampen Cheltenham’s Christmas spirits on Saturday afternoon, as this year ’s parade, led by the hot rhythms of local percussion band Samba Batida, wound its way through the crowded streets of the town centre. Accompanied by sparkling stilt walkers, trick cyclists, and pantomime characters, Santa’s Express train brought up the rear of the procession, chugging its way merrily through the cheering crowds. The parade started in the High Street and was the trigger for Cheltenham’s big Christmas lights switch on at the Beechwood Shopping Centre, Regent Arcade and finally at the Brewery, where the fun continued with performances from the cast of Cinderella – this year’s family friendly pantomime at the Everyman – and rousing tunes from local popsters the Chip Shop Boys. Christmas entertainment in Cheltenham looks like being one of the best ever, with a superb selection of events during the festive period leading up to Christmas. Christmas Markets abound with Christmas fayre. On the Promenade until Sunday 5 December you can choose from a wide range of festive crafts and gifts, then top up with a hot Bratwurst sausage and a glass of delicious, warming Gluhwein. Also on the Promenade until Saturday 4 December, don’t forget the Christmas Charity market, with cards, gifts and much more, all supporting local charities. Friday 17 December marks the last Farmers Market before Christmas, before the Arts & Crafts Market takes over the Promenade on 18 and 19 December with an opportunity to buy something local and original for the festive season. Yes, with late night shopping on Thursdays in December and during Christmas week, Cheltenham is the place to be for food, entertainment and festive fun, whatever the weather!
